Sony Android Nougat roadmap revealed; Xperia XZ gets update next month

by XB on 23rd September 2016

in Android, Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia X series, Xperia XA series, Xperia XZ series, Xperia Z3 series, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series, Xperia Z5 series

android-nougat-sony-xperiaSony Slovakia held a press conference earlier today and also let slip when its Xperia devices would receive the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. According to a Sony slide, the Sony Xperia XZ and X Performance will be the first devices to receive the Android N update in October 2016. The Xperia X and X Compact are expected to follow in November 2016.

We should then see the 2015 Xperia Z series be updated around December 2016. This will include updates for the Xperia Z5 family, the Xperia Z3+ as well as the Xperia Z4 Tablet. Finally, the Xperia XA and XA Ultra will be updated in ‘early 2017’, which could mean any time up until March 2017.

All of the handsets mentioned in the roadmap are the same as officially mentioned by Sony as the devices to be updated. There were no new devices mentioned, which means it looks increasingly likely that other 2015 Xperia devices such as the Xperia M4 Aqua/M5 and C4/C5 Ultra may not see the update to Android Nougat.

Are you surprised by the timing of Nougat for your device? Is it earlier/later than you expected? Let’s hear your thoughts below.

Thanks Mrninko!

  • Little Man

Google/Sony better sort the shit out for Z3 users. Pretty sure all of us want Nougat too.

  • Jeremmy Palacios

    O.o!!! True????

  • Rat

I love my Z3 Compact but I feel like it’s time for me to upgrade. I’m either getting the X Compact or wait and see what the new google phones are going to be like!

  • Milt MacFarlane

I have an Aqua and waiting on Marshmallow as promised maybe it’s like the Z3 and not capable if Nougat

  • Milt MacFarlane

There was a blog earlier about this it might not be possible scroll down to “it’s not Sony’s fault”

  • Little Man

Honey, there’s a reason I included Google in my comment. I’ve read that article.

  • Little Man

I find it amusing that a rat is talking to a little man. Just a bit of silly humor to you.

  • Abdulrhman Mohnna

O.k What’s about Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact?!!! It’s the only mini Tablet from Sony..

  • Prince Mensah

    Good one…really good one

  • Prince Mensah

I believe all devices with Adreno 3xx don’t qualify for Nougat.

  • Prince Mensah

    I think it will be better to add an extra month to the given ones like so ;
    Newest Xperias- November
    Xperia Xs – December
    The Z-series – January…..
    in that order

  • Bezels for the win !

that’s early I expected it be in march 2017 .

  • Bezels for the win !

M4 Aqua ? it’s already got Marshmallow but I think that you can forget about official Nougat for that phone …

  • ryq24

If the nougat help improve the XA performance then maybe i will buy one.

  • owl

I hear you man, typing this comment with my Z3TC now. Been waiting and hoping for a successor since I bought mine.

  • Eduardo Otero

I would add a couple months.

  • Squirtle 1

WOW ! My XZ is allready Pre-orderd but i thought i would be like february but not next month

  • Alvin

I would rather add two months to wait for its release in every countries around the world.
(or 6 months if Sony is becoming like Samsung)

  • If these dates are accurate, I applaud Sony for the relative speed in upgrading devices to Nougat. They always seem to get screwed with releasing phones this time of year right around the time Google releases the latest version of Android. Then media outlets go “how could Sony not include the latest Android with their phone?” If only it was as easy as running a quick upgrade tool. :)

For now, my Z5 Compact is doing OK on Marshmallow, but a security update would be appreciated!

  • Geese Howard

The age of the Nougat is near…

  • Milt MacFarlane

Nope mines still on 5.0 what authority do you know this? Or are you guessing? Thanks

  • Milt MacFarlane

Yeah I’m not Honey, don’t you think Google is not Android the article states it’s your processor thanks for the thanks prick

  • Bezels for the win !

use PC companion to update your phone …. if no-one didn’t been messing with the software on that phone(doing root , unlocking , etc) , that sometimes prevents it from auto update .

I’m no guessing , based on official info .

  • Mustafa Sezer

    It’s eaelier what I expected :)

  • razorg

If Sony can realize this timetable and also provide a really optimized release with the latest Security Patches at that time, I’ll take back all the things I’d been saying against Sony. (Z5C user here, and I’m sure most of you would agree that Z5 series got the worst software treatment in the recent Xperia Lineup)

  • Emil Oskarsson

Wohoo this mean my x performance will get the taste of nougat before December? This is great news :D

  • Emil Oskarsson

Recently got a security update to June 2016 on my x performance but would like to see august or septembers security update to fully patch quadrooter vulnerability :pp

  • Emil Oskarsson

Blame Google for not supporting devices with adreno 3xx. According to Sony they wanted to give the z3 (and maybe even the z2 line up) one last update. That’s why they included the Xperia z3 in the Android n program. But when the last update for the n program came out Google wanted to see devices with support of open gl es 3.1 or vulkan to only be able to run Android nougat. A wierd move from Google who usually complain about bad update from manufacturers…

  • LazAndKor

Z5 user here. I totally agree with you about the treatment the Z5 family got compared to the rest. Time-line wise I hope Sony is accurate, software wise they better give the Z5 series a nicer treatment.( X Ui, predictive autofocus…) but I think the Z5 series didn’t got that is because the X series weren’t released when marshmallow hit the Z5 and Z2/3 series. If the X had been around them probably we would have gotten the same treatment as the M5 (which got the best one so far on marshmallow)

  • Shehab Skull

    Sony is on fire <3

  • mrhangover Rox

Xperia M5 equally same spec and price as XA Ultra, and it’s seem just got 1 year, Sony Skip the update for it.

  • Shehab Skull

Sony users be like : hahahah No official dates for Samsung’s Nougat update

  • what about my Z1? :p

  • christere

Nothing is more tedious than people whining that their device didn’t get an update. Please stay on topic instead.

  • jag

This is great news! I hope we won’t get any false hopes with this! Kudos to Sony if they can deliver!

  • razorg

But he is right you know…

  • Don_Alduck

Earlier than i expected. I hope the N will fix all the battery issues i currently have on my Z5 running 6.0.1. The battery performance really is terrible right now. If all this turns out to be true with barely any delays, i’ll really appreciate Sony’s work. Until December though…I’d be happy to see a security update as I’m still on 1st April 2016.

  • or even wait for Android O to be released and then sony should give us android nougat update, i am sure then everything should work fine.

  • Vitali

Z3 series get no Nougat update.

  • Vitali

All Z3 series and below get no update.

  • Vitali

I am with you with the Z3..

  • Wilhelm-Bernhard Trometer

That sounds good that the xperia xz gets nougat some days in oktober becourse my xz ill get in the end of september or first week in october but ill wait for a officiall statment from sony by it self its hard too beliefe that they send it out so early

  • Deads

Stop repeating the bullshit that its Googles fault. Its Quallcomms fault.
They wont release new drivers that are needed to fully support the new features that are in N. Therefor N wont support those older soc’s.

  • SM

    C4 too

  • Actman

What do you expect for a midrange phone? I’ve been a Xperia user for 5 consecutive years… and mark my words – Nougat would be a last update for XA Ultra and XA. I know SONY’s trend well!

  • Lajos Márk Kovács

  • Milt MacFarlane

    Don’t you think I’d need notification 1st

  • MikeU

I own the Z5 Premium. It appears Sony is attempting to adhere to its new strategy (beginning with the X Series) of being more proactive with its customers; for example, making available the new XZ and X Compact to the market earlier than previous models and now updating the phone software sooner than usual. I hope Sony Mobile Communications sustain the improvements.

  • David Hvatov

    Which means next year.

  • David Hvatov

Well there’s nothing special in nougat update. We don’t lose anything with that. Hope they still will keep updated security patches. Z2 & Z3 are the best.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Guess why they won’t release new drivers? Because the socs are not supported by Google! There are proofs all over the Internet people did think it was Qualcomms fault at first but it’s Googles…

  • Aelavin

And I’m still waiting for Marshmallow for my Tablet Z3 Compact LTE… (central europe generic)

  • Bezels for the win !

”if no-one didn’t been messing with the software on that phone(doing root , unlocking , etc) , that sometimes prevents it from auto update .” > means no notification for update…it happened to me before .

although it could be that it’s just very late in your region . anyway it’s easiest to check via PC companion and update if possible .

  • Milt MacFarlane

Nah untouched being from the bottom of the World in Australia probably bottom of the list

  • Eduardo Otero

Really? This is Sony not explosive Samsung

  • Emil Oskarsson

Nä rätt lugnt alltså, kör den stabila marshmallow tills Android n kommer ut, trots allt inte alltför lång tid kvar :)

  • christere

Start a thread about M5 and whine about it there then.

  • Deads

Its not Googles fault, its Quallcomms fault.
The soc in the Z3 is good enough but it requires new drivers to fully support N.
Quallcomm considers the soc to be EOL and wont release new drivers.

  • Deads

You have it the wrong way around. The soc’s arent supported by Google cause they dont meet the requirements set by Google for N.
If Quallcomm would release new drivers the soc’s would be fully compliant. Cause on the hardware level they can handle it, its the drivers that are missing.

  • Emil Oskarsson

You cannot add support for Open GL ES 3.1 on a device that only supports Open GL ES 3.0…. That would be like expecting USB 2.0 port allowing you to transfer files to a usb 3.0 memory as fast as to a USB 3.0 port… It just isnt possible because well the hardware was not built for it…. Jesus give me a break….

  • Deads

Then go and explain why phones with the Adreno 306 which doesnt support OpenGL ES 3.1 will get Nougat?

    O you cant.

Quallcomm dropped support on various soc models. They are either waiting for Google or the OEMs to pay them for continued support (like Microsoft does with older Windows versions) or they simply are dropping it cause they want to sell the more expensive soc’s.

Cause the OEMs and customers are figuring out that you dont need the fastest soc to have a smooth Android experience. Ive got an old phone with a Snapdragon s4 Pro, that runs 5.0 smooth with no delay. A phone with a 650 that runs Android 6.0 smooth with no delay.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Adreno 306 only supports Open GL ES 3.0 like the rest of the adreno 3xx …. How hard is it for you to understand that im right and you are wrong? Even Sony blamed all this on Google! I give up on you, keep on having wrong i wont continue to correct you…

  • Deads

So besides being dumb you are also lazy? Cause its rather obvious that you didnt even bother checking out what phone i was talking about.

Besides that i already said that the 306 doesnt support OpenGl ES 3.1, so you post is pretty much just confirming what i said and doesnt add anything beyond that, yet again proving your stupidity.

The General Mobile 4G is a Android One phone that uses the Adreno 306 and it will recieve Nougat.
But seeing how deep the hole is that you have been digging for yourselves i doubt you will admit that you are wrong.

  • Bezels for the win !

Bro it’s Google’s fault , get over it . Qualcomm stated that they will provide driver if that is necessary for OEM’s to update their devices to Nougat , and guess what Google still says NO .

  • Emil Oskarsson

It is Android one you are talking about, either Google choosed to update it and make a exception or Android one does not require open gl es 3.1 or vulkan… I checked out the adreno 306 gpu and it only supports up to open gl es 3.0 so it just confirms what I said…

  • Khillo81

Who knows? They’ve been changing their strategy lately; it could happen that they release Android N early. Anyway, Google also made the latest version of Android available earlier than in previous years so all OEMs had more time to adapt it. Let’s see.

  • Spontex

    Oui, on verra

  • deekbee

Battery on my Z5C isn’t that great either, although some of that is down to Pokemon Go … But even prior to that it wasn’t brilliant.

  • Eric

Would you kindly refrain from using our images or give us credit?

  • Deckard_Cain

    Thank Google and Samsung. :(
But there’s people developnig Nougat ROMs in XDA. I am following that development.

  • Deckard_Cain

Qualcomm and Google screwed us over.

  • Deads

That same Quallcomm also said it considers those soc’s to be EOL and will no longer bring out updates for them.
So they are basicly waiting for someone to hand them a bag of cash.

  • Deads

Except it doesnt and it confirms that you are completely wrong. Cause you kept repeating that 3.1 is required and it obviously isnt.

  • JXperia

docomo xperia android 7.0 update roadmap:

    Nov/Dec xperia xp so-04h, z5/z5c/z5p so-01h,so-02h,so-03h

  • Prince Mensah

    You’re right.

  • mrhangover Rox

of course im whining, because you didn’t use the xperia M5, full of bug marshmallow, always corrupt sd card, change new sd card also the same. if im rich enough, i’ll just buy the new one.

  • mrhangover Rox

yeah. been use sony same as you too. but right now the firmware for xperia M5 just cancer the user. can’t even use the sd card properly. they also not release the fix as well.

  • Emil Oskarsson

It is for ordinary Android, read the god damn articles about it on the Internet and stop making a fool of yourself… Android one doesn’t require the same hardware specifications to be met as the ordinary Android software does. It’s like comparing night and day and say it’s the same thing…

  • Actman

Agree. This is the main reason why did I feel frustrated towards SONY nowadays. They were lack of supporting our devices! Look at SAMSUNG flagships… they almost got their security updates each and every month! (apparently I don’t really like SAMSUNG’s phones) I personally own a Z5 and Z5 compact and guess what? The latest and last security patches I got was on APRIL! Imagine mate, it was 5 months ago… Is this what SONY call a FLAGSHIP and practically it wasn’t cheap either!

  • Lol and you can start a thread to whine about his whining. He’s right and on topic, as it’s about the update that Sony should be delivering for the M5. And before you ask, no! I don’t have an M5

  • Matt Tsai

This is not fair to z3 tablet compact, absolutely not fair

  • ようちゃん(松村洋一)

    xz compact SO-01J??

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

You were right. October is almost gone.

  • Jer

    Still waiting…

  • CAQO

Well, sony heards you, It’s November 6, and no Nugat on my XZ.

  • Woah, so my Z5 Compact will have the update in December/January? It thought it would be somewhere mid 2017 looking at Sony’s update track record.
