Xperia X Concept receives Android 7.1.1 update (38.3.A.0.41)

by XB on 2nd January 2017

in Android, Firmware, Xperia X series

Sony Mobile has started 2017 with a bang by being the first manufacturer to release Android 7.1.1 on a non-Google smartphone. Sony Mobile’s Concept team has released Android 7.1.1 Nougat MR1 on the Xperia X in the form of build number 38.3.A.0.41.

New features include a restart option on the power button menu and a faster camera start-up time. Sony has also added PlayStation 4 PS4 Remote Play support to the Xperia X Concept (no DualShock support right now though), as well as updating to the latest 1 December Google Security patches.

The OTA release is only available for those running the Experimental track on Xperia X Concept. It is great to see Sony being committed to getting this out before others, let’s hope this same endeavour is seen on the stable firmware releases too.

Thanks Hein and najodleglejszy!

Wow! This means they’ve already got their hands on 7.1.1 Nougat, so it shouldn’t be long (like 6 months I mean) before it officially hits the flagship Sony phones :)

  • Meh

Niice, sony great job at keeping your promise

  • Don_Alduck

Yet, I’m still here waiting for my 7.0 update for my beloved Z5. I can’t really say a bad word though…Got updated to November Security update and my battery seems to be slightly better (still bad compared to what i had on 5.1 but significantly better than earlier) Let’s hope we receive a stable/safe version in the coming weeks. :)

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

I use Z5 E6658 but I didn’t get the last security update in November. My update dates back to 1st April.

  • razorg

There is no Z5 model as E6658 though :/ You sure it’s right?

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

    E6653 rather sorry

  • Edzus

Good news, but still as they wish to push the PS4 remote play forward, they should start to consider other regions and markets, for instance remote play isn’t available globally.

  • NP8

Sold the Z5 and got the X
Also saved me some money and got a better phone overall
Of course i don’t have 4K or water resistance but camera seems to be vastly improved
And has a better display too IMO

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

    Google Daydream?

  • razorg

Almost 75% of the regions on this model Z5 already got the latest .5.11 update. Most of the rest are the “branded” regions/firmware, meaning the devices bought on a contract from like Three UK, O2, Vodafone etc. If this is the case with you, your service provider gets the updates first instead of you, and add their own services/apps/features etc and then release it to you. This is the reason why some people gets the updates so late. You might want to ring your service provider if this is the case with you man and ask them. If not, meaning your device runs on a “generic” regional firmware and you still haven’t got the update, you’re right to get angry at Sony :)

  • AG12

Been using 7.1.1 since this morning, a great improvement on 7.0, seems so much faster, loving the App Shortcuts once more App developers start to use we will wonder why they didn’t do earlier.
Concept proves if you want quick updates then remove the bloat or wait ages for updates if you want all the extras.

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

Thanks but my phone is not branded too. Also I’m in Africa, Ghana.

  • razorg

https://xpericheck.com/device/E6653 You can check the latest firmware for your region here :)

Hopefully faster quick launch also included.

  • Daniel Johanzon

Because there will be asked when the hell are we with the Xperia Z5 FAMILY GET ANDROID 7.0 !!!! IN SWEDEN

  • what is your current build number version?

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

I just checked and truly the last update was 5months ago. What can I do? 1298-8239 R5C starhub SG

  • Actman

Fine! No update here (SG/MY) for me yet. No OTA, not even through Xperia Companion for Xperia X Compact. Sadly it still stuck on 6.0.1. It sucks for some reason. So SONY when are we expecting to receive the Nougat?

Meanwhile we are still waiting for the Z5 Series for Nougat. It looks like SONY started to relinquish the Z5 Series which was just a year old. Yeah although 32.2.A.5.11 was released like a month ago but bear that in mind that this firmware doesn’t really change anything. Icons, UI or even the Home Version itself. I don’t count that as an actual firmware support.

  • Samar Vaishampayan

    32.2.A.5.11

  • Daniel Johanzon

Have spoken with Sony Support about Android 7.0 and them just saying they do not know when it will come.
WHAT THE HELL KNOWS THEIR SUPPORT igentligen!
HOW TO START IN AND TURNING IT, and how to do safe mode …

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

I just checked and truly the last update was 5months ago. What can I do? 1298-8239 R5C starhub SG

  • Jake

How did you get an X after selling a Z5?
Can you do the same for my Z5? I want an XZ.

  • Jake

By then the Z5 will be dropped.
No wait, I think they will drop it an Android 8.

  • Jake

Who said 7 was december for Z5? we might jump from 6 straight to 7.1.1 but I see your point. They shouldn’t be working on 7.1.1 if all 7 hasn’t come out yet.

  • Jake

Get Xperifirm and flash your phone. I am in Uganda and I have the november update already. I am just hoping we get 7.1.1 instead of 7. Why wait?

  • Jake
  • razorg

That’s a branded Singaporean firmware man. Like Jake said, you might want to flash a generic region firmware like Russia or UK so you can get the latest firmware faster. But please be warned, although flashing another firmware doesn’t void the warranty, if done badly, it might brick your device. So do a proper research on it, watch videos about it, ask people who know how to do it properly before you flash another firmware.

  • razorg

We’ll see. I’m not quite satisfied with the software support on our neglected Z5 phones myself either. Never felt like I was using a flagship phone in terms of software. Maybe they can fix things up with Nougat…

  • razorg

This doesn’t happen to me. I live in Cyprus, and my Z5 Compact runs on Customised UK firmware…

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

Will it require the phone to be unlocked again? I’m quite a novice.

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

Please will it require the phone to be unlocked before I can use my network? After debranding it

  • razorg

I’m not sure. My Z5 Compact, which I bought from Three UK, had Three’s own firmware on it, but wasn’t locked (meaning I could put another company’s SIM card in it and use without any problems). But Three UK’s updates were really slow so I flashed generic UK firmware on it. But this was almost 8 months ago, so I don’t quite remember what I did then :D As I said, use the forums or the discussion under the link Jake shared and try to learn all about it before you do it :)

  • Jake

The Z5 is the next phone to be dropped. We will be abandoned at 7.1.1 Then I will switch to LineageOS and continue life with a custom ROM. Have you seen the dude here who sold his Z5, got an X and STILL SAVED MONEY? I am going to ask him to help me get an XZ. lol

  • razorg

Although design of X is really pleasing to the eye, I’d always choose Z5’s design over X’s. I’ve got another year before my contract ends anyways so I’m not really bothered about the time “after Nougat”. I’ll assess Sony’s support quality during this remaining time and decide whether I’ll go for another Sony phone next year, or go to another brand…

  • Jake

    BLASPHEMY!!!
There is no other phone in the world. I wish I had a contract like yours. I buy xperia for the camera and because I have used Sony phones since the Xperia X1 which was a VERY VERY VERY bad phone.
There is no need to get any of the X series, they are all iterations on the Z5.Wait for June and December to see what Sony does.

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang

Alright thanks alot I have already started reading about it. I must definitely have it flashed before the next day.

  • only two things can be, it is a bug in Xperia Companion software, or we are really close to the Nougat update :)

  • Moisés

Hi… Question for those with any Xperia Z family…
Do you still have small apps and screen recorder on 6.0.1?

    Thanks

  • Moisés

Updates also depend on where you live, if your phone is unlocked or carrier..

  • Anibal Evora

    yes :)

  • GrinigGammalGubbe

    XZ and 7.0

  • Moisés

    Thank you

  • SopNaw
  • Makiz

WOW! Seems Sony will get rid of the huge top and bottom bezels after all :)

  • NP8

Try listing it online on a bidding site like eBay

  • NP8

XZ is new you won’t be able to get a it with the money you sell the Z5, here I see a lots of people with X upgrade to the XZ so if you are lucky just try to find one of them. Some of them just need to get rid of the X so you might get a great deal

  • Terence Wu

Same here with Xperia X Dual (HK). No branded carrier, mine is a generic version. I’m considering to flash India Generic to get Nougat.

  • Terence Wu

Sad that my Xperia X is a dual sim version, out of Concept for Android program.

  • Troy Boateng-Agyemang
  • Dilipkumar

    It’s a bug.
Bcoz I too got that man

  • Actman

Did you see what I wrote? SINGAPORE and MALAYSIA. And it’s definitely unlocked!

  • skrug

    They mean in AOSP

  • Benjamin Estimada

And here I’m, still waiting for 7.x for my little Xperia XA. :(

  • Dilipkumar

XA will recieve 7.0 probably on March

    Well done!!
    Welcome to phone flashing.
So when Sony abandons us (Android 8), you will easily flash LineageOS or MIUI? THat is the beauty of Android. Like Linux, it comes in many flavours (customised roms).

  • Bashar Shehab

    why r u shouting? lol

  • Bashar Shehab

Concept team and stock sony software team are completly different teams and have no kind of connection in work between them. Concept team delivered 7.0 in November, and now 7.1.1. Stock sony team still has to do 7.0 for Z5 before getting 7.1.1.

  • a n t o n i o T Z

Does anyone know when the Xperia Z5 is upgraded to Android 7.0?

  • razorg

Seeing that during this time, that no firmware number or anything has been leaked or published on Xperia Open Source Project website or etc, people have been speculating that Z5 series might receive 7.1.1 directly. Sony’s X Concept programme has already got 7.1.1 and while releasing that, they announced that with the experience they’ll get from X Concept programme, they hope to release a stable/optimised 7.1.1 build before anyone else on the market. I seriously hope Z5 series gets 7.1.1 instead of 7.0, in this month or the beginning of the next.
