New Xperia X Concept update adds Battery Saver feature and Camera app shortcuts (38.3.A.0.83)

in Firmware, Xperia X series

Sony Mobile has released a new firmware update for the Experimental track of the Xperia X Concept with build number 38.3.A.0.83. The big new feature in this build is the introduction of “Battery Saver”. Sony fans have been asking for the STAMINA mode found in original Xperia firmware, which was replaced by the introduction of Doze mode found natively in Android Marshmallow. Sony’s new Battery Saver feature tries to go some way to bring back some of the customisability of STAMINA mode.

Battery Saver gives you several options to extend your battery life when your phone gets below a certain percentage (you can choose any level below 50%). You can turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, auto-sync and adjust brightness/screen timeout. The option can be found in Settings > Battery > Battery Saver.

On the camera side, Sony has added new camera quick settings and camera app shortcuts, which now allows you to quickly take a video or selfie picture. VoLTE support has been widened for Spain (Vodafone) and UK (EE/Three), which will be welcome by many, given how large these carriers are in their respective countries.

New Battery Saver option helps to extend your battery life when power is running low

The big reason the original Stamina mode was so beloved is because it made a real difference in battery life with the default setting, without sacrificing features or performance.

All these new versions just gives you the option of gimping the device to eke out a couple more hours from a low charge, which just isn’t a replacement.

One of the many reasons I’m sticking to 4.4.4 on my Z3C.

  • Don_Alduck

There’s only 2 things i would love to see in the future, although one of these is unlikely to be back in its original format.
1, The Old Stamina mode, no performance/feature sacrifices
2, Support to shoot pictures in RAW format
And of course, everything else that’s included in the concept, beta.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    This is AWESOME.

I remember the old stamina mode back in KK (Xperia Z2), there was an option to “Restrict device performance”. Didn’t really feel a difference though. Might have just had the cores hotplug a little later. Anyways, hoping this’ll be available for the Z5 series. :D

  • Moisés

One reason my z4 still has 5.0.2

  • 3_nity

    Agreeee!

  • 3_nity

Just bringing back old stamina mode to all Xperia, Sony!

  • Emil Oskarsson

Too bad Google made doze inte first place and baked it into the Android software -.- sometimes I wish Sony was the manufacturer who developed Android instead of Google xD

  • Emil Oskarsson

They cannot, only if Google removed doze from the Android software which I doubt they ever will :/

  • Srijan Chawla

App shortcuts on Xperia Home Finally !!! Yaaayyyy

Is there no Sony fan who would request camera button remap functionality similar to Huawei easykey?

  • LPX

I had Xperia XA on Android 6.0 and there are Xperia STAMINA mode, which works like on old kitkat devices.

Till they block new apps or new app versions from store and say Android 5.0 and newer.

  • Tomislav Matić

Untill you get update to Android 7.0.

  • Bashar Shehab

    Except that’s not Xperia Home.

  • LPX

Doze is a Marshmallow feature, so if Sony gave stamina on Marshmallow why they can’t implement in on Nougat?

  • Exodite

Well.. it’s not that Doze was a bad idea for Android in general, it just ended up being a downgrade for Sony devices.

I’m definitely with you on preferring the Sony-added features over what Google brings to the table though, later versions of Android don’t impress.

  • LPX

Stamina is also at Android 6.0. Please have a look a my today’s posts where I put a screenshot.

  • Exodite

There are a couple of apps where that would be an issue, most notably my bank/security app.

That said I personally use very few apps and as I’m not bothered by running an older version of Android I don’t really care about using older versions of apps.

I imagine my phone may age past usability before the Android version need updating, fingers crossed!

  • Exodite

It is, it’s just not anywhere as good as the original version.

It doesn’t provide the same battery savings and is generally limited to shutting off phone features to get a few more hours when you’re already at a low battery total – like I alluded to in my original post.

  • Tomislav Matić

This STAMINA on Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1 is not like STAMINA on Android 5.1 and Android 5.1.1. It is good but you can not customize it. Only thing that you can do with STAMINA on Android 7.0 unlike on Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1 is to set STAMINA mode level. This is not nearly old STAMINA. This Battery Saver on Android 7.1.1 Concept is better because it has some customizable things and I am hoping that they will give this to STAMINA.
Battery life on Android 7.0 is worse wether you turn off or on STAMINA. And I am waiting on fix for battery.

  • Sunrise

Stamina is even better on 7.0

  • XperiaBlog

That screenie is on Nova Launcher – sorry to excite! Hopefully the Xperia Launcher can’t be too far behind though.

  • Moisés

The one of KK and L is better than on M

  • Srijan Chawla

Ohh !! how my hopes & dreams just turned into ashes :'(

  • Daniel Craig

Get Blackberry Launcher, it has a lot of shortcuts then you can use them with Xperia Home.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Yeah ofc it was a good addon for the rest of the Android community but for us with Sony devices it was a true let down xD

  • Emil Oskarsson

I have the x performance and belive me, any device with Android 6.0+ does have some kind of doze based battery saver even though Sony calls it stamina mode :p

Can anyone tell me how is the Google logo grey on the final screenshot of the home screen? I’d like to do the same on my Z5.

Release Android Nougat for Z5 Compact already!

  • Raymond De Guzman

Is this the same Battery Saver in LG phones?

  • Bernhard F.

That also exists on 6.0 on the Z3. And you actually feel a difference with it, its a bit annoying sometimes but helps the battery.

  • I got paid $104,000 previous year by freelancing from my house and I did it by working part time for 3+ hrs /daily. I followed a business opportunity I stumbled upon from company that i found online and I am so excited that I was able to earn so much money. It’s so beginner-friendly and I’m so blessed that i found this. Here is what i did… http://twitter.com/StinnettMargar1/status/835822769971437569
