Xperia XZ Premium goes up against Galaxy S8+ in speed and camera test

by XB on 28th May 2017

in Videos, Xperia X series

The Xperia XZ Premium is Sony’s latest and greatest, armed with the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and a 19MP camera capable of 960 frames per second slow motion video. If you are interested to see how it fares against the Samsung Galaxy S8+ in some speed and camera tests, then check out the videos below from YouTuber Phone Battles.

The speed tests include a comparison on camera speed, boot-up, fingerprint scanner and opening apps. There is also a camera comparison against the Galaxy S8+ in low light conditions, as well as comparing the image stabilisation and digital zoom. It is interesting to see how well the Xperia XZ Premium does in the speed tests against the Galaxy S8+, although the camera tests are a bit more evenly balanced. You can check out the videos yourself and let us your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Sony has Best optimized software in their flagship phones…Samsung is slower, and now iPhone 7 plus too!!!

  • DBS

Problem with these “tests” is that, for example, which chipset does the S8 have in the test? The snapdragon? Or the Exynos?

Then there’s the dexterity factor. Depending on your dominant hand, your finger WILL click first on the phone in your dominant hand.

And then there’s the ignorance. For example on the speed test while taking photos, the S8 is faster. Well no sh*t. It only has to process information from 12mp instead of 19mp. Even putting aside the fact that Sony’s camera software is complete sh*t, it would still be faster if there’s less information to process.

I say to disregard these “speed test” videos. They are never trustworthy

  • kabiluddin

We also need to disregard your dumb volatile comments. You are never trustworthy.

  • DBS

Like your mother disregarded your education I assume.

  • Kariko

but but Samsung has less bezel

  • Kariko

    both phones are SD835

  • Itsarapong Intoum

You’re so disgusting for mention someone else’s mother.

  • DBS

How do you know that? The S8 only comes with the SD835 in the US.

  • DBS

And you’re absolutely pathetic. Mother, father, uncle, teacher, social security supervisor… It’s irrelevant. It’s an expression meaning “the person who educated you”. Maybe go learn some English?

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Xperia Camera still lack the detail when zoomed in. Still lack of full manual.

    Another thing else seem fine.

  • Kariko
  • Itsarapong Intoum

You don’t need to tell me to learn more english, Also I don’t think anyone here need your advise or opinion.

  • DBS

    Thanks for the info ;)
    (I don’t read YouTube comments.)

  • DBS

And I don’t need your opinion nor to care for your “feelings”, child. But you *do* need to learn English if you’re going to vomit your opinions on someone elses comment instead of the article.

Otherwise, as the saying goes, mind your own business.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Yes I don’t need you to care about my feeling also, Thank but I don’t think I need you to tell me.

  • DBS

Yeah, I’ve noticed you don’t think.

  • SONY only

WTF ?!! You don’t want stereo speakers on the phone ?!!

I am okay with this bezel because there are stereo speakers

  • razorg

I certainly am not OK with XZ Premium’s large top/bottom bezels, as well as S8’s lack of front facing Stereo speakers. What Sony should do is to meet both of these two phones at the middle; decrease the size of the bezels, but not as much as S8. Slimmer bezels which can allow the implementation of good front facing stereo speakers, this is what Sony should do.

  • Kariko

Sarcasm boi, bezel give good grip for me while in landscape mode without mistouching the screen

  • twm

Screen resolution does not matter as long as Sony wins.

  • In the end, I get the S8+ instead,
Really liked the reflective mirror finish on the Premium, but that bezel and smudgy camera in low light…

Come on Sony, why do you flopped on your own camera while others fully utilized it to the fullest potential.

  • Yasir Fawad

As for your concern about the processor in S8, does it matter? It means if sd835 is good in comparison with exynos, then samsung is fooling their customers by not providing the next big thing to each of their customers. They are deceitful.
U can see with ur own eyes the difference in dexterity, most of the time s8+ is pressed before than xzp. Learn to accept the facts. And the fact is Xperia XZ Premium is the best phone of 2017!

  • DBS

“As for your concern about the processor in S8, does it matter?”

Actually it does, because the Exynos processors are better than the SD835. So if they were comparing different processors it’s not an unbiased comparison. By the way, Samsung makes it pretty clear which processor comes in the phones. And they’ve publicly stated that only the US gets the SD835 version. If anything, Americans should complain since they get the worse processor (with impact on the performance of the device because there is a noticeable performance difference between Galaxies running a Snapdragon and those running Samsung’s proprietary SoC).

“U can see with ur own eyes the difference in dexterity, most of the time s8+ is pressed before than xzp.”

Sorry but I see exactly the opposite. He favours his right hand and most of the times clicks first on the XZP.

“the fact is Xperia XZ Premium is the best phone of 2017!”

    Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • Emil Oskarsson

And more fragile, hard to hold comfortably in landscape mode while watching YouTube for example and it does have its speaker on the bottom on the phone. Yeah bezels are not usable at all…

  • Emil Oskarsson

Of course they should decrease the bezels as much as possible without sacrificing the stereo speakers. But this time around Sony focused on how to dispute the heat created by the camera module, the soc etc in the device to make it run as cold as possible :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

Just block the bastard…. It’s a Swedish dude that I can’t stand anymore xD He’s been a pain in the ass over at the Swedish site Swedroid :pp

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

    Sony lost as always

  • Itsarapong Intoum

So… he doesn’t have anything better to do ?

  • Kariko

    Samsung lost as always

  • Phone Battles

Thanks for posting Xperia Blog. Have visited this site daily the past few years.

  • Moisés

    8x zoom… Digital zoom.
Of course it cant look good.

  • Moisés

China and Canada get Qualcomm too.
Ebay sellers sell Exynos in USA.

  • Tomislav Matić

Go away. You can’t accept that Sony is better.

  • DBS

    Because it isn’t.
Sony may be a better company as a whole (nay, Sony IS a better company) but Xperia phones are way behind the competition.
The XZP only has the 4K screen going for it but even there it’s an LCD display which, even if it gets DayDream compatibility, will offer a far worse VR experience than an AMOLED display.

Sony’s shortcomings have been very clear FOR YEARS. Sony has been made aware of them phone after phone. They simply refuse to listen.
So no. I will not go away (as if I’d do anything just to please some random guy on the internet) and I will continue to be critical of Sony until they fix the bloody mess that are their phones and that are NOT worthy of the Sony branding slapped in them.

  • Alvin

    Calm down..

  • Alvin

Watch the videos before commenting such bull****

  • Mohamed adel ali

Sony phone is good but really boring like iphone
i might switch to other brand when i got a chance to buy a new phone
yes Samsung s8 and s8+ both have saturated color and over sharpening but both give pleased image to the eye and that’s what matter to the customer and give more features than Sony a lot of ppl not a fan of touchwiz but it’s still more function than sony UI and Samsung provide a proper full manual camera which Sony didn’t make it yet
last word Sony is a great company and i love it but what they made every year it’s just hardware upgrade software doesn’t change so i think that’s what make sony fail i beleive it’s not marking it’s their poor software feature BTW have right now Sony xperia z1
i think the only differnce between z1 and xzp premuim is only hardware
Sony plz work on your Ui to make it has a new feature and make your dual stero speak loud and make a proper camera ui and a proper image quality

  • adeceku

has less bezels and worse speakers

  • nfs2010

Nothing new. Remember how the overheating Z3+ kicked S6’s slow ass? And now with XZP , we’re doing an apple to apple comparison – hohoho

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmzVGuajBv0

  • Battal

What’s the results of that ?

  • David Martrano

    The bezel XZ! Huh!

  • Zakirox

what ever i just love sony awesome 100% natural images. but samsung is just creating n fake images on-shot :P last time my friend try to snap my room origin orange in color but the s8+ camera shows it as in a pinkish hahahaha lol faking customers by increasing it to high contrast.

  • bigshynepo

SONY XPERIA came away from this comparison like…
    https://youtu.be/GGXzlRoNtHU?t=5s

  • Robert Montoya

It’s the Verizon s8 so no exynos

  • Stephen

“BEZELS BEZELS BEZELS!!! BEZELS ARE COMING TO KILL US ALL!!!!!!” kind of drowns out Samsung’s shocking lack of quality control last year with a certain device, sadly….

  • Yasir Fawad

So you confirmed this that Sony are better at optimizing the sd835 than Samsung.
If exynos is better, still they are putting sd835, which is again deceitful, because they know the better one is exynos , still they put sd835 in majority of the s8’s.
Calling the tester biased is very illogical, just prove him wrong with your own video. Will you? Seeing is believing, and all of us here see that you are blind.
    A hahahahahahahahahahah

  • DBS

1 – Oh I have no doubt that Sony optimises the SD835 better than Samsung. Specially because Samsung has absolutely no interest in that. They optimise the Exynos because it’s their own chipset and they intend for other OEMs to start buying the Exynos from them instead of the snapdragon.
It’s not like Sony is great at optimising the Snapdragon chipsets…it’s not. They manage to make a mess out of them with constant overheating problems, specially in the camera use. But Samsung does a worse job in day-to-day optimisation of the SD835, yes.

2 – I didn’t make any of those claims. I said that THESE tests (being this video or ANY other similar video done by ANYONE) are NOT trustworthy because they have in them a bunch of very feeble tests with way too many variables.

3 – The worst blind is the one who can’t see. And fanboys like you are the blind ones. And proof of that is that Sony’s Mobile division has been sinking for years. They’ve reached now the low state they were in when they first started on their own.
You’re the one who can’t see it.
Sony hasn’t produced a decent phone since the Z3. Sorry. Those are the facts. As proven not only by the results of the phones themselves but also by the consumer interest which Sony hasn’t managed to keep.

My z3+ opens google play in a blink of an eye.
    My internet is simple speed.
    Phone is very fast.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Yep that’s one of the thing I don’t like. They should implement optical zoom !

  • Emil Oskarsson

    Sadly no…

  • Tomislav Matić

LCD screen of Sony is more colour accurate. If you love shrill colours go for Samsung.

  • mixedfish

Z3+ is a good phone, unfortunately the damage was done before it had a chance. And in the end of the day, you got to give it credit, 6.9mm with no camera hump, that is incredible. Now on Nougat it feels fast and snappy, not reason to upgrade.

  • singh

Samsung loses most of the time, I work in repair shop and it seems most Samsung fail about 15 months into there life cycle, it’s normally dead motherboard or black screen, normally the black screen can be fixed if it’s tablet because you can open the back case and reset the led cable and battery this resolves the problem. The problem with there phones is you have to use heat to take the back of plus this could also damage the screen, and s7 screen cost 260 pounds that without labour. Sony are definitely more reliable

  • fried_egg

No wonder Samsung is promoting the screen gimmick (and a very good desirable gimmick at that).. because the Sony at least matches it for performance. Both videos (nice hipster location… ghetto chic) have their faults… standing still the Sony looks clearer but when moving it decides to highlight the near and make the far hard to see… the samsung is better for seeing the far when moving but blurs out the bright leds etc). i cant wait for the XZ1 at IFA… my next phone.

  • DBS

Colour accuracy is tweaked in settings. ANY AMOLED screen allows you to mute the colours and make them duller (or “accurate”) like an LCD screen. An LCD screen, on the other hand, can’t produce real blacks because, you know, science. Black is the absence of light…and you can’t achieve absence of light with a panel that is backlit.

  • DBS

“You should know from the reviews that Sony Xperia XZ premium is of the best phones around at the moment.”

One of the best phones compared with mid-rangers, sure. Compared with other flagships? Well, it sure is better than the HTC U11 or the OnePlus 3T. But the main contenders – the G6, S8 and even Google’s iPixels – are still overall far better phones. The only thing the XZP has to taunt is the pointless 4K screen. Nothing else in it is anything special.

” if they were trusted enough about exynos they would have never put sd835″

Don’t be stupid. Samsung produces the SD835. They are interested in continuing getting paid by Qualcomm to produce the chipsets. But they’re not interested in letting their processors go nowhere. Which is why they’re only putting the SD SoC’s in a very limited number of markets.
It’s called business. You’re probably too young to understand that.

I couldn’t understand anything else you wrote.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    1. PhoneBuff has proven that this year’s flagship SnapDragon processor is just as fast and as good as this year’s flagship Exynos processor from Samsung. Regardless if it’s SnapDragon or Exynos, it shouldn’t have performance issues at all when doing basic stuff (navigating UI, scrolling down some stuff, etc.) which most S8 duo reviews often show.

    2. Lol his finger will click faster on the other one? Not worth it dude.
That’s like saying I’m clicking Phone A earlier than Phone B if Phone B responds slower to my touch which is very even to both. That is just another way of ignorance to the end results, and it seems like you’re being one-sided here, but no offense though.

    3. Both are extremely fast, and if one is being faster, it’s too nitpicking.
Tbf, the XZ Premium was locking its focus before capturing, and that could be positive (as your photos will always turn out in focus) or negative (as you can miss something in that extra few millisecond of locking focus).
If we talk about image quality, that’s another story – no point of bringing that argument here if we’re simply talking about speed and performance alone.

    4. If they’re never trustworthy, then why not just ignore them?
You even wasted some few good times only to say that you don’t trust them?
If you really want to tell the creator of this test, tell him directly to the main video, not here. He does visit this article, but he will definitely prioritize YouTube because it’s his own job.

Hope to make myself a point here.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    Optimization of the camera.
But even if the S8+ does better, its low light photos are still utter useless.
In low light, I’d rather use the flash, because it won’t be there near the camera if it’s not made to be used for that purpose.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    Optical Zoom?
Say hello to thick camera bump!

If full Manual is what you need, Play Store is a very wide open store to find one.
Or you can download APKs of other OEMs’s Camera apps (with full Manual Mode) because it is the beauty of Android.

  • DBS

1 – I don’t disagree when you say “it shouldn’t have performance issues at all when doing basic stuff”. It sort of does though. Which is why I think Americans have a good reason to complain (like we Europeans can sh*t on the G6 for lacking the Qi wireless charging present in the US version).

2 – He favours his right hand. If you click first on a phone than the other, then it’s more than natural that one potentially opens the app faster since it received the input first.
But at any rate, this sort of test is absolute bullsh*t because launching times and real life performance are quite different. Heck, I’ve seen the snapdragon 430-powered Nokia 6 open apps faster than a SD820 powered phone.

3 – Oh I won’t even bother with talking about image quality. That’s been more than discussed. No, I’m talking about launching times and shooting times. The S8 doesn’t “lock focus” because it’s constantly focusing. That helps making it faster. But you can see that the Xperia takes extra time AFTER taking the photo to become ready again. That’s because Sony needs to process extra info and they didn’t put the phone processing in the background (similar to what Nokia used to do with their old Nokia 930 etc where they put the post-processing working on the background to release the camera to shoot more stuff).

4 – It’s called a discussion? I don’t need to go tell the video creator anything. He does whatever he pleases with his YouTube channel. He certainly has an audience for those sort of videos. It doesn’t make the videos trustworthy. They’re entertainment. But they shouldn’t be taken as any serious testing of hardware.

Hope I made myself clear here.

  • Joahn

Talking about science you cant get absense of light(maybe in black hole). Anyway, under normal light condition, your screen reflects light from surrounding light source. Therefore, the difference of lcd black and oled black isnt a great deal. Also, you can go close to true colour just by tuning settings. Like how you cant buy $100 monitor and make its colour accurate as $1000 monitor.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    1. A flagship isn’t a flagship to have such funny performance issues. It’s more reasonable if it’s something serious like it can’t play Crysis very well. Good to have an agreement on that.

    2. How can you be so sure about that? You know more about him than he himself? Lol that’s just an illogical excuse. It’s not super accurate but very far from being biased towards the right hand. And it’s not his probkem

  • DBS

1 – Yeah. But then again, I think we’ll always find performance issues with any chipset on any phone. ’cause it will always depend on what the OEM prioritises when optimising the software.

2 – Uh…I have a functioning pair of eyes and YouTube has an option for slowing down the video? I mean, it’s not that hard…
I didn’t say it was his problem that he favours his right hand. He can’t control that. It’s just a problem with the accuracy of the test itself, which is why I don’t think these “tests” should be taken seriously. I mean, there’s a reason why companies spend millions on proper testing machines instead of cutting costs and just putting people clicking displays etc lol

  • DBS

“Anyway, under normal light condition, your screen reflects light from surrounding light source. Therefore, the difference of lcd black and oled black isnt a great deal”

Except it is. Under normal light conditions, if light hits black – absence of light – it won’t reflect light because black does not reflect light (the glass reflects light, not the screen). An LCD, which never ever produces black, will simply lighted up the dark grey.

“Also, you can go close to true colour just by tuning settings.”

As I said, AMOLED screens can be tweaked to achieve what some people perceive as “true colour” (which is another problem…people’s eyes do NOT perceive colours the same way). But an LCD screen will NEVER be able to do that because it simply can’t produce black to start with.

There’s a reason why everyone is ditching LCD technology in favour of AMOLED. LG will be doing it on their next flagship (V30) and once they do, Sony will be the only bigger brand who will – probably – continue to insist in using LCD instead of AMOLED. Thus falling even more behind (and it’s not like Sony can’t do AMOLED displays. They already do OLED televisions).

  • Itsarapong Intoum

It’s the worthy thing to do isn’t ?

About full manual I want the default camera app to has it because when you use 3rd party app on Xperia you will notice that camera api of Xperia is really creepy !

slowest shutter speed available there is only 1/10s !!

  • LeviYO

XZ Premium is a solid winner here, great to see someone has put them both to the test! I keep seeing people complaining about the bezels but I’m quite sure if Sony copied the same display you’d all be quick to defend that they are not copying the Samsung. I think it’s great Sony have delivered another solid flagship with proof it’s faster than the S8+. As Kariko mentioned in this comment section, when using landscape mode it’s nice to have that section above and below where you can’t mistouch. It definitely would be nice to see a release from Sony where the display is a lot bigger and the bezels are smaller (there’s a few concept images floating about on the web which look great) but I still personally think they are stunning and well made devices offering a very different look and aesthetics compared to other manufacturers, that’s for sure.

  • Szabó Béla

I belive they will open up a new position for a lead phone interior arhitect instantly for you once you tell them how to.

  • Szabó Béla

Day one patch is coming for low light photography for that the phone needs to come out first. Until then the reviews aren’t final/legit. The bezels are there for the stereo speakers. State of the art camera, and heat distribution.

  • Szabó Béla

Yes you did, and you are right, but DBS gone crazy here. For him facts dosn’t matter.

  • razorg

That’s rude buddy. Please forgive me (!) if I felt I had the right to express my opinion as a fellow Sony fan, as well as a loyal customer for years. I’ll bear in mind what you might think of next time I’ll comment here Your Holiness… (!)

  • LazAndKor

Also the XZ1 will have the new Sony design as well ! But, im getting the XZ Premium.

  • azzido

Yeah, I heard they tried to put camera, processor and image driver for screen as far as poasible from each other since these 3 items are producing most heat. And then they applied triple copper layer on entire back to dissipate this heat. In result reviewers are shocked how cool is the device, even in most demanding cases it is a bit worm only!!! So due to these hated bezels we have:

    1. No hump for rear camera
    2. Stereo speakers
    3. Cooler device
    4. Due to point 3 processor does not throttle its speed or does it much less than competition. This also allowed to clock it 100MHz faster than S8.

Who on earth is still against these bezels??? Only the brainless that doesn’t understand the above reasons.

    I love Sony’s bezels!!!

  • azzido

I agree here, Sony’s UI is fast but after a years turned to be too simple, minimalistic and boring. They really need to work on Xperia Home in order to differentiate from ugly stock Android and competition somehow. New camera app would be very welcomes for XZ Premium. Hope Sony will give this task to the same people who made a great upgrade to panorama app.

Great job for panorama should be also applied for other apps and entire camera app.

  • azzido

Remember external dedicated cameras for smartphones? I think there was like 3 differwnt ones. I would like new better one!

The only issue was you couldn’t decide which one to pick as one was better in optical zoom, second with image quality due to 1″ sensor etc.

Sony we need new and 1 only upgrade to this dedicated cameras that we could buy for our smartphones! But ultimate one and not 5 different ones.

    Please make it happen!
People if you can please upvote me for Sony to see it.

  • azzido

Overall XZ Premium is decent device. Hope it will sell well and sales will not be weakened by poor marketing.

Anyone saw any TV advert of XZ Premium so far?

  • azzido

I am afraid that without supporting campaign again only loyal fans will buy it :(

No matter how good it is if people will not hear about it then sales may not be great.

  • azzido

There is nothing like samsung in the world…

    There is only ShameSung!

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    1. I mean I know every smartphone will always have performance problems because they are just smartphones with years behind of power underneath, but I can’t seem to deal with the fact that it costs $800 as a flagship with flagship high end specs yet easily lags when doing basic stuff. That’s just unacceptable for something you paid in that price.

    2. If touching two phones at the same time isn’t the most accurate way of testing a phone’s speed, I just don’t know what.
Benchmarks are often paid or cheated.
Time lapping their opening times (ala-PhoneBuff) can’t be accurate because of different response times.

This is purely just out of curiousity and you’re not wrong, it’s not really that scientific, but Idk any other else of testing the performance of a device unless you do a real world speed test. And I don’t think it’s worth for a fan to cheat on his videos. I am also a big Sony fan, but it’s not worth my time to be biased and make Sony look good.
Sure it’ll make me sad if I see Sony lose, but you know, it’s the end result and everyone must accept it.
I have seen many times on his channel (Phone Battles) that Sony loses a battle but I really never made any such excuse whatsoever.

  • DBS

There wasn’t a simple fact presented. Your problem is that you don’t know the definition of the word “fact”, mate.

  • DBS

1 – My point is that that happens with any flagship. Sony’s, for example, have cameras that overheat out of nowhere. And the XZP also costs 750€.
The iPixels from Google came with crappy lenses that ended up producing a flare that couldn’t be corrected by software.
And the G6, if the G5 and G4 before it are anything to go by, will likely bootloop or have its motherboard die out of nowhere.
You’re right though. When one pays upwards of 500€ for a smartphone it should NOT have any problem whatsoever. It shouldn’t overheat, it shouldn’t have crap hardware and it should most definitely not explode.

2 – It’s not the touching. It’s using two different hands. A more accurate way would be, for example, to use two fingers of the same hand to click them. Or always use only one finger from one hand and time the interval between the finger touching the screen and the app opening (this one would, of course, prevent side-by-side comparisons)

These tests are entertainment. They have zero value, even for consumers. Because no two people use their phones the same way and performance and fastness of a phone will ALWAYS depend on a bunch of stuff. And even if the author of a video tries to replicate the type of apps installed etc, it will never be possible because OEM’s bake a ton of different stuff into their versions of Android.

I personally couldn’t care less for this sort of YouTube video (so much that I don’t know the channel, and I didn’t become interested in knowing more about it). What I think matters in the end is the end-consumer experience. And there, it seems that even if Sony were to nail all these “tests”, it wouldn’t matter as they’re clearly not being able to attract new customers NOR retaining their existing customers. And at the end of the day, there’s no amount of YouTube videos that can change that.

Ever seen a amoled photo editing monitor? There’s a reason why.

  • DBS

I wouldn’t know. I deliberately avoided having children lest they came out like you and I’d be forced to do the only decent thing : abort them.

  • DBS

I have. And you will too and will see more and more in the future.
Ever saw any poorly calibrated screen? ’cause that’s far more important in image work.

Unlike you, I haven’t needed by parents to buy me anything in a few decades.

The thing is, most of the people out there don’t think about how the phone is built on the inside and why it is built like that. They just care about the outside..

I didn’t meant to be mean, it just getting funy that your comment is present under every single video / test / post / review for the XZ. Everyone seems to know enginering and phone interior design a lot better than the guys at sony. If it’s soo easy to put all the tech in without using up the space they require then someone should tell them and show them how it’s done.
My comment wasn’t against you. I just come to the point where i had to express my self, simply couldn’t hold it back anymore.

  • Biancoceleste

    Link to buy one?

Poorly calibrated screen is what you get on galaxy panels.

  • Biancoceleste

Dude you aren’t old enough to pull yourself yet, let alone have kids. You’re fooling nobody.

  • Biancoceleste

Sure buddy, trawling various phone sites spouting hundreds of childish nonsense “my phone is better than yours” is a sure sign of a person above 13. Nice try though.

Admit it, before your olds got you an S7, you never even dialled a phone in your life.

  • Biancoceleste

    Damn that wasn’t even close.
Until Samsung ditch touchwizz or whatever it’s called now, one pays a thousand dollars for the usual lag, stutter and cheap build. Downright embarrassing considering we’re in 2017.
    I’d bet a Xperia Z5 on nougat would outperform a S8.

  • Biancoceleste

Less is more… There’s a reason that is such a famous quote.

  • DBS

You were still a glimpse in the milkman’s eye and I was already around, mate. But sure, suit yourself kiddo.

It’s funny, though. I haven’t seen yet a single useful comment with content from you. All you do is whine that someone doesn’t follow your half-baked opinions. But sure. You’re an adult and I’m the kid, even though I’m pretty sure I’m older than you.

  • DBS

I defy you to find a single time I’ve given any credit to these tests, anywhere.

  • DBS

Just because no woman has ever touched you, there’s no need to reflect your life on other people, little one.

    But nice try.

  • DBS

If you’re going to put links, maybe you’d like to rrad them first before you make a arse of yourself. ’cause that article just confirms what I said so far.

You might think you can see whatever you want but in the end, reality is that you’re just a butthurt fanboy with very limited reading skils.

  • TimmY

Good phone. Too bad I can’t buy it because of that reflective back.

  • Mohamed adel ali

lol the only samsung phone i owned was Samsung Galaxy y and right now i use sony xperia z1 for almost 3 year so i don’t need to pretend to say my point

  • Alex Norris

It`s that because, Sony has removed its shell over android, it now has a stock android, and the Samsung still has its own shell over android, which slows the speed. That’s all. If you will watch early xperia`s they was slower than the Galaxy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL7FXV0G9i0

  • roeshak

It’s worth noting that these videos were uploaded by someone who used to call himself Xperia fan lol

  • kabiluddin

Very well said. That razorg dude comment here as if he is a great engineer and Sony should model phone upon his instruction/advice.

  • Kurt Kobaine

Yea right. The Samsung is faster during that time not because of optimise software but hardware. S6 uses ufs 2.0 while Sony uses emmc. It’s obvious of Sony uses same hardware Samsung be raped

  • azzido

“The thing is, most of the people out there don’t think”

  • Innosaint Nwoke

Well said… And to your point 3. The XZP has the predictive capture to make up for that lost moment.(Impressive stuff). Sony went all out in this one.

  • DBS

Who told you you’re relevant to judge whether I’m relevant or not. Look at this idiot here trying to be important. Like the world was going to wait for you to aprove of my opinion. ahahahahahahah Please do us a favour, don’t kill yourself. You’d have to be buried or cremated and the Earth is polluted enough without filth like you laying in it.
I promise, I won’t miss you. Nor your bad grammar. In fact, no one will.

  • DBS

Suck it, moron. Reality must hurt you more than the big black guy with whom you share your jail cell you little b*tch.

  • DBS

I’ve had a Z3 Compact motherboard die after only 12 months. And its headphonejack after another 7 months. So, I wouldn’t say Sony’s are more reliable.

By the way, repair costs are zero before the 2 year mark in Europe (UK included, for now). So those 260 pounds would only apply if the person broke their screen (and then it’s their fault) or if the phone was out of warranty…at which point, after 2 years, those 260 pounds would be better spent on a new phone.

  • The One

Most American’s don’t even know that Sony makes phones, so this region is already a lost cause.

  • The One

People complain about the bezels because they’re bigger than the Z series devices. The speakers haven’t gotten any better, so why are the bezels larger now than they used to be?

  • The One

The bezels are not there for the speakers – the Xperia Z series had smaller bezels and still used stereo front facing speakers. There is simply no need to have such a hideous design for a phone in 2017.

  • The One

They really need optical image stabilization. Then you might get less noise from low light images because you can use a slower shutter speed to compensate for ISO.

  • The One

The Z series had smaller bezels and stereo speakers. It’s totally possible to have both!

  • The One

Agreed – As I keep saying, the Z series had smaller bezels and stereo speakers. It’s totally possible to have both!

  • The One

The Z series had smaller bezels and stereo speakers. It’s totally possible to have both!

  • Emil Oskarsson

    You’re absolutely right! :D

  • Szabó Béla

Seems like i just have to repeat myself, the bezels are there to the stereo speakers, the camera, and heat distribution.
And they make it confortable to hold the phone while watching videos, or playing games. Plus we don’t mufle the speakers straigh away.

  • Nwoke Chinedu Iheanacho

Riiiiiggghhhttt… am typing this from a jail cell. Oh guess what am African. Reality says xzp performs better than s8. Thats happy reality to me…

  • Nwoke Chinedu Iheanacho

I thought trolls dont get pissed off. LOL Come on dude, at least make up your own comments and stop copying ideas like samsung copies stuffs from all over. Oh, I see where U get Ur copy skills from. Come on, reply me soon

  • razorg

I might have commented a lot, but every single time, lot’s of people agreed with my by upvoting my comments. I’m deliberately posting it every single time in order to make Sony realise what majority of their supporters want, because a company won’t survive unless it meets the needs of a greater public than it does right now. And judging by all the comments here, the majority wants something new from Sony. I don’t understand how someone can be so devoted to a company to support it every single time with a blindfold. I used to be a heavy Samsung sympathizer until S2/S3 era, and then for Sony up until now because Sammy boy thinks they are Apple or something nowadays. The only company meeting most of my wishes is Sony, but they have been so stubborn to innovate recently. I’m a loyal customer, I bought a Sony, I made my brother buy Sony, I made my best friend buy Sony. But that doesn’t mean I will do ANYTHING without judging or objecting for Sony, in the end, I’m still paying SH.T loads of money for it, and I live in the REAL WORLD where money is hard-earned, so I can’t just spend to fulfill my fantasies. Sony isn’t cheaper than their competitors, and they’re not giving out their devices free like a charity. If this company is not yet bankrupt it’s because of people me and a whole lot of loyal customers supporting them. And this gives me the right to express my likes/dislikes whenever and wherever I want. And I won’t stop complaining until we see a proper action from Sony to turn things around…

  • razorg

Oh yeah? As a matter of fact, I’m an engineering student and I have no idea what the f.ck you do for a living (I guess going around on the internet, openly attacking people you disagree with is the one…) and how it entitles you with the right to judge me. If you’ve satisfied yourself by attacking me here, great. I’m more than happy to brighten up the lives of such pathetic people, like yourself. You can keep replying back to me and insulting me if that’ll keep you further satisfied. If that doesn’t do it, go f.ck a goat ;)

  • Szabó Béla

Under proper action you mean a less impressive camera, shitty mono speakers, a fingerprint sensor hidden on the back. Over heating issues or reduced CPU perrformance? That’s what you are asking for.

  • kabiluddin

You are a total failure of an engineer and a big loser. In fact it will be an insult to compare your intelligent to a human, you are dumber than a monkey. Monkey like shouldn’t come to human site. Go back to your jungle and F your monkey mate.

I hope that satisfied you. Reply to me if you want more satisfaction. ;)

  • razorg

There are no overheating issues with S835 to take such action against it though and I doubt all the camera sensors are producing “that much” heat to require some compensation…

  • razorg

Yeah yeah :) If you finally got that out of your system I’m happy ;) …

  • kabiluddin

You seems to be an expert in goat fucking. Please share your amazing experience. here.

  • razorg

Did that goat joke touch a nerve? ;) One does not get offended if the accusation has a bit of truth in it for the accused ;) My only experience with a goat is feeding them grass in a petting zoo. I’m not sure if you ever was so innocent with a goat ;) And I’ve just turned my Disqus notification emails OFF. This way I will never ever be notified of your replies in case you ever decide to share one of your goat experiences with us… Also I hope you get a phone with the biggest bezels ever in the future :) Take care, keep the goat happy ;)

  • Szabó Béla

No one was talking about issue with over heating.
    It’s about heath and cooling.
Thx to the larger flat surface it has better cooling. It allowed them to set the CPU to be faster.

  • Szabó Béla

And to be precise before you would jerk on the line that could make you belive i miss understand what i have said.
Less cooling has to ressult in reduced CPU performance OR In over heating issues. Samy went with the reduced performance. Well no one goes with overheating issues on purpose.Sony went with better coolong better performance.

  • The One

Once again, the Z series solved all of these issues (with less power efficient chip sets) and did so without such huge bezels. I’m not saying the bezels need to look like Samsung’s, but they don’t need to look this massive either.

  • kabiluddin

If you think your pathetic joke can touch a nerve of mine than good for you. Keep sleeping with your goat and be happy with your goat. But I don’t think people are willing to sleep with goat just because you suggest it. Monkey like you are a perfect match for goat.

  • Moisés

He used to test only Sony phones. Now he has many brands.

I have read 1 million units were sold during pre-sale in Taiwan.
But I do not know if the website I got this from is faithful.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Unfortunately Kaz’s really stubborn to keep using EIS… Well EIS is good for video recording though…

Funny thing is while other brand keep empowering on still image capture SONY choose to empowering video recording XD

  • Gahead

I’ve owned several Xperia’s since the Xperia S,P and J till my recent Z5 Compact, I’ve owned some Samsung too from the original Galaxy Tab to Note 3 and 5 and I want to answer your statement in which I guess you didn’t understand why Sony is doing it like that.

first the UI, if you’re a fan or owned several Xperia Phones like me
there’s this UI by Sony before called “Timescape UI” it’s a beautiful customized UI till Sony decides to drop it down when Android Jellybean came out, like Touchwiz, that UI despite its look, is prone much to lag, stutters and it’s the cause of software updates delay to Sony (Sony was way behind in terms of android updates since Sony Ericsson but LOOK AT THEM NOW! they’re one of the earliest to receive the updates) in which in Android Jellybean they kinda trimmed the UI over and over close to the stock until what Sony Xperia’s UI now are today which is A GOOD THING! cause that’s what we call OPTIMIZATION ,the result? faster speed for opening of app, better ram management unlike Samsung’s Grace UX besides plenty of people wants the stock UI, before people want the Nexus phones because they’re faster due to its non-bloated UI and I prefer Sony not to customize the UI , they just change the icons and VOILA! many Xperia owners here since the Original Z have a good experience of the near stock UI now cause their phone steel feels like brand new when using it, can Samsung’s Touch wiz or Grace UX achieve that? NO!

  • Gahead

    Second,
what Full manual are you talking about?
they already provide the Manual Focus, Manual shutter speed, adjustable ISO at its full resolution since the Xperia XZ came out which they include the X, X performance and X Compact (too bad we Z5 series users didn’t have one but I’ll let that slide maybe due to marketing again)
if what you’re talking about it RAW image then users must continously message Sony to provide one so it will exist, if you’re talking about slower shutter speed(5-30 seconds), I might agree there and I wish Sony will gave us more slower shutter speed but for now they didn’t because they have the Sony QX series before phase out but whatever photography is not limited to only Milkyway shots and it doesn’t bother me “that much”

    oh about image quality?
LEARN MANUAL,Sony Xperia’s is best at Manual, My Z5 Compact can still even beat the iPhone 7 Plus’s camera and yes they need to fix the superiour auto for just point and shoot users but if you’re using it for mobile photography for pete’s sake Most photographers use MANUAL (period)

    Third
dual speakers, definitely agree here, they should make it a little louder for a STEREO speaker but without losing that audio clarity, despite Xperia’s speaker volume, it’s quality is superb than the iPhone and galaxy S’s

  • monoke

I’ve seen quite a few of these and gotta say, the s8 has got to be the slowest real world based of the current gen chips. They say they’ve toned down their skin but I’m not buying that one bit. Just too many redundant features, overdone animations, non-optimizations, ram management. Not a fan of their software in the slightest.

  • monoke

Even though these were released around the same time, they’re 2 completely different internals. Plus, xperias could only rely on the faulty sd810 which overheated and throttle like heck. It’d be more fair to compare to other sd810 devices for this reason. Give the z3+ the same internals as the s6 and I can guarantee u it’ll perform better all day. And it’s a combination of optimization and hardware that makes a difference, not whether it has an oem skin overlay or stock skin.

  • Dennis

Don’t care about the performance, although the Xperia does kick some ass here. Offcourse i want solid performance but if my phone is not the fastest that’s ok with me..
Personaly I love the design of Sony phones, just because they are different! In my opinion all other phones look way to similair to each other.
The most important for me is the UI, which i like from sony and stability. And sony does have the most stable software (in terms of crashes/ reboots) of all manufacturers.

So i can’t wait until next week when i will get my pre ordered Xperia XZ premium :)

  • Mohamed adel ali

yes Sony xperia performance is great i mean they can add more feature regardless it’s in the new OS or no they depend on the OS feature only why they didn’t try to add a new feature from them self
even the Chinese manufacture they have add a lot feature to their phone that’s what i want Sony to do that’s all

But the camera sensor was smaller, Z series did not have additional 1GB memory stack within camera sensor to capture superfast 960fps videos. This requires space, you will not cheat the physics.

  • azzido

Agree, most American’s don’t know where is the Europe on the map… But this is another story…

  • Shooting Raw with he S8+ and edited with Lightroom and see how the image is still sharp even with all that shadow recovery https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b2446c7cb69c1470046959a7dfa705ed4e86cbae2209e25488de56ce3f74d2ff.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4ffb4f0d3c10608b75cb9dfac68bd364c131691f3bbc26ea27f540db99652cb3.jpg

Low light with flash is nasty regardless of what low light situation you’re in unless you’re using a bounce flash method on DSLR, and if you’re taking night scenery, flash is basically unless.

  • I’m still using the first generation Note to watch YouTube and browse Wikipedia. Just got myself an S8+ last week and it is just awesome,

I say it is mostly user problem rather than the hardware itself. People needs to learn how to handle stuff.

  • MrWalker1000

sony does have a lot of features though. just because the UI is simple and nice doesnt mean it lacks features.

in fact many software features were originally pioneered by sony later copied by samsung. Sony never does gimmicks, it only adds stuff if its quality.

  • MrWalker1000

how do you get great shots with manul mode on xperia?

  • MrWalker1000

minimalism doesnt mean boring it still has great features and camera choices.

sony focuses on simplicity but that doesnt mean lack of features.what they do lack is gimmicky bs you find from samsung

  • MrWalker1000

ive also noticed that too. these tests are unreliable beucase you can never press both phones at exactly the same time.

however, in general everyday you can kind of round up your experience on which is faster and sony phones are still faster evenwhen you take the overall exprience

  • MrWalker1000

the VR experience will be better on the xz premium thanks to higher resolution and pixel layout.

the s8 isn’t sharp because of pentile arrangment

  • Gahead

if using a Xperia’s that has no shutter speed control and manual focus (Z5 series and latter Z series) I often use the lowest ISO for daylight shots (50) but you can achieve a much lesser ISO at 40 by adjusting the exposure value meanwhile for lowlight avoid I usually adjust between 50-200 only or use SCN night mode for better lowlight (these things are being though by my photographer friend who is also well known for using his Xperia)

    as for the X-series
it’s just a matter of shutter speed adjustments, although the ISO can’t be adjusted together with the shutter speed, there’s a trick for achieving such ISO’s by adjusting the exposure value together with the shutter speed.

  • iia3ezu

I would take ‘reviews’ from an Xperia fanboy with a heavy pinch of salt. I would prefer to see a comprehensive and professional comparison review done by more unbiased tech reviewers e.g. MKBHD, Mr Mobile etc.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtr_4TnjzulPJQ9UjNrnvZA/about

    Channel description:

    Previously known as Xperia Fan….

I rest my case. Even the Youtube channel’s banner has Xperia phones on them.

I have my misgivings about Samsung S8/S8+ (curved screen, 18.5:9 aspect ratio, Bixby button, fingerprint scanner position), but the Samsung phones will outsell any of Sony’s offerings, no contest.

Samsung is super aggressive in R&D and marketing; Sony is half-hearted, and doesn’t really care about Xperia phones when Playstation, movies and camera sensors bring in much more revenue.

And what’s with the bezels? They were acceptable in 2012, not in 2017.

Trust the Japanese to be cowardly now when the Koreans and Chinese are eating their lunch.

  • Lam Mbang

Guys…really wanna ask, after reading that the XZ Premium has redesign lens camera, is it the same with XZs? Thanks for the answer.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

First image looks terribly noisy. I can’t even make any fine details with it.
    Second one looks too soft.

I suggest you do a proper comparison.
Here’s the proper one I have found:
    https://recombu.com/mobile/article/htc-u11-camera-vs-galaxy-s8-vs-pixel-vs-iphone-7-plus-vs-xz-premium

  • azzido

Again, for me it is boring and stock Android looks ugly. When it comes to great camera choices:

    https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ-Premium/XZP-camera-has-serious-distortion-issue/td-p/1226669/highlight/false

  • It is because both are the same image whereas the second one is the original shot and the first one undergoes shadow recovery from lightroom just to see how well the sensor performs under low light with higher ISO. This is usually how we test ISO performance in DSLR or mirrorless.

Here’s some other comparison I found to be more interesting
    http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g6_samsung_galaxy_s8_sony_xperia_xz_premium-review-1612p7.php

  • The One

TRUE – but neither does the XZ or XZ Compact – both of these devices changed the design language from the Z series to include these extra large bezels for seemingly no reason.

  • The One

LOL – they know where Europe is, they just can’t name or locate any European countries other than the UK and maybe France. And they think anything East of Germany is part of the “Middle East”

  • MrWalker1000

sony does need to do something new with its UI though not to keep it boring. Like maybe change teh design or something

  • MrWalker1000

so you like samsung with its shitty clunky software.

Sony could use a redesign on its UI to keep it interesting but you can’t argue that its not superior to samsung. It has clever features and album and music app are way better.

  • MrWalker1000

thats why marketing is important and why samsung and apples make so many sales.

I feel like Sony has great potential in the US if its included in all US carriers and advertised on tv. no reason for sony not to become popular that way.

  • MrWalker1000

this is something people overlook. having a newer processor makes a big difference. No point in buying XZs when you can get the better newer xz premium.

  • MrWalker1000

sony definitely needs to reduce bezels. The screen to body ration is worse on the new XZ premium than the z5 premium.

Tbh i liked the face of the Z5 premium more because less bezels and hidden speaker slots.

  • MrWalker1000

xz premium so tempting because of its 4k.

  • MrWalker1000

yes. but xz p takes better pictures because of the better processing speed of the 835. Not worth getting the XZs imo when you get the xz premium or wait for xz1 ifa.

  • MrWalker1000

samsung every year everyone always says this is the best samsung software etc. Apprently new s8 software is very simple?

It does look interesting though to look at. Thats one thing Sony needs to do is change the design of the UI to make it more interesting. its a bit boring looking.

  • MrWalker1000

i love how samsung can fail so catastrophically and people will still buy their phones. if that was sony or any other phone nobody would buy it

  • MrWalker1000

singh maybe sony has become more reliable but their older z3 is plagued with issues.

My z3c front panel comes off due to the glue not working properly. I can look at the inside of my phone because of this. as a result my proximity sensor doesn’t work and calls are basically impossible to do because the other side cannot hear me nor can I hear the other side.

Really bad. my phone was working perfect but these 6 months or this issue of the panel coming off is terrible and shame on sony.

idk even know what to do tbh

  • maffhew10

Camera speed, but obviously not camera image quality.

Please Sony DO something, you give sony sensors to every brands on the planet (LG, Samsung, Apple) and the pictures taken with Sony devices are always one step behind…

I don’t know if it’s hardware or sofware issue, but please, this story is hilariously too long…

  • Innosaint Nwoke is right. Let him be. Trying to put a new phone down with an old phone seems to pathetic. Small-minded men cannot understand the ambitions of great men.The size of your ambition is a measure of how big of a man you are. He will never understand what ‘WE’ think.

  • It’s simple really – one produces a safe and effective phone, the other produces a ticking time bomb that is concealed by plastic surgery. Which one would you go for?

  • MrWalker1000

yeah i have the z3c i usually just change higher resolution on manual and base ISO at 50.

do you do anything with metering.

so 50-200 only for low light? what about indoor shots do you ever use anything above 200 iso? what about hdr does it help in lowlight situations

  • HAWX

    Well post

  • Shamoy Rahman

Yeah, Sony is fixing each issue one by one in each generation, once they go all in on the camera software, they’ll outdo the entire competition.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Now they need to figure out how to make the device as compact as possible with the same cooling efficiency.

I totally agree with you, compared to the Z5 premium it does looks rather different bezel wise and subtle speaker ports. I do love the Z series, I’m starting to think the X series is a slight let down compared to the Z.

  • MrWalker1000

the xz premium is the best phone sony has made arguably. its just the speaker slots and smaller bezels of z5 premium look better.

they just need a design overhaul is all.

thanks man I needed this for my sony xperia z3c. The trick is always low light shots. it usually takes great shots if you just adjust ISo at 50.

any idea what to do with spot metering?

i use z3c. it seems like 200 iso is really low for low light. 50 iso at daylight produces great results sony is not as bad as people make it to be.
