Sony H8541 spec sheet appears – could this be the next Xperia flagship?

by XB on 30th November 2017

in Rumours

A purported spec sheet for a Sony H8541 Xperia smartphone popped up on Reddit, which looks to have been snapped from someone’s screen in China. If true, the model number alone suggests we are looking at a premium device, although the specs themselves appear to belong very much to 2017, and not entirely different to the Xperia XZ Premium.

What is likely to be different, however, is the design. Assuming that Sony continues to use a 16:9 ratio display – we have seen no evidence so far that suggests Sony is moving to 18:9 – then it looks like the Sony H8541 will have some of the slimmest bezels yet seen on an Xperia device. This handset is rumoured to incorporate a 5.7-inch 4K display in a body with dimensions of 149 x 74 x 7.5 mm.

Don’t assume bezels will be as slim as the iPhone X or Galaxy S8 though, the more likely outcome is something similar to the Xperia XA1 Ultra. This will enable Sony to broadly keep its design signature without looking like a ‘me-too’ bezel-less clone. Reddit user Piastavgo created some mock-ups giving an idea of what to expect. Let us know what you think of this type of design in the comments below.

In terms of other rumoured specs, the Sony H8541 will use a Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, and support IP68 water resistance. It will have a 3420mAh battery and include Bluetooth 5.0, running on Android 8.0 Oreo.

    Replacement for XZs = february

Replacement for XZ Premium = september

  • Zayed Kotayba

I wish this rumour turns to be true!

  • Harish jackie

Highly hyped. Hope it has a improved camera specifications with good Dynamic range processing.
    (Portrait mode is mostly welcomed)

  • dpc4321

    Sounds awesome!

  • If the device above comes with the shown lean bezels, with stereo, top and down front-facing speakers, with OLED or LCD-120Hz, 4k mAh battery, and a 19-21 mp camera with the 960fps slow-mo, it’ll be the BEST phone of 2018.

Except it won’t, because Sony will do NONE of the above. What a fantasy world when it comes to Sony

  • Moisés

    There is protrait.. Background Defocus.

  • Moisés

Most of your list is available on current phones.

  • Harish jackie

But it is not fast and good. It requires good lighting and requires a very steady hand to capture a decent bokeh. Most importantly we have to access it in a separate menu. What i expect is something instant and good. You know what I’m sayin.

  • A mí no me pagan por opinar

Maybe that would be the “best phone of 2018”, for you and those people who like useless features and sparkles and superfluous shit to brag about (960fps slow-mo? Really?).

There’s other people who like a quality construction and design, good battery life, strongness and that smooth-feeling using your phone. That’s what Sony delivers on its phones. I’ve been with my Z1 for 4 YEARS and it’s still working great! Not even a single scratch on its screen!

  • Ryan Kumar Jassi

Im not sure if your aware but some of the X series devices ship with 120hz 1080p panels including the XZ Premium but only at 1080p on that one. Its just that Sony hasnt enabled the feature yet.

  • SONY only

    Snapdragon 835 hahahahahahahaha

  • Itsarapong Intoum

wait a moment… There’s G8541 rumours three month ago… and it disappear then come back again as H8541…

There’s no uaprof and gfxbench result yet. So… I doubt this rumours…

  • Tochi Nwodu

not bad at all with such bezel please maintain the rounded edges on the xperia xz1
reason i didnt buy the xperia xzp was the edges are plastic then on the xperia xz1 was smaller display

  • Warren Chang

i wish they design a phone with audiophile grade sound similar to onkyo DP-CMX1 (it kills G6 and v30 but only mid range specs) with snapdragon 835, 4gb. using s master amp, *(think walkman nw-2 but with modern spec and phone feature), they can have 3 flagships, the XZ premium successor which is this phone – H8541 , XZ1 successor with smaller bezel, and new walkman originated phone,

with walkman orientated phone, audiophile grade sound and high components for audio (isolated power supply, ft-caps, balanced output, ldac, aptx hd and bluetooth 5.0), they can sell for the price of a note 8 or iphone x ( around US$900-1000)

  • rs

Bad idea. Mainstream people just dont give a shit about how their smartphone sound. Heck, my gf even couldnt tell the difference between my astell&kern DAP and her iphone 6 in the matter of sound.
And with that price to compete and something not that appealing to mainstream consumers, they will just go with the note 8 or the iphone x

  • Itsarapong Intoum

That’s just to much… just use cirrus logic, ES sabre, wolfson is good enough.

  • Warren Chang

a upgraded dac is not enough

  • Warren Chang

they need to market it to make it relevant, there is a market and potential this could be expanding market one as people realise sound quality is like standard resolution tv and high resolution.

even better with choice whether they want to use standard 3.5mm jack or higher bit rate wireless.

some people especially females can be skeptical, but i noted that some was not aware of higher quality earphones can make a big difference, until they tried some and never went back down

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Well the qualcomm DAC is freaking ridiculous to use and I don’t know why SONY keep using it.

adding high power headphone amp make the phone use more battery and oh well…

  • MrWalker1000

htc uses qualcomm dac yet it sounds really good

  • Geralt

Seems like Sony is pulling off a XZ1s here. Similar to what they did with XZs.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

which model of HTC do you mean ? Recent model use cirrus logic.

  • Rohit Patil

I am all good if it is not omni-balanced. Had too much of it since XZ to XXZ n XXZ Premium. Bring on the new design Sony….U know u r best at it…!! :-)

  • Marinko Agic

If is flagship,it will be end of Sony Mobile.
Must be 6GB, Snapdragon 845,4K screen, very loud stereospeakers and whole new camera, the best ever.

  • KzX

    There’s a another device leaked with 845 and 6GB

  • Moisés

Yes. But with too wide lens it is more complicated.
Even the background defocus has to be used very close to work well.

Sony has 25mm. The second cam of iphone has almost 60mm.

  • Moisés

    Next Premium in September…

    Don’t panic!!!!!

  • dimz

From what I can tell from the dimensions alone, this is the successor to the XZ1, not the premium. The next premium will probably be something similar to this one, i.e. as big a display as possible before they have to stop shrinking bezels and start enlarging the chassis, but with roughly the same dimensions as the previous premium..

  • dimz

Samsung probably hogged the first batch of 845s for the S9 so Sony must’ve had to make a choice, similar to what happened with the LG G6.

  • theskig

Bezels are OK for me. But with 64 giga of memory please DON’T PUT A HYBRID TRAY on Dual version. Thanks.

  • Why just that? Why not aim for 32 GB RAM, four 845s in an SMP configuration, 8K screen, Bang & Olufsen 22.2 audio, and at least 6 cameras capable of 8K video each?

  • Fatir Ali

  • dale kana

It would be nice. I’d buy it if the form factor was accurate. I like my XZ1 for it’s zippyness so an additional screen space would be welcomed.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

    Replacement for XZs = february

Replacement for XZ Premium = september

  • danne94

We’ll have to wait till next year when
Sony release 18:9 flagship (If the rumors were true). Sony is always
behind when it comes to industrial design on their smartphone. Lets hope the best from Sony.

  • Suhail

  • danne94

The next flagship that I hope to look out from Sony in 2018:

    – 4K OLED HDR display
    – 18:9 bezel-less display
    – Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
    – Full Camera2 API (RAW support)
    – Snapdragon 845
    – 4GB ram or more
    – Very good battery life (Prefer 4000+ mAh)
    – Android version updates for at least 3 years (Like Pixel 2 devices)

  • Geeeesh, calm down!

960fps slow-mo? Really? Really Really? Wasn’t sony the first to ship a camera with that feature? You mean they should take that away in 2018 on their flagship phones? Seriously?

“useless features and sparkles and superfluous shit to brag about” – What are you talking about?

A 4k mAh battery is ‘shit’ and ‘useless’? A 21mp camera is ‘shit’ and ‘superflous’? Don’t sony already make phones with that high mp cameras?

Sony already does some of the best LCDs on the market. Flipping up to 120hz is superflous and ‘shit’ and useless?

You’re the reason why sony doesn’t grow, because instead of thinking ahead of the smartphone curve, you’re still stuck in your little old cubicle of success, with no chance of growth.

All the features I mentioned are USEFUL for any user in 2017, and will be in 2018 onwards.

I didn’t ask for FaceID. I didn’t ask for smartphone with in-built projectors. I didn’t ask for 15,000 mAh battery for the phone. All the points I listed are DOABLE and can be done, except people like you also prevent Sony from stretching their innovations.

Sony’s been doing virtually the same phone each year since 2014 and you’re comfortable with it. You’re on the Z1 for 4 years. You’ve likely never bothered upgrading because none of the newer versions tickled you, considering they’re all this rectangularly boxy devices with either reduced battery juice or less powerful stereo speakers.

If you think any of the features I asked for are gimmick, useless and whatnot, wait until next year. Sony will be left in the dust.

Sony’s smartphone sales are dwindling, and you’re here telling me sony makes ” quality construction and design, good battery life, strongness and that smooth-feeling using your phone.”

Can’t they do more? I used the Z2 for like 2 years. Took some of the best photos of my past with that device. Today, I’m NOT buying a Sony phone if I go to the smartphone market, when there’s Pixel XL 2 and Razer Phone.

Please allow sony to grow, and stop thinking in delimiting ways for Sony. Please Let Sony Grow, please, at least for their sake of their revenue!

  • Current sony phones? Is there a 4k mAh Sony phone with lean bezels with stereo front-facing speakers with 120hz screen and a 960fps camera?

  • hansip

there’s a chance that this is going to be a real 4K screen i.e. 4096×2160, which will have a 17:9 screen, meaning the extra screen is solely dedicated to the on screen buttons. just a guess though.. seeing that Sony does like to stick to the standard format.

  • Out of the while things, this is the best:
“This will enable Sony to broadly keep its design signature without looking like a ‘me-too’ bezel-less clone. ” (Big Applaud)

  • S.H.U.R.O.

Sony has already lost the battle of first half 2018 year. The same processor, this is the first problem, the second problem: one camera, and traditionally, with the most crappy algorithms on the market and poorly implemented 960 frames, lack of optical zoom. As a result, what we have only, a new screen and optical stabilization (which does not help much in obtaining high-quality images). That’s all) Galaxy S9 and Huawei P12, will be much more interesting, in all aspects.

  • azzido

4GB of Ram in 2018 and snap 835 instead of 845??? Battery ahould be bigger too (5.7″ screen).

    No thank you.
Maybe it ia 2018 mid range? Another xperia XA? Then it is ok.

  • azzido

Well the specs looks too 2017, what I like is bezels, are smaller but not too small, I like then when I keep the phone horizontally.

    FM Radio is there?

  • Phil Gym

I like the dimention. Device in question looks concept phones that I see on youtube, and I like it. Still the specs look odd. SD835?

  • Exactly. Sony keeps shooting themselves in the foot, and yet when their dwindling quarterly revenue reports are in, they whine.

It might appear tech reviewers are biased against Sony. However, the truth of the matter is, Sony hasn’t been doing anything interesting since 2014. Literally NOTHING!

S9 and P12 will indeed be interesting. Pixel XL 3 will be a blast. Can’t wait to see the Razor Phone 2. Exciting times ahead for the smartphone manufacturers who are willing to sell devices, and unlike Sony, really impress users with new useful functionalities and performance

  • Zayed Kotayba

LoL that was savage but I would have to agree with him about the RAM.
More RAM + Android = Better Experience

  • Jerrysofresh

  • Jerrysofresh

  • Jerrysofresh

    where ?

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

Please have native DSD playback via Qualcomm Aqstic

  • Vinny Conforto

    I don’t need 4k on a phone. It’s just overkilling

  • Vinny Conforto

yeah there are a lot of great concept designs on youtube

  • Vinny Conforto

    4K is redundant

  • dragonsneeze

I like this idea, and sounds more plausible when you consider their statement about fps needing that side bezel.

  • Richard Brutski

18:9 is terrible. Give me 16:9 any day.

  • jamie evans

  • Nick Wong

I used to agree, but if the screen is AMOLED then the bezels just “get bigger”, which is fine with me. For apps that are non-media, having extra scroll space and room for on screen buttons is great.

  • Jaissal S

That is a fab idea! I loved my w550i, w880i, w890i. Would love to use those phones again ahaha. Such amazing design. Miss those days.

  • Warren Chang

yes, bring back walkman and cybershot could revitalise their market

  • MrWalker1000

sony either makes it or breaks it with mirai they can’t mess this one up. the bezels woulds till be considered way too big in comparison to competition.

  • MrWalker1000

cant deny this sony’s last great phone was the z3 which was ahead of its time. the 2017 lineup played catch up though they are still very good devices.

  • dragonsneeze

you know what? the side bezelless one will still be cosidered as “not that small”. I bet people will still complain about 1-2 percent difference in screen to body ratio. Others will say a speaker is not a valid reason for a larger bottom bezel, but won’t say anything for the gigantic iPhone bezels because fps. When it comes to Sony, they can’t win either way. People started complaining about it not being a 2:1 aspect already. I expect Sony to surprise everyone with the new design. XA design with smaller chins is not a design overhaul.

  • MrWalker1000

there is a lot riding with this one. Mirai needs to live up to its name and that will mean a lot of pressure for them because mirai means future and it really has to be able to feel like a phone from the future.

yeah, google pixel has slightly bigger bezels but has retained front facing speakers on their XL model. im guessing sony is going to be similar in that regard.

at least we are gonna get 4k screen in better form factor than the XZP.

  • MrWalker1000

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I see, I’ve not try the 10 but only u11.

  • dragonsneeze

Yes, exactly. Mirai needs to be a miracle :P
And honestly those long screens with side bezels look whole lotta ugly. If the speculations come true, sony will have bigger top-bottom bezels only.

  • Me

Still have big bezel tho :/

  • Thariq Mohammed
  • Anders O

agree …. just hate the long slim screen …. Love 16:9

  • Sony should buy Rubin’s Essential Phone company and make it their next Xperia platform…
It takes them ages to get up to speed with the market on screen to body ratio!
But yes, I love their Compact line (the only proper small-sized smartphone), so I won’t move away…

  • Joe Smith

no such thing as used to or not, do anyx nmw
