Official pics of Xperia XA2 Ultra, XA2 and L2 leaked

by XB on 4th January 2018

in Rumours, Xperia L series, Xperia XA series

Leakster extraordinaire Evan Blass (@evleaks) has started the New Year with a bang, giving us a first official look of three upcoming Sony smartphones – the Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia XA2 mid-rangers, as well as the entry-level Xperia L2.

The design used is very similar to last year’s Xperia XA1 models, with very thin side bezels, but larger bezels on the top and bottoms of the device. There will no doubt be some that complain about bezels, but we always thought the XA1 series looked pretty great for a mid-range offering.

When compared to last year’s models, the images confirm that Sony has added a fingerprint sensor to all models this time round. However, as seen in recent leaks, Sony will mount the fingerprint sensor on the rear of the handset for the first time. It will be interesting to see whether Sony adopts a similar fingerprint sensor placement for its flagship devices this year.

The pictures confirm that the Xperia XA2 Ultra will feature dual front-facing (selfie) cameras, along with a front-facing LED flash. The Xperia XA2 only features one front-facing camera, but it looks like a large sensor. Both devices will have dedicated camera buttons and launch with Android Oreo.

From what we have seen in previous leaks, the Xperia XA2 Ultra (H42XX) is expected to have a 6-inch 1080p display, powered by a Snapdragon 630 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. It may feature dual 15MP selfie cameras, and a 23MP rear camera. The Xperia XA2 (H41XX) is expected to have a 5-inch (or 5.2-inch) 1080p display, with a Snapdragon 630 chipset, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, a 23MP rear camera and 8MP selfie camera.

The Xperia L2 (H43XX) has a similar design, but appears to be made of a different material compared to the Xperia XZ2 Ultra and XA2, which wouldn’t surprise given the likely lower price point. The Xperia L2 is likely to launch with Android Nougat and is rumoured to feature either a 5.2-inch (or 5.5-inch) 720p display.

These press pictures also highlight that Sony is using the same loops wallpaper theme it used last year, albeit with a space galaxy twist.

  • Laraib

First ! Was expecting less bezels

  • Moisés

    I like the Ultra….

The cam of XA2 must be same 8MP, but wider angle lenses.
Only thing I do not like is that the rear cam of XA2 is too high, should be placed a bit below.

  • Antero Masonen

I think they are announcing these devices in CES and flagship phones in mwc because always leaks of images come week before initial announcement

  • Antero Masonen

I think xa2 ultra and l2 is around 76-78% stb and xa2 like 72 pretty same as galaxy a and nokia 6 2018

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

    Not bad

  • Moisés

    I like all colors..

Is XA2 blue or green? My phone and laptop show pretty different colors.

  • Moisés

    I agree

  • Moisés

Ultra and XA have shorter bottom bezels, like all Ultras and C series.
    L2 has the opposite

  • KarFar

XA2 looks good with very acceptable bezels, very similar to ‘bezelless’ HTC U11+.

  • Alvin

The special sony lockscreen clock is gone and I’m very sad.

  • Moisés

    6″ FHD
    SD 630
    23MP
    16MP + 16 MP ( looks like different angles)
    3GB/32GB or 4GB/64GB

  • Alvin

    It is blue.

  • And we will have a press only about the flagship. Must be special!

  • Antero Masonen

English please I dont speak Georgian language :D

  • vin

    Totally buying the XA2

  • Santos

    Fake

  • Santos

For what is the third hole/eye/thing in The XA2 Ultra, it does not appear to be flash.
Btw: I love the colors of the live wallpaper, probably we’ll see more of Any Surface Ui design

  • Moisés

He says the Compact Flagship will sadly be 18:9 and 5″ FHD

  • Moisés

    XA2 Ultra

Back = camera, led flash and fingerprint scanner

Front = two cameras, led flash, proximity sensor

  • Moisés

    Slashleaks says 16 + 16

  • Moisés

Evento da Sony no MWC é mais empolgante que o da IFA.
Assisti ao evento do XZ Premium pelo tablet. Foi ótimo.
O do XZ1 foi bem fraco e sem graça.

  • Moisés

    Thanks…

    Like XZ1c or XA1+ ?

  • dragonsneeze

I can only see black. Where are the other colors?

  • Nodar Sixarulidze

    it’s true ;)

  • Nodar Sixarulidze

    gfxbench says 16+8

  • razorg

Oh that’d be awesome though ! Excited

  • dragonsneeze

XA2 will be 8mm. Trust me I use Gimp.

  • Moisés

    Looks like more than 8mm.

  • Moisés

    18:9 is bad..

Black bars for videos, PS Remote. Then round corners on screen to make phone looks like G6.

  • dragonsneeze

if the screen is 5′ according to my calculations it’s 8, and if it’s 5.2 then it could go around 8.3
Take a look at XZ from the side, they are similar. But I can be wrong. I hope I’m not because according to previous leaks it’s supposed to be almost 1cm.

  • Moisés

Try to close app and open again. Article has it now.

  • dragonsneeze

Thanks, I looked up Blass’ and saw them. Blue looks like XZ1C’s blue.

  • razorg

18:9 or 16:9 I don’t really mind. What I want is slimmer bezels, thicker than Galaxy phones, but slimmer than it is now. I’d be happy :)

  • monoke

There’s a bloody awful slight oval curvature screen and back of the XA2’s. They need to leave these edge gimmick screens to Sammys as they’re completely useless and annoying!
If they eff up the flagships with this same gimmicky design, than I am out. I keep hoping Sony comes thru but they keep letting me down these past couple years.

  • Moisés

I heard that back would be curved like LG G4 or Moto G 2015. Then at middle 9.5mm.
    Looks flat to me..

You are probably right, looks thinner than XZ.

  • Moisés

I’d rather see it 4.7″ with same height.

  • Moisés

L2 will be perfect for my parents.
I’d rather give them X but hybrid slot is a big con..

  • dragonsneeze

Can’t see the cam hump from the side, maybe you’re right. I don’t think it’s curved either. Guess we’ll see at CES.

  • azzido

Looks ok for low / mid rangers but fingerprint on the back is not acceptable for me.

Hope there will be new name for flagship and not XZ2… It would be great to name it Z6.

  • Sungkyung Kim

I hope the different design on the flagship!
Basically, the design of those phones are almost the same with my 3 year 7 months old Xperia Z2!

  • Clamser

    Design from stone Age!

  • mixedfish

Dafuq are you on about, Sony don’t do curved edge screens.

  • comme des garcons

All the phones look the same to me

  • comme des garcons

    agreed

  • xXEΠDEЯ ҒЯEΔҜXx

But they said they ended the Z lineup already, so they will name the rest with an X in front

  • xXEΠDEЯ ҒЯEΔҜXx

Dude, those are 2D glass…but they don’t curve as much as the SAMSUNGs

  • xXEΠDEЯ ҒЯEΔҜXx

Plus it is possible to have bezeless display on a 16:9

  • kurakuradisco

    xa2 looks good…

  • John ford

more of the same, but I hope Sony has more of a major change in design for its flagship devices.

  • John ford

    You got that right

  • John ford

How do you know those ratios?

  • John ford

    as always…

  • Alvin

The date shown in all phones are feb 25, so it will be announced at MWC. But they got leaked this soon so there’s a possibility that it will be announced at CES

  • hansip

The XA2 is really nice and not too thick bezels.. Me likey.. But if battery doesn’t get as close as XA1 Plus, i’d still take XA1 Plus then.

  • monoke

It’s hard to tell cuz it’s press photos but if you look closely the screen is not completely flat. There’s a subtle slope toward the edges. If they showed a top view, you’ll clearly see it better. It’s not the 2.5D at the very edges I’m talking about but the entire phone is shaped like a literal oval!

  • monoke

Look closely at the press photos… Do u notice side reflections? The whitish hue. Go back and look at the renders in the other article. Try to look at the top profile and you’ll notice the phone is a slight oval shaped. This is what I mean. The screen is not completely flat anymore.

  • MyLive

The bezzels DOES reduce (compare to XA1 series).. And yes pretty acceptable.. Look like the one on xz1 compact.. And I guess it will feel smaller when hold in hands..

Keep being different SONY.. Don’t follow other trend with that bezzeless, rounded body followed by rounded screen which is now being to common :)

  • Alvin

    like XA1+

  • Alvin

yeah, as long as it is beautiful, I don’t mind using a phone from stone age.

  • Alvin

please don’t believe this guy. Everything he’s telling you is either a fake dream from himself or a news from another site.

  • Alvin

there’s a formula for that, you could look it up in the internet or just use a screen-to-body ratio calculator online too.

  • Alvin

Yup. I prefer the old clock that came with Z3+ and Z5, though. A bit unique, simple, but beautiful and functional.

  • Yasir Fawad

The new design will be marketed as designs that naturally fit in your hands. Remember VIVAZ. The new flagships will follow vivaz like naturally fitting in hands design.

  • monoke

Yes exactly, ovalish shaped like the N9. Never used the N9 myself but I imagine the sloping screen works hand in hand with the swiping gestures of it’s ui… Sony’s decision seems aesthetic over function.

I am not a fan because of concerns of annoying glare especially when outside. But I guess we won’t know for sure until we see the real deal.
Yep, back fps is stupid also. Hopefully the flagships retain the side scanner or better yet on screen, but I doubt that.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

SD630, as far as I know, doesn’t support dual 16mp cameras, be it on the front or back. Maybe it can do 8mp + 8mp or 16mp+8mp.

Besides, two high resolution cameras may lead to image quality loss especially in low light conditions.

  • Vitali P

    Sony wake up!
They have to start with a new design in 2018, not that old thing. Nobody wants to buy these smatphones with big bezels in 2018. I hope that it’s not too late for the XZ Pro-A, it needs definitely a new fresh desig!

  • ruhail khan

I’m waiting for a 6inch phone with 4k,display, waterproof and with least bazzle,. Please sony do it for me.. It’ll be my 20th xperia device.

  • Amaury Alejandro Farias Cea

When the Xperia XZ premium information was filtered, the image of the mobile was for May 7 and was presented on February 27

Sony in 2018: time for a change

  • Alvin

Yes, I knew that. Actually, XA1 has that May 7 date too! (they were all announced at mwc)

  • Alvin
  • Khalid Abdi

    It says

    # SonyRumor # Sony next year to move the new machine, said that as far as I know it does not tickle it.
    1, next year new products will be released in batches in CES, MWC, IFA, but which specific show which made a few, no comment;
    2, the so-called camera “unlimited high quality”, “all-digital image stabilization” HDR + 屌 effect “to enhance the shooting results of the new technology pie has a certain reference, but when specific release, no comment;
    3, the location of the fingerprint changes, the battery capacity increases, are basically Qualcomm processors, But what specific configuration to use, no comment;
    4, now see all the models are fake, but also do not use excitement law, no comment;
5, this year the rise of a few smart phones feature will be launched next year, but what can be achieved, no comment.

  • KarFar

That’s google translate but whatever. Point 4 is confusing what did he (or google translate) mean by “do not use excitement law”? We shouldn’t have high hopes?

  • Khalid Abdi

Yes, it’s google translation and I don’t know what he meant by excitement law but some of the rumours i guess are true and I’m afraid that Sony puts the fingerprint sensor on the back in the flagships.

  • dragonsneeze

if they announce it at CES this will be another proof that someting big is cooking for the MWC. If XA2 comes with FHD 5.2″ that’s also evidence that XZ2 will have bigger screen because they generally don’t release directly competing screens for different segments.

  • Alvin

    Yup

  • jamie evans

    You are exactly right

  • Sony at least change their design once 2 years. Maybe a little, but there is some change.
If we look on the budget models of the most serious competitions – Samsung, we could see that their budget models look like Galaxy S3.
So way all hate the way Sony keeps their design, when their “god” Samsung is doing the same it for longer? It make You all looks stupid…

  • I cannot agree. Till Z5 Sony used one design. It changed, at least with some devices – Xperia XZ looks more like Lumia 920, than older Xperias.

And why this groaning with no change of Sony’s design, when other competition does the same (with budget models only, but still) for a lot longer (compare galaxy a7 2017 and Galaxy S3).

  • I prefer Ultra. But both are nice :)

  • Look at that from other side – there is at least fingerprint scanner- XA/XA1 didn’t have one.
And I believe scanner in power button may be something special available only in flagship Xperias.

  • You can read? Or not?
It was said many times that new Mirai design will come to flagship devices…
And look at the other manufactureers – Samsung uses same design for their budget models like their used with Galaxy S3, similar with Xiaomi. But You only see Sonys mistakes…
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/941dbffb3054822013dea88dc6bc0899543d092238e6b0cd0aebe8b456313674.png

  • I even read 15 + 15. To many “leaks” :P

  • Sungkyung Kim

    Galaxy? Out of topic.
    I didn’t mention it. Did I?
Indeed, Samsung changed the design of its flagship phone, by designing edge, less bezel, etc.

Basically, the design of Sony Xperia is consistent with only minor change.
That’s what I meant to say. I hoped the major change, like the thinner bezel, round shped, etc, on its newly scheduled model.

  • Salvador Penilla

The lense on the back looks like a T2 ultra… 2014.

  • (ror)

Did you just honestly said these phones “are almost the same” to your Xperia Z2? As an advise, you should look for a less stupid excuse because you can’t afford a new Xperia.

  • (ror)

You mean “all the phones from others brands look the same” because they don’t even use their logos anymore and you can’t tell them apart on the stores, the only phones that look different are Sony, maybe that’s why there are so many Sony-jealous out there.

  • Sungkyung Kim

    Fun. Yes, I did.
Nothing to do with an “excuse”.
However, Excuse? Isn’t it rude to say like that?

Those phones [on this blog, like XA2, L2] are not ‘fascinating’ enough to replace in my personal perspective of view.
Of course, if the newer one meets my standard, can change it!

  • Fefe

What he means is that he probably know the actual design of the phones and those leaked ones are fake but don’t have to provoke him because he wouldn’t give any info bout it.

  • Samsung was just an example. Seems to be to hard to uderstand for some people…

Basically none of manufacturers change their overall design. 1-2 phones out of 20 or more each year shows that.
However (non)intelligent people start attacking only Sony
It’s stupid… But world is full of morons…

  • (ror)

So you didn’t like the Z3 and Z4 (the last one with curves and slimmest) you didn’t like the Z5 line with straight lines, you didn’t like the XZ line that combines shapes with metal, it seems to me you are looking for excuses or you are a Sony-hater

  • azzido

If they will mount fingerprint sensor on the back in flagship I will skip it and wait until someone at Sony will start to think again… Simple.

  • azzido

    Sadly.
And how this decision negatively impacted the sales we already know.

  • Nodar Sixarulidze

Xperia XZ1 Premium photo-renders of real design. http://vortex.ge/siaxleebi/sony-xperia-xz1-premium-165

  • Sungkyung Kim

Sony-hater? that’s too much. You went too far.
I have been using Sony Xperia Z2 since May 2014.
It works so fine with no issue. It is so durable. Then why do I hate or seek an excuse?
    I didn’t mean to say that I dislike Z3, Z4, Z5, or so.

I hoped the newer flagship’s design to be like
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKMPRArddi4

It is the conceptual design, with the thinner bezel.
I liked Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc design,

  • Vinny Conforto

    yeah boring

  • Phil Gym

Every phone looks identical and boring

  • Wow the design looks so.. disappointing (-_-)

  • Timmy

    Is that Xiaomi???

  • Okarin Titor
  • kurakuradisco

just watched XA2 video introduction on Xperia FB page.. XA2 really2 grow on me..

  • Sampahio Damaceno

    is that you, Xperia S?

  • I still prefer XA Ultra. But $544 for it (price of it in my country, with taxes) is to much. I paid half of it for ZUK Z2 Pro with Snap 820 and 6/128… (ofc without taxes)
