Now that 2017 has come and gone, it’s an appropriate time to ask you to choose your favourite Sony Xperia device of the year. The Xperia XZ was the runaway favourite in 2016, taking nearly 60 per cent of the votes, but which handset will reign supreme in 2017?
Sony Mobile launched 9 Xperia devices during the year, despite continued comments that it is rationalising its smartphone portfolio. Judging by the number of model numbers seen for upcoming Xperia models, it looks like 2018 will be no different.
Sony’s flagship scene was dominated by the Xperia XZ Premium with its 4K HDR display and 960fps slow motion video recording. The same camera was used for the Xperia XZs, and latterly the Xperia XZ1/XZ1 Compact. It was great to see Sony deliver a true flagship Compact device, unlike what we saw in 2016.
Then we had Sony’s mid-rangers, the Xperia XA1 family, all of which looked great with their thin side bezels and provided a firm offering across the 5-inch to 6-inch size points. Sony’s budget end was taken care of by the Xperia L1, and in India only, the Xperia R1 and R1 Plus.
