Here is a fan-created 3D model of what the Xperia XZ2 Compact may look like

by XB on 21st February 2018

in Rumours

To say that there has been an adverse reaction to the recent Xperia XZ2 Compact prototype picture we posted, is a bit of an understatement. It remains to be seen what the final product will look like, but we believe that the picture is representative of the final version. Anyway, this is only one angle of the phone, and perhaps the most unflattering one, so we can understand the reaction.

To lighten up the mood here, one of our readers ‘CG’ has taken that prototype picture as an approximation, to create a 3D model of what the final handset may end up looking like. What do you think? Still hate it just as much? We’ll bring you any further news when we have it, there’s only a matter of days now until the full reveal.

  • Antero Masonen

Kinda neet front is ok but side is 2.5/5

  • DBS

Yup. It’s just a Nokia Lumia rip-off… But done wrong ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • SteveB

I highly doubt that the top and bottom bezels will be that small. Sony seems to really love large bezels. The bigger the better.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Well let’s just find out what we see on 26th, I sorta like it but not like it :D But definitely don’t hate it. I remember having issues with Sony phones but in real life I loved them.

Edit: But I really hope to see two front facing cameras. Plus Sony recently renamed the Background defocus app to Bokeh so I am guessing they’re going with portrait mode after all.

  • Manuel Picos Otero

with my respects to its creator,it is ugly and bland,it looks like a cheap chinese phone.

  • dpc4321

I hope the real thing is going to look a bit more “premium”

  • Moisés

E3 looks like flagship compared to this.

  • KKTK

    Ugly bobble.

  • KarFar

That’s a nice 100$ phone but why there’s a SONY logo on it?

  • Zayed Kotayba

It looks okey from the front but the back is so ugly also I hate the fact that the power button is not the SONY signature power button which we saw in the XA2 lineup.

  • Khalid Abdi

Guys have it occurred to you this could be a new mid ranger because it doesn’t have Sony’s signature button and there is a news which says that a source said there will be a 3 new mid rangers with Snapdragon 660
    here is the link

  • paul_cus

  • Alex Norris
  • it’s look like ugly…. and not gonna happen, because it’s 11mm and flagship devices are making thinner….

  • Though the same. A lot of sources are telling about it

  • Khalid Abdi

Yeah but till now Sony never made a real leak but few FCC documents and a video teaser. Sony is barely giving information and so much secretive about what they’re doing. So why are we all judging and jumping to conclusions???

  • Bulitz

It doesn’t look flagship at all.

  • I´m not! I´m sharing information to reflect on that. I´m still watching the MWC monday morning! :D

  • Eshrak Kader

the back looks like a battery bulging out…… I hope the real thing looks nicer.

  • Khalid Abdi

I wasn’t talking about you, I was talking every one but good we need to be positive because at the end of the day we never felt with Sony cause of design, we felt in love with because of their technology
And yeah me too going to wake up for it in the morning to watch it :))

  • H. Daniel Cruz

It’s not that I hate it, it’s just that for being a ‘premium phone’ (and I guess it will have a premium price), in that photo it doesn’t look premium at all, it just look like an old mid-ranger from Nokia or Motorola, but i think I’ll wait until the official reveal, maybe that photo don’t make it justice.

EDIT: What I really don’t like is that it will not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • el_sur

  • Yes! And if we want Sony to envolve, they need to sell more. With the new placment of the fingerprint, that could help since more useres can buy in the US market. I´m really suprised by all the secretism. I´m anxios for monday!

  • Khalid Abdi

I agree with you and I wanted them to implement the under glass fingerprint but because they didn’t plan for it I think. Because, planing of the phones begins with releasing of a previous phone like now with what is going to come in IFA I think. Because it’s a matter of time everyone does the fingerprint under the glass whether it was for OLED or LCD.

The secretism I can understand cause of 1. this year is their 10th anniversary with the Xperia line 2. They’re secretive with even their other things like who knew that they would a fingerprint under the glass and making it a transparent for LCD!!

  • Виталий

I can accept any design changes, but moving of scanner to the rear in top models, it’s like below the belt.

  • H. Daniel Cruz

To be honest, I always loved Sony for the sleek design of its products, its MDR-1R and recent MDR-1000x headphones, the VAIO Z-Flip, the first PS4 model, even the PS Vita. And in the Xperia family I really liked the design of the Xperia X1, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z5 (which is the one I currently have).

In the photo, that phone doesn’t appeal to me, it looks like an old mid-range from Nokia or Motorola, but I’ll wait to see the official release to judge it, what disappoint me (if true) is the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • Alvin

Somehow, I don’t think that is true. I’m positive that the design will be different to this. Sony is not dumb enough to do such thing (using this design in 2018 and call it ‘Mirai’).

  • Alvin

Lol the three mid rangers that Phonearena first suspected was actually XA2 and L2, nothing to see there. There will only be flagship models for MWC.

  • Khalid Abdi

Nice and I love Sony for everything they created and have tons of technology plus with their designs
By the renders sometimes differ from the final product so let’s see :D

  • Khalid Abdi

Maybe but new rumours resurfaced and other sites mentioned the same thing so we don’t know what might happen but we’ll hope for the better

  • Though the same, and i have and Z5 and i´m planning to switch to XZP, but this desing… If the compact really have that dimension, and that big screen, the confort in the hand could be held by this tipe of design. But on monday we can say it all.
Sharing my tweeter if you want to talk on monday morning :P

  • washinma2424

Okay, thanks for your opinion but if that thing is metal in glass I like it a lot.

  • G-UNIT_(Z)

    new e4g compact

  • usersparadise

And we still have no news about the camera on that thing…

  • Khalid Abdi

Maybe I thought about it too

  • Ognjen Markovic

Welp… at least it still has the camera button i guess

  • Yahya AlJamal

Sony is excelling in making ugly ass phones.
    Samsung’s midrangers are better looking

  • méz geri

i loved the glossy brick design… it was unique. now it looks like the 50% of all phones out there

  • Emil Oskarsson

When in saw the teaser, the only thing that came up in my mind was “borderless” so I share the same thought as you do. That the curves indicate something to do with the front of the phone not the back and how it is shaped :)

  • Moisés

Why not just make equal to XA2 but 13,2cm tall?
    Would be better.

  • Moisés

Like G Flex but curved from left to right instead up/down?

  • Kurisu Makise

If it’s real, I’ll never buy Xperia Smartphone again. And I’ll not recognize that as a Sony Smartphone.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

Thats some HTC phone from the past

  • CheapMonk

    My Z5C is 127×64 ; so this grows 11mm !!!! is it still a compact ? i just expected the reverse !!!!
a smaller, lighter compact ; and what about the weight of that egg ? my Z5C is already too much for my taste. I restrained myself a looooong time not to buy the iPhoneSE, but think it will be my last option ( I hate crApple) . How is it Apple is only the one who designs something to my taste? and i’m sure they sell tons of them.
And the FPS no more on the power button ????
How are you supposed to handle this phone with only one hand ? (the right one ) when it’s already at the limit with the Z5C ?

Hey Sony, Compact is Compact and it means something … a device which is small, light, powerful enough, long stamina and which you can handle easily with only one hand.

  • Cecco1970Effeffe

Surely the intentions are good, but I think, indeed, I hope that they remain the most angular corners as it has been in many Xperia.
Add that an increased thickness could also be a good place to insert with the camera’s sensor, an optical stabilizer, also an optical zoom .. I wonder may be a further novelty Xperia!

  • dragonsneeze

I think more like old school Sony Ericsson era like this

  • azzido

This actually would be great. I just hope back is not the one from render, I mean no egg at the back :/

  • dragonsneeze

To me, all loop surface needed was these curves and like 72% stb. Some people said a curved back, some people said curved top and bottom. I was hoping an amalgam of post designs with an arched back, slightly rounder caps and loop sides. But seems like this hump may not be what it seems. So I’ll hold final judgement. It sure looks funny for now.

  • Manuel Picos Otero

    what a beauty.

  • Steve

make a render of XZ2, maybe thinner and higher is better

  • Alvin

    Look at G Flex 2 render. You’ll see what I mean…

  • comme des garcons

  • Moisés

FCC document points to 13,5 tall. I believe it is smaller than iphone 8 and Samsung A3.
    5″ screen.
    Maybe 3000mAh.

  • CG

Since I did originally post these images, I may as well clarify:

    1. These renderings were only an approximation to show the picture posted by “Grisha” from different viewing angles (except I did integrate slightly smaller bezels since “Grisha” mentioned that it would be the case).
    2. The dimensions are only a best guess from comparing the XZ2 prototype to the Z5 compact on the same photo. From what we know today (from Swedroid), the screen will be 5″, 18:9 ratio, which was not the case in these renderings which show a 5.2″ screen.

Now if we update a tiny bit this prototype with a 5″ screen and slightly smaller “belly” (shrink to 136mm x 65mm x 10mm), and if we also try some color variations, It will already look a little different.

So here are updated pics I did based on the possible above changes:

Please keep in mind these images are not portraying the final XZ2 compact, nor my own idea of what it should be. In fact I don’t like this design myself: too soft and rounded for Sony ! I hope the final product will be nicer.

Also note that I’m no master at renderings :)

  • RockStar2005

    Hope you’re right Alvin. lol

I hope I’m right too, lol..

  • RockStar2005

So what makes you so positive, out of curiosity?

  • RockStar2005

I like your enthusiasm Alvin!! lol

  • John ford

It looks a budget phone to me

  • iia3ezu

    Just another fanboy mockup.

A phone which looks like this belongs to the bargain bin. Think Samsung’s J-series Galaxy, or the Moto E-series.

  • iia3ezu

Cheap Chinese phones today are far more premium and better value for money than the crap Sony churns out.

Go have a look at Xiaomi’s website.

  • Sadman Khan

You mean the teaser that shows curves and a hand? I think that’s for Acoustic Display (Sound produced through display) like on the higher end Bravias

  • hansip

I dub thee aa Xperia Y.. As in.. Why?

  • Alvin

I think the technology isn’t ready yet for phones. But if they’ve refined the Acoustic Surface to work great on phones, I would be extremely happy.

  • Alvin
  • Aiden Pearce

no offense but its down right ugly!!!
reminds me of iphone with their UGLY battery cover

  • MyLive

Is that SONY? Somebody please wake me up..

  • dragonsneeze

    Cmon spill. :D

  • Gambi

Looks just like the millions cheap ass chinese phones from dogee cheapee and friends

  • Mohammed Alaskar

if they eager to put a front logo then the bezels will be HUGE Again.
just skip it back logo is enough,
BRAVIA team put the logo very small in the corner in the lastest OLED model so they make it bazel-less .

  • Tann

Still have my Neo. :-). Yah, it was really cool looking. And cool naming it had too: Neo. Along with Arc, Ray, etc… Waaaay better naming scheme than X, XZ, XZ1 etc….

  • arcu de triumf

They’re trying and trying and trying to come up with all sort of new ideas until now worthless. That curvy shape is not very stable on a surface. And besides there will be more evident scratches in the middle zone if the surface will be cheap plastic (because glass can’t be used). So I’m not very impressed, it looks like an old Alcatel (no offense). But, for the right price, could become interesting :D (say 200 euros 300 max).

  • ben bleho

dreaming of an updated xperia ray.
    these were the days..

  • Stephen

Ah nice, thanks, the blue one with black bezels IMO looks best here.

It does still feel like a step back design-wise from the old design that was uniquely recognisably Sony (if a little tired) to something that feels like a generic mishmash of Apple-from-a-few-years-ago and cheap-no-name.

What’s the unique selling point of the new design? Let’s hope there’s something we’re missing.

  • dragonsneeze

Me neither but I have new info from tech guys in my country, one said fps will be on the side. And they are not one of those people who would lie to get attention. Or maybe they saw a different prototype. But honestly I think Sony is trolling us at this point.

  • Better, but now it’s easier. And I understand why they didn’t want to have to name new device every year.

  • Gambi

Perhaps but the all look the same, more or less the latest Samsung

  • Alvin

No, those people that sort of ‘leaked’ the phones from design and specs are trolling us. Sony is shutting their mouth, closely, firmly.

We’ll finally see the real thing on D-2 or at least D-1.

  • dragonsneeze

Agree with better names. And they used to change up designs more frequently.

  • dragonsneeze

I don’t remember this many speculation over anything, Sony better use this to their advantage. Everybody’s eyes on them. I also can’t trust anyone anymore. It’s like they made 10 different prototypes and hired troll leakers. Monday can’t come soon enough.

  • Alvin

Yup. Sony might pay those trolls to ‘leak’ things that aren’t real. Let’s wait ’till Monday then. :)

  • Reptile64

    It will

  • Reptile64

    Not even close

  • Prateek Bhanushali

3D Touch? May be… or I am assuming too much.

  • Tann

Oh yes, in those days manufacturers did much more in design. Every model totally different. Thats because plastic was used on all, it is waay more designer friendly than metal and glass of today.
Now, they all play around 4-5 design solutions with minimal changes, and just stick a brand name on it.
Although repetitive, at least Sony had somewhat different design all together till now.
And as of monday, if rumors and leaks true, will be just another of the same.

  • I think the back will actually be flat, like the concept pictures we saw way before.

  • Santos

Is the new Live Wallpaper, and AnySurface UI Design

  • Santos

    they also produce more radiation

  • Santos

The waves are part of the Any Surface Ui design concept, rather than the physical design

  • ChiTownT3x

The whole point of the Compact line is to be just that, compact. If they increased the size of the phone to 5 inches it equals a “no thanks” from me. There are plenty of 5″ options out there from other manufacturers at half the price of the $740 they’re asking for. Hopefully the leaked phone is of something else outside of the Compact line. Otherwise it looks like my XZ1 Compact will be the final Sony Compact I purchase.

  • dragonsneeze

Don’t know. I think 3D touch is not very important but who knows.

  • dragonsneeze

Again I agree with you. But Sony was criticized about their not so round designs, maybe these changes will make them more attractive to new customers in expense of their own base. We’ll see soon enough.

  • (ror)

“Trying and trying and trying” looking for excuses is what the Sony-haters do on the comments because they can’t afford it.

  • (ror)

Sony is the only “premium” brand actually so don’t worry.

  • (ror)

So sad, hate and negativity because rumours, fake “news” everywhere.

  • skrug

but by the time it lands on the hand it becomes a straight line

  • Alvin

So why would they made a teaser for us with curved lines, if it’s only to tell us “yeah, the wallpaper is 7 lines that dances”

  • iia3ezu

Perhaps but the all look the same, more or less the latest Samsung

Obviously you have never looked at Chinese phones.

The fact is that quite a number of them had copied design cues from Apple. This is not a complaint.

  • T.B.D F

    :vomir: :iphone3GSdesign:

  • T.B.D F

    Iphone 3GS design :vomir:

  • arcu de triumf

Wrong play friend. I had SE k610i Xperia U Z3C and now XC so quite a hater isn’t it? :D Therefore I know pretty much every good and bad parts of their mobiles. And I know the problems that I had with each model. I just disagree with some of their ideas. No one cares anyway.

  • (ror)

You know “pretty much every good and bad parts of their mobiles” and you just admitted you don’t even have a flagship, maybe you don’t realize but that’s exactly what haters say, that they are fans but just “hate” what don’t know or have, and btw everything scratches even diamond. But i don’t think you’ll be getting a diamond phone if Sony makes one.

  • Tibor Hornyák

    Ugly one

  • Ana Helušić

I agree E3 looks much better

  • hmmm

So now everyone prays for omnibalance design! This would be the best news

  • dapaintrain

    Yeah still hate it

  • Jithendra Suram

If by mistake really the phone looks like this..10 yrs bonding with Xperia will break..

  • tobaka

    to fat

  • AllanKafka

Great modeling and rendering work by CG! But I can’t say I’m in love with the final result.

  • Deborah Pendergrass

    Well here’s the real thing

    Xperia XZ2

    5.7″ Full HD+ 18:9 display
    3180 mAh Battery
    Snapdragon 845
3D glass front and back with aluminium frame
    Colours: Black, Silver, Green, Pink
19 MP F/1.8 Camera with Full HD 960fps super slo-mo and 4K HDR Recording

    Source: VentureBeat

  • usersparadise

Well, this looks… real. Hopefully they really improved camera.

  • hansip

Still cannot comprehend why Sony doesn’t implement bigger battery than midrange oh well..

  • Khalid Abdi
  • Khalid Abdi
  • nikola mahjar

    watching m0vie 2018 easy t0 see … g00d quality ….
    That’s where I started It enj0y

  • Khalid Abdi
  • algiuz

its using xz premium camera, so no

  • usersparadise

They write: “Around back is the same 19-megapixel, f/1.8 camera setup found on the XZ Premium (…)” The camera of XZP has f/2.0. So maybe there is small advantage.

  • CG

Great to see the real thing for XZ2 !
Then my drawings were in fact pretty close and I think the XZ2 compact will be like this (just changed the color and a added a seam at the glass base on my previous drawing):

  • jonathan

doesn’t look bad at all from the front, back looks decent, it’s the side that looks horrible because of that hump, so much for symmetry and omnibalance, if it looked identical from the back as the front then yeah this could be a buy.

  • Sadman Khan

    I guess you win lol

  • Alvin

Lol. I think I’m losing. Badly.
