Xperia XZ2 Compact prototype makes an appearance

by XB on 19th February 2018

in Rumours

Here it is folks, your first look at the Xperia XZ2 Compact, due to be announced at MWC 2018 next week. The picture below shows the Xperia XZ2 Compact next to a Xperia Z5 Compact. The new design shows the curved bottom, which ties in with Sony’s earlier tease. The image comes from a comment by ‘Grisha’ in our earlier post today about Sony’s MWC video tease.

In the comments, Grisha says that the picture is of a prototype, and may not represent the final version. Grisha goes on to confirm that there is no 3.5mm headphone jack, and that the fingerprint sensor is located on the rear of the device, much like the Xperia XA2 series.

Our understanding from speaking to our contacts is that the picture is representative of the Xperia XZ2 Compact. The final version will have a slightly smaller bezel on the top of the screen. The design also matches the plate + human design concept that was leaked back in 2015. Ultimately though this is basically the Xperia XZ2 Compact. We’ll bring you more details when we have it. [Thanks Grisha!]

I’m sorry if that’s the power button I don’t like it. The Z5 Compact looks way better to me. I’m happy with my XZ Premium I’ll stick with that. The Z5 series could’ve been good if sony gave it more support same for the Z4 series. Spadragon 810 devices were left in the dust quickly. 801 devices will forever be the best in my opinion such as the Z2 and Z3.

If the XZ2 Pro/Premium can be a Z2 with 4K HDR screen bezel less and a 1080p 120hz option since X series displays can do 120hz then it will sell well. Keeping sound by maybe using technology the A1E or A8F TV’s from Sony use then it will be a great seller if it keeps the same OS style that has been used throughout Xperias. The curve of the XZ2 Compact reminds me of the Xperia SP.

I hope the upcoming devices are done right as the XZS was pointless and never sold and the same for the XZ1 which is an XZ Premium with a 1080p screen. I hope they get this right!

  • Melvin22

I have to say the Z5 c looks better, but anyway Sony always make us fall in love with the new devices

  • DBS

So, in resume: it’s a rip-off of the 2011 Nokia Fabula design but done worse, with the only good thing about Xperias left – the fingerprint scanner placement – removed and likely all the defects of the existing XZ1C?

I don’t know why I even bother to think “maybe this time Sony will get it right”.

Seriously…just…just shut down Sony Mobile. At this point it’s just becoming embarrassing to watch the company that did the Z3 Compact fail so hard so many times.

  • Moisés

Oled screen for mobile cannot reach 120Hz, only LCD.
    S8, Pixel 2, iphone X are all 60Hz.

  • Ryan Kumar Jassi

Stuff oled i dislike oled since it can cause screen burn-in and doesn’t really compare to other technologies. Its good for deep blacks but that’s about it.

  • Aiden Pearce

if that is what they are gonna offer, i will pass. The flat back with or without glass is a good choice imo. it was son’y signature. Noting is wrong with current back of the device only issue they should tackle is front.

  • Khalid Abdi
  • RockStar2005

Yeah man. That design was SICK!!

  • RockStar2005

What do you think of this alleged new design Moises?

  • Hopefully the screen will be heavily upgraded, with much smaller bezels, higher resolution (1080) and some image improvement (I don’t think they’d go for OLED)

  • ziegler

    Soap dish design.

If this is true, it means they haven’t changed their plans a bit, even after the leak (in 2015) and all the changes the smartphone market is undergoing. How can they be so stubborn? They deserve bankruptcy.

  • H. Daniel Cruz

mmmmm… it must have a HUGE battery for not having a flat rear, It also must have a 1080p display, stereo speakers and i think they need to change the power button in the final model.

I’d have hoped for something more like the Xperia ARC, my fisrt impression with this picture doesn’t convince me to upgrade my Z5 (specially if there is no 3.5mm headphone jack).

  • Mike Gonzalez

The Z5c is a thick phone and this is even thicker! We must be talking iPhone 3G thick, it’s disrispectful

  • Great Dude

  • dstrike

    it looks like iphone design

  • DBS

Well…Sony actually has an OLED display capable of reaching 120hz in a 5.7″ screen already…Inside the PlayStation VR.

  • Vuyo Ncube
  • Phil Gym

The plate human concept looks cool because it has FLAT PART on the edge. XZ2C DOESN’T. It looks just fat, even fatter than fat Z5C. This is the future(mirai) design of Xperia? smh. Seriously I haven’t seen any attractive Xperia phones after the Z3 Compact

  • Stormrider

    Well said

  • Vinny Conforto

The Z3 Compact is the best Xperia phone ever made by Sony. Since that, it’s been a downward spiral…I don’t know what went wrong

  • Vinny Conforto

fat it doesn’t look 2018 at all

  • monoke

If the main flagship is that ugly with the round back , no headphone jack , fps on back , then I’m out. Everything is a step back in design and functionality it’s not even funny. Let’s just hope this is not the design language of the regular flagships.

  • Ren Jie

For ergonomics, if someone is gonna hold a phone long enough, it will be free publicity word of mouth just by saying it has good ergonomics, Sony has been a champion for that cause and no other manfacturer has taken ergonomics into account, just aesthetics

  • Ren Jie

XSP’s hump is to small so its not as ergonomically nice to hold as shown in the photos, i used to have an XSP and my hands often rest on the metal rim, quite hard to hold for a long period since its quite painful

  • Ren Jie

What about telling LG that? Having big market share but still having a deficit of 10million a year, from business perspective, too drastic a change is sometimes welcome but its too risky and hard to answer to shareholders if the outcome isn’t great.

From Design point of view, being a design student myself, there is just so many designs you can realistically do, one phone will somehow look like another phone if there is the same design drivers (set of ideas) behind designing each phone. Designers value evolution more than just simply restarting on a new slate, since this set of identity is associated with ‘Sony’, one can simply blindly take a look at a phone and say this is a Sony, thats what Sony is attempting to achieve.

  • el_sur
  • Geralt

Also Sony can kick in the 120Hz in the XZP display. They just don’t want to do that. There’s an xda mod which can enable it

  • John ford

Sony thinks, maybe, it looks unique. It looks dated and ugly to me

  • John ford

    well said

  • Genorok

Hopefully they’re wrong on the fingerprint location…with their investment in JDI and the new in screen fingerprint sensors, putting in the back is such a cheap design and inconvenient location.

  • guv

Sorry but this is disgusting. As a loyal Sony fan&user who has been going strong since Xperia T era (and using Z5C for the last 2 years), who made his brother get a Z5 and his best mate a Z3C, I feel betrayed. WTF is this iPhone 3GS like design sh.t?! Really? I will not care if it has humpless OIS camera or 5000mAh battery in it, this design is UNACCPETABLE!

  • comme des garcons

without the bottom belly, this phone could look fine

  • Yahya AlJamal

    That’s ugly af

  • comme des garcons

    “betrayed” yes…

  • Marinko Agic

So now we know what is Sony problem!
They have 3 year past plans for production!
And this is not good! And they dont give up from this plans!

  • Antero Masonen

    Looks like fake

  • Alex Norris

This Y. design the same that we seen 2 years, only Y has smaller bezels, but no more..

  • 3_nity

  • anewprofile

    i just hope its fake.

  • Serdar Gökçe

Sizin yapacağınız tasarımı sikeyim, kaç yıl geriden geliyorsunuz amk…

  • That design was stolen and incorporated into a Chinese OEM phone. Can’t be bothered to find it right now, but it was posted here 1-2 years ago.

  • Tann

I ll stay reserved until official release….
But, if this anything like the real thing, will have no good comnent. Its not even about the worst official concept design, but about no headphone jack…GTFO with that crap!

  • El_Carnicero

Well, that would fit with the video they posted on Twitter with the hand and something curved gently falling into it.

  • Mohammed Alaskar

you can put Nuclear reactor in this ugly thing

  • jonathan

i am going to avoid this like the plague, samsungs look better at this point, it looks like a xperia z3 with it’s battery blown out from too much heat.

  • jonathan

this made me buy the xz1 just now it was on sale.

  • Domus

    Noooo….why Sony!! Why?!?!?!?!?!?!
See this image posted by @khalid_abdi:disqus ??

That is the direction you have to take!!! That!!!

  • Maroun El-Chayeb

I must say i am disappointed, but i looked closely at the picture and i think the phone could look better than it is now in the picture and for me there is some difference between the design concepts and the picture, it is the same idea but there is some differences. it looks like it will be similar to the xa2 devices, the front seems to be the same like on the (old) ones which is odd i think. correct me if i am wrong but i see a dual front camera set up, like on the xa2 ultra, it seems to be metal, and the side bezels are still there, but keep in mind, if this is a real prototype, then it is not final, i can imagine if they refine it a bit, it can look great. what annoys me the most is the transition from side to the back, it is not fluent or it looks like that.

but we will know in just 6 days, so this is the last post i will see when it comes to spoiler because i want to see the phones the first time at the press conference, i am so excited, cant wait any longer

  • hmmm

WHAT A HORRIBLE DESIGN! Why do they have to change the omnibalance with something so ugly???is it iphone or sony?

  • Drin Gjonbalaj

Guys, what about the bottom part is some kind of padded fabric for better grip and ergonomics? Don’t just dismiss the design from a single potato shot. Looks like it will still have a good design with added handling convenience…

  • KarFar

2012 called, it wants its design back…
I think the one ‘leaked’ by FCC is more accurate and it better be…

  • Ana Helušić

This is very disappointing, and no 3.5 jack wooow Sony taking the way of a Crapple

  • mitotsu

If the above design is true, then I made the right choice buying the XZ1C few months ago which looks waaaayyyyy better than that bar of soap. Oh & that soap looks even thicker than my bulging wallet x_x

  • Okarin Titor

    Just small bezzel.. Nothing new..

  • Aiden Pearce

currently the device looks are more important than ergonomics. If it can’t attract new buyers, Sony as well sell soap shaped phones. 2018 will give us many design changes from other companies. the 18:9 ratio is really getting huge response. But if Sony really going for this design, i cant say if they will live 2018, a lot of competition is already there. Even Nokia resurrected themselves.
According to rumors(if they are true), Sony chose to follow the iCrap trend(3.5mm removal) instead of other trend like going bezel-less and and OLED.

  • Aiden Pearce

yup.. actually they should have retained omni-balance with shrunken bezels.. perfect Xperia.

  • insyt

Prototype looks nothing like the concept. Moving the fingerprint scanner will also be a really poor choice.

  • Виталий

I have different feelings about Grisha`s concept. I hope that it`s a fake, but I wanna see something new. So I am still waiting MWC. And in my opinion, any changes are good for present xperia`s situation.

  • Some of the Samsung panels can reach 1000+ nits, DeltaE under 2, and coupled with a fast display controller can hit 200Hz easily – also its sub 1ms response time. OLED can do more than LCD

Granted, the burn-ins are a concern – one that LCD and mLED doesn’t have

  • Moisés

    Corners make the Y.
I have seen a concept with Y design, it looks very premium.

  • Moisés

I dont like… It is too fat.
    Reminds me of E4.

    Y is better.

But there are gossips about a 5″ screen + 3000mAh.

  • John Woot

It looks like a bathtub to be honest. But even worse without audio jack and a vulgar fingerprint on the back instead of the comfort of having it on the side.

  • mikke

Maybe its an add-on battery connected via magnetic pins, so the device itself is flat&thin. wish it was..

  • “Our understanding from speaking to our contacts is that the picture is representative of the Xperia XZ2 Compact.”

  • Read!

  • Read the article again!
“Our understanding from speaking to our contacts is that the picture is representative of the Xperia XZ2 Compact.”

  • dragonsneeze

That’s what I thought, since the teaser hinted at elasticity. Still looks weird and fat.

  • Nidou Xperia™

….It looks like the Xperia E4 and not a premium design.

  • Vitali P

    It looks really fat!

  • Zayed Kotayba

I think this is won’t be the new lineup design or at least has some huge differences for multiple reasons :-
1)The picture shows the prototype compared to Z5C which is not the latest compact phone in the Xperia line also the phone prototype supposed to be leaked in 2015 which is around the time Z5C released which makes me think that it’s only a prototype that was suppose to be the XC but it didn’t .
2)it’s so different than the XA2 series which is very weird and also we used to sony making their phones with the same design for the whole lineup and making some small changes and improvement on their flagship products .
3)it contradict all previous rumors about the thin bezels and the 18:9 aspect ratio .

  • David Hvatov

    Looks shit.

  • Antero Masonen

I agree from front they look like original xa, x and e5 so thry already used it waitung for mirai

  • Read the article again:
“Our understanding from speaking to our contacts is that the picture is representative of the Xperia XZ2 Compact. The final version will have a slightly smaller bezel on the top of the screen. The design also matches the plate + human design concept that was leaked back in 2015. Ultimately though this is basically the Xperia XZ2 Compact. “

  • Khalid Abdi

But it wasn’t an omnibalance design and minimising the bezels and making thin would made the phone beautiful

  • Alvin

Well, lucky for us, that phone in the article is either fake, just a prototype, or an old photo of a cancelled device. That is not how the new compact look like. Let’s see what they have for us next week.

  • méz geri

so ugly, im crying inside. this design is a deal breaker.

  • Khalid Abdi

I think so. But if the implement something important like a finger print underdisplay with their technology, then people might forget worrying about the design because it will attract more attention

  • Khalid Abdi

No that was the loop design

  • Tann

Well, at least its been now confirmed by real insider that the phone in question here IS NOT the new compact Xperia. Phewww, good about that.
Now just the lacking headphone jack rumor remains to be dismissed, and I ll be happy again.

  • Barricade

I’d take a regular Z3 as the best Xperia phone ever.

  • Where?

  • Khalid Abdi

  • shenoy

If this is design then difficult. 2011 Xperia Neo has same design. Nothing new. N no headphone jack no power button integrated fingerprint scanner. … Sony why r u trying to close ur mob div….

  • Khalid Abdi
  • Probably in 10 years

  • Phone Battles

Disappointing if true. Meh design, fingerprint on the back and no headphone jack. They needed a design leap forward and this is backwards.

  • Ju Rgen

Really like sony, but it this sh*t.. Bleaaaaah disgusting..

  • Alex Norris

Honestly, loop, omnibalance or Y, they are the same under different names
On Y, we see only upper and lower edges are rounded, the rest looks the same and this is not, the all new design, it’s the same old-good omnibalance )

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

betrayed lol, did he just got marry with sony xperia or what?

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

why need 120 Hz? do you guys play video game at 120 Hz?

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

    mLED is the future

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

look on real pictures is better than the concept look

  • Khalid Abdi

Because its much clearer when your looking at the display, plus, as a change to the display, instead of changing the aspect ratio

  • Khalid Abdi

Omnibalance was equal and flat with its sides but not with the loop and same goes with the Y. Besides, if the designs were the same, I wouldn’t care. Why? Because iPhone X is the same design with the iPhone 8 and 7, except for the display and the camera module

  • Geralt

How about removing that rubber-ish back material. The plate part is lovely

  • So0o

I hope the xz2 pro or how it is called… dont have this ugly and old design… R I P sony

  • Gambi

Seriously hope this a fake or old rejected design

  • deekbee

Definitely not a “move forward”. Sideways and slightly backwards. I really do think the Z5 Compact is a perfectly little design. Heck, I picked up a Z5 and was surprised that I still think the Z5 Compact is the better looking design.

(I’ll have to pick up a premium need the full Z5 range)

  • Alex Norris

But they are both flat, what’s on the display side, and flat on the back side, Is not it… )
Then it turns out that Z2 and Z3, should have different design names due to the fact that the Z2 side faces are flat, and in Z3 they are rounded)

  • Khalid Abdi

So ??? BTW, those were small changes and it was ominbalance design, but when Sony made XZ, they introduced Loop Surface
By what your saying, iPhone never changed its design

  • Alex Norris
  • Khalid Abdi

I understand they are the same but look at the sides, in the Z, the side looks flat and in the Z3, it looks a bit curved. They only made small refinements that’s all but with the loop it changed. Why we say it looks like omnibalance, because when we look at the XZ in the front and in the back its same and every OEMs don’t change that

  • Tann

From a xperia leak forum where some insiders dwell. Dont wish to name it tho, keeping it safe as possible. But I trust one insider there that said this is definitely not a shot of any WMC Xperia, and its more solid info than some random posts here.
So, you ll just have to trust me on that.

  • Alex Norris

Ok I’ll try another .. What will happen if the round angle made sharp … New design ..? Definitely not
And Samsung Galaxy S evolution / Much more difference

  • DBS

We’ll see. But Sony already set a bad precedent with the CES phones so…

(And the fact that they even prototyped such monstrosity shouldn’t leave anyone at ease…we’ll see).

  • Khalid Abdi

In the Z3, it looks curved and rounded corner and in the Y, it has a flat corner but look in the bottom, where the usb port sitting, do you see the metal sliver strip? plus when you compare both phone’s bottoms are different like in the Z3 it looks at one level and in the Y concept it looks not balanced.

Now, Samsung have changed the design, but before the S6, the S series looked the same

  • Khalid Abdi

Ok but can you give me the link

  • Khalid Abdi

And thanks, you made my worry go away :)

  • iia3ezu

The phone looks fat/thicc, probably a thickness of around 9.5mm.

Some may dislike it due to it not being slim, others may like it because there’s more space for a bigger battery.

  • usersparadise

It will be thinner, for sure. And maybe your contacts want to fool you / us? Also I´m more interested in its camera. User “Grisha” wrote here that it will be the same of XZ1c. Sorry, but I can´t believe that. Sony itself also stated to bring up dual cameras.

  • iia3ezu

Indeed, it looks disappointing. Expected the ‘Xperia Arc’ design refresh.

But it’s a prototype. We’ll see what happens in the official release.

I’m also excited to see what the Nokia Android phones of 2018 will be. Last year’s offerings from Nokia were quite decent and value for money.

  • Harry Drake

The fingerprint sensor is definitely moving to the back. They’ve already done it for the XA2 series. The side-mounted placement loses its selling point in the US where it’s disabled.

  • Harry Drake

Don’t let that be the real thing. It looks like a cheap Motorola phone.

  • Alex Norris

And look at Z and Z3 +. You will find a lot more differences than between Z3+ and Y. So what? Can you call it brand new design conception? )
It’s all from the same design, called Omnibalance. Only Sony could not come up with another design and it had no choice but to change the design names )
PS. And that, can be called the new design

  • Okarin Titor

Maybe a same phone. But that’s black version.

  • Khalid Abdi

The difference where in the Z line not in the XZ line
Sony had designs and these designs appeared when Sony got hacked so it was designs they were studying, eventually they’re new.
And this plate+human design is new. BTW the renders we’re looking at are first renders of the design, but now, they’ll make it with refinements and style that will match phones from the 2018

  • Steve

they’ve lost also the design..but, maybe, in a thinner version (compact versions are always thick) it will look good

  • Alex Norris

Will see, but i can’t say that this new conception in life looks beautiful and exquisite..
It is a pity that it’s not so harmonious looks like it concept
    Looks like an eggplant )

  • And the algorithms are always improved

  • Jacen23

Did they fired their designers? WTF is this!

Thate line on the side smells like an iphone mockup. I can’t believe that’s an Xperia design. ._.

  • Tochi Nwodu

    Hoping this not true
It looks super ugly on a table

  • Alvin

Did you mean XA2 series and L2 are bad?

  • DBS

Definitely. Putting the fingerprint reader on the back instead of the side – where it belongs if it’s not on the front (or under the display) – is a massive massive mistake.

Now, IF Sony only does this for the cheaper models because it is cheaper to put it on the back than on the side…ok, fine. BUT on that prototype the fingerprint isn’t there. Which means it’s on the back. Which means it’s bad.

  • Ates

me too, I bought it a couple of days ago :)

  • Tann

But, keep a grain of salt here, although that fella is consistant in not posting fake info and claims to have seen the real deal, I am not 100 percent certain his “guarantee this is not new Xperia Compact flag ” is granted.

  • RockStar2005

Yeah I’m not keen on it either, but I’d like to see more (and official lol) pics b4 I make a final judgement.

Yeah Y was SICK!! I WISH they would do Y!

Umm, I don’t like that gossip. Sony needs to UP their battery life not lower it. lol If the XA “mid-ranger” series can get 3200+ mAh batteries, then the flagships should get AT LEAST 3300 or higher. The 845 should give these phones a big boost in battery life as well of course.

  • Eshrak Kader

that so called plate + human design so unique I wish they trimmed the bezels ever so slightly…… people these days only care about bezels… :3
I just hope that the final design will look stunning compared to the prototype one.

  • Khalid Abdi

I agree with you but at the end of the day its a concept besides its the compact one not the main flagship like the XZ2 and the XZ PRO

  • Khalid Abdi

OK :) but give us the link :)) Because you made me excited

  • I would hold my decision until the actual phone.

  • Maroun El-Chayeb

oh thank you for that information, that is good to know, as you wrote this is a big relief, now i can sleep better ;)

  • Bezels = Instant failure.

  • azzido

Hopefully not, the back looks UGLY!
They totally misunderstood the Arc design, it should be curved OTHER WAY ROUND!!!

Fiat myltipla is coming to smartphone world. Fingers crossed this will not impact bigger Z2 and especially next Premium!

    :( :( :(

Where are the old designers I ask???
Current, japanese ones does not have any taste.

Sorry sony, if you will treat me with sonething like this you will not see my money. Sadly, as I want to buy new device this year.

  • azzido

No, nothing special in this design, and looks too similar to current one.

  • azzido

This looks more like crappy galacy S3 design. No acceptance for egg designs!
This faggy egg shaped back looks HORRIBLE! Nightmare is coming, they can try to hide it with the renders, but still not buying this!

  • azzido

Yes, this render looks like cheap chinese crap, if it will cone with finger print on the back it is another no go.

OMG I did not want to say this but this year I may really say goodbye to sony :(

  • Manuel Picos Otero

I do not like it, it seems like a cheap xiaomi.

  • Manuel Picos Otero

    but without the black frames.

  • azzido

Hopefully bro, I really hope and pray you are right. It looks like another sales candidate of initial X midranger. Seems they want to kill compacts. Noone will buy this shit. They would better get back to original Z series.

Now they are messing with naming convention again. It was premium, will be pro or pro-a. Pro is so stupid name, why the hell they make so much mess in the naming? They should differentiate midrangers from top and low ends… And finally stick or get back to good names…

For unknown reason they continue to confuse the consumers more and more…

Designer of the render should be fired immediarely. I would start from this.

No headphone jack, crappy fingerprint sensor on the back and egg design? Hell NO!

  • azzido

True, if render is true this will be another flop, at least in terms of design. RIP sony mobile… But hey, if sony wants us to switch to other brands what should we pick this year? What brand do you recommend nowadays? Note I only buy flagship models. Consider design, camera, screen, battery life, software updates and customer / warranty service.

  • azzido

    Well deserved :)
Good name to call it monstrosity egg :)

  • azzido

Good point! Nokia is not superb but definitely better than monstrosity egg.

  • azzido

Yes, will look at thie egg to think “this is sony” and avoid it.

You are right, this will help many regular customers not to buy sony phones by mistake anymore.

  • CG

Hopefully the photo posted by Grisha is not too representative of the final XZ2 compact.
… But anyways, just in case it is, here is a little 3D model I’ve done based on the photo, with dimensions extrapolated from the Z5 compact on the photo.

    Now that’s a pregnant phone !

  • it seems “pregnant” because you add that sort like of big battery, What happen is that the “belly” is conected with all the back of the device. Is not an adition. You need to base on the prototip and not the concept

  • DBS

Honestly I’ve been in a bit of a conundrum. I have yet to see a single phone worthy of replacing the S7 I’m still using. It’s not that I haven’t bought other phones (XZ1C, Nokia 8 etc) but I just can’t switch. I hate big phones so I’m immediately very limited in my choice.

Now…obviously my S7 is already dragging (and I don’t want to reset it TBH) and battery is lasting very little.
    – I was hopeful LG had got things right and the G7 would be a smaller V30. But that’s been cancelled.
    – I still don’t know what the Hell is going on with the Nokia 9.
    – The S9 is just an S8S and doesn’t fix the S8 problems for me (size and fingerprint placement).
So if you ask me, unless something actually good shows up at MWC, I’m seriously considering buying a new S7 (even though it’s an old processor etc etc).

I’ve been so annoyed by how crappy phones where in 2017 that I even got a bloody iPhone SE to try to switch (needless to say, my hate for iOS just grew bigger and I just couldn’t do it).

If Sony were to give me a XZ3C with an AMOLED screen, wireless charging and RAW support…I’d be settled. I wouldn’t need them to add anything else. They could even release it with the 835 instead of the 845, I wouldn’t care. But that’s not gonna happen…

  • Khalid Abdi

True with bezel less and would be stunning

  • Khalid Abdi

So what? Even iPhone X looks similar to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

  • ymytbb .

  • Ederson Baumbach .*.

I even liked it. Except for the Sony symbol on the bottom, and the power button without fingerprint.

  • Khalid Abdi

Tann commented if you look up that this isn’t the the XZ2 compact and other person commented on GSMArena that this isn’t the XZ2 compact
So rest assure that it will be something stunning

  • Khalid Abdi

Your right about the naming bro but till we don’t what it will called so lets wait and see and ohh boy just a few days :)

  • azzido

Man, with this egg I would end the story of so many years with sony brand. This would be too much.

It would be even hard to believe that corpo than can bring so many best design award tech gadgets produce such multipla…

  • azzido

Overall “place – human” looks like a nice nail to sony mobile coffin.

    Solid coffin.

  • Khalid Abdi

Lol even if it is I would still buy it. Why?? Because I know for sure Sony is better than all of them by the technology that is inside the phone

  • Khalid Abdi

It doesn’t really need bro because Tann commented here and other person commented in GSMArena that this is not the XZ2 compact

  • azzido

    Dear sony mobile.
If you read this please consider below:

    Arc design != monstrosity egg

Can someone please paste xperia Arc picture here? Seems sony forgot how it looked and messed up completely. They need to go back to design school. Hopefully european one.

  • Zactu

Sony Compact XZ1 is the best design. All they had to do is market this phone and sell it in more than a few countries. I hope this is not the new design. And its even bigger now.

  • azzido

I will dop sony brand if this “thing” is real

  • azzido

Haha this actually made me laugh :)

  • CG

Sure there was some approximation, but the belly was actually connected to body also in the 3D model with just a small separation line similar to the pic:

  • CG

Yes and thanks for your mention of the GSMArena comment.
This 3D model was started before seeing these comments, so I posted it anyways for the curious.
… So good that this is not the real XZ2 compact !

  • Khalid Abdi

    Your welcome :))))

  • vardarac

The X Compact has served me extraordinarily well, its only flaw being the lack of WiFi calling support for T-Mobile.

  • Alessio Torres

Nobody wants an ugly phone well that’s not true most people don’t.
If this is the actual design then I’m skipping this round I honestly don’t think these are real never seen anything this ugly from Sony before.

  • Alessio Torres

    I would buy it.

  • Rene Boncales

In my own opinion this is an ugly design.

  • Ren Jie

it’s complete unfactual and untrue. Nokia did not resurrecct themselves, the Nokia now is just merely a brand name and no similar to the past, although some executives are still in the company. HMD Global is currently the licensing the brand name of Nokia, manufactured in Foxconn facilities. I would indeed have gotten Nokia if it was readily available but no.

The issue regarding FP, while its desirable to have a side FP, theres 2 issues:
    1. Right handed people cant unlock the phone easily
    2. Screen cannot be edge to edge bezeless

So its a tradeoff between ergonomics and design beauty, who knows it might be something to do with the patent in US that didnt allow sony to enable side FP in US?

While rumours are speculations, its just for us to see and take it with a grain of salt, There was a design change filed and who knows they might be adding it back? Only time will tell, 26 Feb

  • Ren Jie

@disqus_PjtH43gWnI:disqus in Design, evolution is favoured more than just restarting the design. If that drastic of a change is seen in the Samsung S series, ask yourself, is the micro design features, the detail, thought there? Hold an S8 and XZ series phone for more than 30 minutes, you will know the difference.

Plainly criticising on how a design does not evolve enough for the sake of complaining simply doesn’t work, if you have never been a designer or a design student, it would seem simple that ideas will pop out of nowhere, Sony has been one of the brands at the forefront of phone designs, many mainstream reviewers criticise due to the lack of change, but in this mobile era where people constantly use their phones for hours on end, specs is one, design and comfort is another.

While specs can be easily be surpassed by all the big competitors, have you asked yourself, why Sony’s cautious design and reduction in sales volumes ensured that they stay in a profit, which is important for them to stay in the market if they want to evolve into the future of mobile, VS LG that is making great phones like the G6, V30, but bleeding 10 million a year from making phones?

Everything is not as simple as talking on paper, if it is, anybody could be a smartphone designer

  • Aiden Pearce

According to article on Gsmarena, they seem to confirm from leaks that indeed it lacks 3.5mm headphones jack. And the phone is pricey, sorry Sony i m bailing out on you if thats true. Z5 being my last ever Sony.

  • Muthu kumar

i was drooling for this even though i own XZ Premium

  • Ju Rgen

    Bleaahhh this design is disgusting…

  • guv

Same goes for me and my beautiful Z5C :( Sony has just forcefully pushed us to other brands. Shame…

  • Deal_with__it_2.0

Pity my z5 compact just under two years old is on it’s way out, constant bugs, freezing overheating constantly, slow, laggy and everything about Sony is dying. My battery is almost done. They were the best back in the day. But now they are as useful as Malema.

  • adibuyono

Agreed.. Sad to learn that.. Sony just kill the Xperia..
Anyway, are you the real youtuber of “phone battles”?

  • AllanKafka

I have had a Z5 since feb 2016. At the moment it’s in need of a factory reset for battery life, but it still works smoothly! I have a ton of apps installed, both the internal memory and the microSD card are almost full and I have several background services running, such as file syncing apps. I disabled the facebook app and never installed messenger.

I am not experiencing any bugs or freezes, except with the latest versions of the Firefox browser, which prompted me to temporarily switch to Opera. I think your Z5C can still be a good performer if you try to start from scratch and then re-add just what you need.

  • AllanKafka

They can’t be fscking up so bad. They can’t.

    There must be something wrong.

  • guv

My Z5C gets a SOT of ~3hrs, and I have been using it since Oct ’15 (the release date). I’m going to get the battery replaced and do a factory reset on it, and it’d be good for at least another 1.5yrs ;)

  • azzido

Still, I can’t stand with such ugly design!!! Will never ever buy something like this no matter the brand or internals…

Design wise it’s complete flop and NO GO for me. Got it?

  • Khalid Abdi

Yeah that’s Concept Creator. I know him personally

  • rajat

Just being optimistic… Can we say these images are of a mid ranger getting launched by Sony. :D

  • Svnjay

    That looks ugly.

  • dapaintrain

I seriously hope that this is fake. This design is hideous.
Reminds me of some early smartphones from 2008 cheap Chinese knock off garbage phones.
If this is the next design I’ll be holding onto my xz premium for a long time to come.

I’d love a more modern refined look like most vendors are building now curved screens etc but this isn’t it

  • Marco

This design is like anyother cellphone…one thing I like in Sony was the different design, and Sony is loosing that. The lack of the headphone plug and the back fingerprint sensor is also bad decisions in Sony design.

  • The One

Is it strange that Sony is announcing a compact successor just 6 months after the last one was released?

  • guest

The fingerprint must at the right side, same for volume control, togehter woth the battery life, both buttons where one of the major reasons that I swapped back from LG to Sony.
If the pictures above are correct, we also might face a “fat” phone.
Compared to the new S9… Sony stays behind in design & Iphone lacks in technology.
This would be a bad revolution. It is great that LDAC is also in all androids… but Sony?!
Come on… if this will be announced… I start doubting. But lets wait until I have it at hand.

  • Khalid Abdi

Why your rushing and making judgements. There is a surprise so lets wait and see today after 30 min we will see
