Some news from the wider world of Android this morning. It looks like we will officially see the first news about the next major release of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Tuesday October 11th 2011. This follows the Android Developers YouTube channel sticking up a placeholder page for the live event with the name “Android ICS Launch”. The page has since been taken down, but we’ve attached a screencap below.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to be the first major release that will marry both the smartphone and tablet operating systems into one. Google has managed to keep a tight lid on upcoming features so we’ll be keeping a keen eye on the event. There’s still no certainty on whether 2011 Xperia owners will get Android ICS, but much of that will depend on if there are any minimum hardware specs to run the new OS. Update: Sounds like the launch has been postponed. Here’s the statement: “Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.” Not sure what the issue is, but we guess it is out of respect to Steve Jobs, who passed away earlier this week.
The actual event is called Samsung Unpacked, because it is where the next Nexus smartphone is expected to be announced and will be built by Samsung (much like the Nexus S). See the teaser video below for those that are interested.
