SGP412JPSony Japan has announced a Wi-Fi only version of the Xperia Z Ultra (SGP412), as expected. This version is the same as the existing model, barring any cellular support and comes with 32GB internal storage (versus 16GB in the cellular model). The Xperia Z Ultra SGP412 will cost 51,800 Yen (£299, €366, $496) when it launches on 24 January 2014. The mini tablet will launch in black, white and purple colours.

A number of official accessories will also be available for the tablet including a DK33 magnetic charging dock for 2,700 Yen, the CP12 power cover for 20,000 Yen and the ES22 stylus for 1,980 Yen. There will also be a Sony DCS-XZUPL01 leather case available in black and white/grey for 3,480 Yen.

We’re not entirely sure why Sony has a new dock for the Xperia Z Ultra SGP412, especially since the dimensions (179 x 92 x 6.5 mm) and weight (212g) are the same as the existing model (C68XX). The global Xperia Z Ultra (C68XX) has the DK30 magnetic charging dock. Update: Sony Japan seems to release its own magnetic chargers for the same handsets, for example the DK34 magnetic charging dock is for the Xperia Z1 (SO-01F).

At this stage, the Xperia Z Ultra Wi-Fi Edition has only been announced for Japan, but there is a chance it could be announced internationally at the MWC tradeshow next month.

The Xperia Z Ultra Wi-Fi Edition has a 6.4-inch 1080p display, Qualcomm APQ8074 chipset with 2.2GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and micro SD memory card support, 8MP rear camera sensor, 2.2MP front camera sensor and IP55/IP58 certification for dust and water resistance.
