Sony Japan has announced the Xperia A2 (SO-04F) this morning for NTT DoCoMo. The handset which we previously dubbed the ‘Xperia Z1 Compact refresh‘ or ‘Xperia Z2 Compact‘ is nothing of the sort. The Xperia A2 looks almost identical to the Xperia Z1 Compact, but comes in new colours such as Lavender and Orange, as well as Grey Black and White.
The Xperia A2 shares many of the same specifications as the Xperia Z1 Compact (or Xperia Z1 f as it is known in Japan), so we suspect Sony has launched the handset as a much cheaper option to the Xperia Z2 (SO-03F) that was also announced this morning for DoCoMo.
The Xperia A2 comes with a matte plastic back as opposed to the glass back in the Xperia Z1 f. The handset will come equipped with a 4.3-inch 720p display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974 chipset with 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 graphics.
It will also feature 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD memory card support, IP55/IP58 certification for dust and water resistance, a 20.7MP Exmor RS camera, a 2.2MP Exmor R front camera and a 2300mAh battery.
The Xperia A2 has dimensions of 65 × 128 × 9.7 mm and weighing 138g, placing it almost identically to the Xperia Z1 Compact. Pre-orders for the Xperia A2 open today, with the phone expected to launch in the middle of June 2014.
Thanks Ben and Jag!
