in Rumours, Xperia M2

Xperia_M2_160x270Sony Mobile is planning to release a water resistant variant of the Xperia M2 judging by its own website. The marketing name “Xperia M2 Aqua” has been outed via this XML address from the SonyMobile.com domain. It points to two variants: the D2403 (global model) and D2406 (North America; possibly on T-Mobile).

The Xperia M2 has model number D230X, whilst the Xperia M2 Aqua’s model number is D240X. Given the adjacency in model numbers, the above would tie in with these being sibling phones.

If you’re wondering what the Xperia M2 Aqua looks like, we don’t expect any departure from the Xperia M2 design. The image assets pointed to in the XML file are the same as the Xperia M2 – this could be because Sony hasn’t updated them yet, or because they indeed look very similar.

However, when the Sony D2403 was leaked in a benchmark recently the specs were somewhat different to the current Xperia M2. The benchmark pointed to a 4.4-inch qHD (540 x 960) display and 16GB internal storage. This compares to the 4.8-inch qHD display and 8GB storage of the Xperia M2. So maybe there will be a physical difference (assuming the leaked benchmark is correct).

Other specs were the same though, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8926 chipset (1.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 305 graphics), 1GB RAM, 8MP rear camera and VGA front-facing camera.

Both variants of the Xperia M2 Aqua passed through the FCC recently, with the Sony D2403 sporting FCC ID PM-0770-BV and the Sony D2406 model sporting FCC ID PM-0771-BV. According to the FCC documents, the Xperia M2 Aqua has very similar dimensions to the Xperia M2 (139.65 x 71.14 x 8.64 mm). This would signify that the leaked benchmarks are not correct. Below is an image from the Xperia M2 Aqua FCC docs showing alleged dimensions.

The fact that the Xperia M2 Aqua has passed through the FCC means we could be seeing these phones very soon, or maybe Sony will hold it back for an IFA release in early September 2014.
