The Sony Xperia Z3 series includes a number of new software features, over and above those found in the current Xperia Z2 flagship. Sony has detailed what these are as well as releasing a short video covering a few of them. There are some nice inclusions such as the ability to pause video whilst recording and smart screen rotation. Check out the full list below.
New software features in the Xperia Z3 series
Pause when recording video
This is a really neat function. You are now able to pause whilst capturing video, when you resume and have finished shooting, all of the clips are stored under one file. It’s hard to believe why such a useful feature hasn’t been implemented before.
Ultra STAMINA mode
Sony has already spoken about new optimisations in the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact that enable a 2 day battery life. A new feature called Ultra STAMINA Mode can make the phone last nearly a week according to Sony. Ultra STAMINA Mode limits a number of phone functions, although we don’t know how much is switched off at this time.
Unlock the phone automatically with any Sony Bluetooth accessory
The Sony Xperia Z3 series can now be automatically unlocked when any Sony Bluetooth accessory/headset is in close proximity. This is activated in Settings > Security > Screen lock > Bluetooth unlock.
Record your on-screen activity
The screenshot capture has been around for a while, but now Sony has enabled you to actually record video of what you are doing on-screen. This is enabled by long pressing the power button and selecting “Record Screen”.

Smart screen rotation
So you’re browsing the web on your phone and decide to lie down on the sofa and due to the angle of the phone, the screen orientation changes. We’ve all been there and can be incredible frustrating. Sony’s new “Smart screen rotation” feature prevents this kind of unwanted rotation.
Edit Quick Settings faster
“Quick Settings” in the drop-down menu can now be edited quicker, allowing you to drag and drop the settings you want directly into the tray. You can also long press each setting to load into the full Settings app.
Optimise audio settings for Sony headphones
The sound settings in the Xperia Z3 series allow you to specifically select the Sony headphone you are using, including optimised sound for that device. This can be found in Settings > Sound > Audio Settings > Headphones.
New Update Center app
Gestures including tap to wake display
Okay these are not new, the Xperia Z2 already features these gestures, but we’ve had many people ask whether they have carried over to the Xperia Z3 series. The answer is yes, the Xperia Z3 series includes the following:
– Double-tap to wake screen
– Smart call handling (bring phone to ear to answer; turn phone on face to silent incoming call)
– Smart backlight control (screen remains on when you are looking at a photo without touching the screen)
