We do feel for our friends in the US who look to buy Sony Xperia phones. All of the Xperia phones sold through carriers (and there aren’t many) will come with a locked bootloader and therefore the probability of getting the handsets rooted are low. Success is also hampered given that Sony’s market share in North America remains low.
Well against the odds, we are very happy to report that XDA user zxz0O0 leveraged a new exploit (CVE-2014-7953) to achieve root for the T-Mobile Xperia Z3 (D6616) and Verizon Xperia Z3v (D6708).
Installation involves running the exploit.bat file in the package found here. For Verizon Xperia Z3v users you will need to make sure that you are on the original shipping firmware (build number 23.0.E.0.376) for the exploit to work.
