Google has confirmed that Android 8.0 will officially be known as Android Oreo. This is Android’s second branded release, after Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Android Oreo includes a number of improvements including picture-in-picture, Autofill, and improvements to the notification system including notification dots, categories and snoozing.

Google has worked hard on optimising battery life, start-up time, graphics rendering, and stability. There are also 60 new emoji added in Android Oreo if that gets you excited. Another key addition is Project Treble, which makes it easier for manufacturers to push quicker Android updates.

Overall, Android Oreo is shaping up to be an exciting release. Sony has yet to confirm which existing devices will run Android Oreo, but it is a given that Sony’s new devices to launch at IFA 2017 will launch with Oreo out of the box. As soon as we have details on which of Sony’s current crop of Xperia smartphones will get Oreo we’ll let you know.
