The Xperia XZ2 is IP65 and IP68 dust and water resistant, as many flagships from Sony have been in the past. Sony has some pedigree in this area, being one of the first manufacturers to launch water resistant smartphones in the past. Youtuber Matthew Moniz put a number of current flagships to test to see how well they fared being dunked in water.
Moniz tested the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, Huawei P20 Pro, LG G7 ThinQ against the Sony Xperia XZ2. Two of the phones are IP67 rated (iPhone X and Huawei P20 Pro), while the rest of the three are IP68 rated.
He conducted a number of tests, including sticking all of the phones in a jug of water, and then took it to the next level by putting the IP67 rated phones under 1 metre of water, and the IP68 rated phones under 1.5 metres of water.
The results were quite interesting. Two phones ended up completing dying within a couple of hours – the Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. Two other phones had issues with the mic and ear pieces – the Huawei P20 Pro and LG G7 ThinQ.
Only one phone ended up completely unscathed – working perfectly as it did before – and that phone is the Xperia XZ2. So, a great result for Sony, and shows the company’s strength with its build quality once again. Check out the test video and follow-up video below.
