Android Pie rolls to Xperia XA2 family in Russia, but is bricking devices [50.2.A.0.342]

Sony Mobile quietly started to roll out Android Pie to the Xperia XA2 range of devices recently – all of the family were updated, including the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus – moving the build number from 50.1.A.13.123 to 50.2.A.0.342. However, strangely the update only went live in one region (Russia), which is unusual as Sony normally updates a number of key regions at the beginning, before widening the release.

The reason for the limited release may be down to a number of reports where users are experiencing ‘bricked’ devices on the software update. The official Sony Mobile Talk forums has a number of users who have experienced this problem. Users are saying that on installation, the phone reboots and then displays black and white stripes. The smartphone can’t be unlocked and the screen doesn’t respond to touch. Some users are finding success in restoring the phone through Xperia Companion.

Sony may have realised the problem and paused the rollout, hence it only appearing in one region so far. We expect Sony will be releasing a patch, and globally launching the new Android Pie firmware for Xperia XA2 devices in due course.

Have you updated to Android Pie on the Xperia XA2 range? Did you experience any issues? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Android Pie is rolling to the Xperia XA2 family in Russia…

… but you may want to hold off, as some devices are being bricked by the update
