Sony Mobile announced the Xperia 10 (I3113, I3123, I4113, I4193) and Xperia 10 Plus (I3213, I3223, I4213, I4293) earlier in the week at MWC, bringing their 21:9 displays to the mid-range. The Xperia 10 comes with a 6-inch Full HD+ LCD display, while the Xperia 10 Plus comes with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ LCD display. The super-wide aspect ratio, means that both phones will support a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels.
Sony’s new design language highlights minimal bezels around the sides on bottom of the phone, but it does have a much larger top bezel. The use of the wider display allows user to have a more immersive gaming and media experience. Sony also says that the screen is ideal for multi-tasking and running two apps simultaneously.
While both phones look pretty much identical, apart from size, there are a number of differences in the internals of each phone. The Xperia 10 is powered by a, now aging, Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset along with 3GB RAM. The Xperia 10 Plus, on the other hand, is powered by a Snapdragon 636 chipset and 4GB RAM. Both feature 64GB eMMC internal storage and a microSD memory card slot.
This marks the first time Sony has adopted dual rear cameras on its mid-range. While the hardware on both phones is different, they each support 21:9 movie recording, bokeh for portrait photos, 120 frames per second slow motion, 4K video recording, HDR for photos and low-light capabilities with ISO support to 12,800. The Xperia 10 Plus does get something extra, and that is 2x optical zoom (only supported in still photos).
Both devices have slightly different rear sensors, although both phones use the same front-facing selfie camera, featuring an 8MP 1/4.0-inch sensor (1.12μm pixel pitch) with F2.0 wide-angle (84 degrees) lens.
On the rear, the Xperia 10 uses a combination of 13MP and 5MP dual cameras. The 13MP camera uses a 1/3.0-inch sensor (1.12μm pixel pitch) with F2.0 wide-angle (76.4 degrees) lens. The 5MP camera uses a smaller 1/4.0-inch sensor (1.4m pixel pitch) with F2.4 wide-angle (87.9 degrees) lens.
The Xperia 10 Plus uses a combination of 12MP and 8MP dual cameras on the rear. The 12MP camera has a 1/2.8-inch Exmor RS sensor (1.25μm pixel pitch) with F1.75 wide-angle (76.3 degrees) lens. The 8MP camera has a 1/4.0-inch sensor (1.12μm pixel pitch) with F2.4 (44.6 degree) lens.
It is nice to see Sony return to the more angular style of older phones, resembling the OmniBalance design language. The tall skinny form factor might not suit everyone, but they certainly look good. However, the thin profile (c8.3mm) means that Sony hasn’t used big batteries in the phones – the Xperia 10 uses a 2870mah battery, while the Xperia 10 Plus uses a 3000mAh battery.
Side sense is also supported on both phones – the first time it is supported in Sony’s mid-range. Other features include support for high-resolution audio with DSEE HX™ and LDAC – it’s also great to see both mid-rangers continue to support the 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also support for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, FM Radio and USB Type-C (USB 2.0).
The Xperia 10 has dimensions of 156 x 68 x 8.4 mm and weighs 162 grams, while the larger Xperia 10 Plus has dimensions of 167 x 73 x 8.3mm and weighs 180 grams.
The Xperia 10 and 10 Plus phones are available in the same three colours (Navy, Black, Silver), but they each have their own exclusive colour (Pink for the Xperia 10; Gold for the Xperia 10 Plus). Both phones are launching with Android 9 Pie, and are already on sale in certain regions. For example, on the Sony Store Europe, the Xperia 10 is available for £299/€349, while the Xperia 10 Plus is available for £349/€429.
