Xperia arc versus Xperia neo – which should you choose?

Xperia arc versus Xperia NeoSony Ericsson has created a dilemma for many people in the upcoming launches of the Xperia arc and Xperia Neo. Judging by our recent poll, 70 percent of you are looking forward to the Xperia arc versus only 11 percent wanting the Xperia Neo (the balance was split between the Xperia Play and Xperia Pro). However, having gone hands-on with both phones recently, we are beginning to think that many people will be swayed by the Neo once they can see it in the flesh.

Yes, the Xperia Neo is chunkier than the arc, but the anodised metallic look combined with the extra weight gives it a more premium feel. Plus, it also comes with a crucial extra – a front-facing camera. This omission from the Xperia arc even left some of the Sony Ericsson reps we spoke to slightly bemused.

Combine this with the fact that the Xperia Neo is around €100 cheaper than the Xperia arc, yet offers most of the arc’s headline features (1GHz processor, 8.1MP Exmor R camera, HDMI and Bravia Engine) then it seems that the Neo could be a potential best-seller for Sony Ericsson. On the flip side, there is no denying that the Xperia arc is a more beautiful phone. The general trend towards larger displays, also means many people will naturally gravitate to the arc.

So which handset should you choose? There is no doubt in our mind that the Xperia Neo offers the better value for money. You get most of the same features plus the bonus of the front-facing camera (for those that need it). However, comparing the two side-by-side, there is no denying that the arc is more desirable. Whether this and an extra 0.5-inch in display real estate warrants the extra money will come down to your disposable budget.

Similarities

  • 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
  • 8.1MP Exmor R camera sensor
  • Bravia Engine display
  • HDMI support
  • HD video recording (720p)

Xperia arc advantages

  • Larger 4.2-inch screen (Xperia neo has a 3.7-inch screen)
  • Sexier design
  • Thinner and lighter – despite the larger display
  • 512MB ROM (versus 320MB for Xperia neo)

Xperia Neo advantages

  • Front-facing camera (missing on the Xperia arc)
  • Cheaper by around €100 (£80)

  • Gabriel

A twist! I’d probably go with the Neo, cheaper and the front facing camera. Will be needed for skype later on.

  • Ill go for arc!!! Unfortunatly theres no front cam for video call

70% would buy a Sony Ericsson outdated piece of crap again!?? #EPICFAIL!!

  • Nilsepils

I have no money for a new phone but if I had to choose between these two I DEFINATELY would go for the ARC becawze is sexay :D

  • draft_life

Xperia arc isn’t thiner than Medias (N-04C by NEC)
Width of Medias is 7.7mm! it will launched on March in Japan.

  • mmooah

how is outdated u nob its running the latest os, hating on se bet your seething cause u cant stop them haha

  • Nicolai

    Snapdragon? In age of dualcores?

    Fail

  • Adam

    Not sure…

I might go for the Neo because of price, but it might feel like a step down. I have an X10 at the moment, and if I sell that and buy a new phone, then sell that phone again in a year when my contract runs out, the Neo will probably only cost me £100 and the Arc £200.

The real question for me is do I go even higher and get the Play

  • Marcuswvr

Buy SE phones? Never again after that xperia x10 will not upgrade . Notes x10 is better some news phones! SINTÉTICAS IS NOT TRUSTFULL!

  • Going for neo.
    coz:
    1. front camera for skype (why the hell they did not give one for arc is big question)
    2. value for money
and i will miss only one thing: size of screen. they should have atleast kept it as much as xperia x10.

ppl, xperia x10 was SE’s first dive in android ocean. and it is true that 2.1 is good. specially after they have supported dual touch. They have been honest people to stand up and apologize for their mistake. unlike many firms who give false hope.

  • Njfpolyr6

none! not that I dun like it, it is because UMTS is missing 1700 bandwidth….

  • zodiac

outdated with respect to hardware… galaxy s 2 has dual core with 1gb of ram. sorry but single core was 2010…to do that in a supposed high end device for 2011 is just the same crap all over again from sony.

  • Miguel

Uhmm, ehmmmm, Samsung Galaxy S II…

  • possibly will buy both….
i still need a good device with keyboard for my Business and one with big screen for private…. if the keyboard is good enough if neo pro and there is no good WP7 device with size of Neo and keyboad then i will buy also the Neo as second device

  • Anonymous

Why are you even here then?

Answer : to waste peoples time because you have no life.

    Good for you kid :D

  • Anonymous

I’ll go with the Neo because it makes more sense and it’s better priced.

I still don’t get why would S/E would risk their flagship (Arc) sales by selling very similar devices in features ( neo + pro) but I guess they are really depending on it’s design and the bigger screen.

However, the good news is that S/E didn’t cut some features in the mid end devices in order to make the Arc more shiny which in the end is a big advantage for us the users.

And who knows maybe the Arc will get extra goodies when it’s updated to make it even more unique than the others. I just believe that Arc users deserve some extra stuff since they will be paying extra cash!

Great devices from S/E this year, good Job and keep it up!

  • Anonymous

Sorry pal but not all people think the way you do, so I hope you accept reality :)

Not all of us want a dual core phone to brag about and scream about benchmarks that most of the users don’t give a damn about it’s numbers.

Many users including my self, want’s a phone that’s reliable, works well, has the latest os and looks stylish. Besides, google announced that android 2.2 & 2.3 will not benefit from dual cores since the os still only supports single cores. So this is an extra reason to not be fooled just because of the name.

Keep in mind that the iphone is still #1 in smartphones sales and it doesn’t have shiny features like other phones nowadays. The reason is simple because most people care about the experience! So unless you have something useful to say in this blog please save it. The question was very direct in stating what do you prefer the Arc or the neo right? There was nothing to do with dual cores vs single cores.

    Period!

  • Wow…. at least there are still people with enough intelligence to realize the real life :D *thumbs up*

  • Blibliblabla

yeah, and you’re REAL adult. at least that guy had *some* info to contribute to discussion. what did you bring except hostility?

  • Anonymous

Info to contribute to discussion? Is this a joke or what.

Bringing something that has nothing to do with the topic and ending it by fail is contributing? Look pal I don’t know what your up too, but trolls are not welcome because all they do is flame the place with useless comments, so if your not of them the least you can do is stop defending them.

And if you think I only brought hostility, than you should read my detailed comment that is 100% related to the topic. I’m fed up with all the haters and trolls who has no life other than irritate other users.

It’s a bad habit, and reveals an immature and insecure personality. Those people are banned in other forums you know why ? Because those forums are more professional ( XDA – Engadget). So, in less professional forums we must suffer by those ignorant users, it’s sick and it’s a big waste of time and energy. Specially for users who truly want to benefit of this blog and it’s exclusive news.

  • zak

The Arc is nice but Samsung galaxy 2
    Dual core processor,
    1080p video recording,

  • Anonymous

Thanks bro I appreciate your compliment :)

I also noticed that less intelligent users follow specs blindly, regardless if the specs are useful or not. On the other hand, smarter users find what benefits them and will also meet their demands and needs.

So I guess we can’t do anything about it man, some people just refuse to think and use their brain, they just follow what ever the media wants them too! Which unfortunately most of the time may be deceiving.

  • recursive

In case you missed the headline it reads “Xperia arc versus Xperia neo”. No one cares for a phone that is only available in Japan.

  • recursive

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ll bet these trolls couldn’t even afford these phones, let alone dual-core ones.

As for the dual core argument, reasons not to go with a dual core (at least not now) is an insanely expensive price tag, and I’ll bet reduced battery life (the OS isn’t optimized to take advantage of the two cores, so the processor is going to drain more power for doing less). Any RAM over 512MB is only useful if you play games, because of how Android manages your apps’ state.

  • I will get ARC. I do have Xperia X10a right now and if I can get ARC(a) to work on ATT then I am set.

Front-facing camera is not a new technology and I don’t use it, its all marketing and + for people who do really use it.
They both have HDMI, I don’t have any use for it yet. X10 is good enough but problem is that doesn’t come with updated OS (which is SE problem) but they are running a business too.

Hope to see some reasonable prices here in NA and I will get it.

    Bigger screen
Slimmer design and better design that neo. Neo is not even as good as X10 at least in design.

  • Mjwallace1

i dont remember it saying or samsung galaxy 2, iphone wana be phone lol

  • Legendheart

xperia neo looks like shit..though haves front camera…

  • keyboard warriors

lmao oh i see so i guess because the xperia play is the best gaming phone now all other phones are useless, get a grib, go play with your samsung or your x10

  • Legendheart

after 3 months when phones is releasesd, Neo380 rom cant be upgraded to further Os, but thet say SE is working on Arc since it has 512 rom ram, EOL Neo..arc survives a little longer

  • Smith

    Your a hypocrite.

To follow your own arguement from earlier, how does this post relate to the original topic, the pot calling the kettle black.

I would choose the Arc, I like the larger screen and slimmer design. Neo seems reasonable alternative for the price.

  • Micheal Archer

70% of those who responded that they would buy one of the new SE Xperia phones said they would buy the arc. This definitely doesn’t say that 70% of current X10 users would buy the arc. It doesn’t say that 70% of the general population would buy the arc. It only says that 70% of those who responded to the poll about which new Xperia handset they would buy said they would get the arc instead of the Neo, Play, or Pro.

  • Gregorian

I can see that in a years time, the Arc will be on a $79 a month plan, while the Neo will be on a $49 a month plan and…. I will just have to vote with my wallet, no matter which one is prettier.

And lack of front camera is annoying.

  • DarK

    ARC !!!! ONLY ARC!

  • Joe

The arc in Japan has 1GB ROM, doesn’t it?

You know what? I loved this article, but there are SO many confused costumers out there that probably alot of people would love if you made a similar article about ALL the 4 upcoming phoes. Similarities, pros, cons etc :)

  • Akalban

    none of them thank you

  • why 512? phones today are at the 1GB…

Who actually video calls anyway? the only way i see video calling being of benefit is to the deaf if they sign.

Out of the two i would have to choose the Arc, but as people have been saying it does not have dual core, now i know that Android OS currently isnt optimised for dual core but im sure in the future it will be.

I currently have an X10 on Orange in the UK, it is great value and does everything my friends Desire HD and Galaxy S do, the massive benefit to both of these is how customisable the Android Software is,if you Replace the Home booter then its like having a completely new phone :).

  • Bey..

Hey Listen zodiac at least Sony cares about their customers (price, firmware as scheduled ,etc)
Samsung is crap for always delaying their firmwares, and taking about the Galaxy S2 €738 really!!!!!! look i can bloody buy a core i5 laptop for that amount

I went for the Neo – sound quality is important to me, and the Neo’s speaker is better than the Arc’s, which is as tinny as the one on my Desire.

BTW, the post is wrong: The Arc and the Neo have identical memory. Check the SE website. I’d post a link, but I’m lazy.

  •  arc. already have

As a current owner of an X10 (that has needed expensive repairs) I am looking to get another phone. I was happy with the X10 (unhappy about the 1.6 => 2.x migration path I had to take) but overall quite satisfied with the phone. I am considering another Xperia: this time I am looking at the PRO. I want the front facing camera for video chat. I liked the keyboard on my old HTC Tytn & Tytn II. And now Sony has opened up the bootloader for ROM customization. I was really thinking of the ARC, but the front facing camera and the keyboard were selling points. My only issue is that I am on an ATT contract and no one knows who will be getting the phone. If it goes to T-Mobile, will I be able to use it on ATT (same frequencies??) If it goes to Verizon I may be out of luck as they are on different frequencies IIRC.

  • Fromsarawithlove_tp

Why can’t I sending message with Neo ? How can I do? having something wrong with my phone…:((

  • kira

    there is something wrong !
as gsmarena says , neo is more expensive than arc  ( 20 uro )

  • Arc!

  • Xdlolxd

    Xperia neo have 512mb ROM…

  • sara

i am still struggling, i want to buy the arc, but its to expensive, so i chose the neo, now i see that the neo is smaller than the x10, whats more important anyway? RAM? Screensize?
If i went for the RAM i would take the NEO (as it has 2.3 and 512RAM), screensize i would take the arc, and price i would choose the x10…but i am afraid of buying a neo having a fat phone, with a small display, making it look cheap and girlish…
buying an arc might be the better alternative here..but 460 euros is not really reasonable for an outdated phone that has nothing more than the x10 (expect bravia and 0.2inch more)
i hope i will make up my mind..
    can u guys help me?

  • Alana

    grand means thousand.

  • it’s even stupid to compare Samsung Galaxy S II with those two models… the were released before it, and ofc Samsung made better one. Wait for Xperia Grip! it will rape Galaxy S II

  • Indycar

got the neo and its just fine

its fast, responive and battery lasts quite long for SP
only thing missin for some games is the physical keyboard but thats just me :P

  • Utkarsh

HEY U should UpDate this page..
Arc and neo has same ROM ie 380 MB
    http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/03/23/xperia-arc-gets-380mb-rom-%E2%80%93-confirmed/

  • Goldenlagoon

I don’t know where do you get that RAM for NEO 320MB??? To my knowledge it’s 512MB and to what i see in different company offers. Arc looks great, but you need an extra hand to operate with, while Neo is cool and supports Skype also.

  • blip

Yes they have the same camera, but the lense on the arc is bigger, it just gives it more light. Altogether i think the picture quality is alot better on the arc. and well, on screen keyboard just isn’t praktical without a screen a least the size of the arc.

  • Ronzalpha

well, now that the Arc S is coming out soon…

    Arc S > Neo in hardware anytime (1.5 Ghz processor > 1Ghz)
(not to mention the new paranorma technology)

  • Krytos

It says ROM, not RAM… BIG difference

  • Antony_chandler

@ZAK we ARE not talking about the samsung here,im afraid your in the WRONG conversation!!……

  • Antony_chandler

@sarah FAT??what!!ive just bought the NEO and it’s far from fat!!!…Nicest phone ive ever owned so far!…and its 512 not 320!!!….apart from slightly bigger screen(need both hands)the phones are IDENTICAL!! oh and the NEO has two cams….personaly cant see why they are both not priced the SAME!!?..THINK I DEFO MADE THE right CHOICE THIS YEAR!….

  • Thelegend6657

For single core android phones, NOW . I would get a HTC Ryhme

  • Medvjeda

Do you now the diffrence betwen ROM and RAM?
