There has been much rumour over whether or not Sony Ericsson is planning to embrace Windows Phone 7 (WP7) in their smartphone strategy. The company has thus far been focused on its Xperia line-up of Android phones, but judging by the latest leak, it looks like we may be seeing their first WP7 handset pretty soon.
The unidentified handset is shown running Windows Phone 7, including the three requisite WP7 buttons on the front screen. This particular version also has a slide out QWERTY keyboard. There’s not much else we can tell from the grainy picture, although we couldn’t see any ‘Xperia’ branding on the phone.
Now we‘ve got no idea if this WP7 handset will ever make it to the market. It may have just been an early prototype that was built whilst SE was assessing the WP7 platform. We also can’t confirm the authenticity of the photo. It’s intriguing nonetheless and one wouldn’t rule out a WP7 Sony Ericsson handset in the future.
Update: We’ve added two more photos that we’ve unearthed.
Update 2: According to Eldar Murtazin this is just an “old prototype that was cancelled last year“.
