Something we noticed over the weekend is that the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc does not allow you to use the digital zoom at the higher resolutions when taking a snap. If you try and use the zoom function whilst the camera is set to either 8MP or 6MP resolution, you’ll get a message telling you that you “cannot zoom in at this resolution”. You have to drop down to 2MP if you want to be able to use zoom.
Whilst we would always prefer to use optical zoom over digital zoom, this just isn’t an option in almost all camera phones. Digital zoom can come in handy in certain situations although you will see a sacrifice in image resolution. The strange thing is that this functionality is intact on the Xperia X10. Hopefully SE will fix this software issue in an upcoming firmware release. If you can’t wait until then, use a third-party program like Vignette that is able to zoom at higher resolutions.
