Sony Ericsson forces us to close XperiaBlog.net

Xperia BlogIt is with great sadness that we have to bring you the news that this will be the last post on this website. Sony Ericsson has filed a formal complaint about the use of the trademarked ‘Xperia’ name in our domain name and have requested that the domain names, including that of XperiaX10.net, be transferred to them.

Sony Ericsson is alleging that we have used the domain names in “bad faith”. We are stunned and disappointed that Sony Ericsson, a company that we have spent much of our free personal time in promoting, especially the Xperia brand, has decided to take this formal action against us. After all we are just like you, passionate Sony Ericsson users, who have strived to bring the community breaking news and an independent viewpoint.

We do not have the resources to fight Sony Ericsson on this and therefore this is the last you will hear from us. Sony Ericsson has made great strides in its Xperia portfolio, especially in listening to the community. This makes it all the more confusing as to why Sony Ericsson would want to shut us down. We genuinely believe that 2012 could be a bumper year for the company, we just wish we could have been there along for the ride.

    I bought that piece of shit xperia x10 mini for 150€ because i did a research for the features. When I bought it i realized that piece of shit has no zoom, and has no multitouch. I bought it specificly for emulating games.

    A multitouch or dualtouch IS possible for the x10 mini, but those dickheads confrirmed that this mobile will not have multitouch because it will ruin the “single touch simplicity”. What the fuck does that mean? Are they stupid?
    No, I realized they only need money, thats why they installed multitouch on these shit tons of expensive mobiles who cant be afforded for people with low budget. fuck you SE.

    There was no multitouch on the more expensive X10 either when it launched.

    The main difference was that the X10 got software upgrades but the slower X8 and X10 Mini didn’t

    I’ve been following this blog for close to a year and have always found it very informative and IMPARTIAL, so I’m at a total loss as to why, suddenly, you’re acting in ‘bad faith.’ 

    With all the strides SE have made in communicating with their fanbase, this feels little more than a tactical error on their part and a real kick in balls for you.

    It’s very disappointing indeed. Please come up with another less…inflammatory(?)…name and continue the good work. Please!

    Ask to change the name….It may not be that big issue.I believe there is no harm done to S.E from this site.

    Man you are the most blog I visit just to get S/E news! I’m sure there is something wrong going on. Maybe, some misunderstanding or such thing.

    You really can’t give up now, I won’t allow it! You have done a fantastic job in making me and a lot others be aware of everything related to SE. In fact, I believe that S/E are so lucky to have fans such as your self.

    Man I am serious, there must be a solution. Try to contact them again, try to speak with people in XDA what ever.

    Anyhow, worse case scenario, make a new website and all of us will go there. There are plenty of solutions, don’t give up now.

    I logged on to see if there was any news of the firmware upgrade to the arc in the UK to find this sad news!

    The reason is simple guys, SE has already stopped referring to its products as SonyEricsson phones, they are soon to be called Xperia…by Sony. So “Xperiablog” would be a bit confusing for customers who don’t know your story.

    It is sad they do it that way, but you’ve done a good job, and I’m sure you can find a way together to give your blog a new appealing name.

    Poor move by Sony Ericsson. I’m a Sony Ericsson fan, and I can’t understand why they would want to attack us, their own fans. There’s only one explanation; Sony is taking over Sony Ericsson, and they want to have full control over everything even remotely connected to the name Xperia.

    I just hope this isn’t the last thing that we’ll hear from you, Tej. I’ve been following this blog (and XperiaX10.net) for a long time and I really hope you will continue running the blog. I can definitely understand if you don’t want to continue supporting Sony Ericsson after this very unfortunate move by them though.

    You, like my own site have done nothing but work to promote the Xperia range of phones. Sites like this one promote SE products just as much if not more, than SE themselves. They should be paying you for the promotion work you’ve done and not ripping your heart out (only going on how I would/possibly will feel if they did the same to me). Disgraceful.

    If they really do, it makes it easy for me to get away from SE phones which started over 10 years back. WP7 is looking more and more attractive. It just needs few sexy phones and i am sure Nokia can deliver. If not, I might have to go for Galaxy Nexus even though I hate AMOLED screens over saturated colors.

    I’m disgusted by SE’s attitude. These guys have literally done them an amazing favor and in return, SE came up with ‘bad faith’ shit . Fuck you, SE – stick your xperia trademark up your ass. I’m done with SE (have had w810, w995, x10, x8, arc, play). Instead of wasting time on these kinda craps, SE could rather try to put their shit together and put up some good fight against HTC & shitty samsung.

    Even though I think this sucks, when you set up the site you knew that you were using Sony Ericsson’s trademarked “Xperia” brand in your site name, and you knowingly chose to use the rather generic title “Xperia Blog” as the brand for your site.

    There are risks associated with that, but at the same time your site may have gained traffic by using the Xperia name so prominently in your website title.

    Of course, I would have hoped that Sony Ericsson would have turned a blind eye, or at least given you guys a warning first to better brand the site as “unofficial”, or given some notice to re-brand the site with a completely different name.

    I don’t think there’s any need for you to “fight” Sony Ericsson though.  To be honest, the Xperia brand name is theirs, and you used their brand name as the name of your website.  Anyway, I hope that you can at least try to open up a dialogue with the Sony Ericsson legal team, explain your position and try to find a way forward working with Sony Ericsson.  These guys are not faceless monsters, they are businessmen.  Try talking to them, and if you can’t reach an amicable arrangement then consider either launching a re-branded site, or just closing down.

    Sony Ericsson didn’t really do anything wrong here, even though the result isn’t what any of us readers would have wanted.

    I personally have no love for SE after all I paid for may brand new handset which was out of date in less than 6 months. Apart from selling me the handset the took their sweat time with the upgrade’s which are also out of date and I have to turn to XDA for the latest perks. They are making BILLIONS and could not care less about what their customers have to say. They gave freeexperia a few hand sets and paper work instead of giving the customers the upgrade’s they could easily afford.

    Why don’t you just change the domain name?
    Anyway, your site is certainly a blog, but it also hosts adds, what’s more Xpera IS indeed a trademark and I can understand SE if they ask you to change a domain name that people could think is an official SE blog.
    It would be different if SE asked you to shut down the blog, this would be of course a violation free speech rights, but as far as I can see they did not ask you to close the blog, but only to stop using the xperia name on the domain address, which is, in my opinion, not such a strange request.

    They can not force you to close the site, or can take the domain or forcing you to deliver it. The laws will protect you. No matter what Xperia is a registered trademark, XperiaBlog.net is not. You do not need lawyers, simply, if you do not want to close the site, just contact them indicating that your intentions are not close or give then the domain name, is your and is your page, end of the history.

    We have seen great technical openness, help to the CyanogenMOD team, unlocked bootloaders and quite frequent firmware updates that made me regain faith in Sony Ericsson as a brand that supports smartly the power users (who are ambassadors for the brand to the general public).

    I actually moved from Sony after having an X10; I have stayed in touch with what SE are upto through X10 Blog and Xperiablog as there is always a chance I will go back to Sony in the future.  With the demise of this site goes my last contact with SE and almost certainly that chance.  SE have always been good at shooting themselves in the foot but this is monumental…  well done, I applaud you in your stupidity… and this is a technology company.  Oh dear.

    It’s closed because it mentioned in it’s review of mini pro that it has a manufacturing defect with static noise. Sony wants to sell the defect phones as it can’t be easily recognized by most of the buyers…

The first time I was here, I actually though it was the real thing. A blog from the developers from Sony Ericsson. But more and more i noticed it wasnt so. Its just the thing it can be misstaken for the real site. The only thing this guy that created this awsome site only has to change name and domain to something that tells us readers that this isnt an official SONY ERICSSON blog. Thats all. change the domain to: http://www.unofficialxperia.com or something and the blogs name can be Xperiablog and then somewhere close the text: Unofficial page about Xperia phones.. or something. U dont have to shut down the page u know.

    i agree with some of the comments, its not the discussion of rumors that bothered SE, its the possibility of people mixing xperiablog with SE official website,  i believe changing the domain to something creative and and a disclaimer emphasizing that this website at any point is not official SE website would for sure please them.  

    We all know how sony is all about security and that stuff so now i would not be surprised they did this. and frankly, and lets be honest here, there are many SE website fans, and yours got popular because when you pop xperia in google, xperblog.net pops as well cause of the similarity.  and i can easily see new comers to mix it up, SE to think it might confuse customers with the real thing, and it’s just more headache for them.

    I had an X10 in the past (currently got Desire S), and was contemplating going back to a SE phone in the future, but this has helped in making my decison no to go ahead with that idea in the future. I have really enjoyed this site for finding out any news on SE. The decision from SE is very short sighted.

    this site has been very helpful, i think SE will regret this in the long run… companies should be thankful for the fanfare they get freely from you guys. Prospective consumers and those of us who have been SE fans, want “real” reviews and not some babble from a paid-up sycophant, because honestly, we can get used to product flaws-im sure some updates can fix that, but expectations that aren’t met is a real deal-breaker.

    I only came across this site because of the domain name and not the site content.
    Most new traffic will arrive here because of this fact, Sony are correct in wanting this traffic to promote to in a much more effective way than is being used here.

    I noticed Sony aren’t asking for the site to be taken down …. use a different Domain instead of posting “boo hoo look what Sony have done to us, aren’t they bad” … which itself reflects badly against what you say about just promoting them.

    Sorry guys, free traffic from trademark. Can’t complain imho.

    I have been buying SE phones a long time. I’ve been eyeing Samsung’s phones for a while. What on earth is Sony doing? Their customer loyalty is already borderline after loads of mistakes.     Really thought of buying a Xperia Arc S or neo (not V) in the 2 weeks before I found your story about your beloved smartphone producer sueing you out of existence. Now, I don’t believe that companies that engage more in patent and brand wars will be the ones winning in a world of social networks, collaboration and ever greater transparency. I truly understand your sad disappointment with the company whose phones you adored. May you find a company that honors your appreciation rather than shutting a meeting place of the community down!     Sad that nowadays all these big brand name corporations have this “this name belongs to me” mindset. They have all the rights to defend their brand name. But I wonder why they never realise that this type of web sites are doing “free promotion” for them. 
    I just bought my Xperia mini pro 6 hours ago. This will be my first and my last Sony Ericsson handphone.
