Sony Mobile to withdraw from Korean market?

in Rumours

Reports from South Korean media are suggesting that Sony Mobile may be close to withdrawing from the mobile phone market in the country. It seems that Sony Mobile Communications Korea is being subsumed within Sony Korea as it winds down its mobile operations in the region, leading to a rumoured total exit from the market.

We know at one point, for example, that the Sony Xperia T was being planned for Korea with LT30k model number, but it never made it to the market. If the rumours are true, it would follow some other high profile mobile manufacturers such as HTC and Motorola, who have recently left the South Korean market. This is hardly a surprise considering the dominance of Samsung in its home territory and Sony Mobile’s efforts are probably better served elsewhere.

    put those resources in Japan.

  • von

They are already in Japan -_- But I think even in Japan Sharp rules there

  • Julius Buma-at

Samsung or any South Korean companies should not be marketed in Japan. That’s what you called give and take or if it’s that what really means.

Samsung smartphones are like toys compared to the ones found in Japan, let alone build quality

  • mountain

People who are familiar with history should know why. Japanese had kind of annexed Korea at the beginning of 20th century, then massacre them in 1923. They are the most hated country. Whom korean with their right mind will buy sony products?

  • Trafalgar

Establishing it in the Philippines might be a good move so we won’t get their phones lateR than the rest of the world.

  • Quark Gluon

And what’s the history behind the move of HTC and Motorola?

  • http://twitter.com/Gitaroo236 Gitarooman

no I mean put even more resources there, and Sharp doesnt rule anymore, I think Sony is now up there, their phones are Docomo best seller I think.

  • Steve Blows Jobz

SM can withdraw from the rest of the world and nobody will notice, except japan, maybe

  • FlowXT

Sharp and Fujitsu are larger players than Sony in the Japanese mobile market. And unlike Sony, they actually manufacture smartphones in Japan. Sony’s founder Akio Morita was deeply opposed to outsourcing production, but nowadays a lot of Sony products and all of the Xperis line up are made in China.

I must say I am truly disappointed in Sony and Sony Mobile Korea (SMK). I understand that Korea is a tough market, but Sony has yet to announce whether the Xperia Z will be released here. The Z has been released in more than 60 countries already yet there is no word on Korea. Not even SMK can give me any answers. In fact no one within the Sony corporation can give me any info.

Japan is a well known country in high tech sophistication that can’t be beaten by any other country in the whole world.

  • nidou bossy

All the assemblies are done in Chinese factories even the Apple, and it’s done by foxconn.. and any other brands.. doesn’t mean ”Made In China” it’s a bad quality product.. NAH, completely wrong!!!, as a matter of fact, it’s because the wages in there are way lower than Europe and US, so yeah.. to manufacture a product it it’s costs way cheaper than to do in US or in another countries (esp EU)… that’s why all is done in China under the control with the respect of the company STANDARDS & CERTIFICATIONS.

  • Annyeong

    Korea rulez!! :D
