Sony prepping 5-inch handset with MediaTek quad-core SoC?

in Rumours, Xperia C, Xperia E, Xperia L

MediaTekSony Mobile may be planning to launch a 5-inch entry-level handset during the third quarter utilising the MediaTek quad-core MT6589 system-on-chip. This news follows previous rumours that Sony will launch new handsets using MediaTek chips. Digitimes is reporting that ODM Arima will manufacture the handset.

Arima has also been contracted to manufacture Sony’s current budget offering, the Xperia E (C160X). Sony has also signed up other ODMs such as Compal Communications who is manufacturing the upcoming Xperia L (C210X). Digitimes says that Arima, Compal and Foxconn combined plan to ship around 8 to 10 million smartphones to Sony during this year.

    Xperia C(hina) ? xD

  • Pi

Sony should make its own SoC

  • sinhue

is better intel, power and value, to its dual core outperform several quad core (even in some respects superior to sosn qualcomm processors)

  • Moe

Mediatek quad core is it slower than s4pro?

  • dimos

its just like having an s4 dualcore (like the one used on xperia t)[that is about the benchmark]

  • SonyFan

Sony make your own SoC and beat all the exynos and the rest SoCs

    why not intel?

Sony’s founder Akio Morita was fiercely opposed to outsourcing, he referred to it as ‘hollowing out’ of a country’s industry. Ironically, Sony’s now doing the very same things that Morita criticized American companies for in the 80s.

“American companies have either shifted output to low-wage countries or come to buy parts and assembled products from countries like Japan that can make quality products at low prices. The result is a hollowing of American industry. The U.S. is abandoning its status as an industrial power.”(1)

Xperia blog pls say why Sony not making own soc?

Steve Jobs said 3.5 inch screen was a good size for a phone and 7 inch is too small for a tablet, look at them now. No one can keep their words for forever

  • fashid

they don’t have the money to sustain r&d. anyway, qualcom processors are good enough. sony needs to improve its displays before thinking of doing their own SOCs.

if 2013 becomes a good year for sony, they may have enough funds to support development.

  • nickname

wtf! sony what are you doing ? we just want our Xperia S to be updated to JB that all!

  • Sparda

hoping that one day, sony will come up with their own SOC. putting in all the best sony technologies in it, like the Bionz image processor, X-Reality instead of software based B-Engine, and the S-Master Digital Amplifier. How about customizing a Snapdragon SOC? like what they did with PSVita’s PowerVR GPU and adding a + sign at the end. Say Qualcomm Snapdragon XXX+?

Guess it will easily beat the Exynos, Tegra, and A-chip. Because most of the chips today always focus on brute processing force WHICH IS NOT APPARENT because Android OS cannot keep up with so much processing power.

  • Sparda

they had the guts to spend soo much with the PS3 Cell CPU. which turned out bad because it lacks developers’ support. ending up getting whooped by the XBOX360 cpu and gpu combo. today mobile phones is where the money is. cant they stop spending so much with cybershots, alpha and bravia’s? and give the xperia brand a fairly huge amount to spend with R&D? cant we guys reach kaz hirai and have him listen to us?

ehhh getting whooped by the 360? They almost have the exact same market share. 360 bigger in the US, PS3 bigger in Japan and Europe. Also the PS3 is more powerful than the 360 but harder to develop for. But the 360 cant run games like Uncharted and God of war. The reason why the PS3 was fairly successful even though the price was high. Gaming and imaging are still their main forte. But Xperia is on the right track.

Jobs was a very different person. Morita was an assertive but calm individual. He co-wrote a book where he outlined his beliefs In a logical, sequential manner. Steve Jobs on the other hand often came across as being unbalanced and would sometimes just say whatever, whenever – often during anger outbursts.

Morita is sometimes quoted in academic and economic research.

After seing how much you have to struggle with updates, I highly recommend people to stick to Qualcomn chipsets. NovaThor is a living hell for modding and updates.

  • sparda

i aint no MS xbox fan dude. I am full fledge sony fanatic since my childhood days. walkman, psone, ps2, se cybershot, etc etc. but let us face it. the xeon cpu combined with the amd gpu beats the cell and its nvidia gpu bigtime. yes, cell cpu has a lot of hidden potential in it, but sony didnt manage to juice it all up. resulting in a poor graphics performance not to mention the outdated architecture used by nviadia with its gpu. sad that sony have to ditch the cell cpu after spending billions in r&d for it.

god of war and uncharted have good graphics because they do not have their xbox counterparts.

  • lolsomany

yes MTK chip using GPU: PowerVR SGX 544 which can display fullHD, sony PSP also using powerVR. this gpu is more powerful than adreno

I really hope that Sony will also make an update for the Xperia ray. A nice, slim 3.3-3.5 qHD quad-core phone with an aluminium shell (and 12hour surfing time).

  • azzido

    why not Snapdragon800? :(

Do u even now how long the update process take time?
ill tell u…the code is not the problem..its don in weeks…but testing it, then let the operator test it and of course google also has to test and all these test take long time…so be quite and wait…and if its a OTA update i will take more time

  • STMicro

No such thing as NovaThor, anymore.

  • 100MAN

    this is my dream

  • paul4id

I wish Sony had kept ST-Ericsson alive and kicking rather than now backing these el cheapo Mediatek chipsets.

XEON CPU? I think you mean Xenon. XEON cpu’s are intel server cpu’s.

But the 360 is definitely not faster. There is a reason why 360 exclusives ar enot looking better than PS3 exclusives. KZ2 and 3 are very impressive in terms of graphics and fully use all the cores of the PS3. The only games that are worse on the PS3 are multiplatform titles like Call of duty that only use one, yes one! of the cores instead of the 6 extra cores (1core is for the os and 1 is disabled).

Uncharted and God of war look good because they are simply buil;t for the PS3 and its architecture, thus unleashing the potentional.

Also i didnt state that you where an 360 fan dude right ;) ?
