Xperia Z Ultra’s display compared to the HTC One and Galaxy S4 [Video]

by XB on 20th August 2013

in Videos, Xperia Z Ultra

XZU display comparisonWe have seen a number of Xperia Z Ultra display comparisons already, one against the HTC One and another against the Xperia Z/ZL. However, this time we have a video comparison looking at the Triluminos display of the Xperia Z Ultra against the LCD 3 display of the HTC One and Super AMOLED display of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The video looks at the comparison both indoors and outdoors and the guys over at MobileGeeks try to determine a winner at the end of it. Check out the video below to see which display tech is crowned the winner.

Thanks Haider!

can anyone give me an another link for this video??
we can’t use youtube in iran

  • solidpig

The comparison wasn’t very well done…
The viewing angle one in particular.

  • adora

this is the lamest ever review I have ever seen…
and what with people comparing viewing angles? even if you share stuff with people around you still who sees at 170 degrees or so? these reviewers are just too much/mad…

  • nima

    ???? ?? ?? ?? ????? ??? ??????? ?? :D
    ?? ??? ?? ????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ??????

  • DooMLoRD

wait till the X-Reality update hits the Xperia Z Ultra and then do the testing ;)

  • Herman

Do you ever put your phone on a table?
    I thought so.

With poor viewing angles you can’t clearly see what’s on your screen when it’s on the table.

  • Vlad

    Bad, bad review.
A really good review would show how the text appears on each display (although it has a 441 ppi pixel density, Galaxy S4 still has Pentile display and I, for example, read a lot on the phone – I have a (normal simple old) LCD screen on my phone and it’s gorgeous for books). Also there is no valuable new information in the video regarding the screens on each and in comparison. My eyes see in the first benchmark image (with the bug) that the Xperia is much more bright and with more yellow involved (it makes the image more dynamic in terms of colour shades). Totally different than the others.

  • faysal

i dont understand why did sony thought it was a good idea to lunch a phone when its not even finished product? they announced the phone with new UI but released it with OLD UI and now these dumb(fanboy) reviewers are giving it bad review.

  • will X-Reality affect all phone display usage or just media like Bravia engine for mobile does now?

  • DooMLoRD

Update is expected in Week 37 (September 9-15, 2013)

    details will be clear then

  • nidou bossy

fuck viewing angle thing, i can still see my things amazingly in front.
    Period

  • Xyor

And the viewing angle in ZU is amazingly great, even compare to the SAMOLED. But I have to say that I still notice the black is not as good as the SLCD and SAMOLED, it seems to have backlit leaking problem.

  • Xyor

Have you ever tried to navigate with your phone in a car that do not have a phone holder? Since my Z’s horrible viewing angle, most of the time I can’t see anything on it.

  • Xyor

    > < We can't either in China, and, I think, the same on north Korea.

  • GammaBurst

I DUNNO MAYBE BECAUSE PEOPLE COMPLAIN SO MUCH ABOUT LONG RELEASE TIME?

  • TjaldidTjaldid

    proxy?

  • GammaBurst

Hey dude your awesome and all. But I just wanna ask you something, Do you prefer Sony phones above all the smartphones out there? And I want your opinion about Triluminous display, cause when I saw the Sony Bravia W90 it was just amazing, and looking at Samsung LED L9 series Samsung looked so bland and boring.

  • faysal

then why announce the dam thing if you cant release it on time? i dont mind but this is getting annoying. they are taking over 2 month just to release the dam thing. ok take your time but dont use OLD UI!!!

  • Babylonbwoy

I’m downloading flv will upload and be back.

  • Cristi13

Well, sony, after all this years, you finally put a good display on one if your smartphones, what took you so long? Well now remains for you to put a good camera. It’s very interesting how people here defend sony, even though sony treated us (sometimes) like shit.

  • @atWidget

I don’t care, I just want Sony!!! I shit on Samsung, if Sony makes a phone with amoled I dont care I will love it, just love Sony because I m just a fanboy… sorry…

  • Jason

I am navigating my phone in a car while driving RIGHT NOW, and I

  • Barilla

I still cannot comprehend why the hell Sony insists on trying to fix in software what should be done by choosing different hardware… It’s the same story as trying to fix cheap headphones / speakers with equalizer – results may be decent, but never as good as headphones / speakers that have those frequencies naturally. Just get the same displays HTC is using and BOOM, every XPERIA phone is now a boss.

  • Babylonbwoy

    next time ask

  • nidou bossy

    yeah right!!!

  • Aks

Agree on that did you know the SLCD used in HTC phones are actually manufactured by SONY .. strange they never used it on their own phones.. may be a patent? not sure …

  • ee

x reality is not needed here because they’re using videos that are already of high quality. x reality only reproduces missing pixels and enhances contrasts. there’s no need to enhance the video shown.

  • Andrew Tan

Exactly, is better they release the beta new UI rather than the old one and keep updating the old UI firmware.

New firmware already send over to ptcrb quite sometimes but Sony still refuse push over to the phone,

This is bad move of Sony, if Sony want make something refreshing on it then during event don’t show the new UI.

People excited also because of the new UI not the old UI.

IS TIME SONY PUSH OVER THE NEW UI now! not waiting your though of golden time then just release!

  • Andrew Tan

I believe X-Reality behave like Bravia Engine 2 which only work in Album and Video, not working everywhere, at least not the main launcher.

In this case means X-Reality is not useful for testing and must turn off during testing.

  • Andrew Tan

This is BAD! Too late for them pushing out the new UI firmware!

  • Andrew Tan

I don’t see any bad on Triluminos display compare with HTC SLCD 3.

Sony use Triluminos display is a great decision, and all future phone shall use this Triluminos display on-wards.

  • Andrie Putra

which mean .. sony has competing display with other brand using Triluminos Display .. and we just wait X-reality display ( maybe more like bravia engine 2 ) ..oh .ok ….

  • Gitarooman

htc one and s4 will have some advantages due to higher ppi. People say anything pass 300 ppi dont matter, the fact is they do. Wait until Honami comes out with X reality engine, slaughter everything.

  • Faisal Armand

The reviewers have a set of lousy eyes I believe

  • moca

    Sharp manufacture SLCD, not Sony…
And Sony Mobile Display division merged Hitachi and Toshiba’s division to become Japan Display.

  • Andrew Tan

S-LCD is a join venture within Samsung and Sony in earlier year 2004.

Sony announced join venture with Sharp in year 2008 to compete effectively with Samsung.

Sony left S-LCD in year 2011 and sold the whole S-LCD shares to Samsung.

Means now S-LCD is 100% acquired by Samsung.

its time to defeat Galaxy S4

come here and vote for Xperia Z: http://itresan.com/18617/s4-vs

in the blue box at the end of comparison choose the second circle and then the click on the button at the bottom of the box.

send it to whoever you know.

  • Andrew Tan

Sony never own any S-LCD anymore.

  • Andrew Tan

    from wiki here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-LCD_Corporation

    S-LCD is own by Samsung.

  • Yusuf

The Xperia Z Ultra has an excellent display. The only flaw it has is the backlight bleeding. Sony should’ve used IPS technology.

  • ee

    Do you have hands?

  • Rob

It’s been for sale for over a month..

  • Rob

… crashed into a tree ’cause he was playing with his phone :)

  • JG

Nice. Do you know if the Sony upcoming lens will be compatible with the Z Ultra?

  • Serdar Aytamaner

    :)

  • jake

No matter what , under sunlight z ultra is best 1:50

  • shayan gozarabadi

  • shayan gozarabadi

i have proxy..but we can’t open youtube with proxy..we have to use vpn but goverment shut down vpn compeletly

  • PowerSonic

    should be..

  • Hasnain Maec Abbas

i dont get it.. Xperia Z ultra has far superior display… u must really be retarded to look at your phone from weird angles… i remember when i phone 4 came out and retina display was promoted nearly every tech website was saying” the angle vewing is just a gimmick as no1 looks at their phones from different angles” and now its like a big deciding factor…

my wife has a s4, brother has a htc one and i have a z ultra… and trust me Blue ray movies look far superior on triluminous tech than amoled or super lcd

  • meld
  • Jaywalker

They should have compared the same size for all phones, of course a bigger screen looks better than a smaller one. That’s an illusion, “there is no spoon”. And beside that, the reflection is very obvious for all 3. So why is triluminous better? I had 3 Xperias and I couldn’t see anything in sunlight with all, I had to search for a shadow or something. And the angle? We want that all people around us to see what we’re doing with our phone? It’s not a tv. Why not 3D glasses and a wall support? Sony brings up all sort of nonsense features for a phone just to get ahead. Good luck with that.

People how fast this zu is, look at the bench mark comparison part, although he presses the button on the zu after he did on the not by like 2 seconds…. In lightning speed LOOK HOW FAST THE ZU IS DAAAAAAMN

  • Asa

I am VERY impressed with the Triluminos display on the Z Ultra. I never really liked the SAMOLED displays because a little bit of sunlight always renders the display unreadable.

In terms of viewing angles it seemed like the Triluminos display had a slight edge over the other two displays. Really like where this is headed to and really optimistic for the Xperia brand.

Btw, this display needs some serious marketing dollars. They should just stand in front of some phone shops and show off!

  • faysal

yh not worldwide! but in china and Vietnam? i dont live there so i dont care and thats my point those guys are buying an unfinished product and waiting for updates to roll out so they can get x-reality pro and the new UI! which should have been on the phone in the first place since they announced the phone with those feature. this only getting sony bad name n review! people are complaining about phone hardreset! sreen stops working and reviewers are just giving it low score which is annoying me since this phone is just the best!

  • Guido

All of them are good phones. But I think on design, the Sony Xperia Z wins. All phones of Sony (Ericsson) were good designed smartphones!

  • Andrew Tan

You are such a person, cannot taste the grape said grape is sour.

  • nidou bossy

Supercrapmoled is just a gimmick and over saturated displays which it doesn’t provide true and natural colors range!

to appreciate and release how valuable Sony’s displays technology are, you can see how crappy Samsung’s displays are.

  • chevapravatdumrong {-_-}
  • Brian Byron De Guzman

They can enjoy their deep blacks while I enjoy more color spectrum from red, green and blue from the triluminos display

  • spade

Duh! He said when you put your phone on the table, sometimes we do that and don’t tell me you always hold your phone no matter what, even while eating!

I am not a hater, just saying sometimes we need viewing angles for hands-free, don’t lie to yourself!

  • kovacslaszlo13

You can use this link many times but i think SLCD not S-LCD
S-LCD is a corporation that makes TFT panels In your link: Products Amorphous TFT LCD panels
    SLCD mean Super LCD
Sorry for my bad english :)

  • Greg Joplin

I want to know where I can find the helicopter video used in this demo.?
    Thanks
    Greg

  • Rob

I can see whos calling on my phone just fine when its laying at the other end of the desk.. So whats really the problem? You can’t watch a movie with correct colors when it’s at a far angle?

  • somerandomguy

    TOR FTW!

  • spade

Good for you, and are you expecting everybody else is the same? Go Buy an iPhone then, because everyone else is just the same right?

  • Xyor

On ZU particular, I think they were rushing because LG was about to release G2 while Sony wanted to be the first to use 800 so they can prove that Xperia’s flagships’ specs are state of art.
