in Rumours, Xperia Z1

Xperia Z1_PR_1We have managed to obtain the full press release for the Sony Xperia Z1 ‘Honami’, which Sony is planning to fully unveil tomorrow. We have seen so many leaks for the device that we know most of the specs, therefore the press release doesn’t allude to too many surprises. However, there are some interesting bits of info we didn’t know.

First of all lets recap on the specs. The Sony Xperia Z1 will come with a 5-inch 1080 x 1980 pixel resolution TFT display. Like the Xperia Z Ultra it comes with a TRILUMINOS display and X-Reality for mobile. The Xperia Z1 will be water resistant and rated IP55/IP58, above that of the Xperia Z (IP55/IP57). Sony continues to use the OmniBalance design and this time includes a “solid one-piece aluminium frame”.

It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chipset which includes a 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 graphics. It will also have 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD memory card slot and a 3000mAh battery capacity.

On the camera front, Sony says that the Xperia Z1 has the “world’s leading camera in a smartphone”. It backs this up by saying “independent testing has confirmed that Xperia Z1 provides the best overall image quality of all leading smartphones”. However, we don’t know whether this includes the Lumia 1020? We hope to find out more on this tomorrow.

In terms of camera specs, the rumours were spot on. Sony is using a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor. This will include Sony’s G Lens (27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture) and “BIONZ for mobile” image processing engine. Sony also talks about a suite of Xperia camera apps that will launch with the device, much of these we have already seen in previous leaks. This includes apps such as Info-eye (visual search), AR effect, Timeshift burst and Social live.

It sounds like the PlayMemories Online app will also be updated to include a new ‘All Sync’ feature that allows users to auto-upload all of their photos (much like Dropbox) but without any storage limitation. What’s not clear is whether this is at original resolutions or compressed. Sony will also launch a new app called TrackID TV, allowing users to search and share information on TV shows. This will only be available in select countries including Germany, UK, France, Japan and the US.

Sony details a number of accessories for the camera including the QX10/QX100 ‘lens-style’ cameras we’ve heard so much of recently, the Smart Imaging Stand IPT-DS10M and Smartphone Tripod SPA-MK20M. Other accessories include the Bluetooth Music Receiver BM10 we saw leaked recently and the Miracast Wireless Display IM10.

The Xperia Z1 has dimensions of 144 x 74 x 8.5mm and weighs 170 grams. The handset will launch with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in three colours (black, purple and white). We can also confirm that Sony expects the handset to go on sale globally during September. Great news for Xperia fans and CEO Kazuo Hirai is certainly delivering on his promise to shorten the lead times between announcement and launch.
