Sony says new update rolling to Xperia Z series; brings numerous bug fixes

by XB on 19th September 2013

in Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR

Sony-logo-wallpaperSony Mobile has just tweeted that a new Android 4.2.2 firmware update is rolling out to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z. They have said the update brings “display, camera, battery fixes & performance tweaks“. No more information has been given, although we expect this to be firmware build number 10.3.1.A.2.67 that recently started to hit Xperia ZR handsets.

Thanks Sami!

What the heck is wrong with Sony, why they still hasn’t release any Xperia ion jellybean firmware bug fix yet like Xperia S,acro S and Xperia SL did…they focus on updating all other devices but not fixing the bug in the Xperia ion jb…

  • Rz

oh please, ION is an outdated phone. pls dont disturb our holy xperia Z series article and go moan at ur own outdated phone article

  • Sen. Rockie

The S and its brothers are getting old for Sony to update, deal with it. It’s how s#!t works…

  • Lemuel Aduca

ROOT your phone and install custom roms..

  • Veeren

still 4.2 … please concentrate on 4.3 sony to release it asap ..

  • Nathan

I’m with you but this update sounds good too. Have there been any rumors as to a time period for the 4.3 update?

  • AMG38

Honestly they’re getting better and better. We also know that we will get 4.3 and this makes me sure that i have made the right decision buying an XZ. Maybe we will also get 4.4 kitkat, but that’s impropable :)

  • guest

I could only wish that they’d bring the new UI from the Z1.

  • AMG38

    be sure they will :)

  • Denislav Popov

Don’t you remember what Sony said? “Some phones will be upgraded directly to 4.3”. Fingers crossed for Ion to be amongst these phones…

  • Sensible Person

why thinking of 4.3 when 4.4 will be out, mid of October? wouldn’t it be great if the Z jumps straight to KitKat? be sensible please.

  • dead_lion

how about Xperia T?? come on Sony! did u forget about Xperia T and V??? #F

  • Cristi13

If we didn’t complained at that time for xperia s and ion, you would be in the same situation as sony would never listen because you’re too busy kissing sony’s ass. So please take your holy xperia z and and shove it up your holy ignorant ass.

  • Chee Siong Lee

Ive sold my Z for Z1…..

  • aldopucci

Got a Z, but you are so right Cristi13. Cheers from Italy

  • Hakan Mutlu

I was asking to myself when I was in the toilet yesterday, why there is no update rolled recently. I’m glad I did.

  • kaostheory

SG4 released before T getting 4.2.2. Sony needs to try a little harder.

  • kaostheory

This is the last update for Z, cause Z1 is now out!

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

Hopefully in that case…I’ll be damn happy

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

Straight to 4.3 as said at their official blog.

  • Azhar Azzy

Doing grrrt job sony….. Since i bought Xperia Z its been updated thrice the firmware … now the fourth update is announced…. m so happy long live sony…

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

While waiting for the Xperia Z1 to land in my country, I guess I’ll get to enjoy this update on my ZL.

  • osamaH Al-Amri

I’ve got 2.5mb update notification yesterday. The weird thing other than the size is that the FW version is the same!! 10.3.1.A.0.244.. Anyone else?

  • Nothing new here in Istanbul… Awaiting for this new fw…

  • Fadi Obaya

dude, shut the fuck up, your life is outdated

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

You know what?I am fu*king grateful that Sony updated my ‘so old’ phone with jellybean even the driver for Qualcomm have stop being delivered, but I don’t fu*cking appreciate that they give us a jellybean full of bug,for example in ICS my ion can hold up for 3 days in standby mode,in jellybean,it can barely stand less than 24 hours…also, the recording have dramatically drop from 30fps to 12-15 fps…and all of this bug have been fixed by Sony, but they give it to Xperia S,acro S and SL only….imagine if your Xperia Z got this problem,I’m sure you will freaking complain too

  • Alessandro Romano

Thank you Sony, you are the best <3

Seriously? My God! I hope to update the Sony Xperia T for a long time, it is still a great smartphone! Where she gave this news?

  • Silas Arentsen

Not confirmed, just rumoured! But i rooted my Xperia T and installed a custom rom based on latest firmware (.145) with Xperia Z1 looks. This works good enough to wait even longer for 4.3 or 4.2.2

  • xperiancer

S4 is released this year. T was released last year. Might want to research a little better before trolling?

  • lovebmw

what bugs? my z is just fine

  • Cristi13

Thank you for understanding, also cheers to you from your european neighbour, Romania.

Xperia Z1 battery test is out..

    it’s horrible..

    i’m so depressed now..

    http://blog.gsmarena.com/the-sony-xperia-z1-battery-tests-are-done-heres-the-score/

  • Jaouad

With those numbers something must be wrong. Probably an update to fix that drain. At least my Dad will be happy with this phone. He always complains that batteries suck when making phone calls. I think this phone will have outstanding batterylife after a few updates. Now it is good.

  • shayan gozarabadi

it’s not even good for such a phone!
and even if it gets better with an update how much better it will be??
and who cares if it does better?? because we won’t see the difference..
i’m really tired waiting for a sony phone with good battery life

  • zakriya

I have the same also and size was also same.

  • czxczx

    f*cking your ass

  • bugless

i think the only bug our Xperia Z has, is that it has no bugs! =P

  • gMailman

    Sad but true :(

  • knightpt

Stop trolling. Sony Officialy anounced 4.3 update will be launched for Xperia Z, ZL, SP and ZR (at least), so by logic this can’t be the last update for the Z…

    QQ less please.

  • upincanada

I’ve had 4.2.2, 10.3.A.0.423 for 2 months already on my zl.

  • Diego S.

I am just wondering when the T-Mobile Xperia Z (C6606) will be upgraded to 4.2.2. It’s taking forever!!!

  • misael

hace pocos dias me xperia z resibio una actualizacion pero era el mismo numero de compilación al que tenia , la diferencia era que donde decia lti ahora dice 4g

  • Faisal Armand

I’m looking to replace my xperia z with xperia z1 but..

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Wonder if Display improvement means X Reality… May be I am too demanding :P

  • Prateek Bhanushali

GSMarena has already mentioned it was a pre production Unit, one should wait for final unit…..

  • shayan gozarabadi

worse than that is battery life..
    Z1 is a total fail

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

I hope it’s screen flickering fix

  • > complains about bad battery life
    > updates might improves battery life
    > doesn’t care about update “and who cares if it does better??”

do you see something wrong with your argument?
lower your expectation and phone usage, that’ll increase your battery life for sure

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Hope they fix white balance issue…. Screen looks lil pinkish with overexpose details…. My brother’s zr has much accurate colors than my Z…..

  • knightpt

I thought that 244 update already had a White balance slider for that under display options? I used it and after testing some my whites are great…

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Ther is an option for White balance but even if you set it to the default value, you get slightly pink hue. And while watching videos, skin surface gets overblown which spoils the experience and they are much better on ZR…. I have checked it myself the Z without white balance had better whites and colors with bravia engine on…

  • lovebmw

dont worry man, that will be fxed with a firmware… come on dude relax, have some faith in sony

  • Brad Williams

Thanx for sharing, but to me this is not a real time test. They don’t use Stamina mode, which I for one always use, then flog the battery dry. No-one does that to their phone. I would agree in one area; web browsing could be a lot better. I find the same on my Z. Made even worse if using Sony Music Unlimited.

  • Brad Williams

This is great news…….. Now roll on Kit Kat. :)

  • Cp2020

Battery does improve after few cycles of charging/discharging [ but not fully ]. And an improvement is quite significant. GSMArena probably doesn’t take that into consideration. I’m currently on my second XZ [ got first one replaced after black spots on camera ]. Exactly same results. After about 2-3 weeks huge increase in battery live. Newer go below 50% after 12h use…and trust me i DO use it and mainly for browsing and watching films. I know Z is not Z1 but still. Anyway I believe Sony will sort it out with updates…they care about them a lot more than last year. Can’t really see them ruining their new flagship’s reputation with poor battery live scores especially after they decided to put a 3000mAh unit into it. Or….maybe its just a really inefficient display.

  • Brad Williams

T was released a clear 6 mths before the S4!!! Go and troll your own blogs, we wont find much satisfaction in here anyway.

  • Brad Williams

Actually the word I hear is the Z will be getting Kit Kat, so we are a way off being dated yet. ;)

  • Brad Williams

    :)

  • Eymert

There are still several bugs. Camera quality is still not up to par with competing smartphones (like the Iphone 5, older Samsung Galaxy SIII who also use Sony sensors). Camera software continues to process photos too agressively and use a too agressive jpeg compression.

  • lovebmw

That’s not a bug, just bad common sense

  • Alex Frías

Because complaining here will somehow bring Sony’s attention, right? Right?

  • shayan gozarabadi

i just doesn’t make sense!! xperia zu with huge screen and same battery scored almost 9 hours in video playback…how z1 can only last 6 hours..
and what you said about battery needs few cycles of charging..it consider all phones ad all brands not just sony

  • shayan gozarabadi

stamina mode has nothing to do with web browsing and video playback and z1 with a huge battery only last half of other flagships like g2
also camera is not that impressive..it’s a total fail for me

  • shayan gozarabadi

it’s not gonna fix buddy..believe me
and even if does how much gonna improve in web browsing and video playing?? 1 hour? it’s still terrible
and i’m tired of having faith in sony..i’m gonna stop being a fanboy and get what is really best for me

  • shayan gozarabadi

there’s nothing wrong with it..i’m the guy that always support sony phones here..
when i’m complaining believe that it’s right
and i didn’t say updates might improves battery life..because it won’t

  • mustafa

There’s actually a volume animation glitch

  • I don’t know about you but it did for my Z since 2 updates ago

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

You should read the review from unleash the phones.

  • Rizky Maulana

    where’s ion ??

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

    When ?

  • [A]dri[A]n

That sir, is entirely up to T-Mobile Lol

  • [A]dri[A]n

Just purchased a Z yesterday. Can’t wait to get it :)

  • Faisal Armand

I know.. But still, it bugs me one way or another.

But thank goodness that the camera’s fault comes from focusing problems and medium noise levels from 20MP samples (those aren’t the main problems in.my image quality assesment).

But still, Z1’s camera is way superior than the camera of samsung galaxy s4 and LG G2 and even matches lumia 1020 in some conditions. :)

  • Keon Fraites

Hmm sounds like alot of tweaks and bug fixes, maybe they’ll eve work on heat dispersal of the processor looking forward to this update.

  • Arokhantos
  • torqe

Cp2020 is right. you must give your hardware to optimize with your software and usage trends, apps installed etc.. depending on what your usage and apps installed, it will take a while.. a week or so for it to get optimized. So, don’t go by these reviews. I have xperia Z1 with great battery life and Sonys Stamina Mode rocks on top of it.

  • Dhinesh

    what about xperia sp..???

  • Than Ramile Dela Cruz

is this true about the battery test of this xperia z1?!!! sooo depressing!!

    Talk time: 26:53 hours
    Web browsing: 5:59 hours

    Video playback: 6:12 hours
    Endurance rating: 53 hours

    Source: http://blog.gsmarena.com/the-sony-xperia-z1-battery-tests-are-done-heres-the-score/

  • Tons

Yeah… My XZ takes about 3 weeks before i can use it full days without charging, and it still had 20%
My first 3 weeks really depressing, almost lose faith with sony.. Since my XS only takes a week to work on fully optimized battery. I thought that was really XZ’s battery performance

  • Micro

Exactly! This test completely don’t fit anything I see myself with my own eyes! Where is the standby time in this test? Oh, or maybe they can’t put the result, because it didn’t died yet since they got it? I don’t believe this test. Because I was so excited with Z1 when it came on Tuesday, that once I charged it to full – believe me – I did NOT spare the power.. I was playing with it for almost 3 days on one charge, battery died yesterday late night (Friday actually) so where it is the weakness?

Sure if they want to prove Z1 have poor battery they will browse Internet at full brightness, backlight optimization OFF and with X-Reality ON, scrolling continuously the same page for hours, but who does that..? Hey, it’s 5″ display! It needs power.. and it is NOT freaking samoled, it’s LCD…
And this was on first charge, phone didn’t have time to adapt yet – 3 days of heavy fun – is this bad?
Look at talk times – when screen is mostly OFF all the time, it stays 2 times longer than the others.

  • Bob dole

When did Ion become part of the Z-series?

  • kightpt

2013 line of Xperias all have the same problem wich is the screen being sub-par to other IPS displays on other top-end phones in therms of quality, and realy realy eating a lot of battery on the process of being sucky anyways.

It’s not a convincing technology atm, the displays they use realy need changing in 2014.

Z1 has the same processor and graphics, the same battery capacity and the LG G2 has nearly DOUBLE the times on web browsing and Video playback.

This can only be either the screen tech on the Z1 is realy bad in energy conservation, or bad UI optimization. Sony had loads of time to perfect the UI, so i’m betting the screen is (again) sub-par.

  • Jobs

The displays are sub-par?! You CLEARLY have not seen the Z Ultra

  • Micro

Guys were just kind to themselves, but apparently you won’t understand that, ever.

  • hocestquisumus

Battery fixes. VERY welcome since my Z started really stinking in that department lately instead of getting better with a few charging cycles. And no, it’s not some app run wild since the problem persisted over a complete wipe and with no apps whatsoever installed.

However, the Xperia Tablet Z actually got a little better with 4.2.2. Yet battery problems are a Sony trademark I guess – every single one of my NEX cameras (3 and 5s) as well as the Walkman MP3 players really stink when it comes to battery life.

  • noell

what display, battery and camera fixes ? is something wrong ? i did not notices

  • xperiafan324

    rofl, that’s so true!
Maybe this update brings the tweaks of the Z1 to the older devices?

  • xperiafan324

Actually he’s right, all Xperias but the Z Ultra have lower quality screens, the Z and Z1 have what’s called e-IPS (e is supposed to be for economical maybe, I don’t know for sure) which is a cheaper, lower quality, easier to produce screen compared to the other variants like AH-IPS , and whatever LG’s using in its G2.
The Z Ultra however has that glorious AH-IPS screen coupled with the sumptuous triluminos backlighting and the X reality engine. Basically the Z1 screen with X reality on looks as good as the Z Ultra with X Reality off, so it is a big difference in quality. And sadly that poorer quality screen gives even worse battery performance.
That’s why I’m now waiting for the rumoured 5.2 ” refresher of the Z1 (no not the 500 ppi IGZO one, the older rumor that was actually believable – 1080p 5.2 ” Snapdragon 800 with Adreno 340 instead of Adreno 330, and maybe better video capabilities)

  • knightpt

i have 2 of them on display on the shop, so yeah i see them a lot. I work in a smartphone/tablet shop in my country so i have access to nearly all phones in the market bar a few that are china/japan/india marketed like the Xperia A, etc.

Z ultra screen is ok. But sub-par to others in the market like the OPPO find 5, HTC one, LG optimus G2, SG4 (altough i find this last 2 overly saturated and the SG4 blue burn-in after some usease it’s bad), and some others, and yes i know I am comparing 5” with 6,44” wich is wrong for me.

2013 Sony displays so far are ALL underwhelming. Only Sony fans (wich i am one for sure) say otherwise, but i’m not 100% blind.

My wife Xperia J (2012) has more color vibrance and wider viewing angles than any of the 2013 Xperias, ofc has a much lower resolution aswell. Even Xperia ION has a better screen than Xperia Z, for example except on the sharpness/resolution.

  • xperiafan324

I think the point of the white balance was to set it whatever the way you like, these lcds really have no “default” since it’s all about calibration. The slider doesn’t need to be centered on any value being default, because the feature was added because many people had screens that were too warm or too cool etc. Had the calibration been perfect or close-to-perfect, Sony wouldn’t have given Z users the option.

  • Cristi13

I said European neighbour, or you’re saying tgat these two countries are not in europe?

  • knightpt

Not sure XZ have an e-IPS panel. e-IPS are suposed to have worse viewing angles than S-IPS / AH-IPS etc but not THAT bad as in the XZ wich realy reminds me of the TN panels i see on 19” monitors we have here in the shop.

I won’t pretend i’m an expert in IPS technology, i can only say that even the Z-Ultra doesnt convince me, unless you are seeing a picture in the Sony album app and it has x-reality ON, but then again it’s just a saturation boost and overly processed image to increase sharpness, a software trick.

  • a reply to an idiot

    up in your arsehole

  • Robert Forslund

You can always improve things, even if there is no problems. =D

  • roeshak

Before you start attacking him, remember that the s3 which was released long before the T is on 4.2 and soon to be on 4.3

  • mustafa

It happens whenever I try to lower the volume more despite it being on zero. I’m on .244

  • knightpt

Could be anything realy…. from just better out-of-the-box default white balance tints to better contrast rations, up to a lower minimum speed for the CPU while idle, etc, who knows…

I’m so curious about this and the hype is so big now that i’m realy realy afraid of being disapointed if things are not noticeable …. but if that happens i guess it’s largely because of the hype i built into myself prior to knowing what is suposed to be improved.

  • Arian Rivers

    is it out yet? :(

  • Ney

I hope they will fix screen contrast. Gradients and shady areas look terrible since “white balance” update.

  • Tobias Hedlund

I know there is a site where us xperia users can see were all the updates been released..

  • panagi?tis

s3 is on 4.1 they will skip 4.2 and they going to release 4.3 October with the S4 4.3

  • Babylonbwoy

I think that all the people that were saying that Sony don’t give a fuck about past flagship were right, I didn’t want to admit it but now we can see that they really don’t give a damn fuck about the Xperia T. When the update will arrive the handset will be outdated and un-sell-able

What about possibility to install apps on SD-card???

  • Noell

Indeed. Glad sony starts to updating their software faster than last year.
At least our XZ only takes 3 months to get 4.2 even theres just a little feature
Unlike my last XS, takes almost 7 months to get ICS

  • ShopByChoice

The Sony Xperia Z gives you everything you need to make work. It is well designed smart phones. It’s model is very attractive and available in many different colors .I like this phone due to simple interface and user friendly functions .

    http://www.shopbychoice.com/sony-xperia-z-purple/p/TXpFM09EUT0

  • I have a ZL and I like it very much, incl the display. It switches networks quickly- LTE/HSPA/HSPA+. I always leave stamina mode on as well as power saving mode.

I get at least several days’ battery life with moderate calling, email, web browsing etc. I NEVER watch video on the phone and set the display to the lowest possible brightness . wifi and bluetooth remain turned off.

Not sure about all these complaints of battery; usage patterns vary. Even with the power saving modes, apps run smooth and fast and the OS responds well.

XZ has either a very, very good TN panel (it has TNs poor viewing angles but very good full sRGB gamut which is like impossible for TN) or very bad VA panel (it has that sRGB gamut but poor viewing angles and low contrast which are both really weird for VA panel).

  • khan

so you have Z & a ZR at your place.
would you please suggest me which one to buy
i am badly confused between these 2.
i would have taken z but i am afraid as i heard many negative reviews about the xperia Z’s glass. People complaining that the glass cracks itself or due to over heating.
My main criteria is camera and i am quite a rough user. Would want my phone to work fine for a minimum of 3 yrs as i would be spending 30k.

  • neillos2408

Have just bought the Sony Xperia Z Tablet. This has to be the worst battery performance I have ever experienced on any tablet. Previously I have owned various Samsung tabs and iPads. Xperia is just awful in battery life and worse still the recharging time is appalling. All in all I’d say this make the tablet pretty much unusable.

  • Austin Machado

Xperia Z noticeably slower after 4.2.2 update
