Android 4.3 Jelly Bean arrives next month for a wide range of Sony Xperia handsets

by XB on 7th November 2013

in Android, Featured Content, Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia ZR

android-43-jelly-bean-240713Sony Mobile has just confirmed that it plans to update ten Xperia handsets to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean from December 2013 onwards. The handsets on the list includes the Xperia Z series (Z, ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, Z1 and Tablet Z) along with the Xperia SP. It also confirmed that a number of older handsets will also get Android 4.3 including the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V.

A number of recent lower-end handsets have not made the list at all though, including the Xperia L, Xperia M and Xperia C. The Xperia L and Xperia M should be able to handle the upgrade, so maybe Sony has decided not to update these handsets given their positioning. This would be a shame though especially since they only launched within the last six months. The Xperia C has limited availability so we can understand if that was left off due to commercial reasons. We’ll keep you posted as the countdown to the Android 4.3 update commences.

  • SSyar

They also have Xperia S.,., just a reminder to Sony

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

At least give Xperia ion jellybean 6.2.B.1.96 that fixed the 6.2.B.0.211 bug! (jellybean 4.1.2)

  • Maxime

Xperia SP yet, they don’t do the Xperia S? Kinda odd.

  • Zonto

    Xperia S?

  • Ani

    Thats a good news.
Hope they do it faster as they have said..

  • Nek0

Xperia S will no longer receive updates. One year of support is kinda odd but well… I think it’s time to change to a newer smartphone lol

  • Keon Fraites

That’s due to Qualcomm, Xperia S has the Snapdragon S3, SP has Snapdragon S4 proccessor, Qualcomm stopped supporting drivers for the S3 :<

  • Pratik Prajapati

Agree wid you..i’m just pissed of with this laggy camera..even nokia asha takes better photos than this!

  • Impressive they’ll be rolling out so many phones at once. Looking forward to getting 4.3 next month for the ZL. Hopefully KitKat can be implemented within 3 months. (I’m just being reasonable.) It took 4 or so months for 4.1->4.2 I think, right?

    Wasn’t the TX a S3-based processor or S4?

  • Richard Muller

    Xperia S? come on Sony

  • Silas Arentsen

    S4 based ;)

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

Seriously I am staying with ICS until Sony released the 6.2.B.1.96 update

  • Dev
  • Emil Oskarsson

Qualcomms fault they don’t update it :/

  • Ali Ahmed

Xperia SP is way better than the XPeria S and its newer

  • sonyguest

Sony knew xperia S users will voice their concerns regarding the 4.3 update
That’s why they gave us the keyboard app update

  • Hussain Murtaza Syed

    any plans for xperia L

  • Damien

    Yesss Xperia T wook

  • Get Far Gigie

    xperia v hooray!

  • karthik

    what about Xperia P

  • David

Xperia S is and will be my last Sony android phone. With every update, new bugs. And after one year no more support???? I feel ripped off…bye Sony.

  • yuskhayru

    r.i.p dude.

  • Gitarooman

though ppl should learn by now that low end phones probably will never receive update. The fact that they are updating the T and V still are good enough for me.

  • Maxime

Of course it is! Yet these are very similar phones aren’t they

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

LOL, they take ages to update the phones, Guess what Samsung released their 4.3 for Galaxy S3 which came with Xperia S.

  • davo77

Phew! I just swapped Xperia SL for Z last month :)

  • Caio Faria

I am happy that the Xperia T will upgrade to 4.3, but hopefully also update to 4.4 :'(

  • Ali Ahmed

yes but sony is literally the worst company in providing any updates specially for old devices
considering the XPeria S is a year and half old and still running 4.1 its a miracle

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

STFU Getting real sick and tired of Xperia S comments everywhere! Guess what, they also have a popular development forum! Flash any 4.3 ROM from XDA!

  • Maxime

“Miracle” sounds like an understatement loooool!

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    Cry somewhere else. -.-

  • neville chidawanyika

Yeah dawg thats true, lets hope we getting the 4.4 soon

  • Ali Ahmed

im not underestamting the phone itself im saying that sony keeping a 1 year and half old phone updates like my phone which is 6 months old is a miracle

  • neville chidawanyika

Sony has nothing but love. Your pocket should buy big to get big

  • Ali Ahmed

the problem is i cant even manage to find any 4.3 good roms for sony phones because even XDA developers arent conserd about sony

  • neville chidawanyika

Xperia L jus got 4.2.2 what else do you want

  • Guest

    Lie Down.
    Try Not To Cry.
    Cry A Lot.

  • Ali Ahmed

he have a point because the galaxy S3 got the update and the xperia S didnt !

  • Vitali

    Lie Down.
    Try Not To Cry.
    CRY A LOT.

  • neville chidawanyika

Xperia SP has krait and Xperia S has scorpion so they are way different phones old technology vs new here

  • jack

    xperia P then????

  • neville chidawanyika

Im glad the XperIa T is getting 4.3 tho I know we are next in like to be booted out on updates like the XperIa S

  • Americo Di Cintio

    What about Xperia u?!

  • Jerry Berglund

Well, to be honest they arent the worst. The problem is that they seemed to have change their policy on upgrades when they became Sony. Sony Ericsson was better with upgrade on any phones. But as Sony they suddely changde it to newly released phones, and the once they concentrating their efforts on is the Z-series. Dont know why?

  • Vitali

    xperia S users SAD… SO SAD… :C
    Like if you agree!

  • Jerry Berglund

Hey, give it up, please. The Xperia S still get software updates, and stuff. So they still get support. What they cant get is the newest OS, and that isnt Sonys fault. Its Qualcomm that desides to stop making drivers for that plattform Xperia S is built upon. Sure you can blame SOny for releasing an old plattform that late in time, but that is their only fault.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Because Galaxy S3 runs on Exynos! Samsung doesn’t have to run to Qualcomm for the drivers! How is that a point then?

  • xperianer

yeah we guessed it, and here it is, our lovely XT will get 4.3….good enough for me, didnt expect 4.4 and dont need it…
Kitkat ….never liked that chocolate :D
uuuuh google now on the left homescreen….uiii…transparent statusbar oO
uuuiuiiiiii default homescreen page is the left one, not changeable^^ wtf
iiiih google search included in the launcher?^^
ooooh and not to forget…still no system wide light theme

thanks to sony….but hmmm better stay sceptical and wait when it arrive in europe xD

  • Jerry Berglund

When it comes to Xperia L, Xperia M and Xperia C and some more phones who wasnt on the list. Sony do not say, they wont get any update at all. Maybe they tested 4.3 on those devices and found out, they wasnt getting better on that OS, so they maybe testing 4.4 instead. SO maybe many of those low-end smartphones will get kitkat instead. I hope so at least.

  • Pratik Prajapati

I don’t even expect 4.3 or anything like that with new problems..just they should solve the laggy camera and other issues post jellybean update..they can’t leave us like this

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

and I can say this is such a perfect point. thumbs up.

  • Sudhindra Kumar

Damn it SONY.. Xperia L, M and C which were released just about 6 months ago also not in the list.. Completely rejected Xperia S, where as Xperia T, TX, V are getting it, which apparently was a device that was released in 2012 itself.. Very unfair.. I am never buying SONY again.. That’s it..!!!!!

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

Yeah…I was like dafuq when they didn’t release the jb bug fix update for Xperia ion

  • Mayank Joshi

    Great dude :)

  • Xyor

The kernel of P’s 4.1 is even older…

  • qqq

Well, except for the people with locked bootloaders…

  • qqq

    >literally the worst company in providing any updates
    But that’s a complete lie

  • Ostap Koloda

F”’t IT! I have Xperia S. We were in the end of the list who received 4.1.2 and now we even get a f”’ng 4.2.2 I’m not even saying about 4.3 or 4.4. F;;T it Sony, what’s wrong with you? Some God damn s///y Samsungs get updates as soon as it is released and You can not care about your customers. Sure..how can you – PEOPLE spent your money, we’ve released Z, now we will release Z1 – and in a year GOOD Bye Z series because we want you to buy SOMETHING FUC::NG else if you want to be in touch of Google Updates. Just fu””ing look how much people say “WHAT ABOUT XPERIA S?” How much people has it

  • Ostap Koloda

    f..k you

  • Guest

I have a Xperia S and no doubt that I love and I don´t regret the purchase as well as the latest version of 4.1.2 that Sony launched was very very good and had no problems with it.

Of course I’d love to get new updates, but at least I would be happy if Sony gave us the new media apps or a new keyboard or other things … I guess it was not asking too much.

Of course I already have thanks to the xperia blog that shares whenever it has knowledge of the apk and give readers / users of the smartphone, but it would be nice to get from Sony and not by members of xda.

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

At least Xperia S,SL and acro S users got the fixed jellybean…while Xperia ion users are left with jellybean that are full of bug

  • be realistic

you have to be realistic my friend, these are more “cheap” phones, as a buyer you should know right when you pay it that there will not sooooo much support, sorry to say that

    but normal huh

  • hsong

Novathor has gone bankrupt,u think it can get android 4.3?

  • hsong

Qualcomm stopped supporting drivers for smartphones running S3,so XPeria S is not getting android 4.3

  • sonyguest

That’s true , the support from sony is rather disappointing but the phone is still amazing
Being only a dual core compared to other phones, it performs exceptionally well
But again if sony improve on their support division im sure this phone will continue for an even longer time

  • steffen gjærdingen

i just realy hope, they have done some realy big camera tweaking in 4.3/4.4!
Becuse of the camera as it is like now (even with the new FW) it sould be capeable for alot more

  • Jerry Berglund

Yes it will, but no new OS-updates. It just yesterday got a new update for its keyboard.

  • 3rdflyleaf

I don’t understand why Sony is not giving an app update like Album, and Walkman. Sony really wants us to upgrade our phone. Lol. That’s why I already sold my XperiaS.

  • Lord RD

Let us make a revolution on Sony :-D
    Hhhhh

  • hamody

Fuck you sony fuck fuck. your fuckin xperia s(the fuckin flagship of 2012)take it I don’t want it.fuck you sony

  • Markandeya

Fuck you! Why the fuck should people try flashing some custom ROM when they have bought the phone by paying its full price?

If you are tired of reading those comments, write the same thing on a paper and shove it up your punk ass, you fugly motherfucker.

  • neville chidawanyika

They might get a bug fix update though lol

  • ShinOrochiX

What about Xperia M and L, both are modern 2013 smartphones? Sony better announce Kit-Kat at the minimum for both devices.

  • filo9011

    nothing

  • David

Hey Guys, I’m not crying, I’m just being honest. It was one of their number one phones 2012, but it wasn’t treated that way. And for my taste, the updated roms were to buggy….

  • Pingback: Diggmobile | Android 4.3 Jelly Bean arrives next month for a wide range of Sony Xperia handsets()

  • ShinOrochiX

Sorry mate but early 2012 devices (Xperia NXT) will not receive any further major firmware updates as they run on the NovaThor SoC which is no longer in production hence discontinued (ST-Ericsson no longer exists). So phones like the P, U, Go & Sola will not receive new android versions. As for the S running the Snapdragon S3 chip-it will also no longer receive major android upgrades as Qualcomm decided not to release the firmware resources which support the chip. Sony may give other excuses regarding performance, memory etc… but what I have stated is the truth.

  • ShinOrochiX

The keyboard update was ridiculous, I guess it’s purpose was to temporarily distract Xperia S users while they announce new android versions for other (newer) phones.

  • ShinOrochiX

Not a chance-don’t forget this is Sony. You can expect updates on time at the earliest-never quicker!

  • Miny

    YAY

  • Daniel Lopez Rios

Xperia E…. WTF??? Please.., I want to..! :D

  • alireza

i just wanna say ” FUCK YOU SONY ” coz i have a xperia p and it has alot of software problems and you mothe fucker dont release an update for it, SHAME on you and FUCK YOUU

  • ipatz

    No Xperia Tablet S?

  • Clarence Alvarado

Because GS3 uses Exynos SoC. They have the drivers and firmware resources for upgrade.

  • Ben Lim

Same here dude. stuck with .211, I end up flashing rom ported from .96 xperia S (search xda developer).

  • Gregorian

    Well, I’m happy.
Nice to get 4.3 on my TX.
I don’t actually care much about whatever features are in 4.3, but it does mean the phone firmware gets one last Sony update. One last bit of slickening up.

Which will be nice for whoever gets the phone after my Nexus 5 arrives.

  • jag

Isn’t it that sony always mention that any phone will be supported for a year and a half when they launch their phones? I really don’t know if these guys were paying attention. Well of course low end phones won’t have the same privilege. You guys who bought it should know right from the beginning.

  • Hambeast

Worst is LG. Optimus G from last year is on 4.1 and will likely never be updated.

  • Hambeast

Rumour has it T/V will get 4.4 and end there. That’s pretty decent I reckon.

  • Guelmigs

    How about Xperia Acro S?

  • Guest

Apparently, all devices you have mentioned above is a mid/low-end, unlike T/TX is a flagships and V are high-end and not to mention that all of them came with expensive price tag on launch..

  • LancerEX

Maybe the L and M will get 4.4, since it’s optimized for less powerful phones. :) Anyway, I still miss Sony Ericsson’s way of updating almost the entire lineup simultaneously.

  • rexperia

OMG! every times I read comment, it’s flooded by the XS user and they keep complaining about what they have on their phone, remember! Sony was released XS with GB at the time launched and please name how many updates that sony gave to the phone??? If compared to another brands, I think sony quite being nice for giving an updates for selected phone and consider about the soc too on the XS, not only sony… I think some of other brands whic are using same soc it stucked on JB 4.1.. be grateful and be happy with what you have.

  • rexperia

What kind of buggy you’re talking about? I have SL and it’s just fine after I got latest firmware .96

  • Pingback: ???? Sony ???????????? Android 4.3 ???????????? ??????? Android 4.4 | ARiP()

S4 Plus to be exact, same as Xperia T including Adreno 225 gpu..

  • Guest

More to SONY fault because they shouldn’t put outdated SoC on their flagship if you ask me..

  • trnz

    update for ion please………….

  • APai

beats me too – one of those silly things that can drive people. it’s an app. not rocket science stuff, why can’t sony do it ?

  • Ehsano

Sony please give the xperia s android 4.2.2 and no more

  • APai

yup, I’m embalming my sola to preserve it better :D

  • APai

it’s unfortunate – that 4.4 might not get 4.4, when it suits it better!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

In Ericsson era, every smartphones had same chipset and hardware…… Now the situation is completely different :) Sony is doing the best it can !!!!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

    Fuck “U” :D :D

  • APai

    “…december 2013 ONWARDS”

so the T/TX/TL/V users can stop holding their breath until the next year at least ? perhaps it’d roll out to the Z series first, and then to the older series. that’s going to be well within the next 3-4 months I suppose

  • Hussain Murtaza Syed

    the build isnt stable :(

  • dhanushka sampath

    I waiting for 4.3update with xperia v

  • imparanoic

I am expecting dual shock 3 native support on 4.3 for zr, t/tx, v, bring it on sony, they have made xperia the gamers mobile phone, I have looking to games with real controllers on my tx

  • anonymous

why you dont give upgrade Xperia M or Xperia L to JB 4.3 or Kitkat ?
the specification its amazing to run JB 4.3 or Kitkat, you lose customer sony !!

  • rexperia

the way you talk is like an uneducated person…

  • APai

sad part, not everyone is adept at doing that. so sony owes big time to people having invested their hard earned money on S.

  • rexperia

go home!!! you drunk…and get some “languages” class!!!

  • APai

well, T was the galaxy s3 competitor. they are receiving 4.3 *right now*. so, in that respect, sony should rightfully do the same, or else the term flagship loses meaning. sony should at least upgrade the flagship phones to at least 2 major point releases. if it were released with 4.1, then all the way till 4.4, since they skipped 4.2 or were pretty slow to get off the blocks

  • jbrattis

Does 4.3 include better support for lefthanded use? Whenever I hold the phone horizontally in my left hand, the main menu with the home and back soft buttons are to the far right. Requires two hand use of the phone. It should be possible to have the menu on the left in horizontal mode.

  • SmartAss

Haters’ gonna hate, did SONY force you to buy the Xperia S ? They announced the specs to the public so customers can make their own purchasing decision – where 95% of them don’t give a shit about what android version they are getting (or will get) – it’s all about thinking for the wider consumer base.

  • Guest

Well, I think it’s a shame the way Sony deals with older devices and they show little respect for their owners. To be honest they should list the current situation for every device in their lineup, whether it is going to be updated or not, or if it’s being taken into consideration. I’d prefer to know my phone is never going to be updated than living in a constant state of doubt.

  • PowerSonic

    bye

  • jack

Blablabla..lazy to update old phone..just be honest ok..new phone for market strategy…i will better buy nexus series after this..playing a phone update to customer feel like abusing

  • Himanshu

” I m Happy that SONY released the keyboard update for Xperia S,
But not at the cost of 4.2.2 ”
    :-(

  • mohnish

ya buddy same from my side………!!!!!!

  • Micheal Archer

Not entirely true, but reasonably accurate. As SE, they were crap with updating Android (SE Xperia X10?), then with the Arc their policy was to push updates to the older flagships as quickly as possible and then bring that update to their newer devices. Then they dropped Ericsson and released the Xperia S. Then they changed their policy to updating the newest flagships first and leaving the older ones for later. The Xperia S owners were most affected by this (partly because they were anticipating an update schedule similar to SE devices up to that point). That being said, depending on your location (USA perhaps?), updates don’t flow quickly regardless of how fast Sony works, so American Sony device owners always feel left out.

  • lol

sony will update this phone until newer phone replace L. but i expect 4.3 in L because Open GL 3.0

  • Chinmay Nawathe

hey its quite surprising that having snapdragon s4 plus processor, adreno 305, 1 gb ram still xperia l not get 4.3…… hope for 4.4

  • Vitali

In the last time I think that they improved their support I think that they really hearing us sometimes… xD
and Yeah most of the people in this blog in only talking about xperia S!!! Are you blind sony?! xD

  • BD

XSP! HELL YEAH! WE RULE :)

  • Pedro Cunha

I love my Xperia S… stock 4.1.2 its great, and i think its a ok to be done for Sony. The device is turning 2 years old… in this type of business i think it will be stupid for Sony to go futher with updates… this mean i m think to go for a new device… mybe a Z or Z1 if it goes below 500€… till that day my Xperia S running 4.1.2 its a great phone, mybe the best dual-core Android smartphone ever!

  • Ani

    http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_sp-5364.php
This page says that xperia sp is planned for android 4.4 kitkat.

    Check under os in features.

  • Sudhindra Kumar

Apparently, FYI Sony Xperia S was the first SONY made device and a FLAGSHIP.. And THE MOST SOLD DEVICE OF SONY till date.. There are lots of users than any other phone, only phone that was sold like that was Xperia Z.. Xperia T came early because of James Bond Movie release, hence Xperia S became an ex-flagship so early.. Every other OEM gives a new flagship once a year, and sony give 2 a year.. There is no life for SONY phones just like before in SONY ERICSSON.. Xperia T,TX,V and S were of same price range, not much of a difference..

  • Sudhindra Kumar

Well my friend.. Even i own a SXS.. But u don’t know the whole story.. They gave GB when ICS was already in every other OEM flagships.. Then gave ICS after 4 months.. Wasted almost more than 1 and half year to get us a stable JB 4.1 when 4.2 had been around all other flagships and mid range phones.. And finally stated Qualcomm doesn’t provide drivers, so no more than 4.1.. How fair is this huh?? Trust me, this will be stupid if they play this game this way.. No one will go to SONY again.. They are losing more customers day by day.. They had a small loss too.. A Fact..

  • shadaab

Please launch 4.3 jellybean on sony xperia l . i am the biggest fan of sony

  • luigi

    what about xperia c?

  • puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk

It’s reached the 1500 supporters so what’s now?..

  • Emil Oskarsson

well you’re right about that too :p

  • Christian

Please Update my xperia arc lol

  • Daniel

What I expect for android 4.3 on xperia tx:
1.Newest Media Apps —- WALKMAN, Album, Movie app
    2.Better battery life, Stamina Mode
    3.Bravia Engine 2 (X-Reality as well?)
    4.Better ram management
5.This one is my personal choice— can sony make dual lockscreen like android 2.3—- u swipe up or down(Like no password) and then appears the pattern or passcode thing—i really hate how you wake the screen up and then see the pattern thing and you don’t have shortcuts, it just looks bad to me lol
6.Hopefully the same camera as xperia z1 —- i really really want the timeshift burst mode(hope tx can handle it)
    7. bug less (this might be hard) i don’t expect sony to release 4.4 but at least give us the best experience, that’s why we bought xperia phones

    Please Sony!

  • Micro

    oh, poor you

  • Micro

    that’s how kids work
they first learn to handle a phone (play games, recognize logos, blah blah), then are forced to learn how to actually read at school
just the last thing doesn’t come so easily

  • Danny

My family and I currently own the Xperia Z, Xperia TX, Xperia SP and the Xperia L in use. 3 out of 4 ain’t bad, I’m using the Xperia L myself, though happy with the recent 4.2 JB update, there are somethings I don’t like about it, like how apps shortcuts on home screen, those not in Device memory, always disappears after every power restart.

  • Xperia fan

I have just upgraded my Sony Xperia Z and Xperia Z Tablet to the latest 10.4.B.0.460 based on Android 4.3 JellyBean MR2. It looks cool although a bit sluggish & occasionally not responsive :(

  • puky :3

    Xperia S too!!!

  • josesl16

It’s good enough anyways, if anything, I just want some minor bug and performance fixes.

  • Hesham Ali

Please sony i have sony ZL THIS PHONE IS AWSONE all that i need on the next update the battery consumption to be less and fixing auto brightness to be more accurate.

  • Xperia fan

I just upgraded my Sony Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z to 10.4.B.0.460 based on Android 4.3 JellyBean MR2. It looks cool although UI can at times be somewhat unresponsive :(

  • Night of Xperia Z

Same with me, I have my Xperia SL, I choose SL rather than S because it has faster CPU, on July, I bought my Xperia Z, but I don’t have sold my SL.

  • JEREMY MITCHELL

While waiting you could try the Exr-ming Z1 custom rom. Search xda and you’ll find it. It’s a fantastic Rom and it uses the Z1 camera without any bugs. I’m using the xperia t version and timeshift burst mode works great. It works on locked and unlocked bootloaders

  • surya

If there is no 4.3 jellybeanupdate for xperia s. I will go for other phone mean Nokia Lumia

  • shawn

Xperia p is the best of Sony and one of the most successful phone of the xperia lineup so must update it to. 4.3

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    (6.2.B.1.96)

  • Matteo Viterbo

Give at Xperia S dignified death, upgrade to 4.3 together XV and XT!!!

  • Jaissal S

I still have my Xperia S which is waiting to be sold. I want to keep it up to date though. I have not received the latest build update though! That could be due to my data provoder – aka 02. I received the Keyboard update obviously.

About the update to 4.3…What are the main changes? I know about the user profiles, but I believe that they are more for tablets.

Given that it runs on a ST-Ericson Novathor u8500 chipset en the company doesn’t exist anymore, I seriously doubt that there are drivers available for that phone for anything past 4.1. Also it’s a rather old mid end phone, so apart from the fact that it’s technically not possible, I doubt it’s even reasonable to expect a phone from the 2.3 era to get an update to 4.3.

Guys, I know you have no idea about your smartphone and just shut up, you won’t notice any big differences. The problem here about Xperia 2012 series is mainly the chipsets . The S and Ion uses the snapdragon s3 which drivers are not compatible with 4.1 and higher. So shame on Qualcomm. The rest(U, P, Sola and Go) uses NovaThor by Ericsson which I suppose that it is not supported anymore.

But I really hope SP and maybe L, M will get 4.4. But hey guys, more money more service. The L and M is weaker than T.and now im using xperia sp .

plz if possible make 4.3 for xperia p

SONY should withdraw all xperia S from market and replace the chipset with a newer one… It’s totally a SONY fault, that they used an older processor for their flagship device when newer were available.. They didn’t even comply with their 18 month update policy… Even xperia L is getting updates :@
    Fed up with SONY…
