Android 4.4 KitKat coming to Xperia Z, ZL, Z Ultra, Z1 and Tablet Z

by XB on 7th November 2013

in Android, Featured Content, Firmware, Sony Tablet, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1

Android-620x577Sony Mobile has confirmed that the Xperia Z series will be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat although no timing has been given. It confirmed that the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 will get the latest version, although do not expect it in 2013.

Strange to see that the Xperia ZR does not make the KitKat list, despite running the same hardware as the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. It is also a shame to see that the Xperia SP is not on the list, given that it sits just under the flagship Xperia Z series and no doubt has the power to handle the OS. However, as Sony describes this list as the “first raft of Xperia products that we’ll make Android 4.4 Kit Kat available for“, fingers crossed we’ll see some additions to the KitKat portfolio nearer launch.

  • Adrian M

Yeah but Android 4.3 in December for Z- Series. And T,TX,V will also become 4.3.

  • Ani

So sp has been excluded :-(

  • infinity

No xperia SP? This must be a joke, the phone is 7 months old and can run 4.4 easily.. if they confirm this I will sell mine and never buy anything from sony again, word.

  • Nek0

One more reason to buy a Xperia ZL right now!

  • Ani

    Same feeling here.
They should not have done this.

  • Joh Kevin Manabat

They lack manpower. If they had enough people, considering that 4.4 is now optimized to even 512 MB low-end phones and the 18-month period for firmware updates, even Xperia E can have 4.4.

  • Arian Rivers

    I love you Sony!

  • If you look at the list, all they’re calling out in their high-end line of devices. Maybe to encourage sales, that’s what they’re announcing. Today’s post about 4.3 was the first official announcement about the T, TX, and V getting 4.3 and when (next month.)

  • Revanth

Don’t do it… None off the promotions are available for zl that are available for z series

  • P9

Sony best, hope this sony 1st to release.

  • osin17

I think they will give 4.4 for SP. this message talks just about Z series

  • axa xa

Wht hell.. F### u Sony.. Xperia zr hardware n bloody no 4.4? 512 ram supported and u ppl 2gb ram phone 4.4?? Wtf

  • Ani

We all must mail to sony asking wether they consider sp in future for 4.4 or not?

  • Xyor

    “FIRST raft of …”

  • hong

Luckily i have my “The most expensive phone of sony” not “the best of sony in a smart phone” Im talking about my phablet :)

  • axa xa

Guys please help.. Xperia zr users.. Help.. Write Sony.. 30k INR for a phone and u dont give it 4.4?? Never Sony again.

  • Akira Y? (??)

If you read the article, it’s stated that the Z series (except ZR) will get the updates FIRST. ZR users might get the update but not the same time as the phones stated earlier. Keep your hopes up! :)

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

No ZR? its the Exact mini version of Z then y not ZR even 4.4 can run on a 512mb ram device then y not on this 2GB Qualcomm S4 Device? thats awkward. do i need to shift from sony to LG nexus? hell no.. so pls sony dont make us disappointed

  • Rene Pedroso

    Sony Mobile news on 4.3

    First up, Jelly Bean 4.3

We’re pleased to tell you that we’ll start rolling Android 4.3 for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month*.

We also mentioned that a few of our products would be jumping software version – so, we can confirm that Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V* will be upgraded to Android Jelly Bean 4.3… also from next month.

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

me too disappointed as i have a ZR

  • Vitali
  • Rene Pedroso

Great comment, I think everyone is not reading the whole release

  • jumbo3220

Sony blog said 1st batch to get kit kat is Z series…..means there will be a 2nd batch which SP, ZR, L and more (may be) included.

  • panagi?tis

lol. i was thinking to buy sp but now i will go for s4 mini. it is a shame that they can’t support their phones fast. and sp is s4 pro not a normal s4 or s3 (snapdragon)

  • Akira Y? (??)

that’s my point! :) some users here are already thinking of the negative stuff… :)

  • vigneshprince

yes u guys are right! they cant provide update for every mobile at same period of time! we should atleast wait!

  • Pingback: Anonymous()

  • vigneshprince

Z series gets the update first, then may be next its time for S series! plz be patient!

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Shame on you Sony haha.. I mean they can update these devices easily, Guess they are trying to save money out of it by not updating the previous flagships and the parallel phones like SP.

  • ?????? ???????

I’d like to see this update on my old SonyEricsson Xperia Pro…. Ah, just a dream.

  • Ali Ahmed

im really regreting that i didnt get LG nexus 4

  • infinity

Yes, I read that.. the thing is, they are already showing us the devices that will be left behind, the SP and the ZR should be on this list, if they don’t even have a date for this first batch of updates, god knows when the others will get it..

  • Akira Y? (??)

Guys! Please understand the announcement thoroughly. If your device isn’t included in the announcement it could be that you’ll get the update later than the others. Wait for further announcements. :)

  • Gilberto

Even Xperia T can run 4.4. no question about it. in the future i will get samsung instead

  • Rodney

It’s the 1st batch… that means those devices will get it first, not that other devices won’t get it. LEARN TO READ PEOPLE!

  • rewolve

    fingers crossed :)

  • Dyaa ibrahim

    wow i have Z

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

You guys are seriously comparing Nexus 4 to ZR.. really? -.-

Latest version is not everything, it must be fully functional and stable too!

  • ravi

SP deserve at least 4.4 . if SONY don’t want to update it then bye bye sony . after being a loyal fan from long time i really don’t want to buy any xperia again . terrible experience with SP and no future update just after 6 month of launching.

  • Jerry Berglund

They dont say what phones that “not” will be given kitkat yet. So many phones might get it. Maybe it can be the case that Sony now look (KitKat says to be able to role on very limited hardware) for other phones in their profolio that can get it. So maybe those phones who didnt get the 4.3 will be able to handle 4.4 instead. But well, its a probably not the cause, but hey I can at least dream. :-)

  • Utsav Shah

All the users who got irritated by xperia S users, now you have started whining :D

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

wait don’t give your ears to rumors. once u r a Sony fan its hard to leave Sony, :-)

  • lucasarg

    What about xperia L, SP, M, M Dual, C???… D:

  • Jesús López Sotelo

The fact that it can run on 512MB doesn’t mean it has to be done in older devices.

  • qqq

RIP Xperia SP 2013-2013… Thanks sony

  • Joh Kevin Manabat

Xperia E is not even a year old.

  • AmazingTabZuser

i read all the comments.. my god.. i guess people stop reading when they read “not on the list” sony just said “FIRST raft”. agghhh.. sony only knows

  • qqq

Sad because the SP and ZR are very good devices for the price… Sony’s fault that they barely advertised them

  • Aaradhayay Gupta

4.4 for. Xperia sp is a must…. I’ve been using it for 4 months nd its one of the best I’ve used…. Sony achieved near perfection with this phone.. But now not announcing it for the new update…is a shame… Sony ppl shud clarify wat they meant with first raft comment…!!!!!

  • Tanmoy

well, no matter how new is E and how much RAM it has.
it is clocked by a S1 chip, which matters :)

  • xPnoyStar

To all who writes negative things:
..”FIRST raft of Xperia products that will get 4.4….”

Sony seems to be slow, but at least they update more phones than ..

  • reventon

There appears to be a rumor that 4.4 update is coming to Xperia Z1 on 7th November (Today), can anyone clarify that?

  • Hans-Robert Wagner

I owned an Xperia T 13 months ago. No one speaks about the T, this phone hasn’t got last 3 android version updates.
I’m pretty pissed off. Sony builds wonderful smartphones but I never would buy one again.

  • Doubleyoupee

I guess they have to priorities.. makes sense. I still think the ZR should’ve been in the list of the first batch.. I mean it’s a high end phone and it was released AFTER the Z! Also, It’s has the same hardware only a different screen so it can’t be too hard to make 4.4.

Btw I have a ZL, not ZR… just my 2 cent.

  • pain six path

It’s first raft, not final,so be patient?more phone will get kitkat after these phones.

  • DeLorean75

My ZR is faster than a Z, because of the lower resolution. That doesn’t mean, I expect anything from Sony.

  • Mac

    TRU DAT!

  • neville chidawanyika

  • lastguru

ZR actually can use the same firmware as Z – just change a few config lines and voila: you have a new firmware (

  • john

Bad sony, how the hell can u.leav zr in 2nd raft… Y dnt u put the z and zl in 2nd raft then…
stop beimg loyal to sony as they neva learn from thier mistake..

  • [csizor

If SONY is updating Xperia T and V to 4.3, I’m sure Xperia SP and L will be updated to 4.4, due to their newer chipsets and the Android KitKat’s new project: Svelte. Great.

  • Ruslan K

    ZL – 4.4, ZR – no ? WTF??

  • VIVA

    Sony bad 4.4 sp?

  • Marco Rocha

    I love Sony!!!!

it’s always like this with sony, i bet the update will be canceled
    like android 4.3 for T
i’m very surprised that they annouced 4.4 for Xperia Z?!
    I think it’s gonna be forgotten like Xperia S, Ion, U, Sola, V, SL, E, C, ….
    what a shame

  • m sacha

I freakin hate how long it takes to get updates on Android. Seriously thinking of going back to iPhone

  • [csizor

  • m sacha

    Facepalm your mum faggot

  • People are idiots…

  • Uh, why not? The ZL is a really good phone even without any additional updates.

  • Umar Khan

you got schooled boy…… HAHAHHAHHAHHAHHAHHA iphone toddler

  • infinity

No, that doesn’t mean that will be a 2nd batch and that the SP, ZR and L will be included, don’t try to read between the lines ’cause there’s nothing to read.. that is what we guess and hope that will happen, if they really are planning on updating those devices they should say it. In Q1 2014 or sooner they will launch new low and mid devices, that will replace the SP and the L, then the updates are over, the next batch of updates will probably go to them..

  • Umar Khan

i love sony tablet, but i have z and in tablet bought nexus 2012 and i think it was a good thing as i now get best of the both worlds

  • Bill Clinton

Hopefully my Xperia X8 also gets Kit-Kat ;-)

  • m sacha

    Haha how exactly douchbag?

  • Naail Zahid

I hope this update brings the new camera algorithm that Z1 got for the entire Z family as the camera really sucks in low light for all the other “flagships”.

  • Clarence Alvarado

These devices are very similar to each other, known to have 1080p full HD screens. This will be easy for them to design since all of them falls under the same XXDPI category.

I assume, again I assume, that there will be second to none with Xperia ZR, SP, and also T, TX and V to carry Android 4.4 Kitkat as they are under XDPI category.

Under Xperia L and Xperia C is HDPI category, which can also be possible, if ever but not majority of percentage, to go 4.4.

  • Hambeast

Rumour has it SP/T/V will be 4.4 as well but that’ll be last update. No idea about M/L.

  • 3rdflyleaf

Are you telling me that Xperia *ZR is not included in Z series??? What??

  • 3rdflyleaf

The fact that Xperia ZR is not included in “Z” series shocked me.

  • x-periance

Looking 4ward with what will sony bring into this new version. :-)

  • The Z is already replaced and still getting updates… Also by that logic the SP shouldn’t be getting 4.3 either…

  • Cristiano de Oliveira

I really hope xperia L is included on second raft. #hopefullly

  • Kiruba Reddy

quick pls 4.4kitkat android version sony xperia z sir

  • infinity

Its different, the Z is a flagship device and the Z1 was just released.. I didn’t understand why the SP shouldn’t be getting the 4.3 update, by the time it lands it will still be the best sony midrange device, but when the 4.4 gets to the first batch, it probably won’t.. so it makes perfect sense.

  • Kiddo

Why xperia ZR not on the list?? it’s also from Z series -__-

  • Reynaldi Sutrisno

I’m glad that Sony hasn’t forget my tablet Z.. :’)

  • imparanoic
  • imparanoic

    zr will get 4.3 first,

So, you meant 2nd raft will be more Xperias will get KitKat including 2010 Xperias e.g. Xperia X10 etc? :O

My Xperia X10 mini too, perhaps ;)

SW updates will not fix that, HW is the blame! Change your module sensor to Lumia1020, it should be ok ;)

  • hans

at least 4.3 is headed your way unlike S4 mini, so why rant? Wait for it then 4.4 will come in the future. if not, it’s just a simple bootloader unlock and CM installation to fix your never ending thirst for the latest Android version

No,but other phones like sp,zr,l,m likely to get it,for example Xperia t was the first phone got 4.1.2,after that many phones got wasn’t bad for t,t is s3 rival, both came with 4.0.4 then 4.1.2 then 4.3.

  • TK

Sorry guys , Xperia Arc is only 4.0 =)

  • Alvin

This shows Android manufacturers just don’t want to update some devices, rather than hardware limitations.

One of the problems is from Google. They launch new Android version too frequently, and the manufacturers don’t have enough time to let every device update. On the other hand, they don’t want to waste time, including Google which is not willing to update Galaxy Nexus to 4.4 in which hardware requirement is not high. For Xperia ZR, it’s a tool for Sony to boost sales in summer. When summer has gone, they don’t think they need to provide support.

I don’t mind low range phones have less upgrade. But people regard Z series as high range, it may be a trick when I buy ZR which the update is not as good as others. And Sony has the terrible record of flagship support. Xperia S I am using is the real example, in which the stable firmware came after one and a half year launch, and users never get a more update Android version. Even they do better on Z, I won’t buy Sony again, may switch to HTC or iPhone.

don’t believe rumors. just wait 4.4 jus released. why hurry for it? let the engineers make it for capable devices it may take time they already announced 4.3 for SP. wait patiently

  • Night of Xperia Z

Ya, quite surprised for me too.
Because I thought 4.3 for Xperia Z,ZL,ZR,S,T,TV etc. and 4.4 for Z1 and Z Ultra.
Maybe, Xperia Z is ex-flagship for Sony Xperia, so my theory is 4.4 Update for Xperia Z is a respect to it.

  • goldenblls

    Fantastic news! Thanks Sony.

  • Netto Dashius Hexareus

Tablet S uses Tegra 3 instead of Qualcomm so you have to wait till nVidia supports Android 4.4 on their SoC…

  • Netto Dashius Hexareus

Seriously, Sony had just announced its first raft of supported devices and you’ve gone that far? Be patient man, maybe SP is on the second raft.

  • JEp

I know that feel bro. :/

  • pars71

    what about xperia E , M and L ?

  • Luis Urquiza Palacios

    fuck yeah!!

  • lol

maybe M/L got up to 4.3 because sony need to sell new hardware next year

  • Micheal Archer

Sony did not explicitly say “The Z Series will receive 4.4 first”, they said “the first raft of Xperia products” are: Xperia Z, ZL, Z1, Z Ultra, Tablet Z. That leaves a lot of room for them to add more products (ZR, SP, etc) as the hardware and as time allows them to optimize the software for those devices. Considering they are working to optimize on 5 devices at once while also working on 4.3 for 10 devices…I mean, I know that a lot of the work can be applied to multiple devices, but that’s still a lot of devices. Not to mention all of the carrier crap that has to be loaded and tested as well.

  • ipatz

    Will it be supported?

  • Micheal Archer

Sony is trying to use the update as a marketing tool as well. If they explicitly state that all these older/cheaper models will be getting the update, they won’t sell as many Z1s. If they limit the announcement to only recent/high end devices, their sales of those devices will jump slightly. Once the purchases have been made, THEN they may announce older devices.

  • Rob

Didn’t see that anywhere in Sony’s message, where did you read that?

All it said was what devices would recieve the upgrade first.

  • seth

Any news on the T-mobile US Xperia Z C6606? Still on 4.1.2 so clearly this doesn’t apply to all Xperia Z models…

  • Ani
This page says that xperia sp is planned for android 4.4 kitkat.

  • Vitali

    S !

  • xConjo

Aaaaaaaaand this page doesn’t say anything about it.

  • Ehsan

Why Xperia sp doesn’t get android 4.4 ???? Sony???? I disparate you!!!! I think Xperia sp get kitkat because sp newest than z and made on 2013 ,but you don’t upgrade this strong phone to kitkat . I shamed!!!!

  • Ehsan

Yes, I think to going to sell my Xperia sp,,,, :-(

  • Gaurav

I have faith in Sony 4.4 for zr

  • Ok, so the Z1 (which has been out for a little while already in some regions) is not a current threat to Z updates, but “potential midrange” releases in Q1 are an immediate threat to midrange updates?

  • qqq

“it’s just a simple bootloader unlock”

Sucks that I happened to buy a SIM locked device, because sony sim locked devices are literally impossible to bootloader unlock! Unless you live in spain and want to send your phone 1 week away so sony unlocks it

  • Bluerain

So what if they don’t update ther devices? Still you can use your phone right? Stop QQ’ing abnout updates. The important thing is you can still use your phone in your daily life. Geeezzz.

I know, but as XperiaBlog said, it’s strange that the Xperia ZR does not make the KitKat list, despite running the same hardware as the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. :justsonythings:

  • 3rdflyleaf

You didn’t get my point. Even XperiaBLog said “Strange to see that the Xperia ZR does not make the KitKat list, despite running the same hardware as the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL.”

I know it could be a minor mistake that Sony just forgot to write ZR in first list but for the users it means a lot!

  • Micheal Archer

The very first thing I noticed while using the XperiaBlog comparison function is that the Z/ZL has a 5 inch screen at 1080×1920 and the ZR has a 4.6 inch screen at 720×1280, so they are not running the same exact hardware. Furthermore, why should the ZR be on the list for the FIRST batch of devices to get the upgrade? Why can’t the ZR get it a month later (for example)? This also allows them to market the Z, ZL, and Z1 as KitKat-ready devices, increasing sales of these devices.

  • 3rdflyleaf

Exactly, It’s they’re marketing strategy, which is I don’t like. Giving update for the Later device or more famous device even if the older or the *not so famous* device is capable of it.

For example the Album. Walkman app update.

I am worry now, after sony stopped the support for xperia 2012 line to J.B 4.1.2 while i am planning to have xperia z for next year, would it be the same old qualcomm story for the next 2013/14 line? I love Xperia but the matter is the factory software update

    KitKat to LT26i!

  • kachan64

The xperia s, is different hardware than most newer devices. Of course it can’t run Android 4.4, but you can have the launcher.

  • franklin

have you used this phone ? its very fast and runs everything.i have even tried kitkat roms,i runs better than some other devices.but not all things work becuase its not official.and kitkat needs only 512 mb ram,so xperia s is more than capable of running android 4.4 and i guess future versions of android without hiccups

  • franklin

i agree, same has been done to kill xperia s.even no album, walkman or movies update ever.2 updates for xperia s with bugs and killed off :(
