Xperia Z1s gets sized up against the Xperia Z1

in Rumours, Xperia Z1

Xperia Z1s sized up against Xperia Z1Want to see how much smaller the upcoming Xperia Z1s (Z1 mini) is up against its bigger brother the Xperia Z1? Well the picture below gives you a good idea. It is another leak of the global version of the Xperia Z1 mini, expected to be called the Xperia Z1s with model number D550X. The annotation on the image appears to suggest that the Xperia Z1s will use an IPS display, although we wouldn’t hold too much credence on that assumption at this stage.

Thanks Anurag and Ben!

  • Phat-t

    That viewing angle doe!!

  • мимокрокодил

it seems there is no lack of contrast while viewing at angle comparing to z1

  • Lolzer Rocks

I don’t think so, unless Sony is out of money. Quantum Dot LED (Triluminos) is a good tech to invest in despite still in experimental/research state, and I can see the day it overtakes OLED.

  • filo9011

    Perfect size

  • Basharca

Another awesome product from Sony, looking forward to it! Sony has a habit of making things better on their mid to high end phones and don’t ask me why! The xperia P for example had a better screen and camera than the xperia S. Same goes with the xperia V vs T. So, I indeed have high hopes for the Z mini.

  • Feanor

The picture does suggest an IPS panel. Maybe Sony is contractually bount to TN panels for 5″ whereas they can opt for a better IPS panel for 4.3″. It would be a bit strange to have the Z1s bettering the Z1 in display quality but considering that the Z1s will be the only veritable iPhone competitor in the market, it sort of makes sense.

  • Makiz

This will give iPhone 5S a good kick in the ballz!! Perfect specs, design and size!

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

Well, it is IPS like the Z Ultra. Still can’t understand why Sony gives Z Ultra & Z1 S/F IPS but not Z1

  • Sen. Rockie

The display is looking good! Better than Z1 in my opinion (based from the pic above)

  • Vhan Modders

    Z1s have a lovely display than z1.

  • cs098

looks like the z1s has the zu screen tech Very good.

    Hope it’s not screen lottery.

  • Peltruquin

Bezels still look ugly, I wish the screen was almost full size like in the Xperia ZL

  • sony fan

Guys its amami display on z1s.

  • Pingback: Xperia Z1s a Z1 mellett - fotó - Sony Xperia Blog

  • Kathryn

To me it looks quite okay though I prefer smaller bezels too like the ZL, but not like the G2. G2 looks so ugly and gay.

  • jem

i hope they add a camera dedicated button

  • cs098

if you look carefully at the pic, they do.

  • Peltruquin

Yeah I have the ZL and I love how the display takes over the entire screen, looks neat!

  • Phat-t

Yea big bezels due to the waterproofing. I wish they made another flagship that isnt waterproof so the bezels are smaller

  • Amir

looks like a better display, not washed out like the z1. colors keep their true tone in the angle.

  • Kathryn

    And no lousy waterproofing-flaps.

  • Harut Hajin

SORRY FOR POOR ENGLISH , If You want to know Why , The all Xperia Z and ZL displays in stocks used in first part on Z1 making , and in new part of Z1 has better displays , You must 100% sure that Sony already Premium Brand and it not made for all , its mean if You are Sony fan , You must love it .

  • AA

I wish they could get rid of on-screen buttons. That’s probably the only one thing I don’t like about the Z1s. I’m still getting it though, once released.

  • Rinneh

All have and ips display, ips is not a guarantee for perfect viewing angles

  • Gitarooman

triluminos suppose to keep them ahead of LCD, Crystal LED is the one that suppose to overtakes OLED.

  • Sh’ Dynasty

For anyone wondering the Xperia Z1 C6906 model does work on AT&T’s 4G LTE Network. I dont it’ll matter but my Sim Card inside did come from another AT&T phone.

  • Guest

The pictures look like 5″ phone and a 7″ tablet.

  • raxxta

    Better display= better reviews = better sales…should be a ‘no-brainer’

  • ruba

I hope that come with IR Remote like ZL….. pleaseeeeeee
I will not buy the xperia Z1 because it hadn’t this feature

  • Zeke

Wonder what the Sony XPERIA Z1S weighs considering the Sony XPERIA Z1 weighed 170grams. – ouch!

  • Tech Gospel

I’d like to see it compared to the Xperia S and Xperia P for size. :)

  • Battal Aljadei

    it’s weight’s 140 gram .

  • Battal Aljadei

IPS screen that’s good move SONY

  • Billy de Fretes

sony should launch it before iphone 5s … damn.. Z1s looks so sexy

  • max

MIght as well get an Xperia V…same size and weighs 20 grams less and is due for an upgrade next month.

  • Phat-t

Launch it before iPhone 5S? Where do you live bro! LOL

  • Billy de Fretes

in your mom house… i forgot to mention iphone 5s launch in indonesia

  • Itze

Anyone knows about an micro sd slot?

  • P9

now compare to iphone5S bezels. No one knows? :3

  • P9

hope to see aluminium version too! now most leaks are already out, but where is WALKMAN phone? (chips, 2speakers…) love ffor life!

  • shah

if it is like the z1f it does hav a slot =)

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

With KitKat, that doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore.

  • shah

Well, if this is true (which is a little bit odd) then sony does listen and keep up to the newest tech, though this might make the price closely resembles its bigger brother.

  • Little Monster

It’s almost perfect! So pity there’s no DAC for listening music.

  • mWm

Z1 sucks, Z1 is clearly not the best of Sony, not the best of me, it’s also the most disappointing smartphone from Sony.

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood

on-screen buttons + big bezels …that’s really ugly.

  • Zeke

OK lets assume that’s correct and we go one step further.

I’m now holding a Sony XPERIA Z1S form factor in my hand now.

    I have a Sony XPERIA S

    Size: 128x64mm ( Z1S – 127×64.9mm )
    Weight: 144g ( Z1S – 140g )
    Screen: 4.3″ 720×1280 ( Z1S -4.3″ 720×1280 screen )

So, this is what a Sony XPERIA Z1S will be like in the hand and screen size/view.

  • CyberPunk 2097

Totall Agree! We want bezels like Xperia ZL, Those big bezels make the phone looks pretty corny.

  • well

    you never see an iphone……..

  • Utsav Shah

I wonder if sony really put Triluminos in Z1!

Look at that small baby, gorgeous display like Z ultra!

    Such an unwieldy phone.

  • Purnama

you cant judge the display from a pics of camera… you should see it directly by yourself…

  • Alex

Why standart Android buttons (home, back, menu) drawing on screen at all new Sony smartphones? It look ugly, especially in full-screen games.

  • rexperia

    So…..??????? Problem???????????????

  • rexperia

How about bezels on your face? Is that look ugly too???????????

  • Benjamin Rodriguez

And way less powerful with a worse camera/SoC/battery? And a worse design? And a flap for the headphone jack? This phone is quite similar to the V in form factor, but only that, it’s superior in every other regard by a mile.

  • Benjamin Rodriguez

Yep, just remember that the Z1s uses on-screen buttons unlike the S. So you get a bit less space.

  • sisore

Calm down bro, what’s up with you? xD

  • sisore

    Don’t buy.
Is it so hard for you to decide?

  • Mac

yeah actually it’s a pretty big deal for me too. IR Blaster and purple then my wish come true x).

  • Mac

yea n Don’t forget that xperia v only have 8GB internal and no camera shutter button. Reason why I bought the Acro S instead.

  • Mohammed Khired

i think it’s has IPS panel in the display…which is cool

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Thank goodness, Finally they are using IPS displays which is better than the old freaking tft which they were using ages ago., phew hats off Sony. I give you credit for this. Battery life is gonna be so much better on this phone if they really use IPS.

  • rexperia

I’m ok, just sick to those who are keep complaining about bezels and on screen button, now please explain on screen button on a nexus devices? What do you say??

  • sisore

I not the type who talks and complain much before I actually get it in my hand. Sure I would like it a lot more if the side bezel is a bit less, but I think even in it’s current state would be OK for me.

But like I said, hands-on experience above all :D

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Finally IPS, now the phone’s battery life’s gonna be so much amazing and good thing that they left their old tft panels….

  • shah

lets wait untill it is official ok =D

  • Battal Aljadei

you can read all main specification of Xperia Z1f/s on SONY JAPAN official website (use google translator or google chrome browser)

  • @atWidget

Why with SOnt there is always poor display when the phone have 5″ (Z, Z1) and awesome display when the phone is not 5″, smaller or bigger (Z1s or Z Ultra). They don’t know make good screens with 5″ ?

  • Mohammed Khired

htc one is big screen and it’s IPS..

lot of 5 inch phones with IPS

  • sisore

    He is referring to Sony

  • xperiaDROID

I wonder why Sony didn’t use IPS on the Z1, if the Z1 has IPS screen, it will be the best of Sony.

  • @atWidget

yeah I mean SONY… sorry for “SOnt”, mistake…
With Sony when the screen is bad it’s always on 5″. But Xperia S, ZU, ZS… good screen… weird

  • xperiafan324

I think the bigger bezels are actually due to the Aluminium frame instead of glass-fiber polyamide. Anyway, it doesn’t bother me, the phone’s a real looker, definitely the best looking “mini”.
The Verge said that the screen exhibited the same viewing angles as the Z1, so I doubt that Sony’s moved on from e-IPS just yet, I’m just hoping that in 2014 Sony finally says bye-bye to these cheap screens and opts for one of their JDI LTPS IPS screens. Boy, that’s a lot of letters.

  • xperiafan324

Actually no. All Z1 displays will keep using the currently used e-IPS screens until and unless Sony PUBLICLY re-releases it with a better display, there’s no conspiracy to screw over early adopters.

  • xperiafan324

I think Sony would make their waterproof phones quite more appealing (convenience-wise) if they added wireless charging to the next flagship Xperia, they already demonstrated Qi standard wireless charging that’s twice as fast as what’s currently possible, would be great if they put it in their Z flagships.

  • Persian User

    Release the beast ASAP
And of course release it on every U.S carrier to give Apple and Sammy a run for their money.

  • Sen. Rockie

What if Sony gets rid of the on-screen buttons and place touch-capable buttons on those huge bezels like on the Xperia S/Acro S? At least it will serve a purpose.

  • Ghayyath El Masri

maybe thats what the text in the pic is saying : IT HAS IPS! :P

  • Ghayyath El Masri

Im excited for this phone and hope there will be the lime green version. But I still miss the designs of S, P and U..and the off-screen buttons

  • Guest

I wonder how many complaints about display quality Sony will have to hear before they decide to do something about it. Come on Sony, are you not listening?

  • Battal Aljadei

As i’v read on the internet, SONY’s having a problem on making a water resistance display of 441 ppi pixel density with IPS technology, the available type’s TFT which’s on Xperia Z and Xperia Z1, and that’s why XPERIA Z ULTRA and Xperia Z1S has better screen, because both of them has a lower ppi pixel destiny which’s around 344 ppi, let’s hope they solve this on 2014 or make a new screen technology works on all conditions .

  • xperiafan324

That’s a very good point, Sony could have contracted suppliers to provide them with 5″ e-IPS screens, and due to the persisting contract they used it in Z1 aswell. I just hope next year Xperias go with Z Ultra-like-or-better screens with LTPS TFTs for better battery life.
Honestly the bad viewing angles are becoming even more of a sore thumb as time passes by because even all the Chinese flagship phones have better viewing angles than Z/Z1, and those things cost less than $300 with shipping.

  • @ramakrishna543

Lot of bezels this is why I hate my z1 I don’t understand why sony is expert in making bezels phone should be compact, and LG G2 has better camera, I’m disappointed with z1 :(

  • zaimi

Please make your beautiful phone with off screen button+small bezel then sell to us

  • Karri

    dx39 SO-04E or SO-02F… now that’s a tricky decision to be honest.

  • josesl16

I’m gonna hope they use 720p display instead.

  • josesl16

    Higher production cost.

  • shah

better camera? it was wayyy kick out by sony in all matter during a comparison done by PA. (not saying sony’s camera is the best). The bazels as some users pointed out maybe work as a space to place our hands when holding the phone. LG G2 is a greate phone, but to be honest, the button at the back, is just plain awkard IMO

  • josesl16

It’s almost the exact same design shrinked :o Want want want!

  • Amir

where did you read that? it doesn’t make sense.

  • josesl16

It’s already amazing how small the phone is, given all those bleeding edge components inside.

  • Rodney

Bezels… for the love of god Sony, why the bezels ? I know it’s not that important, but it’s kinda ruining otherwise a perfect design. Please, reduce the bezels in your future phones!

  • Mint

Why did you even buy it if you “hate” the Z1? gtfo troll

  • John Connor

Yeah! that sounds reasonable. Btw I hope sony will redesign the UI as well, Now it looks so damn cheap, mess and nothing unique.

  • 123

    z1 mini not z1s

  • yeye

    then what is it?

  • Feanor

No, it’s not reasonable, because these buttons would be placed very low like on my arc which is very uncomfortable for the thumb. It’s much more ergonomic when there some distance between the bottom of the handset and the buttons.

  • Feanor

But all the youtube videos for the Japanese version Z1f show also great viewing angles. It’s weird to have the Z1 left behind but the Z1s is the only real competitor to the iPhone (similar size, similarly top specs, premium build), so great viewing angles and a feeling of screen being printed on top would really give the iPhone a run for its money.

  • shah

    z1 mini ===> z1f (Japan Version), z1s (international vesion)

  • WhyWai

bring it out already! I wan this phone!!!

I just think it would look ugly, and mess with Sony’s whole black-slate, omnibalance design. It is a little sad that it does take up part of that 5 inch screen, however if the quality of the entire screen was like the Z Ultra then that would be forgivable.

  • Mohammed Khired

    on-screen buttons to me it’s better than touch-capable buttons….

it’s a nexus experience , but maybe they should increase the screen (and the resolution) little bit for the on-screen buttons so i can enjoy the 4.3 perfectly

  • Krasimir Argirov

The screen is much better than the one on Z1 and it is IPS like it saus it seems.

  • Guest

    here’s another one :)

  • Battal Aljadei

here’s another one, looks more sexy then it’s big brother :)

lol dont use google translate to translate directly
“Tri” in japanese pronounced as “Toriru”, just so happened that “Tori” means birds, that’s why the mis translation

  • Zeke

I was just looking at that too.

The XPERIA ZR is the closest fit to the XPERIA Z1S I’ve found thus far.(size, weight)

The ZR has an old S4 SoC with an Adreno 320, but priced very competitively now and still a good phone.

The XPERIA S, an older phone. has the same form factor too.
Sony better release the XPERIA Z1S soon, or it may lose out to another phone with a newer SoC and Adreno 420.

  • shah

that is an issue too. since qualcom announced that the next gen 420 will come out early next year. probably htc m8 would have it on? so, yes release it soon, but on the + size it may cause this device (hopefully) to be a tad cheaper due to an “old” soc and gpu

Placing capacitive buttons on the bezel would not affect the Omnibalance design. The entire screen is glass therefore so is the bezel. The buttons would/could illuminate when needed and disappear when not. However, I do agree with Feanor that ergonomically it would be a pain to use. Try using the S4 you will see what he means. Personally I think the onscreen buttons are unsightly, they reduce screen real estate and should disappear more often than they do.

  • Guest

    How so?

  • Colby Leong

I think the whole point in putting the buttons on screen was purely for looks, and making them more responsive. In a design sense having those buttons disappear with the rest of the screen when it’s off makes it look much better. Sure the lights could disappear from the buttons, but the outline would still be there and that’s what I think would mess with the whole look. It really is the fact that the screen could have been better, and the Z Ultra is evidence of that.

  • anonymous
