Sony China press event set for 14 January 2014; Xperia Z1 mini to be unveiled

by XB on 3rd January 2014

in Rumours, Xperia Z1

Sony China 14 January 2014Sony will be out in force at next week’s CES 2014 trade show in Las Vegas, showcasing all of its new wares across its vast portfolio of televisions, cameras, laptops and of course, mobile products.

It is increasingly looking like that the Xperia Z1 mini is a dead cert for a global release as Sony China has revealed it is due to hold a press conference the week after CES on 14 January 2014, with strong hints that the Xperia Z1 mini will be the star of the show.

The teaser image has four colours (yellow, black, white and pink), which are the four colours that the Japanese version of the Xperia Z1 mini, the Xperia Z1 f, released in Japan at the end of last year. Interestingly, if you look at the official press images of the Xperia Z1 f below, you’ll notice that they also come in the same colour order as the Sony China invite.

If the main tease for Sony China’s invite surrounds the Xperia Z1 mini, then it makes us think that we will not see any higher specced phone at CES. This would be in line with Sony’s recent comments that it sees the Xperia Z1 as being the main flagship as we move into 2014. This could set us up for a major new Xperia reveal at MWC in February.

We’ll have to wait and see of course, but we wouldn’t be building up any hopes for any big new flagship reveals next week. Sony’s main press event will take place on Monday 6 January 2014 at 17.00 in Las Vegas. To find out the time of Sony’s CES 2014 press conference in your time zone click here.

The Xperia Z1 mini will share most of the same hardware of the Xperia Z1 including the Snapdragon 800 chipset, 20.7MP camera, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and IP55/IP58 dust and water resistance. It differs by offering a smaller 4.3-inch 720p display, 2300mAh embedded battery, a chassis measuring 65 mm × 127mm × 9.4mm and weighs 140g.

    Nice teaser

    Nice teaser, always unique

A little disappointed that they wont have any new higher speced phones especially with the galaxy s5 coming soon

  • lucasarg

    Maybe that’s the Xperia E1 … XD

  • djabag

The coolest of them all will be the Sony NW-ZX1 -35th Walkman Anniversary model.
Super nice old school Sony build quality combined with Android and sound quality of the future.

  • jake

Becasue s800 is the highest spec for now ?

  • KenC17

Why would you be disappointed. Every time Sony releases early, they end up falling behind the competition, using older hardware, or what’s available at the time. By slowly moving it back, it gives them the same time window to release it the same time as the S5 at MWC and not giving their opponent an insight on what they will deliver.

I’m really excited for the Z1 Mini even though I won’t be able to afford it. The yellow actually looks really nice as well!
I wonder what the successor to the SP will be, will it stick with the LED light bar, or go more towards the Z series as its quite round compared to them, looks kind of ugly next to the Z tablet, they don’t fit well.
Finally, is there any other kind of Sony blog that doesn’t focus on phones? Like Xperia Blog said in the article about new laptop and tv range, are there any equivalent blogs to them? I wish there would just be a Sony blog too, that focuses on all Sony :)

  • cs098

While the z1 mini does feel like a too late scenario, I do’;t think it is. While it will be a little outdated you have to realize two things, a smaller screen means it can stay sharp at a lower res and becasue theres a lower resolution, there is more power from the s800 that is not used compared to a 1080p display.

There’s a reason why the z1 mini is one of if not the best preforming smarphones out there.

  • m sacha

Although this is interesting, I’m quite excited for the next flagship phone

  • Sand

Hopes this can replace my old friend xperia S

  • Colby Leong

Agreed, if I had money I’d buy it, of course there will be people that complain about stuff like bezel size. And when it comes to the Z1 they have a very valid point, as does Sony for making it the way they did. From the pictures it does look like the phone is a little thick.

  • JHMBB2

I’m fairly new to how these tech shows work. I just think it’d be fun to see what we can expect later this year, not that we’ll get the phones by the end of the month, but it seems how these shows work. Being in the US we tend to get Sony phones when they are outdated, like the Z1 which was announced when? Like August, the following week the world, minus the US, gets releases.

So my mindset is, “Cool a Sony phone I’ll get my hands on by the end of the year. This is what specs we’ll be seeing by that time!”

  • Michael Hofmann

Last year Sony announced the Xperia Z in Vegas but it was only available in Europe from MWC onwards, after which a lot of the hype had died down, and between launch and going on sale the HTC One was announced, to avoid this it makes sense that Sony announces its 2014 flagship at MWC and launches almost immediately. If this is the case I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a new tablet from sony at CES though either Vaio or Xperia, they wouldn’t want two flagship mobile devices launched at the same time.

    14th.. that’s my birthday, I’d love such a present ;]

  • Micro

    lol xD

  • boosook

Outdated? The first phones with the snapdragon 800 have been released only three months ago! This phone will sell like hot cake. It’s powerful and will remain powerful for two or even three years. The camera is very good, build quality is top notch… I don’t see how we can consider it outdated! :-) The fact that in Japan it’s outselling the iPhone (and the Japanese really love the iPhone) says it all!

  • cs098

Well when it is released internationally, it will be a little outdated compared to the snapdragon 805 and 1440p displays. Never said it was a bad thing though.

And I definitely agree with everything else, I’m pretty happy with the z1f outselling the iphone.

  • Carlito

Where is my SP 4.3 update?

  • Tim Aries

Seriously I wish anyone could answer this question now haha

  • Daniel Moros This is what sony said…

  • Micro

about that last one.. I was wondering too what if such a blog started anywhere, all Sony, not just phones. But I came to simple conclusion – official Sony site tells practically everything about non-mobile things, there is not much to discuss about them (unless you need to talk for a months about some BT audio receiver like BMI10 or about a smartphone tripod.. those won’t get any newer android ;D). And it would end the very same way as on all other blogs – people will always dominate it with crap like “omg where is my 4.3 for SP” under every single post and trolling “oh f**k sony samsung better ur all stupid”. This subject (mobile) is hot, I can’t imagine much talks about Hi-Fi sets, memory cards, headphones or idk, HD Cameras (mostly because ppl can’t use those things to whine on blogs.. yet.. ;D).

  • Colby Leong

It would only be outdated to people that are seriously concerned with having the fastest phone available. This phone should go down in the history books as a true “mini” version. Everything that it’s big brother is in a smaller form factor.

  • Colby Leong

Exactly, Sony pegged this phone for the end of 2013, early 2014. There would be no way to put the 805 chip and keep the same schedule, plus there would be a flood of comments complaining about it’s late release.

  • Colby Leong

Living in the states and being a Sony fan means buying un-subsidized phones from online dealers, or hoping they land on a network. It was surprising that the Xperia Z went to T-Mobile. I think before then AT&T got the T, and Verizon got the Play.

  • cs098

My point exactly, while it’s true that it’s a little outdated, I also know it’s a non issuse, and will be a beast of a phone regardless.

actually sony has released a mini version with flagship specs before too. The Xperia ZR was the same as Xperia Z but with smaller 4.5 inch 720p screen. but for Q2 of 2013, 4.5 inches din’t seem quite like a mini. probably why the ZR din’t attract as much attention as the Z! mini.

  • starkiller306

the screen is gonna feel a bit small for you, since it has on screen buttons.

    As You wish:
    Z1 Mini
    E1 and E1 dual
    What more?

    We wait to see :)

  • roeshak

Z1 mini!! Not interested at all. Very boring in fact. It looks like Sony may very well be moving their flagship launch to September from now on. Not really surprising because they’ve struggled to get themselves ready for H1 especially on the software front.
2014 may very well be the year that I move on to another manufacturer. I’m not going to wait until September and I don’t like the z1 at all. Very ugly phone in my opinion.

  • rotten is an all Sony site, but it’s mostly PlayStation and Xperia articles and movie reviews though.
I hope there will be more Sony news after CES

  • sealplayerz

it’s different because Sony mobile phone product is from Sony Mobile Communications AB (formerly Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation and the other Sony electronics product is from Sony Corporation, the electronics business unit and the parent company of the Sony Group,

people always confused Sony Mobile with Sony Corporation itself

  • z1ffan

Oh sony. Please let this beast out in the world!

Don’t buy, don’t ever read news about it.
    Just ignore it :)

  • Colby Leong

Agreed, but I feel that the ZR was more of a combo between the Z and ZL. Smaller, dedicated camera button. I think the Z1 embodies that true “mini” concept.

  • I’ve heard that they’ve ran into a bug (for SP only) that they still unable to fix. Probably something to do with the hardware
