Confirmed: Xperia Z1 Compact uses two different display panels

IMG_9232Earlier this year, we reported that the Japanese version of the Xperia Z1 Compact (Xperia Z1 f) was sourcing its displays from two different manufacturers: Japan Display Inc (JDI) and AU Optronics (AUO). The AUO panel appeared to be darker than the JDI panel and it also seemed to suffer slightly from viewing angles. However, contrast and colour reproduction on both panels were very good.

At the time, we questioned whether the Xperia Z1 Compact would also use two display manufacturers. Well it is probably no surprise to learn that the Xperia Z1 Compact does indeed use two different displays. A small poll on XDA shows that currently close to 60% have JDI panels and 40% AUO panels. It is worth noting that people are largely pleased with either display, although some complain of blue-ish tints.

I hate it when manufacturers use two (or more) different parts, whether it be screen panel or anything else, and not make it clear. What makes it worse is the fact that one is better than the other (even by a bit). :*)

  • xperianer

is there a quiet good source to get informations about sold smartphone numbers?
im curious how much they sold of the xperia z1 compact. i see nearly no promotions/merchandising in germany^^

also i remember 2weeks before the global release i was in some electronik shops and asked when it will be released in that shops. many told me they not know if it will come, some never heared about it.

    just curious

i decided not to buy it, wanne wait the lg g2 mini, then i will compare them and check the prizes. 500euro is too much, i think^^

  • wim den boer

How can I check the panel info?

  • if they do this (swear word) on the z2 i will keep my z1

  • raj

Whatever it is, the phone looks GORGEOUS

    With top notch specs….

The screen looks amazing in reviews and all
    and Benchmark breaking Performance

It is a true winner for SONY and for any Mini, as it is

  • Martin Ambre

just release it in India ….

  • Giannikosmo

Install Terminal Emulator from Google Play open it and enter this commands:
    cd /sys/devices/mdss_dsi_panel
    cat panel_id
Or just go there using a file manager..

  • Renato Laporte

Jesus H Christ, every time a new Xperia o a new Mac is released they complain about 2 different display manufactures…

Really, if you see some problem in your screen, just return the phone and if you don’t like the more realistic and less saturated colors, just buy a S4 or Note 3.

  • Kurt Kobaine

WHY u want to change to z2 when the specs is almost the same as z1?

  • screen/speakers

  • Amir

all mobile companies use at least 2 different manufacturers for display panel. i doubt it will ever change.

  • Amir

all mobile manufacturers use at least 2 different diaplsy panels from different manufacturers.

  • Kris

I have the JDI one, what about you guys?

  • ShiroiTaka

    JDI too just checked :)

Will Sony stop shitting us with display lottery?! My fking Z1 has the worst possible panel and you still have the face to put Triluminos Display at my box… Shameless Sony, Shameless….

  • dr1xer

I wanted to buy this one yesterday, good thing I’ve buy a nexus 5 instead.
Always the same mistake with Sony, plastic cover, now different panel hahahahahaha

  • pixlas

This is risk assessment. Of course they use several sources. First of all it is hard to find one supplier for that many components. Second of all, you dont want only one supplier either. Because then you Can’t press the price down.
    Its that simple.

  • 3rdflyleaf

    Typical SOny.

  • Elias Fazel

WHY sony always use two or more different display panels !?

  • gunboat_d

I hate it when people with no experience in manufacturing criticize common manufacturing practices.

  • sisore

Why do people complain when both was supposed to be as good as the other one?
This is real world business, not in your perfect dreamland.

And AFAIK it is not only Sony who use such thing as using 2 different display manufacturer.

  • pixlas

Don’t forget to tell Samsung to pay you for the comment. Yeeez Sammy, quite it already. It is so embarassing

Of course thr s no one supplier BUT at least they can order SAME display not just buy display panels with different quality and …

  • Berg

“although some complain of blue-ish tints.”

Is there no white balance setting on the compact?

  • dr1xer

    stupid fanboy

  • Berg

    or just one line:
    cat /sys/devices/mdss_dsi_panel/panel_id

  • sony1

Too many cooks spoil the broth.

  • Berg

I’m sure the same goes for memory/speaker membranes/glue/microphones etc. etc.

You can’t possibly expect millions of devices to have the exact same components in them..

  • Mac

    AOU, white phone (Sweden)

  • sony1

Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill

  • Mac

    Yes there is

  • JHMBB2

Have you guys read the comments over in gsmarena regarding what a true mini is? Apparently the z1 compact is a compact not a mini because it doesn’t have worse specs than the original. The hell they smokin’ over there?

I’d love to see this phone in person in the states, I may actually consider it. Battery life alone makes it worth it to me.

  • Patrick Bateman

haha, using the command lines from the pics I checked my Z Ultra’s screen supplier
AUO, they kinda do make awesome displays, keep it AUO Sony! <3

  • Patrick Bateman

Z2 is coming, and yes I agree that they should discriminate the phones using a worse panes by a lower selling price.
tbh by getting a Z1 u should’ve known what to expect in display department and I doubt the place you bought it from does not have a return policy :)

  • Castor

why do they need two sources of displays when they can[‘t even sell that many phones to worry about supply?

  • two different manufactures BUT same quality panel.

  • Timbo1

honestly the display isn’t that bad, even the off axis viewing angles have been greatly exaggerated. I find the screen far more realistic than say Samsung or LG. There is some improvement that is needed like the HTC One SLCD display, that is pretty nice, a smidge oversaturated but still a top notch screen. I am a fan of IPS displays though.

  • cs098

Atleast this time it’s not one is super crappy and one is okay.

In this case both are great with slight trade offs from both panels. Darker panels have deeper blacks which I like. And any tint issues can be fixed with the built in calibrator.

  • Carlo

Why is everyone after the apple iPhone display’s viewing angles? The reason for iPhone having good viewing angles, is the fact that it has a tine display, and sharing such a thing with that size would get messy

  • somebody

So it’s gonna be like Xeperia S with yellow thingy. All you need is luck to get the best one? hmm

its old news and has been confirmed since day 1, though this is a win win situation, whichever panel you get is still great. Blue tint or whatever can be adjusted thanks to white balance setting.

  • xperianer

yeah you are right, its shitty
but i wrote my comment before i saw any confirmed specs of the lg g2 mini ;)
    so…blabla :)

  • Brad Williams

This is hardly world beating news. The XZ had 2 different panels.

  • AppleandSONYlover

Most of the people here are stupid. 1st of all most mobile phone manufacturers have 2 or more suppliers for their display. Even apple the world’s most profitable premium phone maker uses lg, sharp and jdi displays. Why is it such a big deal if Sony uses different displays? As long as it is ips lcd it should be fine. Of course color temperature may vary but that also happens with Apple devices. It is expected because of different manufacturer. I currently have XPERIA Z1 and yes it not IPS but its not that bad as the media and SAMSUNG paid reviews/fans claim to be.

  • AppleandSONYlover

Just to inform you AU optronics also creates display’s for SAMSUNG, LG and APPLE. So before you claim that your device has superior screen just make sure its not made by JDI and AU OPTRONICS. >:)

  • xperiafan324

There doesn’t seem to be any quality disparity between the two, the only differences are those already expected between any two units of lcds (slight white balance differences, max. brightness by a few 10 nits or so etc.)
Here’s to a job well done Sony.

  • Ren

though this topic is for Z1c,
I’ve checked my Z1(Malaysia) and I found it to be sharp renesas 10809 video…
I thought it is either jdi or aou?
please shed some light on this thx.

While the screen manufacturer might make a difference to some people, I think more people are going to be disappointed with the cheap plastic panel on the back… the one that Sony, and every reviewer said was glass.

    Auo, Denmark Black z1c

  • Michael Reiche

I had the Z1 compact in my hands at a local shop, and could compare the display to my ZR. The Z1 compact was not as bright as my ZR, but the viewing angle was a bit better. Being a little annoyed by the limited viewing angle on the ZR, I would not trade it for that Z1 compact though.

  • jonasbjork

I changed my Z1 to a Z1compact and I could not be any happier. Only tech difference is probably the screen, but it is good enough for me on the Z1compact. Battery time is better than on the Z1 too. Usually I have 30-40% battery left in the evening, and I am using my phone alot during the days.

  • raj

    I know
It s released in India also
