Xperia Z2 Low Light_11If you want to get an idea of the Sony Xperia Z2’s camera prowess in low-light situations then check out the full-resolution photo samples below. They were taken on the night streets of Tokyo, Japan with a pre-production Xperia Z2 running 17.1A.0.504 firmware. All the pictures below were taken at 20.7MP resolution, therefore it’s perhaps no surprise to see noise in the pictures.

However, RingHK that took the pictures said there was a real noticeable improvement in focus speed and colour accuracy over the Xperia Z1, especially when taking pictures of nearby objects. They also saw more accurate white balance and metering. Check out the pictures below and click on each one to enlarge to their full resolution.

I am sold, when is it coming out again?

  • Damon

Those low light condition pictures sure look impressive

  • Ghareeb Saeed

Impressive! Still not convinced, they said the same thing with the Z1 and I can tell you for a fact my Z1 isn’t a much of a WOW thing when it comes the camera !! I’m a true sony fan, but Sony always find a way to let me down!

    gr8 pics

Z1 is only a step behind Lumia 1020, I hope Z2 will bring the gap closer and make Z2 the Lumia 1020 of Android.

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

no way thats so impressive ..still there is a little of noise but i think it’s normal because there is so much details

  • Kurt Kobaine

This time they wont and the picture above is the truth. The impressive about this thing is we can see less noise in low light and the picture was taken at full resolution wow

  • Jer

    Amazing, i already preordered mine, can’t wait…

  • GeeksEmpire

    very clear
hope to see even better quality in retail packages.

  • Deki

The photos looks cool, but as the Z1 they too are very noisy on the edges and thru the center. When you zoom a bit, you will notice. I get the same feeling as for the Z1 photos.

Z1 can make amazing photos in low light conditions, you just need to put the right settings.

  • Aniket Koyande

Early leaked images of low light conditions are always very impressive
but the retail unit we get in market doesn’t deliver up to the expectations
happened with Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Z
I myself own two of them except Z, but I’ve handled one of my friend’s Z & it was not as impressive as advertised :(

  • Dexter Moregan

there is a noise but the detail of photo is still impressive

They all look stunning! I’m eager to test it myself!

  • Okazuma

Low Light? In tokio downtown? are you kidding me? XD

  • Castor

not happening. oppo will be launching their 50MP-toting Android machine.

Similar experience to me; T300, T610i, W810i, XPERIA Ray PERFECT, XPERIA X1 slow as shit/horrible keyboard, XPERIA S bad camera, XPERIA Z lifting back/poor camera. I’ll hopefully be getting Z1C soon, even though they have faults, they’re design always pulls me back.

  • Castor

blur here blur there blur everywhere. what’s wrong with xperia cameras? they all have that signature blur in parts that are not in the center.

  • Ghareeb Saeed

    Exactly! my point!

  • Tadija Djurovic

Excellent images. I think the lower resolution noise was less noticeable. Otherwise, I see some pictures and exceed 10mb. lol

  • Ambroos

I think people have completely wrong expectations sometimes. I have a NEX-5R, which has a brilliant big APS-C sensor. Combined with a large-aperture lens it’s still difficult to get pictures that look this good in low light.

You need to take into consideration that this is still a tiny sensor with a tiny lens, there’s only so much you can achieve with that. I personally think these pictures look brilliant. You’re not supposed to be viewing them at 100% zoom, and that’s not what they’re tuned for either. They’ll look great on your phone, computer and even on your TV at their regular size.

  • koolman2

I can take better photos by my Z1 in the same condition, I think the settings in these photos are not well.

  • John

Well, yea. But that´s not only problem of Sony. I´ve seen some samples of S5. They look stunning but a little bit blurry at the corners. This problem is usually caused by the lenses. (I mean if u mean this problem).

  • Nikola Maruni?

It is obviously a well lit area, but that can sometimes cause an even bigger problem!

  • Castor

so the proud G Lens mark is nothing but a gimmick? I love sony but please they have to fix that blur. they’ve been touting blur-free photos in their marketing materials but i’m seeing a lot of blur in the samples.

please don’t let this be another z1. i tried defending that device online. i’m embarrassed i did that.

What’s the last picture of? :S

Oh wow, I actually really want to go to Japan and these pictures are making me so jealous >.<

I don’t know why people keep lambasting Sony smartphone cameras. Yes the superior auto mode is horrible but in manual mode with appropriate WB settings, they do ok. Better anyway than any Samsung or apple device I’ve compared them to. The aggressive noise eliminating algorithms do tend to damage detail once you start cropping but I still put the Z’s camera ahead of the s4 and iPhone any day.
The z2 looks like a real step up from the Z in terms of photography. Something the z1 never managed to deliver. When you take into account the class leading display, thoroughly refined design, improvements to the camera, added memory, stereo speakers, faster soc, you’ll see that it’s no minor upgrade from the z1. In fact, the only similarities are the design language, and camera specs. I think the differences between the z2 and z1 are much greater than those between the z1 and z. I think Sony deserve the credit for the z2.

  • Might be an umbrella storage/locks

  • Faisal Armand

I always thought that there was no major flaw with xperia z1 camera except for the huge problem that people expect it to outperform lumia 1020 and a freakin DSLR.

Come on dudes even with its flaws, Xperia Z1 camera pretty much beat any camera phone in the market except lumia 1020 (even that, xperia z1 only lost by a bit)

And from comparisons everywhere on the internet, Xperia Z2’s camera is more detailed and has less noise than xperia z1 itself which is already great

  • RealityCheck2013

I think people(like me) :D think they can just take a photo quickly & it will always come out perfect. Er NOPE :D

  • Guest

It is impossible to pair a large aperture and a small number of lens elements (to keep things compact) and expect perfect corner sharpness.

  • Castor

well the galaxy devices take uniformly sharp photos.

i really hate it because based on what i’ve been seeing samsung seems to have figured out how to properly do things. why can’t sony do it when they’re the camera experts?

they shouldn’t have gone for the higher MP count. they could use the corephotonics dual-lens design (2 13MP sensors) to obtain more detail without sacrificing sharpness on the sides.

  • Castor

artificial light is usually classified as low light. fluorescent and LED lighting don’t facilitate the taking of good photos.

  • cs098

mp does not equal to great pictures.
The 1020 was awesome not because of it’s 41 mp but because of it’s insanely large sensor.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

They did the same thing with Z1 and it turned out to be the worst camera phone lol.
I am not saying that their camera module sucks, it’s just the Superior Auto and the entire software needs to be updated well.

  • Castor

we don’t know much about oppo’s camera specs yet so there’s no use arguing:) but i definitely agree that MP does not equate to great photos. the iphone has proven that.

only thing is that sony will now lose its claim as the android smartphone with the highest resolution camera.

PLEASE sony, tap on corephotonics+qualcom tech for the z3 or your flagship for h2.

i heard “htc the all new one” will be using camera modules from toshiba and not the one introduced at MWC by corephotonics.

sony should use the corephotonics setup since it’s their 13MP BSI sensor corephotonics is using.

  • Rinaldi Priambodo

Why superior auto is important? Because most of people don’t want to configure manually WB, ISO, exposure value etc.
People will be like “oh, there’s a good object, lets take a photo from it” “oh wait, hold on a sec, i need to configure WB, ISO etc” “damn, the object already gone” …. I know manual mode in xperia devices able to produce great image, What’s the point of having superior auto but need to change to manual mode?

  • cs098

If you look at their previous devices, oppo’s camera is okay but not on par with samsung or sony.

So while this is interesting, I have my doubts.

  • Persian User

Details are not good when we zoom in.
I really expected more than this from Z2. Hope this is nit the finalized unit.

  • Stephen

+1 to that, my z1 in low light using superior auto gives me lots of noise and light streaks,
it should be called inferior auto in all fairness

  • Battal Aljadei

This’s high-light not low-light, and it’s full of noises even closer to the lights !!!

  • Guest

    omg that’s genius if true!

  • grav1ty

Honestly these pics are not impressive.. i own the XS, XZ and saw many pics from Z1 and what i can tell you is, that Xperia S still makes the best pictures when it comes to details @zoom.
Every XS owner will agree with me and non xs owner should google for samples.
I don’t know what they did but definitely the image processing got worse since Xperia Z.

  • Mohammed Khired

  • John

I wish there would be a cameraphone that i can change the aperture and exposure…

  • Timbo1

Everyone complains about zooming on a cell phone camera. You aren’t supposed to zoom with a non zoom lense. Sure the digital zoom could be better but it should be obvious that you aren’t going to get ideal pictures on a digital zoom system especially without a tripod.

  • xperiacamsucks

Oppo’s Find 7 leaked photo samples look promising! I’m still not convinced with Xperia Camera phones, they’re still mediocre despite all the hype.

  • Chris

    Oppo? Are you kidding me?

  • Rikard Jerner

the automode on xperia is really bad even in daytime it sux so freakin hard… that actually pushed me away from sony this time and i got a lg g2 which is the best i have had so far… but then we have the problem with a slow cam instead… zzzzz ;)

  • yes

Sony has one of the best camera sensors and lenses . Too bad that the camera software isn’t that good which makes the Xperia Z look worse then my HTC Desire. Come on Sony it’s time for re-engineering!

  • Castor

    no you in particular. hahaha.
let oppo have their limelight. if this 50MP camera is indeed true and the promo photos they released are accurate, it’s bound to be an awful camera. OPPOl camera! the device is very thin but the MP count is excessive. we’ve seen the supposed samples and they’re not great.

    When will we learn???

Those kind of pictures aren’t made to be seen in 100%… The same goes for the Lumia 1020… When you try to see the picture in 100% you will see noise and deforming.

And no, with the Z2 you can’t zoom in with the same level as the 1020, it’s just a hardware thing, the 1020 uses twice more pixels to combine in a 5MP picture.

The Z1/2 uses “only 20MP” to make a 9MP picture.

So the Lumia has a better camera? Yes, but as down side, you get a wired “oreo” in the back, and it isn’t comfortable to use the phone when it’s laying flat on table…

For me the Z1 takes great pictures, and so will do the Z2… Just learn how to use it’s camera.

20,7 MPix pictures are bigger than your A1 city billboards you know? As comment above said, you don’t zoom them to 120%, that resolution makes them sharper on FullHD tv screens and PC monitors… that’s the point! Make a 2.0 MPix picture (really accurate 1920×1080) and compare with taken in 20.7 on full HD monitor filling the frame – looks better on screen doesn’t it? Z2 also won with Ap 5s and Gal S5 in Barcelona in night shots without flash, there’s a movie on YT showing that Z2 can recognize up to 75% more detail in dark than other this year’s flagships.

  • ?ukasz

When we go back in times of SE cybershoots and compare them to this years Z2 I must say there’s a big scale improvement.. In my days the phones made photos good for mms not to be put on FB or Twitt. Now you can make photos that look sharp and detailed and put them everywhere on web not being embarressed.

  • Deki

I have printed photos on picture paper from my old Xperia S phone that looks awesome! I’m now preparing new for printing from my Z1.

The photos are awesome! Yes, they are not meant to be viewed 100% zoom, but we all want to zoom in a bit; just out of curiosity.

I love using the Manual mode, play with the settings to capture the most wonderful pictures and share with the world. You can make really cool photos with your phone! You are holding great camera smartphone in your hands!

Here you can check my photos:

    Hope you’ll like them. :-)

Very interesting thing I just come across at – I could choose any number of pants and shirts (from the list) at very heavy discount rates (up to 75% off online) – more we buy more discount – I never seen this before.

Studio lighting consists of cfl’s all the time, usually around 5500k. I’ve taken many studio shots including portraits all using a light box run by a 5500k cfl. All come out great.

  • shortb

well you specified the temperature. that’s not the typical temperature of street lights, indoor lights, neon lights, and LED lights in tokyo.
