HTC One (M8) v Xperia Z2: Display and speakers head-to-head

by XB on 25th March 2014

in Videos, Xperia Z2

HTC One M8 versus Xperia Z2HTC has formally unveiled the much-leaked One (M8) and we know that most of you want to get an idea of how certain features compares against Sony’s current flagship Xperia. Well our good friends at Btekt have done the hard work for us with a couple of videos below showing how each handset compares on the display and speaker side.

On the screen comparison test, Btekt found that the HTC One M8 had better contrast, although the Xperia Z2’s display was more saturated and appeared to be less “washed out”. On the speaker comparison, the HTC One M8 speaker volume has been increased by around 25% versus its predecessor and putting it in line with the Xperia Z2. Btekt found that the HTC One M8 was clearer and sounded better in most tests. Click through for the full comparison videos.

it is better sound in htc one m8, nbut the fact is z2 i waterproof, it has the best sound for a waterproof phone I:()

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

HTC One M8 speaker has distortion. o.O

  • Kacho_ON

I thought that HTC would have the better speaker and screen but it seems the Z2 is closer than i thought it would be. Sony did a great job and i’d much rather have the Z2 over the M8 considering it’s waterproof and has the bigger screen/battery.

  • Utsav Shah

Shut up & take my money for the Z2 !

  • Marco Sobrevilla

The only thing I’d say the HTC One 2014 has over the Xperia Z2 is that it comes with 32GB of Internal Storage and the Z2 doesn’t.

  • Raj Singh

So tempted to buy the Z2…

  • hansip

Honestly For the best of the Best of sound, i’d choose the new HTC One, but with all things considered (water proofness, not much time to hear your music in front of all people, plus that noice cancellng earphone) the Z2 is definitely the winner all round :) really nice Sony, now how about bringing that improvement to Z2 Ultra? :D

Seriously? You’re using smartphone speakers on listening music? Maybe you’re also using laptop speakers.lol. Sound quality is a thing of headphones and amps. This are dumb comparisons. Z2’s speaker should be the decent sound for a smartphone not the one trying hard to be bassy.

  • cs098

proves that live led is not a gimmick

  • Basil Kronfli

Not the case for all variants – the HTC One (M8) has 16/32GB. No doubt, you’ll be paying for the larger capacity version if you opt for it. Still, nice to have the option.

  • Lunkz

    And it supports MicroSD.
32 GB + 64 GB or 128 GB, great to Watch your HD Series or Movies.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

True. Something I wish doesn’t fade out in time. MicroSD is important to lots of people.

  • Nidou

    Z2 FTW!

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

My laptop has JBL audio with 3 subwoofers, you jelly bro?

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Both of the devices support MicroSD.

  • Quark Gluon

    Leave that to Z2S.

  • Tjaldid

I wish my brothers S4 had this good quality, he uses the S4 all the time on speaker and it is so annoying because it has such a bad quality speaker, this is also good if you need to share content show someone else content.

  • xperiaz6603swe

I have today tested the m8 damn about the sound but sony is damn to but m8 little bit clearer sound but z2 i love u :-D

  • Mohammed Khired

the difference between Z2 and HTC M8 is :

    1- design (both perfectly beautiful)
2- water proofing (Z2 gets point for that)
    3- screen size (user preference)

    otherwise they all the same…

  • Xperia Z2 = . . .
    HTC One = :::::::::::::::::::::::::

    I think good performance. I’ll buy XZ2

  • Z2 buyer

    What are you actually saying?

  • lightninglion

Them Taiwanese make good phones, better than anything that comes out of South korea but Z2 is the phone to get this year!

  • Giannikosmo

Even Z1 wins HTC ONE M8!

  • Zimae

that all not true mate. htc speaker is front on phone. Xperia have smooth and better quality than htc. Htc good but Z2 almost perfect.

  • z3_buyer

lmao! this comment just made my day. spot on, man, spot on.

  • Hadi AZ

Well I gotta say Z2 is tempting but I hate what sony does with DRM keys when you unlock the bootloader so I will wait to hear how Z2 handles such matters. The bad thing about Sony products is that there are always intentional flaws in each of their products so no matter how much you pay you can’t have a device which is truly perfect!

  • DrazenDodig

Z2 definitely shaping to be the phone of 2014.

  • Salem Dee

stupid HTC.. they have one of the best looking device and now they make it freak.

it was so easy for them, just change the goddam ultra pixel with 13mp sensor, add SD card support, enhance battery and boom there you go!

great victory for Sony! keep it up guys..
that what happen when you listen to customers

  • Micro-Jubei

I’m have a “hunch” that the Z2 will get a Google Play Edition……want the original, but if there is a GPE for the Z2, i’ll get that one ASAP

  • Z2_buyer

You’re obviously easily pleased old chap, suggest an iPhone instead of the Z3 ;)

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I am agree with you because in daily usage we don’t have many chance to use our mobile phone’s speaker. Well it will disturb people around. So talking about the sound quality from smartphone should be focus on audio chip, amplifier.

  • Deads

Seems i am the one that has to tell you. It doesnt matter what sticker is on the laptop the sound still sucks. Its simply due to the size limitations that laptop speakers have to deal with.
Yes it is probably better then the speakers in other laptops but it still sucks.

  • crosskill

agree. those who listen to music from their laptop speakers are not enjoying the best music possible. theyre better off buying cheap earphones.

  • Deads

I agree. Most people that use their phone speakers for music are the people most of us hate. The people that crank it up and use it to listen to bad music on the bus or train.
yes there will always be a phone that has better speakers but its still rather bad sound quality.
A better audio chip, amp and other tech for headphones/plugs is what i myself prefer.

  • crosskill

and all of them support sandisk’s 128GB sd card

  • Vincentius Phang

i need to give applause to this “new feature” ? “version” ? of the disqus discussion board

  • crosskill

but the htc one new would still probably be better with power efficiency. tests from gsmarena and phonearena show that the 2600 battery is great enough to come close to the note 3’s battery longevity.

  • HardyHarHar

And both of them has google’s restricting on SD Cards.

  • HardyHarHar

HTC also removes DRM Keys on their devices when you unlock the bootloader lol! In fact almost all devices with DRM Keys got that removed upon unlocking the bootloader! It’s just sony use DRM on their software while others doesn’t so don’t notice it. Try using a movie with DRM license on a unlocked HTC One and see if it will play.

  • Stanley08

LOL! Ethan! We meet here too!! :P I have JBL speakers on my lappy too… Awesome stuff! :D

  • Stanley08

As good as i think Sony is, your comment is pure ‘Fanboy’ :P

  • Stanley08

LOL! This post just went FULL RETARD. :P

  • Danny

Sony made some of the best phones hardware, imo, but they shoots themselves in the leg with the softwares. Delayed, buggy updates. fix it properly, then Sony can rule the market, that with a little help with marketing.

  • rvjaywaks
  • guy with guts

Somebody tip this video to gsmarena i bet they’ll not post the news. Same happened with note 3 and z2 comparison. They hate sony like anything.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Damn and this guy takes the phone out?

  • kirakira

why don’t they show an actual photo? that’d provide us a more practical comparison.

  • Jumbo

I seriously laughed at this comment… SO HARD XD Playing innocence, a new way for Samsun’k’ fanboys!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Its an Hardware thing…. Thumbs up to that

  • Colby Leong

So both phones were at max volume, but did the M8 have the beats turned on? Same for the Z2, was the Clear Audio+, and the xLoud (if it has it) turned on? Because having the Clear Audio on for my Z1 is a world of difference compared to when it’s off.

  • Jay Kim

m8 doesnt not have beats installed. they sold its share from beats audio

  • Colby Leong

    So what about the Z2

  • xperiaz6603swe

    That I’m saying

  • xperiaz6603swe

No it has not i tested the m8 today z2 is not far behind. but m8 had a little bit clearer sound than z2. Z2 has also two front speakers,, and has very awesome sound to to be a waterproof phone

  • xperiaz6603swe

But this phone is not passed as waterproof phone if the phone get Waterdameged then u not have warranty

  • Alexandru Florin

well, you just can’t live with such a poor camera..so if you are on android, xperia z2 all the way

  • xperiax10.awesome

why you guys always want to defend SONY – i know its good to be Sony fan but if something else is good – ACCEPT IT !!
HTC M8 screen is still better than XZ2 (XZ2 is less washed out) with so much tech in hands Sony cannot make perfect screens – what else you expect !!!

  • Hadi AZ

At least Camera app on other manufacturers does not require DRM like Sony. I am currently staying locked cause my z1 won’t get good pictures with UB so I am hating Sony for that..

  • theskig

    Battery? ;)

  • hansip

Well bring it to the pool then :) that way we’ll be more convinced. ;)

  • Marcy

you never had a toshiba with harman Kardon speakers then… the quality is supperb highly comparable with 60 to 80 pound (100 to 120 dollars) headphones

  • rexperia

HTC is not so popular in my country which is Indonesia besides that the after sales of HTC is quite bad too and the price is really expensive, only few people know and use HTC in my country.

  • izzet karahancer

i don’t either but still smartphone speakers are important to me
    why?
cause if you are playing games like asphalt good a good sound quality and bass makes the game waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more enjoyable

  • izzet karahancer

thats true i have a pioneer a1 speaker i use but a friend of me has a high end asus laptop with bang and olufson and a subwoofer it’s true that the sound of my pioneer a1 speaker is way better of course but still if you would ask me i don’t call him crazy if he would listen to music from his laptop

  • izzet karahancer

    the explaination
the front of the m8 where the speakers are placed is a little empty and whole and cause the metal body the sound will come out more acoustic and with a little bit of an echo what will make it sound clearer and that means on classical music the m8 should win but on pop music or when it comes to bass the z2 should

  • Midleo

one more thing, that on Z2 the songs tested not on Walkman player, but on an additional…

  • Jay Kim

well z2 has its own sony stuff as you stated clear audio etc.
and as midleo stated yes they are using stock music players since its more even. htc has its own music player and so does the z2.

  • sdfadf

Z2 is only a little taste of what we’re getting on the end of the year…

  • afewfrgar

camera? UI? Storage (Big win for HTC here, I wouldn’t care, if we were allowed to install apps to sd without root…)?

  • Hosam Ebrahim

Wrong. You see he is stating a fact. Smartphones are not invented to be a speaker. Back in my days, phones were used for making calls and sending an ‘sms’ was totally hardcore back than.

  • xperiaz6603swe

    yes exactly:)

  • Melfes Wired

y did i hear that Z2 has better contrast?

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    Samsung NP550P5C – S0? :p

  • afzal zainal

Prefer z2 over new htc one… With extra ram ( future proof for gaming and demanding apps that running higher ram usage ) not really impress with new htc one with duo lens where nokia can create similar re-focus imaging with single lens. Overall i do like htc design n meterial plus 5mp front cam suit for a person who love to used monopod….

    Is Sony big in Indonesia?

  • Ziich

    looked like he used spotify

  • boblow

the m8 has beats on because you can not turn the beats option off for the speaker, you can turn it off for wired heasets though

  • boblow

better for people to think you are a fool than to speak and know you are.

  • Pingback: HTC One (M8) vs Xperia Z2 ???????????????? ?????????????????????()

  • klaus der gabelstaplerfahrer

wrong beats audio isn’t enabled it’s called now boomsound for speakers…and the m8 has still the beats audio files but they are using now DTS which is more better then beats…and for speakers they also use a new srs which is really awesome…..and with a bit sound modding it can get better :) ( xda-developers, Zeroinfinity with his PureXaudio/ProjectERA)

  • Potato

and you hate HTC and Nokia. Stupid.

  • Potato

    You just went full retarded.

  • Andy

Overall the Sony Xperia Z2 is a definite step forward for the series. It
might be an incremental upgrade rather than a device overhaul, but it
delivers in the areas that matter, making for a package that’s highly
    desirable and ultra powerful.
And if you have decided to become a proud owner of this device, perhaps you’re in the market for a solid and beautiful protection case as well.
