JDI’s 5.5-inch WQHD display to ship soon; heading to a future Xperia?

JDI 5.5-inch WQHD displayJapan Display Inc (JDI) has announced that its 5.46-inch LCD module with wide Quad HD (WQHD) resolution will start to ship in April 2014. The display has a resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels, resulting in a super-impressive 538 PPI. If this same panel had a FHD display, it would still have a very good pixel density of 401 PPI – we do wonder whether you’d be able to tell the difference between the displays.

This display uses JDI’s enhanced low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology, which helps to deliver low power consumption. JDI plans to release a number of WQHD products in 2014, if you remember back to October 2013, JDI announced the development of 5.4-inch and 6.2-inch WQHD displays. There is every chance that we could see one of these being used in a Sony Xperia device in 2014.

impressive screen and almost bezel free, i wonder if its similar dimensions to z1
or will sony add fugly bezels and make it a behemoth

  • Adrian969

Does this one have to same thing that is in Z2 that lets it display more/better colors than most screens? That wider color space? Or is it up to Sonys triluminous tech and that can be implemented to any screen that Sony chooses to use?

    JDI FTW!

  • erewr

    This is a 5,5″ WQHD (1,4440 x 2,560 pixels) display. The Xperia Z2 has a 5,2″ FHD (1,080 x 1,920 pixels). They are different LCD’s and use different technologies.

  • Man

Its a shame that our eyes cannot see nothing more than 250 ppi on screen like these. So it is only battery sucker component ;P

  • Man

Xperia Z3 on horizon even without Z2 global release? :O

  • Jaouad

Also isn’t this screen rumored to be in multiple flagships from other companies. I thought that Huawei was using this screen but also the iPhone 6 (the 5.5″ version will have this screen).

  • Herp Derp

This isn’t a phone, it’s a screen panel. Of course it has no bezel.

  • xperiaz6603swe

    Z2.5 :-D

  • Tjaldid

    I think Oppo uses JDI

  • DStyle

This could be use in upcoming Xperia Z3

  • Mohammed Khired

    i don’t think so…

the resolution is overkill , they should put similar resolution into the next xperia tablet

  • ITI

I thought it was new xperia with borderless display :)

  • Freepat 75014

After 1080p for me it will be 4K or nothing

  • Freepat 75014

This said, this display looks georgeous…

  • Adrian969

Other manufacturers will go for 1440p, Sony will be forced to do the same even if it is overkill.

  • Adrian969

Not really true. Watching pictures you dont need higher res. When reading text on screen, high res is good for making it look like printed text.

  • Stephen

wow what cop on u have
but i did say impressive screen not phone
    you dont read so good?

  • xperiafan324

Honestly, I’m still more interested in this :

Maybe in the z4? Here’s to hoping!

  • scw

I was hoping for the Z1 compact actually, I still think 5″ or above is too big for a mobile device.

  • ooohhh.. a 5.5 Z3 would be really nice :D

  • =D

Would be damn stinki’n awesome if that’s the actual phone though. lol

  • JG

Stop hoping, just buy the compact z1, if you keep on mumbling about 5 inch is way too big!

  • Cedllau

I don’t think it will use in Xperia Z series.
It has only 70% NTSC gamut while the previous Xperia Z has more than 100% NTSC gamut.

  • Diego Mendes Fernandes

I think this is on Z2

  • Kaostheory

Meh, I want Morpheus on Xperia in 2014.

  • WhyWhy

    Why Stephen why???

  • Luís Alberto Pérez

When you wrote “impressive screen and almost bezel free” everyone thinks that you are referring about an actual phone and no about the screen. The screen don’t have bezel because only a phone have it. We don’t read bad, you are the one that’s writing wrong. ;)

  • Correction

Z2 Uses LCD technology. That one’s OLED.

  • HardyHarHar

Damn phones getting larger and larger every launch :( I wouldn’t be surprised if a few years from now we would be having phones like this.

Whoever made the trend of big phones = great phone one thing I can say to you is “I wish you weren’t born!!!!!!”

  • Mon

You know what? even on printing these days just use 300dpi :/

  • Mon

Yeah.. TBH, 1080p on phone it’s overkill already

  • Diego Mendes Fernandes

I know that, but if you look the only difference is the LCD technology, Z2 have IPS and this have OLED.
    Got it?

  • alex

Displey quality is Great, but 5.5 inch… It`s fablet

  • azzido

I love the background wallpaper! Why it is not presented in Z1 yet? :(
All Z series should get it…

  • No Native Speaker

    i think so

The width of the display would be aprox 68 millimeters

if sony is capable to grad a thin frame around the display, the z3 wouldnt be much broader with a 5,5″ display

  • Danny

Who all are using JDI displays? Companies, that is, just curious.

  • Danni

    Ever heard an iPhone? seriously?

Very interesting thing I just come across at MyDeals247.com – I could choose any number of jewellery items (from the list) at very heavy discount rates (up to 75% off online) – more we buy more discount – I never seen this before.
