Android 4.3 released for Xperia Z on T-Mobile US (10.4.C.0.814)

Xperia Z_10.4.C.0.814A couple of days back, T-Mobile US announced that firmware build 10.4.C.0.808 was rolling out for the Xperia Z (C6606). The problem was that no users received the update. Well it turns out that the firmware update is finally rolling out, but with firmware build 10.4.C.0.814 instead.

Up until now, T-Mobile Xperia Z owners had been stuck on firmware build 10.3.1.E.0.191 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The good news is that we can confirm that this firmware build relates to an upgrade from Android 4.2.2 to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

This is perhaps a small consolation given that Sony recently started to roll the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to global Xperia Z owners, but we suppose it is better than nothing. The update is available over-the-air (OTA) right now. If you’ve download the update, let us know your thoughts below.

4.3 updates yields new sounds; such as when you press Home or open/close list of applications.

Application icon has been changed to 9 dots. When list of apps is open, there is a menu bar displaying; Search apps, Uninstall, SHOW APPS – Own order, Alphabetical, Most used, Installed, GET APPS – Play Store, Sony Select. The menu bar can be accessed by swiping from far left of screen or by swiping individual app page windows to the left until the menu is displayed. Apps removed (Icon has disappeared from Apps list) – Civil Alerts and Messenger. Apps added/altered – Support is now named Xperia Care Support, but is still listed alphabetically as Support.

Settings – Window now has a soft white background. Off toggles are now a light gray. On toggles are a light (pastel) blue. This same blue is used Settings Sections; for example, WIRELESS & NETWORKS. The sub-settings (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Data usage, etc.) are in a crisp black (which yields great readability against the soft white background).

anyone can tell me what are the improvements and if there are any bugs?

Sony Select app has a simpler layout with a background auto-rotating color.

After update, upon checking Play Store I am being asked to update Dolphin Browser for Android (May 19th) and Maps (May 28th). I check pretty regularly and I had not received any indication to updates these two apps previously. Upon clicking UPDATE for Dolphin, I get a new acceptance window (not previously seen).
    “Dolphin Browser for Android

needs acces to (in light gray)
Dolphin Browser for Android (bold) does not require any additional special permissions.
    Accept”

Messaging app has a softer gray-white background and text is a crisper black. New message icon now is titled WRITE NEW. Selecting a thread, messages sent have white background with black text and messages received have blue background with white text. There is also a star icon for each message instead of long pressing message. Images sent via text are much larger (as in almost take up the entire screen) as such no longer necessary to open the image to fully see it. About to send message to wife and behold “Welcome to the new Xperia keyboard! To get the best possible experience, please go through the setup. Cancel or Continue” Previous keyboard settings have been saved to the new Xperia keyboard. The keyboard is very different. Looks sort of like an iPhone keyboard. The characters are, for me, definitely an improvement. For example, it now only takes 1 press of special character button to get to $, &, @, etc. Also, these common characters can now be accessed via long press on letters; $ – s, & – g, @ – a. Lastly, there is an emoticon button.

kitkat 4.4 for xperia ZR US just rolled out this morning!

  • bimmersonygasm

Any bugs or battery drain issues?

  • Ken E

Updated camera, messenger, email, contacts. Haven’t noticed any bugs yet. Overall snapier performance and for some reason my 4G signal is stronger. (can add Xperia themes now too)

  • Chris

The update looks exactly like kitkat even tho its still jelly bean. I know this cause I have a z2 tablet running kitkat and they look exactly the same now

  • az

Got the update this morning and so far no problems. Only I’m not able to change the color of my keyboard and white is not the best for my vision. If I find the way to do that I’ll. Be perfectly happy. Amd after. Everything I’ve been reading about. 4.4 I think we’re ok with 4.3.

  • BoomerJMoore

I updated and had reboot issues. Had to quickly back up all my pics and files between reboots. Factory reset it and now it’s working smoothly finally.

  • Wolf0491

I don’t see why it even matters. My Z has basically been able do the exact same thing since I bought it with 4.1 and now on 4.4 it runs just as smooth and the same.
Maybe I just stopped caring Lol.

    1. Some of us have actual careers in which we cannot spend the entire day on the Internet. There is only so much spare time available before hitting the golf range and then meeting clients for dinner and drinks.
    2. I can also just hold the power button and then select Take screenshot.

  • 3rdflyleaf

You can change it in keyboard setting.

I think they might be more popular if the carriers other than T-Mobile sold them.

  • jag

Yup! Totally agree with you. I wonder what’s the problem of sony with the us market and the us carriers.

I noticed the better signal strength as well. Is it me or does the Max brightness seem brighter too?

  • bimmersonygasm

I don’t see background defocus or Ar Effect in the list of apps to download.

  • Ken E

I pushed from the web play store, had saved under wish list

I have had the Sony Xperia since the middle of May 2014. I discovered that I could receive texts to be read to me via bluetooth. I liked that. But sometime after the update to 4.3, my Ford now says this function “is not supported by phone.” I have looked through phone setting to see how to correct this, but haven’t found anything yet. Any suggestions?
