Sony on Lollipop rollout: “We’re finalising testing, still focused on rolling out soon”

by XB on 2nd March 2015

in Android, Firmware, Xperia Z3 series

LollipopSony Mobile has just confirmed on its social channels that they are finalising testing on Android Lollipop and that they are still planning to release it “soon”. In a follow-up tweet, Sony confirmed that releasing a stable update is its main priority. No further detail was given on ETA.

  • serendipity1002

How about a beta tester/preview program, similar to what Microsoft’s doing with new versions of Windows, that way Sony can have users’ feedback, requests, error/bug reports and smoothing all out for the final stable release.

  • Joe

    Is this just fantasy?

  • Devashish Shukla

  • Kiran Pasupuleti

Worried for Sony now, not many android OEMs have managed a stable update in first update nor do I expect Sony to ace it first time. Hope their tweet doesn’t haunt them later.

  • Makiz

autoi as ksekollhsoun na mas dwsoun kana update ahdia katanthse

  • P9

  • yespls

    id love them.

  • Amimanot

Well they did, but it’s limited to 3 (the mobile network, not literally 3 people) users in sweden

  • roeshak

A fanboy made a comment and they responded. Stable update my ass! They were waiting for mwc period.
Just roll out the damn thing already so we can close this saga. Well until the next one because as we all know perfectly well, with Sony mobile, the saga continues lol!

  • and Z Ultra ?

  • Luigi De Francesco

Calm down people! The update is ready for z3(and it seems so smooth)…we must wait the others ;) Sony is only who release lollipop for a lot of devices at once ;)

  • Luigi De Francesco

It have lollipop yet, in google edition version ;) :P

  • Xperia

    When will update

  • Taras Morales

    Den exeis k adiko

  • ndvbe

I just need it for the z3 because there should be an advantage of buying the flagship

  • Well… The entire Z-Serie is “flagship”. So what are you complaining about? Because your phone is the “newest” out of this series? I think it’s nice that the entire Z-Serie will get the update simultaneous—

And well. We get 5.0.2. directly. Less bugs, than others ;) – We’re not the beta testers for Google.

  • mUSICA

thats the reason of deal so u shouldnt be woried, unlike other oems who just realesd the update to satisfy thier fans , an yet dey got the hate for buggy update :p

  • dex

Well done! Can’t wait for the gloss to be removed from Sony app icons and the change from ‘Movies’ to ‘Video’. Take your time and test well, Sony! I am sure Sony Lollipop Z4 will be successful!

  • Thor

Coming next week for the Z3 series !!
See the first paragraph of this page (in french)

  • Man Of Steel ?

I’m also waiting eagerly for the update……… :D

    – Man Of Steel®™

  • ndvbe

Yes exactly the other phones used to be the flagship as of today the z3 IS the flagship

  • Guest

it is such a shame that Sony hasn’t changed the UI from ground up. This is seriously getting on the nerves of the users (like me). They haven’t even changed the icon pack but have started concentrating on making more themes for what is a very dated UI. Lollipop was supposed to be their breakthrough. Plz Sony learn something
    split screen multitasking
    new UI
    more customization options
blinkfeed like option for a quick glance at important updates
    more lock screen customization
Koreans have done their software optimization way way better even Apple for that matter
How rigid do u have to be Sony before turning your fans into haters with such small things

  • Firos Khan

please return #walkman instead of Music #Walkman_forever

  • Filippo

  • Yan Qin

No initial update is perfect. There is no way they passed the due because of perfect update. They just fail, no excuse,

  • so where

Idon’t care anymore. Im already siked for the S6 edge now.

  • so where

The entire line is not the flagship. If that were the case the term would have no meaning. There is no excuse for not updating the z3 first.

  • Hans

Important question: does it have the new camera API?

  • Vasilis K.

Test it more Sony! We want it bugless! Even better, wait and give us straight 5.1!

No problem. If they need more time, they need more time…
Sidenote: I hope the Z Ultra gets Remote Play for PS4

  • Snorky112

I like the UI more than any other… what you’re saying is just your opinion they dont need to make what you only want, if youfind their UI outdated, buy a samsung with and ugly touchwizz

  • hmmm

Please sony, take you’re time!!!!you can release it in December…it will be such a great present!!!also,PLEASE SONY,explain us how does Snapdrogon 810 DOES NOT HEAT up on htc,lg and others!PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,DO THIS FOR US!!!!!

  • apolloa

Cool, I would rather a bug free smooth running lollipop, sounds like we should get no later then next April.

  • Filippo
  • Olger Shaqiraj

    lollipop check – fail

  • steffen gjærdingen

I’m hoping on more manual control in the camera, like shutter etc, but i have a feeling that will be the big selling point for z4 and then roll out that update after z4 realase

  • Taras Morales

Also some italian press said that they will release for europe this week, and france the next week….but i dont really believe them

  • crapifiknow

    Caught in a landslide.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Z1S Z2A Z3V you also missed the Z Ultra said below

  • Lucian

We will get 5.0.2 so I have no problem waiting! :)

  • So you want a buggy 5.0 update before a stable 5.0.2 update? Everytime Google releases a new android major it’s buggy as fuck and every vendor who releases updates in the first weeks and days after it gives nothing more than an unstable release to his customer.

Why is it so hard to wait?

  • Lucian

We will get 5.0.2 while all other phones from Samsung and HTC are still on buggy 5.0

  • Nino

    No escape from reality :P

  • Lucian

IMO the wait will be worth because it looks like we’ll get 5.0.2 directly.

  • Stemro

Except many rumors are saying that Android 5.1 will also come out in March…

  • ndvbe

5.02 is already running on the z3. I just dont want them to wait rolling it out till the last bug on a an xperia z has been found and fixed. They should focus on their new products.

  • crapifiknow

Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see………

  • Rick N

    Please don’t rush guys

  • hcm.

Split screen multi-task on Touchwiz is pure gimmick, people don’t even use the split screen function that often on a surface pro running Windows.

Sony UI is as elegant as it can get, you want customization? take the newly released Theme Creator tool.

Blinkfeed what? remember Timescape? when Sony implemented the same concept years ahead of HTC, users screamed for it to be removed – and not to mention HTC users often opt to remove Blinkfeed from their home screen.

As for lock screens, this is Android not iOS. there are tones of different lockscreen options available from individual developers. Yes there are no FPS, but I would rather not to have a physical button ruining that beautiful glass front panel.

Go get yourself a Korean phone.

  • hemipw54

I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy

  • hemipw54

Unlock the bootloader for the Z3V people will you?

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

  • Benoit

Like instead of developping an AR mode that nobody is ever going to use, try to make a decent auto mode?
    I completely agree.

  • minki

Because I’m easy come, easy go…

  • Gustav Salazar Vazquez

We are still gonna have bugs this is just an excuse for being such lazy

  • Gustav Salazar Vazquez

Samsung phones have 5.0.2 and we are still going to have bugs this is just an excuse

  • Mateus

    A little high, little low

  • How soon is their soon?

  • Killian Khoo

    Off Topic:
Sony will focus more on software and not hardware said current CEO of Sony Mobile ~

  • You promised “until the end of February”, you failed to deliver. You need to hurry up a bit. I do want a stable update, but other manufacturers have managed to deliver stable updates faster

  • Capitan_Beto

Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me,
    to me..

  • Chitti- The Robot

Snapdragon had heating issues on its first production batch. LG G Flex 2 was first to use those. So, those phones had heating issues, average performance and constant throttling. But later on Qualcomm managed to fix those issues. Newer build, upcoming phones use new production of SoCs in which issues solved. A hands on video of HTC One M9 show great improvement and very less heating. Proved that Snapdragon 810 currently has NO issues.

  • Rogue

Funny how most of you guys are complaining about not having lollipop but when you do get you’ll come back and complain about bugs! As I see it the other manufacturers are now catching up to Sony and even copying them some what ! Just look for yourselves HTC with sense 7 has a theme engine and they now use pinch to open options like he Sony always used it to access widgets ,themes and wallpapers ,so too is Samsung . So instead of complaining watch the videos of the M9 and S6 and realise that they are now bringing stuff and features Sony had for a long time. All Sony needs to do is fix the camera software of superior auto and give more manual control and it’s game set ! take a look at how they are copying the company many of you here are crying down.

  • kedar

When update coming for Xperia t3??

  • Kevinski Ying

I think we’ve all been there when Sony decides to use “soon” instead of specifying the date, or at least some numbers like in a week or two. This “soon” from Sony is not exactly soon, i’m afraid.

  • ash

Sony can fix bugs in 5.0.2 which google fixed in 5.1. 5.1 android mainly tweaked UI of android which sony is anyway is doing.

  • It is the carrier restrictions, not Sony itself.

  • Jeff Martinez

    Anytime now Sony…

  • Jardany Estrada Nuñez

    Just kill a man..

i hope they didnt have removed screen recording feature

  • uso

fell asleep waiting for my lollipop update.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Seriously, is there any evidence that Sony ‘lollipop update is going to be bugless beside Sony’s obtrusive promise? I’m maybe too pessimistic but base on the past Sony update was almost always late but still potential with bugs. Anyway as other companies is bringing Sony’s features to their phone, why doesn’t Sony do the same and bring features from others to xperia. I’d love to see the ability to modify navigation bar and icon on homescreen like htc or LG appear on Xperia

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Agree! Ar and Ar fun is fun for like 2 or 3 times of usage at most. There is nearly no value for real photography except to entertain chchildren. Sony select, what’s new, lounge, privilege (which is dead now if I remember correctly), and even sociallife can and should be combined into 1 instead of scattering around. Sony should have focus on small but essential on the core app not on those above then call themselves innovative.

  • yuskhayru

    I like this. haha

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

True. It’s clearly a lame excuse.

  • Patrick

put a gun against his head…

  • Cool, I made the news! ;-)

  • *snortle* Nice one! :-)

  • Niels d. G.

Well it’s soon compared to how long you’ve been able to live your life without the update.

  • Ritwij

My HTC One (M8) is on 5.0.1 and it’s been a month but I still haven’t found a single bug.

  • Ritwij

Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead. So STAHP.

  • We’re not the only one. lollipop is still less than 20%

  • Good job Sony, good job ;)

  • skyxz

in leaked videos, you can see that lollipop is not buggy at all. My Z1 is much more stable than my friends one m8.

  • skyxz

    That’s their gameplay.

  • skyxz

Waiting for camera API!! Complete control over it.

  • rvjaywaks

    where’s fucking timel???/

  • Guest
  • skyxz

Xperia Z1 was the first phone to receive 4.4.4 kitkat And It has no bugs. Till date my friends envy the fact that their ‘2014 flagship devices’ m8, s5, g3 , etc lags, hangs, gets stuck and my 2013 phone Z1 is still reliable and faster than their’s.

  • skyxz

As long as camera software is first in line, I’m happy.

  • Snorky112

if it’s a blizzard level soon, you can wait from 1 month to 2 years lol

  • libioo

    and another one …

  • skyxz

True. The entire Z series since of ’13 and ’14 will be receiving it back-to-back.

  • Snorky112

no they promised Q1 2015, which is until march 31

  • jep

Im with you.dont mind brainless fanboy..

  • Rolf Martin Schmidt

Another video showing from the Sony booth at #MWC2015 in Barcelona showing the Xperia Z3 with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. The commentator’s language is probably Spanish.

  • ggassgagsg

you are moving like snail, sony, get your shit toghether!

  • Joe

Curious about the *entire Z series* part.
Does that mean they will roll out L for every Z?

  • Yes, if Qualcomm supports it.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Coming WeekS… Well better late than never…

  • Jaissal S

I am happy to wait as long as 5.0.2 is a very stable version. I am excited for the Lollipop to refresh my Xperia Z1. I mainly hope that the camera bug is sorted and also the lock screen wallpaper bug is sorted too. I’m just not sure about the standard wallpaper that they have shown.

  • Joe

To clarify, I meant at approx. the same time for every Z series Xperia.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

No bug really, it was a pain in the ass for me to use camera on Z1 on the initial Kitkat update, it always froze the whole app after a 15 – 20 consecutive shot not to mention the heat problem, sure it’s pretty smooth most of the time but it does get delay once in a while. It took Sony long enough until firm 157 to nearly fix the camera problem.

  • No, they said the update should be rolling in February based on their tweet during CES, not Q1 tho

  • 83n3k

September October Or November :D meaning of SOON by Sony :D

  • Christian Juul Anthonsen

I can’t wait to get notifications on screen when its in standby!

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Oh this video is nice. The clearest look on Lollipop yet. The videos seem like it was speed up.
Anyway, there are some notable things:

-Overall performance seem pretty smooth => Good (then again it could be that as the video was speed up)

-Music icon looks lame but the UI in the inside stay the same so it’s OK.
    -Album seem smoother
-Dialer is like stock Lollipop now and it’s also now separated with the contact app (still not see that one in action)
-There is no Note app anymore but instead they use Google Keep.
-Stock browser make a comeback but it show old not materialized icon so I guess there no update to that one, just it being brought back
-Dialer, Contact and Message icon stay nearly the same, which is suck to me.
-Lifelog, Socialife, TrackID haven’t been update to the lastest.
-No new wallpapers from 2015 series yet.
    -Recent Panel seem really smooth.

So I guess overall impression at this point on Lollipop is kinda positive. Hope it stays like that with all the Z series. But they probably trim down quite a few things when moved to Z2 Z1 and Z :( There are places that could be improved like the camera doesn’t seem to bring anything new aside from new icon, hope performance and pictures quality is different.

  • ash

He is talking about 4.4.4 not your initial update dumbo. Initial was 4.4.2

  • ash

Software is same just name changed

  • mrninko

:D you made my day :D

  • mrninko

just words, i´d be really suprised if it´s true :D

  • Alex Bergen

Respect to Sony!! Its the largest rollout update between LG, Samung or HTC. Nice Focus on a Stable Version is very very good too (we looks to Samsung at while). I have a Xperia Z but it is “old but fu**ing gold”. But how long will sony update the xperia z in the Future?

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

On Z1’s firmware 108 which was before 157 and also 4.4.4, the problem I mentioned about camera wasn’t fixed. And some recognized developers on Xperia XDA Forum also said that firm 157 which is lastest for global Z1 currently is also not perfect as there’re reports on battery draining problem.

It’s not that Sony updates aren’t good, they are but bugs seem unevitable and I don’t think it’s a justify reason to defend Sony’s update slowness.

  • Ingus Keivs

I better wait for more polished update. Anyway Lollipop had severe truobles.

  • skyxz

I agree that once .157 hit Z1, finally the camera caughtup with the speed but its been rare that I came across temperatue issues with my Z1 since that update.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

yeah I was talking about previous kitkat update like 108 for example, it took Sony long enough until 157 to fix most stuff.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think Sony’s Lollipop could learn a think or two from Samsung Touchwiz: For example in this one, Sony could have made the recent app panel a bit more elegant and add a close all button, instead of cramming search bar, smallapp bar and recent app into 1 place like in the preview vids. in this one, it show that Sony theme engine should extent more to let customer modified the icon this for making the notification bar mor unique, not just keep it as stock as possible. this for making a nicer clock widget this for making the dialer UI more intuitive as what I have seen from the preview clip, the dialer UI of lollipop Xperia isn’t that intuitive yet, but I could be wrong on this one.

The rest of touchwiz is pretty crap and Sony’s counterpart is better.

  • Jaissal S

I am running the .157 build on my Z1. It runs very well with few bugs. I still experience the camera bug where it becomes unavailable after the picture is taken. I also can’t change my lock screen wallpaper as it is stuck on the wave that changes colour. I mainly hope that 5.0.2 fixes these bugs. Battery seems fine for me. I still love using my Z1. Although I have thought about upgrading later this year to hopefully the Z4.

  • Mercast

Sony needs to make a Windows 8.1 (or Windows 10) version of Z Series. Like HTC did with it’s flagship. Android is nice and a great platform but it’s not everyone’s first choice. I love Sony but i use a Microsoft Account as a primary account. It seems very unlikely this is going to happen as Sony is going full android (Bravia with Android, Wearables with Android etc) but still…

  • Darrien Lambert

Z3 dual D6633, new software certified, Lollipop rollout this week??

  • brick

Why all this hurry to get it? Is your phone not working on Kitkat? Are you really that bored with your life that you can’t live without some trivial interface change in your phone right now? My Xperia Z3 is perfect on Kitkat, I can’t really find any fault with it, performance and stability is amazing and the interface looks good.

The update is coming in a matter of weeks now, just keep enjoying your phone without being a needy entitled little children.

  • Raajputro

I disturbed sony and o2 a lot for update for the xperia Arc, didnt help anyway :(

  • Zohaib

    As per i know Sony,
First they will release Z4 tablet and M4 Aqua on Lollipop
then they will give us update for z3,2,1 & other

  • Fadi Obaya

  • skyxz

Yeah that wallpaper bug is something I’ve faced too.

Same here! Love Z1, but i guess it’s time to upgrade. I was stuck between Z3 and iPhone 6, think I’ll wait for Z4 and then decide.

  • Jaissal S

I will never move away from Sony Xperia. Z4 maybe for me later this year. iPhone 6 is a step back… Maybe Z3 :)
