  • Kurt Kobaine

    Wow xperia z2

  • Robert Llobrera Jr.

Nice! An Xperia Z2 with Lollipop version!

  • shame about the top bezel being slightly thicker than the bottom considering the omnibalancedesign was marketed as symmetrical

but i adore the fact that they got rid of those stupid cut in the glass speakerholes

  • Rock Kickass

I’m starting to think I should of upgraded to the Z3 now.

  • Kurt Kobaine

    Xperia z2 front design?

  • omar

sony reduced the bezels in C4 and can’t in Z4? it’s really bad thing

  • Reza

This is it, SONY??? Come on!! You could do much better, it’s already 5th gen of the Z series, how come that you don’t try a new design, at least something totally new and refreshment. I was expecting more than this so I will keep my z2 anyhow.

  • LiterofCola

    ditto

  • jag

Maybe it’s because of the rumored s master hx chip? I just hope it’s not a rumor this time.

  • MG

It is the same, maybe the shadow at the bottom tricks you

  • Žilvinas

Looks to me too like the Z2 front

  • Alexander Steil

Are the Bezels even wider than before? Why Sony, why?

  • Akand

Waiting for a quite long time to upgrade my Z1, from the day Z2 got released. It seems that Sony is getting downgraded day by day. Making no sense to upgrade. But I can’t hold Z1 anymore. So going to buy Z2/Z3 after official uncovering of Z4. Still waiting with a hope and believing these leaks are fake, done by Sony rivals to force people to buy anything instant without waiting anymore. They may think that leaking disappointing Z4 would be helpful to increase their sale. It may be a joint venture of HTC, Samsung and Apple. Believing this way I gonna wait until official announcement. But if these leaks are true, then no way. This time it would be my first non Sony flagship device.

  • roeshak

This could so easily be mistaken for the z2 from the front. Sticking with omnibalance isn’t wrong in and of itself but do they all just have to look so identical with the metal frame being the only differentiator?
I have to say after seeing all the 2015 flagships, I have absolutely no interest in replacing my z2. We really have hit a plateau it seems. IPhone 6 was compelling for Apple fans because it was the first large screened iPhone. The s6 is compelling for Samsung fans because it’s the first premium galaxy s device. Htc and Sony seem to have no where to go beyond where they got lat u year. Not in any meaningful way anyhow!

  • inspire

    What really has downgraded?

  • ?? ???

Not exactly downgraded but it hasn’t improved by much at all when compared to other OEM flagship devices.

  • JiaWei

They are the same width! And YES to the speakers :D LOOKS GOOD SO FAR. definitely an upgrade from my Z.

  • Sadab Khan

    Same shit just different year

  • privilege

    Wow 99% is xperia z1…. I see z1 whit speakers of z2…

  • paul_cus

It’s got to be close now.

  • kido

Lol well said!! I totally agree with you

  • well, nothing has changed at all…the good thing is that the USB port is opened. Hoping for Xperia Z4 Ultra to have smaller bezels ;-)

  • kido

In 2015 where samsung is expected to break sale records with their new s6 premium models, sony is still using 2013’s z1 design with minimal changes….

  • Epyon007

I’m really wondering if I should update from my ZL or not? I was hoping for more of update from the Z4

  • qehehjjabbdnn

thats because both sony and htc already had well sized and designed phones

  • mustafa

The Z4 has the speaker as part of the front panel. The Z2 has the speaker as part of the frame.

  • Thumbs

Sony should be able to build a thinner, water resistant ZL by now. If not that then at least a Z3 compact with the same bezels but a larger 5 – 5.2″ screen.

I’m hoping all these leaks are fake – onleaks was wrong about the M9 – and that Sony delayed the Z4 because they realised they needed do more than just give the Z3 the speaker position from the Z2. Oh please for the love of…

  • Oh!

Actually I am very disappointed with this phone. Following are my reasons:
    1. The bezels.
I am hoping for Sony to at least trim down the bezels. Just by trimming down the bezels, they can make the phone look different, look refreshing. However, with big fat ugly bezels, it just make the front look the same from previous generation.
    2. QHD screens.
I am aware that some people are going to say there is no need for 2k screens, etc. However as technology move on, sooner or later Sony has to put in 2k screens. As a loyal Sony fan I am going to buy this phone regardless of 2k or just HD. However to the consumer, they will just get the phone with a better screen.
I am also aware that 2k drain much more battery. However to the consumer, they won’t know which phone has a better battery life unless they use it!
    3. The overall design
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I know that. However, the back design is getting boring. Maybe if Sony can make it glow like the apple logo on the mac when there is a notification? (Of course with the options to turn it on or off)
    4. Camera
I hope Sony isn’t using the old sensor. The camera sensor don’t suck. However, why stay at the same camera sensor when Sony is capable of making better sensor?
    5. Camera software
Please provide more aspect ratio. For example 1:1, 3:2, etc.
Please make the shutter faster as well. There is an obvious shutter lag when compare to S6.

No offense but I just got to voice this out. I love Sony phones and tablet. I am currently using Xperia Z2 and Z3 Tablet Compact. Great battery life and buttery smooth software. However Sony isn’t close to perfect yet. All the best to Z4.

  • inspire

You mean when compared with the transitions like m8 to m9, g3 to g4 and ip5 to ip6?
    (excluding S5 to s6 here)

  • ?? ???

HTC not so much but when you compare the Galaxy S, S2, S3 etc to S6 Edge.. Sony seems to be somewhat dropping the ball

  • John Caddell Sparky

To be honest Omni-Design is boring for me now… :(
I hope at leaset Z4 will be a HUGE upgrade from z3.

  • jmaxim917

Absolutely correct. With no discernible difference between the Z2, Z3 and Z4, why would anyone upgrade? Sony will be the only ones excited about their new flagship device not knowing that all they have done is dig the hole a little deeper for them to sink into.

  • Arda Akca

I really don’t understand people complaining about the bezels since the screen to bezel ratios of Z3 Z2 and so on are pretty good compared to other flagships. Stop the nonsense talk

  • Roy

Don’t get me wrong, the design trend started with the Z series is stunning. But the novelty effect is over and the over usage of the same concept with minor tweakings is just not cutting it anymore.

Here’s a sentence I thought I’d never say: The Samsung edge is a good new concept, a beautiful device.

I can’t believe I praised a Samsung design. Their devices are notoriously hideous. But if Samsung is making an effort, Sony should step up their game. Sony has always been, in my opinion, the leading force in mobile devices on the looks department. Their flagships just feel premium across-the-board, but their sin lately has been repetition.

Worth mention that the Z4 tablet is the epitome of beauty on a electronic device. They do tablets like non other.

I really hope that the Z4 is the final chapter on the OmniBalance family. It was great to have it, but I want something new and gorgeous.

Random idea pitching: the SONY logo should be used as the notification led. What do you guys think?

  • Timel

Omg so big bezel wow Sony is very cool keep do it Sony, make the bezel more bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger

  • Dave Adams

“With no discernible difference between the Z2, Z3 and Z4, why would anyone upgrade?”

Aside from upgraded processors, cameras, displays and actually getting timely updates from carriers you mean?

  • 5yini

To be honest I’m not sure what to think here. I mean it doesn’t make sense for Sony to shear the design of their premium phones with their midrange. Logic tells me that the M4 has now adopted the design of the z3, meaning that the z4 would have a different design to to the M4 and Z3 (unless the people at Sony aren’t reasoning). I believe the leaks we saw in late 2014 are a much closer rendition as to how the phone will look (you know, when Sony got hacked). But that’s just me.

Yup, I agree with you regarding the logo. Sometime our phone screen don’t face upward. With Sony logo at the back as notification led, it is def a plus.

  • Oh!

If we don’t complain, how is Sony going to improve?

Right now I’m not impressed with the phones this year. The s6 edge is a beautiful phone but I fear for battery life. Right now I’m waiting on the Z4 and lg g4, hopefully they both don’t disappoint.

Hey guys! I’ve just got this notification! D5833 lollipop is just arrived!

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

    Upgrade
    -Processor:Check
-Camera: Are you sure? Not much changes have been shown through the leaks, and I doubt it would actually be any actual better. Just some incremental improvement.
-Displays: then again, no sign of it. S6 is already praised as the best screen out there. Sony’s phones’ screen have never been the best. Some not even considered good enough. This one haven’t got any sign to be actual better than anyone.
Actually getting timely updates from carriers: Lol where have you been all these recent days when people cry for update.

I’m not saying Z4 is not better than previous Zs in most ways, but the improvements are so minor each time. Or at least not really emphasized by Sony or recognized by other tech site at all.

Design wise, it’s definitely not a bad design but it’s boring now. People can say everything bad they said about design of iPhone or Galaxy phone to Xperia now. The leaks clearly showed Sony haven’t really improved what matter, like the holding, the slippery, the color variant, the bezels, etc.

  • ash

see the signal bars they are not from lollipop, very bad renders :P

  • RbbrDcky

This is now exactly what I wanted! A merging of the Z2 and Z3! You could argue that this is how the Z3 should have looked like to begin with but whatever. I know a lot of people complain about the size of the bezels but I think that they are the perfect size on my Z3, especially for landscape gaming and watching YouTube vidoes while laying in bed. I have read interviews with Sony engineers in the past that have said that waterproofing the phone does add to the space requirements. So the question to all of you is: would you sacrifice having a water-resistant phone just to shrink the bezels? It seems silly to me to think that anyone would but I get the impression that there actually might be, lol.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

HTC keeping the design haven’t really getting positive feedback. Sony is in worse situation than HTC so they can’t expect to do the same.
Sony’s design get lots of mixed opinion. They may look good on render picture, but not always in the real life, at least to the many customers’ opinion out there: not more beautiful when comparing to iPhone 6 or S6 or even HTC one. Beside their get bashed for the slippery, the bezel, the heating cause of glass, the handling, even some complain about build quality, etc. so it’s not really well designed phones.

  • skrug

He’s comparing the upgrades between the Z series. Did the display improved between the Z series? yes. did the camera improve? yes.

They did improve “the holding”, ergonomics, with the Z3, they made the frame rounded so it’s more comfortable to hold. Also, glass is inherently not slippery. They had different colours for the Z series, Black, White, Purple, Bronze, Silver Green. (Are these what really matters?) What one thing that really matter is battery life, which Sony improved and is on top.

  • Ça?atay

    You’re welcome

  • Timel

Agree about its bulky bezel, I love design of the ZL.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I think the transition of ip5 to ip6 is fine. At least the majority of people accept and like it.
G4 haven’t got official announcement so you can’t be sure. They are already emphasizing their first f/1.8 sensor for camera.
Sony is in worse situation than all of the above so if they want to get better, they need to do more. Can’t just expect they perform no better than anyone and get the prize.

  • Timel

With Xperia Z5 Maybe Sony should redesign the Xperia logo as well, I mean reboot the image of Xperia brandind for the new beginning

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

If he compare the first Z with the Z3 then it’s ok. But with each Z generation, it didn’t get any significant improvements. Glass is not inherently slippery but their phones with the size, frame, back design, etc. make the phone slippery and they haven’t really fix them altogether. My point is not that the next Z is not improved over the previous one. It’s just the improvements are so minor each time and does not make customer blown their mind and want to upgrade.

  • skrug

Well most people don’t upgrade every year, let alone 6 months, approx. time between each Z release, they can skip 1 or 2, and the difference will be larger.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I sure hope these leaks are just Sony distraction over the actual device (but not very optimistic about this). Basically, what I see from the leak is that this new Z4 will be a good device, but that’s it. It will just be another good enough phone in the huge market out there, nothing special, nothing mind-blowing. It feel as Sony never really try hard enough. They never actually aim to be the best in general or target the need of the majority customers. They just seem to wandering around, test various places to wait for some innovations sometimes and some other times let other develop it then surpass them. They just try to be different (not always in a good way) leading them to not get accepted by most people.
Sony Mobile is currently in bad situation unlike others, so doing just good enough like HTC is not enough. Even Samsung which is still on top try to blow customers’ mind each time.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well that’s the thing for Sony. They can’t make people want to upgrade unless they wait for 2+ years. They’re in bad situations so they need good sales everytime. They need to do like Apple or Samsung, leaving the reasons for fans or others to upgrade everytime.

  • Pingback: Sony Xperia Z4 leaks keep on rolling with new render, case shots | Pocketnow()

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

True! I don’t know why but lots of people especially in my country keep using the same Z render to illustrate all the Z series from Z1 to even Z4 leaks. While the same thing rarely happen to Apple or Samsung. It’s maybe just that the brand recognition for Apple and Samsung are better so people pay more attention to get the correct pictures each time, but that clearly show another problem of Sony.

  • skrug

skipping 1 Z would only be about 1 year, skipping 2 would be about 1.5 years.
Buy Z, skip Z1, to buy Z2 (1 year) or skip that and buy Z3 (~1.5 year)

  • inspire

Please explain the fine transition from ip5 to 6.
LG also advertised their laser focus last time and all know how the turned out to be.

Staying at the same place for 5 generations without moving forward and just becoming little fat doesn’t mean you’re upgrading. It may be called just updating with the age.
Most of the people may think you’re holding a Z2, while you’re holding Z4 actually.
It’s just like upgrading some internal hardwares in the same CPU case.
If you cannot bring / aren’t bringing something new, it means you cannot upgrade / aren’t upgrading your position.

    Don’t exclude the S5 to S6.

The S5 had the previous Samsung phones had terrible designs and that is the only reason why the S6 has a new design.

Sony and HTC have great designs that are in need to being changed.

  • VictorMartino

I really wished the Z4 would have been a big upgrade, especially in the camera department. S6 has a small battery and physical buttons which I don’t like. The G4 will have an f1.8 aperture for the love of God and Sony is doing NOTHING. It’s also rumoured that it will have a 3500 mah battery and a fingerprint scanner. My only problem with LG is their custom interface because it’s pretty heavy and unattractive, which I could fix by installing a custom ROM, but then I would lose the fingerprint scanner =

  • VictorMartino

That’s not actually good, because the hydrophobic coating will wear off with time.

  • qehehjjabbdnn

well people can bash htc and sony, fact is both still have better designs than samsung. the iphone 6 design is rather boring.
at this point they cant really improve one of the already best looking designs

  • May Czos

Bezels are exactly the same as in the Z3.

  • May Czos

    1. Bezels are not bad, they just look big because of the square shape. Don’t forget that there are decent stereo speakers behind them.
    2. Actually, QHD doesn’t drain the battery as much as people think but it significantly slows the GPU down.
    3. Z4 is going to look like Z3 because it is one. Sony changed their strategy and they’re preparing a properly new model. They’re releasing Z4 just too keep up with the competition for a few months.
    4. They’re using old sensor which is great and not exactly old. Sensor is not the problem. They have better one but it’s not ready for mass production.
    5. Camera sofware is a minor issue, it should be simplier, there should be more options in automatic mode (full resolution, HDR etc) but image processing is much wore and should be improved in the first place.

  • May Czos

Z4 is going to be a good device because Z3 is good. Z4 will be just updated Z3 to keep up with the competition in next few months. Next model should be better because it’s supposed to stay on the market for a year.

  • May Czos

image processing, camera software, screen calibration.

  • May Czos

Aperture doesn’t mean much, Z3’s (and Z4’s) sensor is much bigger and it catches more light even with dimmer optics. Bright optics with tiny sensor mean artifacts. Z4 wouldn’t be a huge upgrade. Sony changed their strategy recently and we can expect more changes in Z4’s successor. Z4 will be just upgraded Z3 to keep up with competitors for next 6 months or so.

  • May Czos

f/1.8 and f/1.9 is not about the sensor, it’s about the optics. Z3’s camera has higher aperture (dimmer optics) but also much bigger sensor which catches even more light. Sony has more problems with image pocessing.

P8 is just Z3 with even bigger bezels…

  • May Czos

Maybe next time. IMX230 isn’t ready for mass production, aluminium back is going to scratch even more, USB Type-C suppliers can’t keep up with the demand already and Sony needs their own waterproof model model that doesn’t even exist.

  • May Czos

Z4 is just Z3 with updated SoC, new USB and bigger battery.

  • May Czos

It won’t be. That’s Sony’s point. They changes the strategy and they’re quickly updating the Z3 so it will be competetive for the next 6 months or so. Z5 should be better because it should stay on the market for another year.

  • May Czos

Z4 is going to be just slightly updated Z3. They changed their strategy and focusing on the Z5.

  • gini

I would like a back aluminium like on the mdr 1r

  • I agree they have well designed mobiles, but it is probably time to give atleast a refresh. BMW for example has a specific design language, kidney grill etc. all their models have them. Almost every phone uses a Sony sensor (except for the one M9 and look how that turned out) and some of them take way better photos than the xperias in auto mode.

  • Damon Adrian

    Hell yeah!

  • they are not all the way from the z2 they’ve been thicker at the top

i think user should understand how the external design fit perfectly with the internal component. the top and bottom bazel already being rezise down since z1 and sony need a few space to located their sensor , dual speaker , front facing camera and audio jack. As the market of thinnes smartphone getting a trend now it does not mean that the internal parts will go along. small top and bottom bazel creating a back curve design to fit the image sensor, creating The slimmest design end up a hump of the back side.

  • Joe Black

    Okay, here we go.
Aluminum back? Fuck no. Glass is so much better at heat dissipation, which means it may get a little bit more heated on the outside, but it’s just because it’s conducting heat more efficiently.

2K display? What the fuck seriously, why do people want some new tech in their phone, when it won’t make a difference? Correction, it wouldn’t be better, since it’s a relatively small screen compared to the resolution. Okay, you’d get more ppi, pictures would look crisper, launcher, framework,… would too.
Here’s the thing. Regular quality videos (HD, FHD) wouldn’t, you’d need a 2K video to see any difference. And the difference would be so small, it’s hysterical. Moving on. Games would look the same, because I’m yet to see a game made in 2K res that utilises console grade graphics.
Next, you’d experience more lag overall. Maybe not lag per se, but a bit slower response in animations and such. Check out S6 Edge. iPhone 5s is faster at doing regular, everyday things that S6 Edge (?!?).

Cool off, learn what something is, and how it would affect everything around it if it was in a smartphone.

  • Azizi Nor Hadi

that new updated render look so sexy

  • Joe Black

No side bezels would be a disaster. The screen would lose sturdiness during a fall to the ground (drastically) and it would be terrible to handle.

  • Joe Black

    Agreed.

  • Lars Holmgren

Hello. For me this is an update to my phone soon necessary. Because I like Sony and has an almost three year old Xperia T (Skyfall), so I’m waiting excitedly of the Z compact. I want a smaller Xperia, I may have in your pocket.

  • cchayk

That got me pretty hyped up too. The pain I’m going through is incredible. If I charged with the dock, I have to take off my cover. If I charged with the cable only, cover stays but it may end up not charging. Truly a pita!

Now this is seriously a great way to ensure that it is 100% charging and no more holding awkwardly while charging. The bottom usb port is also the best placement ever.

  • Prateek Bhanushali

I actually thought exactly the same…. But then again, Sony has to allot the funds (which are already scarce) to every departments and camera department isn’t getting enough, I think so !!!!

  • Jaissal S

This all could be prototypes. Lets see what happens when the Z4 is revealed. I’d like to have a hands on before I buy it. I probably will anyway. The Z4 will have a USP which Sony will sell to us.

  • Snorky112

it’s what the first Z should have been

  • Fynjy7771

I never had any issues with that on my Z2, but ok, if it is annoying for you, Sony could innovate (and make something similar to ZL’s notification strip, for example), but not just a regular dot, please! Where are mighty and creative Sony’s designers I used to admire?!

  • Niels d. G.

I like my Z3 Compact’s “Liquid Reflection” frame, it’s something truly different and unique

  • LiterofCola

    Too bulky

  • LiterofCola

    Who said it needs improving?

  • webusermy

When you speak of it that way, I agree. There could be a mix of both functionality & design.

If one has to go, I would pick function over design. But of course, why not both?

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Design is a matter of personal test. It is only a fact that Sony provide better design when most people accept it. In this case, either because of the branding effect or just that the design of Z series themselves have flaw, many people still consider iPhone and the latest Galaxy better looking than the current Z.

I think their are tons of place to improve the design of Zs.
    For example:
    -they can try to trim the bezel more;
    -they can try to make a unique notification led like from others’ ideas (like around power button or intergrated into Sony logo, or simply bring back the led strip in the bottom bezel like ZL, etc.);
    -they can try to make the glass back not finger print magnet anymore (I don’t know, put on some industrial coat to prevent finger print or something);
    – they can try to make the side buttons like vollume rocker or camera button more pressy (I see many tech sites complaint on this) or separate the vollume rocker from the power button a bit, preventing miss press;
    -they can try to make the 4 corners of Z3 less ugly;
    -they can try to move the camera on the back a little to the middle so it prevent finger covering it;
    -they can try a sleeker side port so it just become seamless with the frame;
    -they can try some new color variants that make the phone look more classy and not boring (like how Samsung play with color on S6);
    -they can try different material (now that Samsung use glass back, Sony should step up with a better one), different material may also contribute to better heat control???;
    -they can try to make the screen curve a little to the side like iphone so the swiping is seamless;
-blah blah blah blah blah blah…Basically they can just come up with a different design language…
I’m not saying that they don’t try. It’s just their effort always feel not enough or not in the right place. And since they are in bad condition, they need to do better than other, not just good enough to equal with other to keep up with the competition.

  • marcy_ff2

I have z2 and currently not tempted to upgrade to Z4 (one year). who knows if xperia/bravia will continue being part of sony by z5!

  • marcy_ff2

May Z,Z1 and Z2 have screen calibration software available.

But yeah camera software needs a lot of improvement. It takes beautiful pictures on manual (tweeked). but auto is rubish!

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well ip6 sure bring many things people wanted but previous iphone didn’t deliver like different design (the new design get bashed at first but then generally accepted for its ergonomic except the camera design of course), bigger screen, better performance in many aspect, better battery (at least for the +). It basically leaves ip6 or ip6+ on the top of the game in some aspects.
But you are right. It’s just not right to judge since Z4 or G4 haven’t been official released (sure hope LG fail on that camera thingy again :p ). Still, the history do not stand on Sony’s side either. Those leaks are not promising and I think it will be more like 80% to come true :(

  • marcy_ff2

The problem with sony is that they need to have approval from all directors (japanese way of business), to push something out. if they have something approved by people they can keep releasing it (hence same screen for z2 and z3 and same design since z1). The camera software needs major improvements, but they can’t (i assume) send it to sony DSLR department because of business structure, same with soundsystem and possibly design!

Its a good business model to weed out bad ideas. Is a s*** business model for a quick turnover market (Smartphone).

On the other hand they have been delivering incredible tablets, but haven’t had enough marketing to sell them (Z2 tablet can not be bought at any physical retailer in the uk).

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well I think that will be too late for them then. They are currently in bad condition, trying to recover, aiming for profit, etc. and yet they want to wait for another year. What’s have they been thinking???

  • May Czos

They changed their stratedy quite recently and it takes time to design a new phone. Z4 is there to give them some time.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

So sad it’s true… Z4 tablet makes me want to get my hand on its anytime (since Z2 tablet get excellent feedback from my friends who own it) And then it no where to be seen after announcement…No price tag, no actual release date except promising until June,… It’s not even guaranteed to appear in my country :(

  • May Czos

Software calibration is far from perfect, colors are still way off (punchy but unnatural). Pics taken in manual mode are better but still there’s to much sharpening and digital noise.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well I’m not sure about Apple in the future but Samsung clearly haven’t had a single good implementation of water-proofing phone in any of their phones. See how S5 turned out or other X-cover, Active Galaxy…

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well I own Z1, so according to you I could have just gotten Z3 or wait for Z4 but still they just don’t feel good enough for me to upgrade. Hope I am wrong about Z4.

  • theskig

    I had a Z2 and now have a Z3.
The Z2’s notification light was beautiful, but the Z3’s dot is more useful and easier to see in daylight

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Hope you’re right…They still should have acted faster though.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

They basically need to improve and polish every aspects of the software.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

4-I think releasing Z4 just for keeping the competition for a few month is probably still not good, it will keep making the customer afraid of buying Sony’s flagship as thinking it will be outdated or replaced so soon. They should maintain Z3 and bring the best right to Z4 even if it may take to the end of the year.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

If they don’t act faster, this will just worsen the situation.

  • RbbrDcky

I’m trying to think about this as unbiasedly (is that a word?) as possible and I still come to the same conclusion: that this is the best and most practical design for any smartphone. It may not be the most flashy but, as an engineer, I’m a firm believer that for all industrial designs, form FOLLOWS function! Contrary to what Apple wants you to believe. And even when compared to the other top phones out there (i6, m9, s6, gflex2), this design is the most versatile and accessible. Ask any artist and they would tell you that there is definitely beauty in symmetry, which is no more apparent than in Sony’s omnibalance design. This includes having a flat rear panel which greatly enhances tabletop usage (which you shouldn’t even attempt on the Flex). That tabletop performance is even further enhanced by the fact that the Z3 is the only one without an annoying camera hump either! And unless you are 10 or have baby hands, your palms never touch the back of the phone (only the edges) while you are holding it, so why does the back instead of just the edges need to be rounded? Then there’s the button placement. If 80-90% of the world’s population is right-handed, why would there be frequently-accessed buttons on the opposite side of the phone where your dominant hand can’t reach, or would at least make it very awkward for it to? I’m looking at you i6 and s6! And don’t even get me started on the rear button placement, which, btw is admittedly fantastic when you’re on a call but useless any other time. HTC got the hint, although they placed the volume rocker too high up on the side that makes it a little harder for the thumb to access with stretching it. And how can you not appreciate the beauty and function of a dedicated camera button! It solves the problem of both quickly launching the camera and easily taking one-handed selfies all in one fell swoop! And if you’ve ever used a video or listened to music on a phone with stereo speakers, there is no way that you would ever go back to using one that only had a single mono speaker. You wouldn’t put up with your tv if only one side of it had sound. Why should your phone be any different, especially considering that at this point, you probably consume more content and media on it than your tv anyway. Now, with the Z4, if they actually uncover the charging port while still maintaining it’s water-resistance ratings and relocating it to the bottom, it is quite literally, now the most perfect-designed phone! As a designer, one of the worse things you can do is make changes for the sake of changing. I like that Sony, instead, is focusing on perfection, not unlike what happens in the high end car industry. I mean, just look at the evolution of the Porsche 911 over the last 40 years! Everyone is giving the s6 so much praise for it’s radical redesign, but wasn’t that design change just to make it look more like a Z3!?

  • tmnd

Who the heck cares about design?! It works, it’s good.

I want Sony to improve the Camera software and Implement Camera 2.

Z2, Z3 are wonderful phones, lagged because of that damn camera software …

Come on Sony! HTC just showed how software tweak can do wonders.

  • gunboat_d

yes and the new Mustang is what the first Model T should have been.
remember: stupidity can be hazardous to your health.

  • crazychef83

why is the date on all of these pic set to September 12. Do we know if their will be a Ultra version of this because my fat fingers need bigger keys to press.

  • Snorky112

maybe not but first Z had flaps for everything even if they knew they should and could have made them waterproof without flaps on audio jack and usb

  • azzido

    No.
    1. “holding” ergonomics came with drastical CUT to design when it comes to frame (Z2 frame still looks the best, elegant and gives premium look instead of this plastic… frame). So it is now ergonomics but with huge step back in terms of design.
    2. Display improved only between Z – -> Z1 – -> Z2. Unfortunately Z3 has worse display than Z2 (brighter but with washed out colors + cold calibration) = 1 of the reasons I skipped Z3.
    3. Glass no matter what is still far from being oleophobic. Sad but true. And to be honest I bought Nillkin Amazing H+ glass to both protect the screen and make it more slipper, it is now more comfortable to use. I only regret Nillkin is not doing the same glass for the back cover providing us with the ugly plastic film only…
    4. “New” colors of Z3 instead of black and white was just horrible! Especially the mint one (or whatever it was). Another dramatic step back after very nice Lime color of Z1. The same feeling comes with the cooper / bronze one.

  • skrug

It is still using metal frame, except for the Z3 compact. I also like the square-ness of the Z2 frame.

  • azzido

Please point your potential reasons why you are planning NOT TO upgrade to Z4.
    Starting with mine:

    1. Notification “DOT” instead of classy Z2 led!
    2. Still the same / boring design (they plan to change it with Z15?)
    3. PLASTIC rounded (therefore ugly) frame instead of premium feeling Z2 metal frame. Seems Sony is replacing ShameSung when it comes to materials… As S6 uses more premium ones than before.
4.The same camera, not curved one, same sensor, same soft, same resolution, we all know it…same as Z1, Z2 and Z3…zzz No curved lens, no Xenon flash + LED light, no OIS, no new soft – the current one still lags in camera mode…
    4. Same size and “quality” of Z3 display = meaning brighter and washed out colors LCD IPS, probably Z3 did not selled too good and now they will use the same screens “remaining on shelves” for Z4. That’s the reason why the size will also be the same :) Was hoping for 5,5″
    5. Lack of innovation, nothing new, noone really cares about additonal new “camera apps” with baloons, dinosaus, hearts and so on… kids are not buying these phones…

    Conclusion.
    due to:
    – bad/insufficient advertising
    – bad targeting
    – lack of improvement or only minor only + decreasing quality (as it is not improving, so being the same in next year means it is worse when compared to competition + examples like dot instead of led, rounded plastic instead of metal frame are making it only worse)
    – lack of innovation
    – boring the fan users to death with constantly same design (no matter it was good years ago but also it lost this factor long time ago)

I think this is the last Z we will see on the market :(

  • Arda Akca

Like software features. Multi window and such. Camera needs a hand. I would welcome louder speakers also. Notification led on the power button would be awesome tribute to vaio as you stated. Fingerprint sensor but implemented on the bezels so you don’t see a separate thing. Dual led flash or xenon maybe? Gunmetal frames for the black version. Better ringtones and sounds would be nice :D. The whistle from Sammie was pretty cool back then. Aluminium back or something that isn’t a fingerprint magnet.

  • Arda Akca

And cases from fashion brands like diesel, burberry and so on. (not so hard)

  • Raj Singh

    Do not feed trolls.

  • May Czos

It’s not that easy to design a new device.

  • May Czos

Thing is – Z3 is getting old, especially when they haven’t used SD805 processor. I think customers are used to the fact that Sony releases a new flagship every 6 months with minor changes. If they make Z5 good, they’ll be forgiven quickly.

  • Timel

No that’s because the Xperia Z4 is the last Xperia flagship phone before Sony exits the smartphone market so there’s no reason to change the design, Change for what?

  • skyxz

That is advancement in the technical field. It’s takes patience for the development of such features.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

Well at least in the design department, I think they should have a handful of different prototypes that have various design language so they can choose one to follow when they need to change. Just like how they showcased a long time ago (like back in 2012).

  • Jonathan Bratanata

it’s called not over saturating the shit out of everything

  • mukul verma

side is looking like this only. shiny side. power button is also same.

  • Chee Keong Chan

    1. agreed
    2. agreed
    3. i remember reading somewhere saying it’s metal frame
    4. agreed on the camera. but it seems sony has improve on the software of the camera and it takes better pic than z3. if it does take better pic, doesn’t matter if it’s the same hardware or not
    4. (5?) how do you know it’s the same screen as z3? have you seen a live display set of z4? z3 screen have same size as z2 and yet both are of different display quality
    5. (6?) what kind of innovation you looking forward to?

I will answer your question on why I’m not replacing my Z3C when Sony presents the Z4. Not before and certainly not based on “leaks”.

If the Z4 (or, more accurately, the next Compact as I don’t like big phones) brings ALL the improvements I think the Z3C needs (which are the same Android Central already listed in their wishlist) then I’ll replace it. Otherwise I’ll wait for Sony to actually truly improve the Z3C or for Nokia to return.

  • Here is my own engineered smartphone design, the bezels are the thinnest of any smartphone in the world with a 82.56% screen to body ratio, it also has 4 frontfacing speakers double stereospeakers, so it is possible to stuff speakers into that type of bezel

i beleive thicker bezels are needed though for waterproofing

Hey! I bet I saw it somewhere, I mean the design, looks like from the past :D

  • azzido

Hwy! I bet I saw it somewhere in the past.

  • azzido

    3. Feels plastic and look much worse than Z2 frame.
    5. It’s simple. They need to do something with the screens remaining on shelves… they will not throw it away. Instead will only callibrate it differently what they did to Z3 to fool people it is totally different one. For Z3 they changed the LEDs for stronger ones to get more bright and callibrated it colder compared to Z2 = it’s something below and not the screen itself, LEDs and so on. You can return to my post when it will be official the screen size is the same.
    6. What kind of innovation for Sony Z series? Any…

  • azzido

I like the bezels. When I am holding the phone horizontally I want to hold the bezel with my hands, not the screen itself, this is what I want to look at and do not cover it.

  • azzido

For GOD’s sake combine the omnibalance with Arc style and make the back from the glass + give it nice orange lighting strips on the corners like W980 had. Illuminate it, shine, outstand instead of boring your loyal customers…

  • Chee Keong Chan

    3. How do you know it feels plastic? Have you hold the actual z4 unit?
    5. Interesting theory you have here… As I know, the screen panel comes together manufactured with the led. You’ll get yourself more trouble by changing the led than just using a different panel altogether.
But still it’s just your guess and theory as of now.

  • Raffy Ko

Pass. Tired of this look. I’ve had the z1, z2 and z3. Enough of it! Looking to buy an S6 Edge or LG G4 for my next phone.
