Sony brings back “Close all” button for Recent Apps in latest Lollipop builds

in Android, Firmware

wpid-wp-1428537077228.jpegSony Mobile removed the “Close all” button for recent apps when it first released Android Lollipop, to the annoyance of some. Well it appears that Sony developers are listening as the button has reappeared in select Lollipop builds for the Xperia Z2 series that started to roll earlier this week. This particular feature is not available across all regions, for those where it is live, you may also notice the re-introduction of the NFC icon in the status bar.

Thanks Aaron and SO Andrew!

Good idea, but why this hideous button? A far better one is the one from the mod: http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/03/21/close-all-mod-for-recent-apps-in-xperia-lollipop/

  • Dáire Mooney

Does anyone else think the mod featured on XperiaBlog a week or two ago is ten times nicer looking. I appreciate the feature, it was something I’d miss, but even still, could Sony not have at least tried to make it look to have some material design…

  • Faisal Armand

That’s not the thing that matters.. Lollipop update seems to be anticlimactic.

Does someone know an app that can make video subtitles? I kinda want to make hitler video parody

  • MatthewPDX

Now I just need the update for C6016.

  • Clarence Alvarado

+1000 exactly. Can those people beg for the Close All also pass the news on the nodded one better than their implementation?

  • JonShipman

Why in the hell do you need a close all apps in the first place? Apps auto close on Android.

  • Not all app auto close buddy

  • ash

Even i didn’t need it. My Z1 compact doesn’t have it And I don’t want it. I can swipe it out.

  • DBS

The entire Lollipop update brings atrocious designs. This is just another one.

  • Carlos W. H. Sun

I think the old design team must have been fired.

  • JonShipman

Not services, but those stay open regardless if the app is in the recent apps screen.

Open 4-5 apps and then look at Settings -> Apps -> Running Apps. Odds are the oldest apps are already closed. All closing an app in the recent apps list does is remove the “sleep state” of that app. Think of it like Windows Hibernation, but instead of OS wide it’s on a per app basis.

  • Thariq Mohammed

Lollipop is available for Z2 in my country, but only via Wifi connection, not via carriers. Unfortunately I don’t have a wifi connection. Oh my God

  • serendipity1002

Meanwhile with cm12 we’ve got a neat close all button in the form of a tweaked “hamburger”

  • illstplaya .

I’ve never had the close all button on my xperia z1s..

  • Try PC companion

  • Chan Kin Cheung

actually removing sleep-state apps will hinder OS performance because of garbage collection too often. I never swiped any app from the list. And, i believe this function is rather a placebo effect

  • Timel

    omg!!!! Lol
    Sony UI is the worst

  • Timel

    If I was Sony
I’ll remove a search bar from recent app screen and hide the small app bar to the right edge, let user swipe it out from the right edge whenever they wanna use it. Bcause honestly Sony UI is really mess and isn’t beautiful at all.

  • raju

    Mee too

  • Aditya Thakur

    This feature will be useful…sometimes.

But the Close All button is hiding the google mic button….this is not the correct way to customise anything.

Hope sony will fix every dirty customization they had done to this beautiful os, because with lollipop release sony is showing the worst side…..they had hinted us by their new slogan…’Be Moved’

  • Aditya Thakur

NFC icon is the missing part in google’s android kitkat and lollipop….sony had showed them.

Though it is not very useful and not a plus point for us but we can say some little thing is different in sony.

  • Aditya Thakur

    This feature will be useful…sometimes.

But the Close All button is hiding the google mic button..it has been misaligned…this is not the correct way to customise anything.

Hope sony will fix every dirty customization they had done to this beautiful os, because with lollipop release sony is showing the worst side…..they had hinted us by their new slogan…’Be Moved’

P.S – We had also seen the incorrect customization of navigation buttons or misaligned navigation buttons in lollipop i.e. they are not lined up properly…do they need the roller scale for that?

Here are comparisons and the properly aligned buttons.

  • Ritwij

Dude do you have overheating issues? Because I do. And battery drain too. SoT was 7-8 hrs in 4.4.4 and now its 5hrs

  • Dhama

Better to go with devices having Google android builds………..!!!!!

  • Faisal Armand

I experienced overheating too. But for the battery drain, i’m not sure. I haven’t managed to drain the battery to 0% yet, but I think more or less it’s the same as before. In 4.4.4 I experienced a strange problem, though. When my battery hit 14% it drained so fast up until 4% and then from 4-0%, the phone just won’t die.

Z2 user on esato forum reports better battery life

  • Dhama

I think they are done with Custom ROM’s :P

  • Dhama

Sony please come up with next nexus device !!!!!

  • pixlas

Sony dig not remove the close all button. Google did. There is none in Android 5.
I think they listened to us and made one!

  • echomrg

too bad to use CM12 i have to lose some of the features i paid for…

  • echomrg

    yup, it’s really ugly.
it looks like something they forgot and slapped on at the last second.
oh, wait, that’s exactly what it is…

  • Emil Oskarsson

Haha according to you? Every smartphone except Samsung and their beloved touchwiz sucks according to you. Let me laugh at your face. Sony ui, sense ui LG ui and vanilla Android are the best UI you can get out there today. Don’t like the theme of Sonys new UI? Well then go ahead and install a Xperia theme that will change it for you :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

How is it a mess? It has just changed to the better?

  • Timel

    Xiaomi is the best
Touchwiz is now better than the previous version but still ugly anyway
But now Sony UI is the worst, the ugliest UI

I agree LG GUI is great!

  • I am actually experiencing marginally better battery life on my Z2. I haven’t noticed any overheating, but I haven’t really played any intensive games.

  • Shehab Skull

It cuts the search bar ._. Looks ugly .. They should have put it in the bottom or in the middle

  • gaga

Flag and ignore, flag and ignore, flag and ignore that is

  • gaga

Flag and ignore this kid, flag and ignore

  • gaga

Flag and ignore, flag and ignore

  • gaga

Flag and ignore him, flag and ignore timel

  • gaga

Flag and ignore, flag and ignore that is

  • serendipity1002

Its true. The lack of some sony features like Camera and audio engine and screen tech bothers me so much

  • Fadi Obaya

They shouldn’t have put it back. It’s going to fuck up the CPU and battery.

  • Mahinthan So

What the XXX.. I should have bought HTC like stalin.

  • Niels d. G.

That’s what I was thinking, they just forgot to re-add it into the new OS at first

  • Pingback: Sony reintroduce il tasto per chiudere tutte le app recenti nei suoi Xperia - Tutto Android()

  • Lorenzo

It would be far better if they made it like the mod published some days ago.
And if they removed the search bar on multitasking.
And if they hided the small apps bar to the edge, and let the user decide when to use it.

In other words, if they made it like Samsung.

  • roeshak

The first firmware they released wasn’t finished that’s all. Sony just so ridiculously late with lollipop. Does anyone know of x reality and super vivid mode work officially on any of these newer builds

  • Azar

Exactly!!! Seriously, Google? Why the hell would we want to search from recent apps. They’re just advertising themselves all over android! See how nicely implemented spotlight search is, in iOS.

  • Ritwij

No I’m not playing games. Just using WhatsApp or Snapchat and it gets heated. Not too much, but it never used to be like this.

  • Heating issue has been reduced ,not fully but somewhat OK (4 me). After around 45 min of gameplay of boom beach device tends to warmer earlier it was hot on kitkat 4.4.4.

  • Ritwij

Today my battery jumped from 6% to 4% directly. No 5%

And then I charged from 1%, it went directly to 3%

My phone is only 4 months old so I’m hoping my battery isn’t faulty (I don’t overcharge it and I don’t use the phone when it’s charging)… I take most of the necessary precautions when it comes to my battery and this is happening since I upgraded to Lollipop… So I’m guessing Lollipop is the reason. Even while typing all this, my phone has become warm, which is quite uncomfortable.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

    then stay away from it

  • Chan Kin Cheung

    agreeed

  • Ivan Cerovski

I got the 5.0.2 update for my Z3 last night and i do not have the close all button, it’s so annoying…

  • brick

Those modes work on lollipop they released here in Italy for z3 2 weeks ago. Be glad that it’s just minor bugs like these and not major ones like what happens all the time with Samsung. Coming from a galaxy s4 I have to say Sony does a better job with the updates. New features and almost no bugs is much better than getting an update earlier that is full with issues.

  • brick

Like Samsung? You mean no new features, full of bugs, battery drain and lag?

  • Lorenzo

I’m talking about only the multitasking.

  • Thariq Mohammed

    No use

  • Roy

I miss mine on my Z2 so badly. I’m a neat freak.

  • Olger Shaqiraj

Battery life seems good for me
Maybe u should try to format your phone like I have do
Didn’t test for camera overheat but with app seems I don’t overheat on 4.4.4 I have use snapdragon guru app and I have use about 48 hours without charge
I am testing battery life and After 27 hours I am on 7% battery remain (not using snapdragon app)

  • The Flash

“OHHHMAAGAWDDDD Calm down.. Sony are taking their time with lolipop so they can deliver it bug free.”

    Where are these dickheads now???

  • Azar

SERIOUSLY?!?!?! NFC icon again!!! Who needs that?! Now I won’t be able to keep my NFC on all the time. WTF? I hope it’ll be possible to remove from system/csc/feature.xml if it’d be possible to root L

  • Carlos W. H. Sun

wondering if they would fix signal icon problem..

  • brick

Is this real? Looks like a terrible work in photoshop to me. Also which new builds? The latest build is still 690 for z3.

  • Carlos W. H. Sun

it is something necessary in visual design.

  • [S]unjay

The CM12 hambuger icon looks better.

  • [S]unjay

    Is that a Z Ultra?

  • Cris de Oliveira

That’s horrible. Put a floating button to mini apps and “close all button” like cyanogen. So Polluted u.U

  • serendipity1002

    Yes it is

  • Ritwij

    Exactly

  • onosmajente

Will upgrade to lollipop come to Nigeria on Z ultra?

close some apps in recent apps.

  • Blacksparrow15

    agree with that.

  • lu99ke

actually Google did not remove it… stock android has never had close all on recent apps – it was not in 4.4 stock android… Sony added for 4.4……. so Sony HAVE forgotten to add to their 5.0…. until now that it is…

  • lu99ke

you can remove the small apps if you like.. just need to run an adb command… it makes the recent apps screen exactly like stock android – transparent navigation bar and all.. much cleaner.

  • lu99ke

    nexus 5 on 4.4….

  • Blacksparrow15

This Timel I think is a paid samsuck or isheep fanboy. Get out of XperiaBlog. shoo shoo!

  • Ritwij

    Done. Still the same.

  • naresh

can anyone tell if the update to 5.02 is live in india cos it has gone for my phone Z2 6502 after getting the notification, now there is no update for me anymore when i tried to update.

  • GraphiteEdge

Noooooooooooo, KEEP THE NFC ICON AWAY! I HATE IT. The only reason I turn of NFC is because of the stupid NFC icon, I can leave it on always with first build of lollipop. At least give the option to disable it.

  • Battal Aljadei

If that ugly button is Sony developers, then no wonder why their camera results is sucks !

  • Abo Zahra

man how to do that ?? how to make this adb command ?? and does it require a root ?? plz answer it would be much help , thanx

  • PhantomMeat

Plug your Xperia into your PC and run the following in command prompt (note you have to have the Android developer framework installed – including ADB.exe)

    adb shell

    pm hide com.sony.smallapp.launcher

    pm hide com.sony.smallapp.app.widget

    exit

    adb reboot

  • lu99ke

    What phantomMeat said! ;)

    You don’t need root.
