Which Sony Xperia devices will get Android M? Place your bets

in Android

Android MSo Google has announced the latest Android iteration in the form of Android M. We’ve heard about some of the cool features on the way and now the questions turn inevitably to 1) which Xperia devices will get the update and 2) when will it arrive?

With regards to the first question, it’s pretty certain that we will see the Xperia Z3+ and Z4 Tablet get the update, along with any other flagship series launched this year. However, when it comes to the existing Xperia Z series, should we still expect Sony to update the older Xperia Z series (Z, ZL, ZR Tablet Z) for example?

In our view it would be unlikely, especially when you consider the second question and the likely arrival date for Sony devices is likely to be in 2016. It is debatable whether we’d even see the update on the Xperia Z1 series and Z Ultra, however there would be an expectation that it would arrive on the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series.

Which models do you think will get the update and do you feel Sony has a duty to update the older Xperia Z series? If you own one of these devices, would you be upset if you didn’t see another major Android iteration on your Xperia Z, ZL, ZR or Tablet Z? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

  • Samantha

    I hope Z2 will. A lot of people joined sony with Z2 and/or Z3

  • Erwin Schrodinger

    Z3 Z2 series for sure
    Z1 maybe

  • Lukáš Pávl

Z3+, Z3 series, Z2 series and meaybe some of the newly released mid-range phones. I don’t hink that Z1 & Z series will get it. But i hope that i’m wrong.

  • Z1 and above in Z series, C4, M4 and models released before M is out.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    I have Z1 and I don’t care if I don’t get it :v

  • Frederik

If Sony updates Z1 Compact (according to the L update of the Z), the update on Z1/Z Ultra is not too much work.
    What do you guess?

  • Achot Asrian

All xperia devices starting from 2012 line, will get andrid M upgrade by XperiaOverlay
that what We can confirm from our team

  • iia3ezu

How about putting out a quality flagship phone which comes preinstalled with Android M?

The current problem Sony has is attracting new customers. The existing fanbase isn’t going to change much.

People, upgrade your older phones already, e.g. Z1, Z2. Are you intending to keep them so you can show them to your grandchildren?

  • Fsiols

    From z to z4!!

  • Z series + hmm… C, T ?

  • I Think the first Xperia Z since Z1 compact don’t have a chance to be update. The Z2 have a chance and the Z3 too. But Android M will be there for the next products and not the old. The first Z have 5.0.2 and 5.1 about many Blogs after 2 years old and it is very cool about Sony to share it to all his customers.

  • Markus

Starting from Z1 to all newer ones

  • Ritwick Priyadarshi

Xperia Z3,Z2 and Z1 series for sure. I don’t believe Original Xperia Z is going to be updated anymore, maybe few bug fixes or security updates but that’s about it. It’s been more than Two years since it release and Lollipop update seems to a good finish to it.
As for Xperia Z1 and Z1 compact, I believe it’s chipset Snapdragon 800 is still a good performer and widely supported (Nexus 5 has snapdragon 800 and will be getting Android M).

  • Jacky

As a xperia zr owner, i’m not surprised if i don’t get android M next year. I’m actually surprised to see lollipop running on my phone right now, and possible android 5.1 in august? Going from Jelly Bean 4.1 when it was out of the box, my experience has been great with the ZR (besides only having 8gb internal storage) compared with my old Xperia V (which only updated to 4.3 officially).
Also I was expecting to upgrade my phone this summer initially, but now with 5.0 and possibly 5.1 coming later I’ll keep my ZR until this fall at least.

  • Timel

    Sony said: Let him dream

  • mukul verma

z1, z2 z3 & z3+ will get, it’ll be starting to roll on from January. first z3 & z2 series, then z1 series. hopefully somemid rangers which will release in 2015.

  • browngeek

Big question though, will dual Z3 get it?

  • mukul verma

    yeah it’ll get it

  • mukul verma

except first z series, all other phones in z series will get.

  • Redfire 89

I think z1-z2-z3 and z3+ series and the original z-lineup will not more supported….I think the z will get 5.1 and thats it,but thats great and 6.0 would sooooo awesome *-*

  • Damo Conti

Z1 on z will probably miss out also most midrange phone probably won’t get it e and c series

  • bao trung giang

    From Z1 to Z5?

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

It’s nice that they update the old Z plus all the Z series.
Then some of the mid range devices which got L.

  • Dilesh Perera

  • xperiaDROID

Z4 Tablet, Z3+, Z3 series, Z2 series, Z1 series and Z Ultra will get it. As for older Z series, most likely won’t get the M update, unless the Motorola Moto X (1st gen) and Nexus 4 will get it, Sony might follow as well.

Even if Lollipop will be the last update for my Z, I won’t be disappointed, I’ll be upgrading to a new phone by that time.

  • memphis

I think from z1 to the newest flagship. Hope I can flash android m in the next month’s.

  • Sergio

I can bet myMacbook Pro that Xperia M2 won’t receive it for sure. As always, screw thank you Sony.

  • Ratha Siv

For all Z series? but Android M may not be for Xperia M… lolz

  • cocorico

Same, so proud to have Lollipop on my 2.5 years old Sony XPeria Z. Thanks Sony !

  • I just care for M4 Aqua, since I’m getting it, so yeah.. xP

  • Fadi Obaya

    I’m betting on Z1, ZU, Z1C, Z2, Z3/+ .

  • wil Rock

As a Xperia ZR owner, i am not expecting to get M because until now I still don’t have lollipop update.

  • Fadi Obaya

    Just use xperifirm. :)

  • Sergio

“All xperia devices starting from 2012 line, will get andrid M upgrade”
How are you sure about that? I shall remember all Sony midrange devices didn’t get any official lollipop update excepting T2 and C3 (lucky ones), and I do not expect anymore to see nor lollipop nor this update coming to our devices. As I said earlier, I can bet my Macbook Pro that Xperia M2 won’t receive it for sure. Screw Thank you Sony.

  • yuanhui502

Never mind. Even if my Z1c will not receive the official upgrade, I probably will unlock it and upgrade into the CM mod.
What’s more possible is that I might upgrade my phone to a newer model.Maybe the new nexus ,I guess ….

  • Jerry Anderson

Please Sony update the Older Z series like my Sony Xperia Tablet Z
Please i love new Sony and Google Features.

  • Jerry Anderson

I want Android M on my Xperia Tablet Z

  • hansip

I guess Z1 and ZU are the last to receive Android M due to the same driver with Z3 series (801 is 800 refresh etc). And it’s still quite capable chipset. Plus to think that Android M is not a breakthrough release i think that original Z might still can get it but Sony might think otherwise. But bravo for Sony to take care original Z owner for Lollipop. That is very much appreciated. Definitely buy another Xperia even with my xzu is still strong today :)

  • Achot Asrian

“All xperia devices starting from 2012 line, will get andrid M upgrade by XperiaOverlay
that what We can confirm from our team”

those devices will get a updgrade from XperiaOverlay Team not Sony, we are rewriting lates sony firmware and making builds for older devices that are not longer supported, you can ceck our website ;)

we release payd firmwares, but we also releasing free cyanogenmod builds on xda

  • Jerry Anderson

Small updates create a big changes with meaningful features and functionality and more people get more happier. New features and services.
Older Z series we want Android M

  • sfkaudi

Definitely from Z2 (maybe z1(c)) and what’s to be next after z series

  • Ravi

    From Z2

  • All upwards Z1/ZU

  • Sergio

Are you sure anyone would pay for that?! You only released KK firmwares for old 2011 and now you pretend to update 2012 devices and newer to M?
Making roms is not a business, and I really doubt of the quality of the rom.

  • Boonerski

I hope my Z1 will at least get it, seeing how it has similar hardware with that of the Nexus 5 – which is getting it (duh). That goes with the Z Ultra and the Compact as well…

  • wil Rock

    don’t know how to

  • Only the Z3+/Z4 will receive Android M, because it’s the only one that has been released with Lollipop. All the others have been released with Kitkat and have already received a major upgrade to Lollipop, so they won’t get M. That’s how Sony works: one major upgrade is enough.

  • Achot Asrian

well our customers are happy with our products, but we dont sell roms we sell automatic firmware upgrade app with included firmware, its diferent,
we suport 2012 devices like the xperia S, Sl, Acro S, ION, and soon many more, we will update to Lolipop soon, if you have questions you can also check our facebook page : http://www.facebook.com/xperiaoverlay

  • Doubleyoupee

There’s a guide here on xperiablog.

It’s easier to use flashtool only, in my opinion.
    You can skip many steps.
Just open flashtool >> devices >> check updates.
It will download, then bundle and flash.
    That’s all.

  • Popescu Catalin

I recieved Kitkat on my first gen Z, and Lollipop. What are you talking about?

  • xperiazl

i’m delighted the original Z series has gone this far. No other Sony phone has gone through as many upgrade iterations as the Z , ZL,ZR, Tablet Z. Started 4.1, then 4.2, 4.3,4.4, now 5.0 and maybe even 5.1 by year end. Keep this trend of supporting as many devices as long as possible, Sony. thats the way to go.

  • Doubleyoupee

I will be surprised if Z/ZL/ZR gets it, but then again I didn’t think they would give it lollipop.
Great choice though, 5.0 works great on Z/ZL/ZR and they deserve it, phone looks as if it’s a new model.

  • electrash

Well, i can only say if Z3 dosent get update for Android M i am done with Sony.

I had Satio, which they dumped,
    Then Xperia Arc, they dumped,
Xperia S first sony smartphone with lot of problems and they dumped
Xperia Z1 which they still support, i guess.
And now Z3, so be good sony. I am big fan of Sony, but i am paying a lot every year almost to have best from Sony, and i dont get “best”…

  • wil Rock

    thanks a lot…
is there a chance that my device will be bricked if i flash it?

  • Since Android M will be avaible for Xperia series not before Q2 2016, I guess that Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3+ would be getting the updates.

  • Kunal Shukla

only the z2 and z3 series from current xperia’s

  • aiamkesz

Don’t worry, your phone won’t brick if firmware is good and official. I guess it won’t void your warranty too unless you unlock the bootloader for custom roms.

  • wil Rock

    it’s flash time

  • Wolfing
  • Shravan SP

I’m a ZR owner and I’m not going to ask android M on my phone!
Sony has done a great job updating each and every time since 4.1. Actually i never thought sony would give lollipop.
Surprised to see that and Sony, you won my heart and my next phone would be definitely yours! If it’s good :p

  • Shravan SP

Satio and arc runs symbian right??? What updates are you expecting from it??
And Xperia S, they could have given one more update..
And they still support z1 and will z3

  • Shravan SP

    I’m using ZR.
I got 4.2,4.3,4.4.2,4.4.4 and now lollipop..
    Possibly 5.1 tooo!!
    That’s 6 major upgrades!!

  • Pankaj MAHESH

Any news about lollipop update for c6602 india?

  • Shravan SP

Flash using flashtool or wait for a few days

  • Pankaj MAHESH

    Again few days..!

  • laci_csk

All phones what have now Lollipop

  • zeoxzy

  • zeoxzy

I flashed lollipop onto my xperia z2. First ever time i’d flashed and it was super easy, but I understand if you’re feeling nervous about doing it.

  • Shravan SP

If you want it now, flash the os using flashtool..

  • Yann /D

I won’t be upset if there is no” M” for my xperia z. I got mine since the release and I am happy. No other phone manufacturer would have updated such an old device to lollipop. And in the worst case i’ll just flash a new rom.

  • Ali Bach-Tobji

    Xperia z2

  • Yann /D

    Keep on dreaming…

  • Jonathan Bratanata

i am very proud of the fact the xperia Z has been updated since 4.1…. for M maybe z1 and newer, but sony could surprise us once more

  • Robson Kanyama

It’ll start from Xperia Z1, Z2 & Z3 series and all newer released devices.
Can’t wait to see it on my Xperia Z2. #Proud-Sony-owner.

  • Sadman Khan

It’s really nice to see people here appreciating Sony for a change :D

  • Pingback: ¿Qué tablets de Sony actualizarán a Android M?()

You’ll receive it tomorrow at 2pm,don’t worry

  • Exodite

I would have to go with Z2-series and up, and available around this time next year or slightly earlier. ~April perhaps.

  • Prasanna Nayak

Yes they can give the new update to the older devices…

  • subrat kumar

    How do u know???

  • Melfes Wired

well, i think, only the first generation will probably not have the M, and the Japanese variantes… Just give Kitkat back to my Xperia SX, damn you, docomo!

  • Pankaj MAHESH

    How do u know?

  • Melfes Wired

actually i dont think any mobile phone with Snapdragon 8260 inside gets an official Lollipop update nor Kitkat or even ICS

  • mUSICA

who knows …older z series may get android M… or may not

  • Maurice Phoenix

I Think It Possibly…After All Z Is SONY High End Device…Maybe…

  • karamelakimo

If sony make Android M available for Xperia Z family that would be a big surprise for costumers and may be by this they will show costumers how they are precious for Sony

  • dinesh

    Your Wright

  • Tochi nwodu

Tired of Android anyways when was it they released lollipop
    Now M

  • lolop

I’ve got an XPERIA Z1C and I doubt I’ll be seeing Android M for it. Just being a realist. Sorry.

  • Jecht_Sin

There should be a law forcing phone manufacturers to upgrade the OS in all their devices above the minimum requirements for the new versions. I’m sick of this Android lottery.

  • Pankaj MAHESH

See sony xperia z honkong page..lollipop rollout hk in today..see date

  • aiamkesz

Same here. Thank you, Sony. :-)

  • aiamkesz

Lollipop update is big enough a surprise for me, though. I don’t care for Android M because they’ve done their best. Just my opinion. :-)

  • marcy_ff2

    z3c , z2 tablet, z4 tablet and z3c tablet as well

  • marcy_ff2

Except it will take them 1 year from yesterday to release it

  • Sergio

For me, that’s a custom rom sir. If it’s not coming from sony, then it’s not official. And as you wrote in your page, you need to unlock the bootloader, so that the program is able to flash a different kernel than stock. Curious.
By the way, and to prevent any scam, first provide us a video where it’s shown a Xperia M2 with a fully working and optimised lollipop rom, and with fully working cameras. Only in that case I would take into account buying your ‘software upgrade’. You know M2 doesn’t have that much development, but the 5.0 roms out there, like FXP Aosp, official AOSP builds, CM12.1 & Omni 5.1 are all a disaster. The rom cookers are doing a good job, but none of them are reliable as to use as default/daily rom. And cameras and not working in any… So when you get that working let me know ;)

  • Yasiru Theekshana

yea. I think Xperia Z will be skipped

  • fried_egg

Any phone over 3 years old is unlikely… Their resale value has dropped to near zero and most phones are sold on a less than 36 month plan meaning they have been replaced. The second hand market is not as important to Sony who sell new phones. The question over the internal sealed battery lasting 3 years with poor “charging” techniques also limits the chances of that. As I do not see fingerprint scanning being mandatory or in low end new phones (to start with) I don’t think it will be a reason “not to” upgrade a handset unless it is used as an excuse. I can’t see the Z or my Z1 getting it

  • Fadi Obaya

    Of course. :)

  • Doubleyoupee

Not really, flashtool downloads official ROM.
If you want you can flash a pre-rooted ROM, or make one yourself, since there’s no root method yet after you flashed.

  • Kima

    I think the same…

  • laci_csk

Yes because is it a new version, released.

  • I would be *VERY* surprised if they don’t put it on the Z3. Surprised and a bit miffed. :-)

  • Pankaj MAHESH

Yes i know its a new version but brother i m talking about new date and zr and zl global page show the new version.

  • roeshak

What planet are you living in. The s4,m7,g2 and others all have been updated to android lollipop. These are all phones that were released at our around the same time as your Z. The Z just feels older because of Sonys 6 month cycle releasing so many flagships in-between!
Stop praising Sony needlessly for doing what others have done! Lollipop was released last year while the Z was still covered by Google’s 2year support policy. The fact that it’s come to the Z after two years is a different matter but the Z by all account was entitled to it.
Going by Sony’s track record of ditching older devices, it was surprising and pleasing to hear they would be updating the Z because none of us expected it.
Don’t praise them needlessly for stepping up to where their competitors already were.

  • Pankaj MAHESH

NOW..india sony support page now showing lollipop released for zl and zr

  • roeshak

There is a huge question mark on whether Z1 and Co will get it. Manufacturers are only obliged by Google to support front line devices for 2 years. By the time Google releases android m into the wild with the nexus 7 this Oct, the Z1,z1c and ultra would have past that 2 year mark. If Sony do it, it would be as a good will gesture

  • Peter Lahti

Well, I would want to get that update on my older Xperia Z, I understand that Sony can’t update older models forever, but in my case, and many others I think, that if I had the money to buy a newer model I would do it at once. But I can’t afford to buy a newer model, so I sincerely hope that Sony will give us with older models this new update. I think that it should be very good for Sony to get new customers if they see that the Sony Company takes very good care of their customers even if they have a older model. Like it’s today, I am very glad to have a Sony made phone and other electronics at home, because they really care of all their customers and because Sony is the Top of the world in electronics. So I would be a bit sad if I don’t get the M.
(p.s. I’m sorry for spelling errors, but I’m Swedish)

  • Shubham Navale

    Xperia C3 will get M

  • Bradley Davis

Your a disgrace to the community selling Roms.

  • Achot Asrian

just ceck our website to see when it will be available, we also inform about new devices support in our facebook page, if the firmware is not stable as stock we will simply not release it, if the firmware is released then its close to stock, and for camera you shuld ceck our facebook page again :) we have sony xperia z3 camera app, and not aosp

  • Gitarooman

probably all the one that use the same SoC

  • rubinaish

I can’t hear anymore those saying they’re happy that their Z got all the way up from 4.1 to 5.0 and will even get 5.1.
First, they released the Z with 4.1 while 4.2 was already out, so they had to update. Then, you repeatedly forget that every other manufacturer updated it’s 2013 flagships to Lollipop, and that way before Sony, for example Galaxy S4, One M7 and the other ones. There was never a doubt those would not get 5.0. So don’t act like Sony did something special here, everything we got so far had to be granted. And concerning 5.1, no one besides Telstra said anything about it. And somehow I tend not to believe them.

  • Eddy Eddy R

im ZL, M2 owner and i want Android M. PLease!!

  • dreamgs1

lets first get the lollypop that is announced long time back.
It is of no use to discuss on android M.

  • Eddy Eddy R

    ZL please !!!

  • hocestquisumus

Given how similar the flagship models are I’d be surprised if Sony passed up the chance to create some goodwill. Given that M should once again run on even lower specced devices, there really is no reason for them to not bring it to the Z1 forward.

They should hurry a little this time.

Alright, who am I kidding. CM will beat them by 8 months or so.

  • Lucian

The biggest problem with Xperia S was having Snapdragon S3 inside which was abandoned by Qualcomm so Sony unfortunately couldn’t update even if they wanted to. I also had XS before Z3C and it served me well for the time being. Battery was biggest negative side of XS IMO.

But if you consider that they just updated even Z series to Lollipop I think that Z3 series will get many updates in future.

Whatever gets it is bound to take ages…..

  • bilomar

If z3+ gets it z3 will get it too I think.

  • rubinaish

You tend to forget that 4.2 was already out for some months when your phone was released, so don’t count it as an update. That one should have come out of the box.

  • rubinaish

    I couldn’t agree more.

  • Achot Asrian

We are the company that does whats nobody does, and we also help the comunity by contributing all our opensource works and by releasing cyanogenmod build on xda

XperiaOverlay firmware take months of hard work and its not possible to do it in our free time, thats why we decided to become a company that will offfer the impossible, but in same time a free alternative with cyanogenmod or Aosp releases on xda

  • Lubosko

googles 2 yr policy has nothing to do with manufacturers updates.. they are entirely in manufacturers hands, 2 yr update policy only applies on googles own, nexus devices

  • rubinaish

Yet 4.2 was already out at the Z’s release.

  • Sergio

  • Achot Asrian

thats not what our customers are thinking, you will be welcome to our store, when ther will be no more official or unofficial updates for your smartphone, we do work for Xperia users, and each satisfaction from them its a motivation for us. till that ther is abolutly no interest to purchasing our firmware as we dont add extra features in it, its the same firmware as the official

  • roeshak

No it applies to all. Google doesn’t have a time limit on updating nexus devices. That’s hardware dependent. Obviously manufacturers cannot abide by that across the board because of the number of devices they release but they’re bound to it for their top end offerings. Sony has struggled with this in the past but have met their obligations this time round. There probably won’t be an android m update for Z1 and Co because by the time m is officially released in Oct of this year, the Z1 would have gone past the two year mark.
Don’t get me wrong, when I say manufacturers are bound to it I mean to the spirit of the rule more than anything else. Google would certainly raise an eyebrow to any oem part of the android alliance that doesn’t try to live up to this code!

  • malinalaza

We didn’t yet receive Lollipop, and you are thinking about M? Optimists …

  • Luis Ramirez

Most were already 4.3/4.2 kinda was sad for the xperia z in the beginning

  • Timel

There’s no reason that the smartphone like Xperia Z or your ZR can’t get Android M.

  • Ajay Mohite

I have Xperia Z Ultra. Please give me update android m

  • Ritwij

    I’m guessing March 2016

  • Alvin Zahran Majid

i can’t believe the transition of Sony between today and 5 years ago in terms of software updates. they’ve changed.significantly.

  • Alvin Zahran Majid

Sony did great with software updates lately. if they give Android M to all Z series, especially others, Sony fans and users will never leave sony ever again. even with issues inside the phones, if they give us amazing software updates, they’ll win.

  • Z2 and Z3 definitely. Z1 maybe. Z, no.

  • Jacky

No for ZR it was a little behind at the beginning compared to Z. We didn’t get 4.2 until the end of summer lol

  • Jacky

But if nexus 4 isn’t getting it, that means we don’t expect the original z series to get it either lol

  • Sergio

“we have sony xperia z3 camera app, and not aosp”… What the f*ck?

And what about drivers? blobs? I didn’t mentioned the camera app being used, I mentioned the properly operation of it.
Sony didn’t released drivers for lollipop in yukon-based platform devices. It’s IMPOSSIBLE, literally, to have a fully working 5.0 rom, with as close to stock experience, provided that you don’t forge the Compilation / Android version numbers, which is easily noticeable by checking Api Level in build.prop or Antutu…

When you get all up and running let us know, fiera.

  • jmaxim917

    Z3, Z3+, Z4….

  • Timel

  • Achot Asrian

We support Kitkat for now, and working to bring Lolipop update, and they are stable, we are proud of our firmwares, about drivers and implementations, yes ther are somme of problems reguarding the drivers, especially for the camera, however we keep the same stock quality as we use proprietary Sony binary for camera to perform, and without them the Xperia Camera application will not even lunch so ther is a huge framework and native integreation of it. for stability and overall chipset driver updates, let us remind you that XperiaOverlay team has professional developers who are working on it and also contribute to the comunity, but the most importent part here is that we want to become the thir party company that will tproduce software upgrades for devices that are out of support from Sony, and with the help of our customers, we plan to colaborate with sony mobile to get necessery drivers for each of our firmwares, and also we tray to negociate with Qualcom to get adreno drivers that are optimized for each android version, and that why a company is needed a comunity is good but the comunity also need a company who will talk for them, and all those benefits will be shared as binary or as source code depanding on legals, to help the comunity.

we continue our works and we continue to grow up as a company that will change the future of abandoned xperia devices,

ther is another point which is importent too, we will soon release a uprade for the Xperia X10, yes the X10 will get android kitkat with the firmware of Z3, lighter version of caurse due to its low ram and storage capacity, and a free cm11 version we also plan to release lolipop AOSP or CM12 or 12.1 for that device,

all you have to do is wait for it and ceck time to time our facebook page or our website for news.

  • Siddharth S

Hi SONY. I’m a ZR owner and its been a pleasant experience with Sony. It would be wonderful if you are able to pull off M for Z series though. I think you have excellent developors in your team to pull it off well.
    Thank you,
    A loyal sony user.

  • lol do you really expect sony to survive that long to see the launch of that M crap? Delusional to say the least.

I think it is easy to assume anything which is the Z2 and above will get updated. The Z1 series is a doubt and other mid rangers too. I really would be surprised if Sony updated the original Z series to android M, but it isn’t the craziest story out there.

  • 5u5m1t

I really wouldn’t put Samsung as 5th, as HTC do a better job. Samsung more or less forget about anything which isn’t a flagship device.

  • df

lollipop does not fix anything, slow or no email push, notification still not wake up screen. M is just another junk.

  • Ryan Kumar Jassi

I think that all s800+ Sony devices should get android m as for the older z series I still think they have the potential to run android m so well just have to wait and see

  • Raj Singh

Anything Z3 and over should qualify…

Android M is meh. I just want Android 5.1. Android M won’t improve my experience of my ZR. Like, the fingerprint won’t help me with anything, ZR don’t support a fingerprint scanner. Support for USB-C won’t help me with anything, dual-window use for a screen of a size of 4.55″? Seriously? What else do we have.. The battery improvement? I don’t care, I charge my phone every night, and ZR last the whole day, no problem. Android pay? I won’t/can’t use it. I just want the HD voice and possibly memory leak fix(I haven’t experienced any memory leak while I’ve been using lollipop, but if the memory leak is a known problem in lollipop, I want it fixed, rather than experiencing it).. But don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of nice features in Android M, just most of them I can’t use or I won’t use. The only awesome feature I miss is the controlling of what apps can access. Like disable Facebook from have access of my microphone for instance.

The Z1 is a lot like the Z2 when you compare the ROM’s. There’s just changes to do with the camera and configs, so as long as the base ROM is working fine then all they would have to do is update the device config for the Z1 and recompile against it. So the Z1 would get a fully working version of Android M in under an hour.

  • Okazuma

    Sure on Z3+, Z3,Z3c, Z2
    Maybe on Z1,Z1c
    Not on Z

  • apolloa

My Z3 Tablet Compact will obviously get it as will the other Z3 range, I would also say the Z2 will and would even guess the Z1 range may also get it as they are getting Lollipop. I don’t think anything older will get it though.

  • Since several of the devices are similar in spec they could all get the update, when it works for one it wouldn’t be that much work to make it work for yet another.

I hope they will upgrade all the same that got 5.0, it would show a commitment to the devices and establish a solid reason to buy xperia.

Really want it like now on my Z2, but not going to root it so will wait.

  • shyam

Would xperia tablet z is in the list or not
    Will it get update

  • subin salim

Updates will release Z3, Z3+, Z4 (tablet) and after Z2 (series) will get the updates.. This time sony will say sorry to Z1 and Z series..

  • electrash

Arc runs android, it came till ICS which broke everything.

And satio runs symbian, in that date when they released it was old, and then said “we will not update it anymore”

    ???? $83 /hour @mi20//

  • agastya

andriod m will come to z ultra divise

  • Ariya SD

I think it’s possible for the Z to be skipped, but I don’t think they’ll skip the Z1.

  • Swarnava

Proud to have the lollipop update
Would be more proud to get the android m

  • Paul Muad’Dib

Not much hope for Z, but there is a small posibility for Z1, Z Ultra and Z tablet. I’m sure that the Z2 and over will receive the M(uffin).

  • Timel

    That’s just like Sony.

  • ToharLalua

First let me have the lollipop on my Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact here in India before we start dreaming about Android M.

  • Endrjiiu

SONY should update the whole xperia z series because it’s the “premium” one “gold”.

  • Armin Arian

I got a z1 and a z3, but I would be really pissed off if the z1 did not get the update. They really pushed me on the edge with the timing of their update to the z3 and especially with the z3. My M7 got the update earlier and its like 6 month older than the z1 and has a snapdragon 600. come on sony don’t dissapoint

  • Mateusz Wojtkiewicz

Z1 up although I’m hoping my Z will get it also. If not – not a huge deal since it’s just a minor update.

  • vigneshprince

Xperia Z2 will get it guess.

  • Tom

To be honest,i am surprised that my Xperia z1 has 5.0.2 ,but Sony is the most generous of them all when it comes to upgrades. But i hardly think Z1 will get M.

  • Rizqi Angga

    xperia t2 ultra, hopefully haha

  • Rahul Kate

  • Z Ultra and Z Tablet user, I’d not be surprised if I didn’t get M update, nore would I be upset. I’m pretty fine with Lollipop. Will update my phone next summer anyway. Tablet will probably last longer.

  • ddsenlong

    Xperia E1

  • Msshiroi

I just want to know when my z1 l39h in china can receive the update of lolipop :(

  • Stemro

Just a note; Google isn’t actually a “manufacturer”, all the Nexus devices are made by other manufacturers (for example the Nexus 6 is by Motorola, the Nexus 9 is HTC) and just marketed by Google.

  • Paul M

I think Z3, Z3S and Z4 will probably get Android M, but not the Z2, Z1, Z or Z Ultra devices (tablets or phones).. basically nothing that was launched before summer 2014.

  • Nur Hossain

I have just updated my XPERIA Z.Now iam very happy.

  • AaRaV $HaRMa

SONY should update the whole xperia z series because it’s the “premium” one “gold”.

  • laci_csk
  • Robin

I’m a Xperia zr user and so much happy with lollipop update.I won’t be upset if I don’t get Android M.Sony did a great job and thanks a lot for supporting older z series.love you Sony Xperia forever ^_^

  • Elia

I hope to fix the camera stpoing and warmth of processer in z1

  • Carlos Gonzalez

Definetly I’ll be upset if I can’t get the M-version of android for the next year in my XperiaZ1. I would like to have it!! :)

  • Rad

please update android m to sony xperia Z too

  • Himanshu Mehta

First of all, I would urge Sony not to keep waiting Xperia users for an update for Android M. Just look at the Apple, they guys do not let apple users wait long for OS update. Make is fast men

  • Sudhanshu

The thing is that the android m is the finalised version of the lollipop so we deserve thus update I have a xperia ZR and every bit of it’s hardware is wel ready for the update and is not yet 3 years from the date of release of my phone (it was released in 2013 ) so according to Sony’s 3 years update policy we are still deserving candidates for the android m update after the update there is nothing more the original z series users will ever ask for but for the android m update the original z series totally deserve it…

  • Mayckel

I certainly would like to see me Xperia ZL / ZQ running Android M.
