Xperia Z3 shown to outperform its successor the Xperia Z3 Plus

Xperia Z3 outperformance_0When a company launches a new flagship mobile device, there are certain things that are a given, including that the new flagship should improve on the original whether that be on design, performance and/or other features. When it comes to Sony’s latest smartphone, the Xperia Z3+/Z4, things have been complicated by the use of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset that appears to need a level of CPU throttling to keep temperatures under control.

We’ve already reported on the fact that there was a good chance that the use of the Snapdragon 810 chipset would show little, if any, improvement over the Snapdragon 801 chipset used in the Xperia Z3. Now a video comparing both devices shows the Xperia Z3 outperforming Sony’s latest flagship in real world tests, loading apps and games faster. Check out the video below (in Vietnamese).

Thanks Edison and Wael!

  • Zack Mills

    Oh that is not good…

  • Yesé

There is a clear speed difference…. Launching a Snapdragon 810- smartphone does not seem good to me… Hope Sony moves on quickly and launches an outstanding Z5 next fiscal year.

  • Shehab Skull

Mmmm maybe the z3 plus was heating in this video and that’s why the z3 was able to beat him..

  • Doubleyoupee

I thought this would be because the Z3+ would overheat, and downclock.

But it’s faster even in regular use..! WHAT

  • luigi

Sony should have gone with sd805! 64bit is only useful if the ram is 4gb and above!

  • Who cares? #WaitForZ4

  • Jonfensu

The advantages of 64bit is not only support for 4gb of RAM !!! Damn , Do a research

  • Tangent Lin

After 1 year of waiting, can’t see significant improvement on performance but even more worst, downgrade on performance and bringing heat issue? Sony did not do some research before using Snapdragon 810? Even I’m not on purpose doing research also know this issue. Not sure how many times Sony still wanted to disappoint their user or fans.

  • hansip

Do the benchmark under water just for the lulz! In all seriousness, it is expected. Only need proper battery life testing.

  • The_Newtype

    Very interesting.

In other news, as anyone had a ghost update appear on their Z3? I just had a notification show that their was a firmware update available, but, when I allowed it to proceed, it seems like my phone just rebooted and didn’t do anything. I’m still on .28.

  • Chitti- The Robot

    Z3 owner and proud!

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Yeah, z3 in flight mode z3+ not and probably a pre release firmware version, and discordance in timing of starting the test by 2 seconds, to create visual illusion of difference in speed….guy tipping like mad on z3+ to create an illusion of unresponsivness
Its not even the fanboy side of me, it is just obvious as the clear sky above…
Why do you really post this troll made crap…?

  • Snapdragon 810 v2.1 still overheating even when it’s slower than Snapdragon 801.
Since they said 815 is not coming, 810 v3.0 for the new Moto X and Xperia Z5 is their last chance to get it right…

  • ALEX

It happened to me on my Z2 yesterday!

  • J Cav the Great

    Make that 2!

  • J Cav the Great

I’m done with the “numbers wars”. I got my Z3 running at 2.5ghz…its zippy. And with lollipop’s ART runtime..Apps load and reload fast.Battery life is the best I’ve ever had on a smartphone. HIFI Audio.I will keep this phone until it just doesnt work anymore..#HappyCamper

  • Take it easy bro!
I’m sure my z2 will even outrun the z3+ so don’t be surprised. I’m sure in order to check heating, the 810 is being throttled. Maybe in future software updates might remove that restrictions so 810 can fly way the wag it should.

Until then, take the article as is.

  • Do that, my bro!

  • Tangent Lin

How do you archive a better battery life? I found that kitkat has better bettery life? I only get max 1.5 days of average usage on stamina mode.

  • Timel

Yeah it’s not good at all

this speed test is not cool enough to make people buy Z3 or other Xperia flagship phones anyway, many people experience nightmares with Xperia flagship smartphone cameras.

So shut up and fix your shitty camera first Sony!!

  • Timel

    The wait was over

    Fly to Japan ^_^

  • Utsav Shah

Exactly my friend. Z3 nails every aspect of a smartphone.

  • mohsen

    Z3+ use 3GB DDR4 and Z3 use 3GB DDR3. 810 in HTC M9 was better than samsung S6.
    is that video true?

  • mohsen

    i guess bought by samsung

  • Emil Oskarsson

im still using DALVIK on my Xperia Z (android 4.4.4 kitkat Existenz Ultimate), since im waiting for the lollipop based rom, and even my phone is “zippy” as you call it ;)

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Um… I got the shitty camera part. Not so much everything before it

  • spade
  • Luis Ramirez

The z4/z3+ physical look should of been the z3 from the start (no 810) and should of given sony some more time for the z4

  • jonoave

For me, I found that Google Services (LocatIon) was eating up a lot of battery life (it was higher than OS and Screen even though Location was set to battery-saving). So I turned it off.

  • Bradley Davis

    You sir are a idiot.

  • Nick .

if i could downvote your comment i would.. oh wait i can and i just did see the video before you post anything

  • Bradley Davis

Its already out. Its the same as the z3+

  • illstplaya .

I don’t know about you guys but it’s pretty clear that he isn’t pressing the apps at the same time. This video proved nothing.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Why should I take it easy bro. This viatmese video is a deliberate scam…
One of many all around the web…
Just like the one article about 810 overheating whilst all, even exynos7 overheat the same
So, you have the right to be gullible…
But dont prophet me to take this crap and alike easy…
Cause it only shows z3+ prerelease unit being as responsive as z3, and giving out faster fps graphics…

  • puu

    happened to me on ZL
update with 2 rebootes and same firmware number

  • Vjekoslav Andric

It proved this blog posts scam videos to trollfeed the anti sd810 bunch too…

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Sorry to mention this but my z2 is running art with existenz Y and its also very zippy/fast more than my z was but I think the z and z2 were the best phones Sony released. Xperia Z the spark that started it all. Such a great device

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

See if he can compare it with a one plus one there very fast too and both have similar specs

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

I dont think it will stop working most likely gonna be your phone for life #LifeKeeper

  • Siyam Hossain

No hope for me. Z ultra might be my last sony phone. Searching for a new brand. But there isn’t many options. M9 is flop, s6 is good but i hate touchwiz, i don’t like lg phone coz they look like toy n ui is horrible, nexus 6 isn’t that great. Oh God. I like xperia ui, hardware and battery life. But z3+ has so many issues like performance, overheating. Now there is only one brand – apple. But i don’t wanna switch to ios.

  • Tibor Hornyák

  • jakobd.

Maybe it creates the Sony Z3 + to optimize so that it no longer overheated, even faster than is now and a lot of liquid and running optimally. I very much hope have I pre-ordered it in aqua green :-). Should appear in Germany on June 26, as far as I know

  • Timel

    You’re too blind and biased
Is it hard for you to accept the truth?

Brainless fanboy like you are so worthless, so annoying ,shame on you!!!

    Whatever Don’t cry!

  • raju

In Android Xperia is the best

  • Vuyo Ncube

Looks like I’m taking a break from new premium Android smartphones for a few months:

    1. SD810 is DOA for 2015. Samsung, Apple and Nvidia will crush it with the Exynos 7422 (upgraded Mali GPU, custom Mongoose CPU probably), A9 (A8X with improved process node with a GPU that dances around cheap laptops most likely) and Tegra X1 in a new Shield tablet (king of Android gaming performance) respectively. But the Note 5 will be too expensive, new iPhones will suck at battery life (again) and the next Shield might run too hot or suck at battery life too.

    2. Neither TSMC nor Samsung has said jack about their FinFET process for Qualcomm. Very high chance the SD820 won’t be ready before 2016.

    3. Mediatek and Intel won’t catch up anytime soon.

    4. AMD’s new graphics card Fury line looks amazing (on paper). How does a 4GB graphics card beat with a 12GB Titan X at 4K benchmarks while consuming less power and costing less?! Dang.

  • Timel

    What’s wrong with you?

Because SD810 sucks Face it! Because XperiaBlog ain’t blind and biased like you, it’s good if Sony see this article and then they improve their product.

  • Alumine

I think they must have and Qualcomm kept assuring them it would work. They get the 810 probably a year or so before the phones are released to the public, and by the time they realise that the overheating issue is there to stay, it’s already too late to go back to the drawing board.

  • Lito

you sir are an idiot, go check out the videos of M8 VS M9, SAME ISSUE, god accept the fact that S810 is a fail. Jesus, go do your research before posting. Thus, flight mode doesnt affect the results, there are no internet/wifi on the Z3+ also there is no sim card inserted either. Your argument is INVALID.

  • Tangent Lin

Ya.. Is turned off, still draining battery that causes me downgrade back to kitkat

  • Billy de Fretes
  • XperiaNexus

let’s make Xperia Nexus happen! –

  • XperiaNexus
  • Tangent Lin

not an valid excuse, they have the responsibility to change the chipset or downgrade it to 808, 808 having same size with 810.

  • J Cav the Great

I rarely have my phone on full brightness..I would say 65% is good for my daily use (I’m indoors Alot).. Turn off Sync, turn off GPS, I don’t use Bluetooth. Add Stamina mode. I let Lollipop manage my RAM..I do not close Apps.I leave them in background. Unless I don’t use them for days. Force closing Apps means they have to process again to reopen..I have great battery life no complaints there…

  • Alumine

Is it pin compatible (i.e. drop in replacement)?

  • Vjekoslav Andric

You watched this video and you call ME blind?! Go talk to a mirror….

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Calling me an idiot wont change the fact this video is a scam….
Have done my research and I do not see how 810 is a fail…its not as efficient as exynos7, heats up as much as exynos7 and previous sd bunch, thorottles somewhat more but so does the exynos7, but has its advantages over the rest…

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Your reply just proves my point…
Btw. did you already accept the fact z3+ camera does a better job than g4, or are you still on fanboy feed?

  • Vjekoslav Andric

A scam video is a material for improvement?!?
I hate gullible people closing eyes to obvious scams and calling others fanboys for it….
    So hate me…ate you ;-)

  • Thariq Mohammed

No one come close to Xperia UI

  • Utsav Shah

wait. let me install a cyanogenmod and then my z3 will be as fast as a one plus one.
The point is z3 packs all cool sony features with a decent power house. See if you can get ISO 12800 or DSEE HX or waterproofing or stereo speakers on a one plus one.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

her boobs….are them made of plastic? they “vibrate”….OMG, and look at the shape of it, damn you

  • mountain

    Is my Z3+ fake?

  • Chan Kin Cheung

you should not be worried, you should be happy. You purchased one of the best few phone on that batch, for exactly the same price! lucky you

  • Matt

Jesus people, calm your tits. It’s easier to say “I told you so ” than giving a useful suggestion here in xperiablog. Heck it was even “I told you so “, if we look at couple of you a couple months ago screaming and having having your hand in the air for snapdragon 810, and all that saying “Sony will fail if they use 805 on their flagship “.

Don’t say to me “I didn’t say that ” well many did. Nook now and here is your 810. While I’m typing this from the z3.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

true, many people just change their faces but they seldom remember what they had said. just like in HK, we have lost our universal suffrage, but people who just vetoed it are now condemning the fact that we lost universal suffrage

  • The real Z4/5 Whatever you call it

  • Exactly, I agree with you, why everybody is not noticing it???

  • marcyff2

existenz is the best rom! period

  • marcyff2

it depends when and how you ran the benchmark. Most website reviewers run them on the first boot which causes lower scores due to the OS and Apps trying to achieve the best compatibility with the phone. I am guessing you ran yours after a couple of days of getting it. On second or third boot,, and with no apps running on the background?

  • marcyff2

Don’t worry. Its normal for a phone to have such problems in the beginning, sony is good at patching things after release. If you look at original z2/z3 reviews both would say the software is buggy, or it randomly crashes. But I have a z2 and very rarely do I have an app close on me (and when it does is youtube), I know a lot of people with a z3 who don’t see crashes either.

  • marcyff2

it can be, but the phones are not performing under the same circumstances. the z4 is without a sim (which causes the phone to look for network and/or wifi) and the z3 is in airplane mode which cuts that search. The z3 has had software updates to smothen the rom since release, while the z4 had 1 software update to date. The z3 is most likely been used for a while, while the z4 is probably on first boot, therefore underperforming as the os and apps are optimizing. what i am saying is take this information with a grain of salt.

  • Sweggity

I am using the Xperia Z2, awesome battery life, no issues with speed, good camera… It just works for me. Waiting for the Z5

  • marcyff2

I don’t know why your point 4 discusses desktop graphics cards. but titan x, like every other titan is a card for high level video editing. Therefore using a large amount of VRAM. the gtx980ti largely outperforms the titan x with half of its ram and half of the price. The reason is gtx980ti is a graphics card made for gamers and optimized for them too. Same with Amds’ new lineup

  • marcyff2

OPO or G4 are good alternatives, if you truly want to move away from sony. But the next flagship (sony y) is suppose to change the style.

  • Adhi S

Yes.I have been using Xperia Z2 for the last 7 months.I have used Samsung Htc phones earlier. I will say I am very much satisfied with the Xperia Z2, it’s the allrounder.Esp.the battery life is very good.
Web browsing and all other applications work seamlessly.

  • Make that 3… Z3!!! :-)

  • Vuyo Ncube

I’m considering PC gaming as a new hobby/interest (if I could ever build my own rig or find a good enough gaming laptop). Smartphone news has been pretty dry and predictable for half of 2015. Practically all flagships fumble where they shouldn’t (average battery life, overrated cameras, unrefined processors, missing microSD card support etc.). They are better than my Z1 but not to the point where it needs replacing.

PC gaming slowly became a distraction worthy of my time.

  • Timel

“z3+ camera does a better job than g4”
    LOL it’s freaking ridiculous
How dare you said that uh?
Please stop lying to yourself, stop talking bullshit, stop defending Sony, you need to stop being a worthless fanboy, you don’t want Sony to improve their products, do you?

C’mon You need to wake up and smell the coffee, you must walk out of your cave please! Many people in real life know that Sony flagship phones have always had the shitty cameras, many people experience nightmares about Xperia flagship smartphone cameras there’s only brainless fanboys still lick Sony balls about this mistake

    And like its predecessors
Z3+ camera is going to be the worst smartphone camera when compare to competitors

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

    Yep no doubt about it

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Fair point I compared my z2 with brothers one plus one he got custom cm12 rom and kernel so the tests not all that fair since I cant unlock my bootloader but both devices are very fast the only reason people buy the one plus one is kuz its a cheaper z3 without the specs you mentioned id still perfer a z series phone though

  • Vjekoslav Andric

So, you are the worst and biggest fanboy here…wonder from which side? Hmm…

  • Siyam Hossain

Yes. That’s why it is hard to find a better option.

  • Siyam Hossain

I will wait until September for new Sony flagship. I really want to buy a Sony phone. But z3+ is a crap. My old z ultra is working fine. Snapdragon 800 is really a superb processor.

  • Siyam Hossain

100% true. Never saw any better ui. It’s simple & classy.

  • Siyam Hossain

    Did u mean oneplus one?

  • DonnaRSkinner
  • mohsen

your Z3+ is final version and not portotype.

  • Apollo89

Just save yourself some money and buy the Xperia Z3. It’s cheaper and better than the Z3+. Otherwise wait for the next flagship with Snapdragon 820.

  • Nodar Sixarulidze

Xperia Z3 vs Z3+ speed test

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

I cant see why sony dont support no z devices like this too though I see no mid range Lollipop devices from 2013 same time as z and the sp can easily run lollipop

  • Emil Oskarsson

SP is a closed chapter for a reason, i think it didnt sold that well thats why they dropped support for it :p

  • azzido

As a Z2 user I am waiting for Z5 that will bring better, faster and cooler CPU, 4GB of RAM, completely new curved camera that will outshine competitors and bigger, 5,5 or even 5,7 better screen. New design is much more than expected too including premium materials. Hoping for oleophobic sapphire glass. They need to improve, otherwise they will be finished. See what LG is doing with G4 plus.

And add bigger battery Sony, not thinner device, noone cares about 1 or 2 milimeters, we do care about bigger battery and starting with Z3 it is getting only smaller, the reason I skipped it.

  • skyxz

    Make that 1!

  • aerial

I think a universal suffrage with a committee comprising of pro-Beijing elites handpicking the final candidates couldn’t be called the true universal suffrage

  • Ndlelenhle Njoko

I have to agree with you. SD810 aside, just by looking at the video, it’s not the kind of comparison I was expecting; there being delays in buttonpresses and all.

  • Ndlelenhle Njoko

It’s pointless, bru. You don’t need to entertain that.

  • Giannos

SD805 on Z3+ would be a dream come true for all the POWER users in the android world…pleaseee god make this!

  • Nightmare

    EXACTLY!!! Me too

  • Eduardo Otero

I have found the trick, besides everything known that SD810 have troubles and all that stuff in that video Z3 is on airplane mode and Z3+ hasn’t even any SIM card so Z3+ will be using many resources trying to find the SIM and that fact makes it look slower than Z3 that isn’t worry about the SIM and has less processes on its SD801.

  • Abhinav Tella

The Z3+ has no SIM… so it’s ok to compare.

Either way the S810 based phones this year all have had heat issues, those that did not resorted to severe throttling/capping speeds.

Qualcomm really hurt companies this year, especially Sony/HTC. Both looked like they were making great progress till this S810 mess. Hopefully S820 helps with the recovery.

I think the Big.little thing is also partly the cause. Each cluster of CPUs in S810 runs at same clocks which adds to the heat problem.
Seems like a waste of silicon to have an extra cluster.

  • Abhinav Tella

The Exynos uses a smaller process and does not throttle as much. The S810 not only over heats but throttles severely due to it. If the S810 maintained the same performance level as the Exynos under load it would be much hotter.

There is no scam… at similar loads the S810 is hotter and throttles much more than the S801. With multiple sites testing and even carrier DoCoMo giving heat advisory to S810 devices you can’t pin it on some Samsung conspiracy. Samsung still uses Qualcomm CPUs in other devices and Qualcomms S820 will be produced by Samsung. Even LG shifted to the S808 for the G4.

Every chip maker has made mistakes like:

Intel P4 which per Mhz was worse than the P3 and a 2Ghz Athlon could out do a 3Ghz P4. Intel thought due to people believing more Mhz is better they could just increase clocks to compete till they had heat issues with 4Ghz… They recovered by going back to the P3 derived Core series.

nVidia made similar mistake with the FX5800 (overheated/underperformed) and 5 series in general which sucked. They made a great come back with the 6 series.

Basically Qualcomm screwed up… But they will recover.

  • dty13

    when will z5 out?
my z2 is broken.. I think i will wait for z5 but i cannot wait to long…

  • Chan Kin Cheung

i am sure by the time z5 arrives, your head is gonna fall off your neck becuz your neck get stretched too long. BTW, getting z5 is too far away now that your z2 has broken, i think it is better for you to get an z3 first
