Sony Concept for Android FirmwareWhilst we were not too surprised that screenshots of Sony’s Concept for Android software leaked yesterday, we are surprised that the actual firmware itself has leaked. This allows anyone with an Xperia Z3 (D6603) to try it out for themselves. The official trial is only available to 500 Sony Xperia Z3 users in Sweden.

However, if you don’t live in Sweden, or weren’t one of those selected, then you can download the firmware from the link below. Installing the firmware works the same as with any FTF firmware file using Androxyde’s Flashtool program. Be warned you will lose all of your data, but you can revert to stock Sony firmware be flashing an official Sony KitKat or Lollipop build.

Initial impressions for those that have tested it point to it being very similar to AOSP but with a few Sony applications baked in. The new software is fast and stable but doesn’t include some Sony features such as Stamina mode, Screen Recording and Xperia Themes.

Here’s a user comment from XDA member user91: “By the way, the ROM itself is absolutely nothing to excited about. Take any stock Sony Lollipop ROM, take away all the reasons for buying this phone (no double tap to wake, low brightness, no display enhancements, no sound enhancements) – well the camera works, and that’s it.

All of the installation information can be found in the links below. Do you plan to try it? Let us know in the comments below.

Why would you even spend your time & resources on something that is completly unnecessary & not new in anyway.
Y would i buy a Xperia if i don’t get the camera or the Stamina Mode or even the UI.
Could someone please explain this to me.

  • ????? ????????

You know that some people want a Sony Nexus, right? Well this would be the next best thing.

  • jxPerience

FU Sony for doing this to us… I will hate you i swear

  • jxPerience

I’m with you, lets go and leave this Sony Trashperia Mobile

  • Marinko Agic

    Only for Z3?

  • yes.

  • Samuel

    meh.

  • shhh

Isn’t this protected by a NDA?

  • XperiaBlog

We would have thought so. Somebody’s going to be in trouble….

  • Akand

Maybe for me too!! As long as fucking CEO isn’t replaced, Sony is going to die slowly.
I think he is working for Samsung in background.

  • The new software is fast and stable but doesn’t include some Sony features such as Stamina mode, Screen Recording…

Whoah! I’m all for a near-stock UI with fast updates, but if it means removing those two useful features, then no thanks!

  • Mohamed Eltantawi

Are you out of your mind? You are using a software that is in PRIVATE ALPHA, that is incomplete, that you are not even supposed to be installing probably, and you bitch about missing features?

Go read about how software development works, this will explain it to you.

  • Mohamed Eltantawi

The software just appeared in a PRIVATE ALPHA form, if this not tells you it is incomplete I don’t know what to say!

  • Øyvind Heddeland Instefjord

I am part of the test program thingy, and we were told to install this within today. To me that sounds like what we have is a core they are going to build upon, and later updates will add those feature.

  • Flythe

Wow, all these people complaining. It’s just a concept! Nobody ever said, we will see this on future Xperia devices. And even if we do, this concept just started beta stage. Neither is it complete nor ready for release. There will be probably a lot of changes, until it’ll finally hit the market. Please don’t whine over something, that isn’t even finished yet.

  • Incomplete or not, the features are missing, and they should add them back when the software is ready for prime time.

  • Srijan Chawla

Im all up for the Sony Nexus, but i want that to be purely stock android.
Keep the UI & the features for the Xperia range only, why would you give up your identity, something unique you possess for a device that’s not even solely yours.

  • That’s good. I don’t care much about my phone having an “unique UI”, but I don’t want to see features removed.

  • Srijan Chawla

I noe how it works & I’m not bitching about anything, im just expressing what a Sony user feels about this future development.
Im all against giving up something unique that this company possess to become something they are not.
& you might be the most intellectual guy here but learn to show some respect in this forum.
Thank you & kindly f off

  • ????? ????????

I know, I actually bought the z3c because I loved the Sony (Ericsson) UI since the x10 times (back then I’ve had a Huawei with complete Sony Ericsson theme).

  • Andre Lemard

Which they will. It’s like the Windows 10 Insider Preview. When it came out it barely had a few new features, and Microsoft continually added more and more until it was complete. I wonder what new features Sony may add to the concept though.

  • I will love to have this on my Z Ultra.
Please Sony make this avalible to my device!

  • Ça?atay

I hate this. Really. I mean if sony do this concept! i’ll be leaving. This is sucks. I don’t want to stock android! I want the old ui. Well improved old ui.
Sorry for my bad English. I am very angry right now.

  • ????? ????????

Are you from Sweden and did they make you to install this concept? Or is it optional?
You aren’t angry, you are being unreasonable with some other people that have similar thoughts.
(I bet this will be a down-voted comment)

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

My phone have never been this fast before, not even when it was new with KitKat. I’m really excited and can’t wait for the (if) final version of it to roll out. /Official Sony Concept User.

  • SUL

Why do they waste resources on this ?!

  • Thariq Mohammed

How camera perform with this concept firmware?
    Is it same as before?
    Any changes?

  • New keyboard update- Numeric Row and more word suggestions by long pressing on a suggestion

  • Thariq Mohammed

If anyone test it, please upload a pic
    (before and after )

  • Sadman Khan

It was included in 5.1.1 update

  • bilomar

I don’t like stock Android. They should go for the what’s new app design in my opinion.

  • Jecht_Sin

It’s an alpha build. Also private. Which is supposed to evolve following the user’s feedbacks. Sure it’s very minimal right now.

  • hocestquisumus

Interesting. Usually we’re complaining about lots of manufacturer crapware (I’m looking at you, Touchwiz). Now we’re complaining about a lack thereof.
    Interesting times.

  • bosas200

People just doesnt know what they want

  • Victor Rusu

You guys do know this is early unfinished software, right? They will keep adding features, this is just the base.

  • Melfes Wired

actually, i still prefer the old icon

  • Phantom Pt. I

Now if only it was there for Z3 Compact. I’d be right on it.

  • echomrg

ahemmm… i don’t use any of the features quoted at the end of the article “(no double tap to wake, low brightness, no display enhancements, no sound enhancements)”…

    I’m feeling a little stupid ;)

i’d actually love to use the double tap to wake but it constantly wakes the phone up while i have it in my pockets and that’s too annoying.

  • Andrew Erohin

Well, the only good thing I saw in this is that there are too little pre-installed software

  • dhinata

sony must give user option to use Xperia UI or Android Stock UI

  • echomrg

yeah, it’s getting a little ridiculous but, on the other hand, i know people that would swear by HTC Sense and never buy anything without it.

    to each his own.

i would love to be able to *easily* choose which manufacturer apps and services i have on my phone.

  • echomrg

did it ever actually stop any leak from happening?

  • echomrg

just remember to let me know in which trash bin you put your old phone! ;)

  • I got a Z1 on 5.0.2

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

I wonder… Does this build contain Cam2 API by any chance?

  • Hardal

We can all agree that we don’t want too fast updates, if you are going to cut from customizations.

We want UI like it was in Kitkat, everything is customized by sony, and that was great.

    Thumbs up if you agree

  • shhh

In this case, it would be easier to find whoever leaked it than finding those who leaks their new phones.

  • I wouldn’t mind loading Windows Phone 10 onto my Z3 and giving that a whirl…

  • Thanks @Oyvind! (I’m sorry, I don’t know how to tag you with your username starting with a “Ø”)

  • ShinOrochiX

I personally like this, clean AOSP style with Sony apps, stable and speedy. Although I don’t see this ever becoming mainstream, I believe that in Sony’s eyes this is just a side development thing. Sony’s GUI will probably stay as it is.

  • marcyff2

don’t even think it, Windows 10 mobile is horribly structured at the moment. So much they pushed the deadline back another month (november 2015)

  • Khillo81

Honestly! Some people just like to complain and jump to conclusions. With all that is happening in the world, people still have time to quibble over hypothetical scenarios… pathetic!

  • Pingback: That was quick: Concept for Android on Sony Xperia Z3 is available for download()

  • Sony’s apps are genuinely good. Plus its great to see a manufacture bake in useful and aesthetically pleasing apps.

  • Sadman Khan

So you got it via play store while we got it directly. Fair enough

  • *shrug* Unlike the Win10 preview, I would wait for the final release + 2 months (if it was even possible to load it.) I can almost not believe it, but my cellphone is more critical to me right now than my computer.

    Thanks dude.

  • Arda Akca

Told you dude. They will strip it apart. It will be extremely plain.

  • lovebmw

I LOVE IT…. and for the complainers, SONY should do a raw version just like that for the ones that want performance, little faster updates and less sony android OS layers, fallowed few months after by the sony version, which will take time and stuff in a separate addition. complainers can wait until that phone version come out.

  • hocestquisumus

Some are good. Some are forgettable. But I’m neck-deep in Google’s ecosystem so I don’t have much use for doubles anyway (I loved Album – but now there’s Photos).

  • lovebmw

i love the concept, it’s a dream come true, ou need less staff, water proof, incredibly fast…. we can ACTUALLY compete with a nexus now… crazy camera, which i wonder is it google software camera or sony?

i think the trend here is that people developed an automatic complaining response for anything.

  • lovebmw

i agree, and Sony called a concept to test the waters…. XPERIA BLOG, WE WANT A POLL…. who likes it, who does not, or should sony have two versions….

  • lovebmw

what about two versions of the software? one for sony integration and the other stock android.

  • Skipper

There is no increase in performance. I have run antutu and is the same, even a bit lower. I had official concept software

  • echomrg

maybe, if they actually cared to code some kind of security system in the software.
even if they demonstrated that the leaked version belonged to a specific individual they still would have to prove that he actually, pernsonally leaked it.

  • lovebmw

how interesting, logically, how could that possibly be? building over raw must add some sort of delay…. unless it is not as stock as it looks…. curiouse how nexus phones score on antutu vs sony? and is antutu the best tool to measure a phones performance?

  • shhh

If I remember it right, on the sign up page it says that the software will monitor the beta testers where personal details or usage or whatever info would be sent to Sony. I’m pretty sure they’d easily find an evidence. What they can do is at least kick the user out of beta testing.

  • Skipper

I don’t know, maybe just some numbers, but for me Sony official 5.1.1 is fast enough and i haven’t see some magic with this new project. The point of a Nexus smartphone is decent hardware, decent software and decent price. If you change this you will end up like Nexus 6. The point of a flagship is tons of features at a high price. Not high price for a stripped down smartphone. IMHO Official Sony is a good balance between heavy bloated TW and AOSP

  • Keion London

Can someone please suggest a transparent UI when giving their feedback. Thanks you in advance :).

need all the smart features + about damn time they have split screen multi tasking, small apps is old and outdated as hell

  • ndedecker

This. Album is nice, but Photos surpasses it in usefulness in almost every single way. I wish it could be fully integrated and used without other apps relying on Album.

  • iia3ezu

Still don’t like the 2×2 time display. It looks stupid. Can we please go back to one row of four numbers just like in KitKat 4.4.2? No need to bold the hour numbers.

  • Utsav Shah

    Exactly.

Personally I love this concept. Near stock android with all Sony goodies. Plus more snappier device.

  • Pavlos Hadj

Its too early to make speculations about the presence of xperia goodies such as stamina mode and sound enhancements. It might be just ui concept. Time will show

  • Roger Carp

You can use Digital Clock Xperia for that.

  • Akand

But skeleton shows the mature shape. If you have cat’s skeleton, it will obviously be a cat. It could be little fat or thin.
Don’t hope like frog’s larva stage. Sony isn’t like frog which can transform a fishy like larva to a matured frog.

  • Kunal Shukla

the current xperia software is perfect just add some features under the settings section and that’s it.

  • nfs2010

Did it improve (or worsen) battery life?

  • azzido

Looks the same. Do not see any difference, what is concept here?
Was expecting a kind of revolution and more stylish UI in comparison to stock.

In terms of look there is nothing new…

  • roeshak

Why is Sony calling stock android a concept!

  • roeshak

Why is Sony calling stock android a concept!

  • Mario Junior

Wow! Great concept. Something very different!

  • Pingback: Se filtra el Software de "Concept for Android" para el Sony Xperia Z3 | Pisapapeles()

  • WhyWai

    It’s a closed group test concept for a reason…
I’m sure Sony features will be added phase by phase….

  • Swaglord

When the full version releases, it may be having the display enhancements. I dont think sony will drop their prestigious features just like that. Near stock experience with Stamina, Sound enhancements, Display enhancements, themes? would be epic.

  • skyzo97

I like SONY phone except the stock ROM, because it heavy. Mostly I use CM11 instead stock on my xperia SP.

  • jxPerience

i never said i will throw my phone :), i’m just leaving Sony for good.

  • Sho Firdaus

lol It’s an alpha, it will definitely be incomplete

  • Skipper

No improvement, unfortunately. Is more or less the same in terms of speed, battery but with crippled features. So it was not interesting for me.

  • Alvin

like i don’t have anything better to do than to download this thing, even for testing..

  • Alvin

not really, i’m just being honest here, their ui since s6 is good now. but yeah, i don’t feel right about buying their phones. maybe i’m too obsessed with sony

  • Alvin

    i thought it’s still an alpha…

  • nfs2010

Oh :( Then there’s not much to gain. Thanks!

  • Haldi

Oh…. It got leaked… Now thats unexpected!

  • KayZey

I love it! Been using it since yesterday and frankly, I don’t miss any of the feature mention and the battery life is fine. Looking at around 4 hours of screen time and all day battery, can’t complain.

If they could make Remote Play work and PS4 controller connect work, I wouldn’t miss anything.

  • Aiden Pearce

how about something like this for a pull down notification!!!!

Late to the party… I’m just now enjoying 5.1.1 on my unlocked Z3 (D6603) on T-Mobile (USA). I’m not going to do anything to mess that up, or remove features.
