New Xperia Z5 picture leaks, plus further details on next week’s launch [Update]

by XB on 30th August 2015

in Rumours, Xperia Z5 series

Xperia Z5 Leak_1Sony Mobile will launch three new Xperia handsets next week which include the Sony Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium according to PhoneArena.

The same source provided a picture of the upcoming flagship in gold (see below), which shows Sony’s new fingerprint sensor as seen in previous leaks. If you look carefully, you will notice some of the other models in the background, including the teal-coloured version we leaked earlier in the week.

The three models will primarily differ as per below:
– Sony Xperia Z5: Features a 5.2-inch display with FHD (1080 x 1920) pixel resolution
– Sony Xperia Z5 Compact: Features a 4.6–inch display with HD (720 x 1280) pixel resolution
– Sony Xperia Z5 Premium: Features a 5.5–inch display with QHD (1440 x 2560) pixel resolution

If the above turns out to be true, then the Xperia Z5 Premium will not feature a 4K UHD (2160 x 3840) display, despite numerous evidence to the contrary. This was perhaps always a bit far-fetched for a H2-2015 launch, but it doesn’t rule out such a high-pixel density device appearing in 2016.

All three models will include a 23MP rear camera (as we confirmed earlier this week) with the ability to record 4K video. Other specs include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage. 8MP front-facing camera (so not the 13MP front-facing camera seen in the Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5). Sony Mobile’s press event takes place on Wednesday 2 September at 15.00 BST. We’ll bring you further news at that point.

Xperia Z5 Leak_1

Update: Looks like our scepticism around the screen resolution of the Xperia Z5 Premium was well founded as PhoneArena is now reporting that it will indeed sport a 4K UHD resolution 5.5-inch display. Plus, find some more pictures of the Xperia Z5 below.

Thanks to all that sent this in!

They are just gorgeous. I don’t care anything else!!

  • zu

    Snapdragon 810 :(

  • Chitti- The Robot

    Wow, Just Wow. Looks stunning.

  • jokensy

That volume button tho! Too low.

  • i really hope they didn’t go with that etched logo

  • Akand

No. Lost interest to go to Sony event at IFA.
    Snapdragon 810, 3 GB RAM….!!!!

  • wait i can’t see the etched xperia logo

  • Why can’t Sony make the front panel not all-black? That sucks especially if you have the gold one or any other color, ugh, and why is the volume button too low?

  • Kristo

is makes me really excited!! Does anyone know how long it usally takes them to be released in stores?

  • daviddang

It’s on the lower left hand side of phone. If you look at the picture of the etch you can see the phone icon on the lockscreen to get an idea of the orientation

  • daviddang

As much as I dislike it too, I mean the only other option is 808 bc the 820 isnt read yet :(

Qualcomm reaaally screwed up this year

  • Muhammed Irdem

The revised version will be used

  • Dave W

An extra 0.3″ display… Why bother?

  • eur3kasizm

And I thought Z5 is already premium.

  • vigneshprince

    it looked cool though!

  • vigneshprince

    yeah! hope so!

  • mountain

Usually by the end of the month

  • kido

wat about ois, full manual mode, raw etc?? :p im becoming impatient lol…So mid-ranger actually beats flagship in front facing camera ..lol

  • Emir Zarith

not a big mess to me since i’m left-hand user….i know it’s kinda irritating for right-hand user

  • vigneshprince

    just wait lol!

  • vigneshprince

    yeah!

  • Zeljko Kovacevic

hahahah SD 810 again make the same mistake

  • tmnd
  • kido

    hahahaha yeah i know..

  • kido

    the torques color though :D

  • Mike Gonzalez

they could’ve used a Mediatake Helio X10 or simply hold off releasing new phones until some upgrades are available

  • SeaTHX

and it create a better thumb grip when taking photoes as well :)

  • Sony remove Sony logo?

  • SeaTHX

Now the they know about the heating issue maybe Sony done something about it with the cooling inside….?

  • skyzo97

    1. 720p screen with adreno 430 will be badass, except the overheat.
    2. does sony can’t use exynos?
    3. i hope s810 will perform better than z3+/z4.

  • vigneshprince

    yeah

  • AndropaX

    Amoled display ?

  • SONY only

    So sexy !!!

  • vigneshprince

they use it in back , just removed the front i guess , wait till the official release

  • vigneshprince

yeah me too think its coool!

  • vigneshprince

    may be the refreshed one

  • David Lettinga

Ready to upgrade my Z1, we’ll see the official specs in 2 days. Curious to see what makes the premium special.

  • BarelyBlurred

I haven’t been paying attention as much as I used to to the smartphone world, can someone tell me if this 810 is really that big of a deal?

  • fried_egg

    no etching on the side?

  • mukul verma

    on the left lower side.

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

It looks like Revision Snapdragon 810…I’m gonna to buy it…No, maybe (Because 64-bit processor)

  • Alvin

If it’s not 4k, then what’s with the 4K X-Reality thing a few days ago?

Believe me, 4K is Just another bunch of jokes/fanmade thing.:)

  • Chen

    Is S815 existed???

  • Alvin

When they use mediatake (lol) and then there will be more people who hate z5.

  • fried_egg

me too… want to do it online so i can use the 14 day cooling off you dont get in store in case it has the issues the z3+ had… not that i can think of a phone i want more than the z5 that is out.. and i wont buy the iphone6s even if it gave the right to have free bjs from the female “genius” of your choice in apple stores..

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

No, It’s Revision, Fixed heat issue.

  • fried_egg

true, but then again a black surround helps define the screen… black framed tvs always look better than silver framed and indeed a frame can define the picture even though the trend is for “no frame” on more expensive tvs…

  • Alvin

    4K this, 4K that. I don’t need it.

Stick with 1080p and make things better to kick those other manufacturers. That design is already beautiful now after all those leaks, now prove us that new camera will really is new. And wow, oh my god, that dark turquoise colour really grabbed my attention so much that i don’t care about what i said about emerald green amd blue topaz s***. That looks super super amazing.

    Just can’t wait till IFA

  • a.mubher

Premium and elegant. Fingers crossed for the “premium” version to be at least 6 inch.

  • fried_egg

i keep googling “overheating” with the search period set for 2 weeks (ie to remove the early reports from the results)… and there are a lot of 810 based phones out there now and not so many complaints… so i am willing to take the risk – especially as sony have had time with qlcm to sort it out

  • fried_egg

i love the etched “xperia” on the side rumour… looked seriously upper market… how can you not like it!

  • Alvin

Yeah that teal colour.ughhhh, made me regret my copper z3 even though if I sell this beast, i still couldn’t get that better beast (z5) because i think the price will also be a beast.

  • Alvin

Yeah. Before they decided to make it lower like that, the volume position is already perfect to me

  • AlexFirth91

    Hmmm should be interesting.

  • Alvin

Since I’m not a z3+ or s810 powered smartphones user, i don’t know about that. But i think media and some people exaggerated that overheating thing a lot.

  • Alvin

    You wish :P lol

  • Alvin

Just wait till Wednesday, would you?

  • Alvin

I think that is just a prototype or something like that.

But if they really removed it, I’m not happy because sony logo in front helps to make the phone looks great to me.

  • Alvin

JUST GO THERE YOU AIRHEAD! Lol please just go there, remember what I said about the place you live in? Just please go there because you’re one of the luckiest people to me, because IFA and sony event will be there and I would feel great if I live there just to see their event every year:)

  • PoweredBySony

I was expecting 4GB of ram on the z5. Exept the cameras and the scanner the normal Z5 is just an Z3+ with some changes.

  • Rafay

Is z5 going to have Ois or not can someone confirm

  • spade

I hates leaks picture, especially when they put their logo on top of those so called leaks..

  • the truth

z5+ will has 4k screen….not 2k ,prototype devices have diffrent specs.

  • iia3ezu

Does the Z5 have a Truly or Innolux screen?

  • I just read a few months ago that they were going to remove the front logo as it does Apple.

  • iia3ezu

The watermarks are to prevent people from stealing the pictures for their own use, passing off the pictures as their own.

    Are you a picture thief?

  • pingotta

    Z5+ won’t have a 4K screen unfortunately pal.

  • Vuyo Ncube

Replacing my Z1 next year with the Z6 because of that crippled processor. Unless Qualcomm physically redesigned the SD810 (a la SD801) or somehow have the SD820 ready by then, I don’t care about any new smartphones. All SD810 phones are doomed and Samsung didn’t put enough love into the Note 5.

  • pt020

The volume button is also used as focus for the camera, that’s why it is closer to the camera button.

  • pt020

Volume buttons are used also for focus, that’s why they are closer to the camera button.

  • jokensy

    I think you’re right.

  • the truth

no it will have , the reason souces leaked 1080p and 2k screens bcause software runs at fhd and 2k.just wait for few days you will see.

  • Matúš Livora

I hope there will be also dual-sim version of Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium … not only Z5

  • the truth

    just wait…

  • Vjekoslav Andric

    Masterpiece of tech… :-)

  • fried_egg

thats a silly place for it… should be top half to be seen when holding… and as they cleared one side with the combined sd/sim flap and move of usb with the z3+ it was an opportunity to bling that predominant location

  • Kristo

    nice thanks :)

  • Zircon

it’s still a 810 but with minor improvements, so heavy throttling is still present. no buy.

  • fried_egg

sadly one of my friends bought the z3+ because i was so positive about my z1 and other friends bought the z3 on the back of that positivity for the brand… his phone closes down due to heat the moment the camera is started with one of the “apps” like the face mask one… and once hot it stays hot if other thngs are opened even if the camera is closed (and closed from task manager)

  • Kristo

Colored front panel looks weird when the screen is off in my opinion.

  • Alvin

Maybe he didn’t update the phone to the latest version? Because some of people who bought the phone experienced no overheating or less overheating that didn’t cause the camera app to close. But most of them experienced it

  • Mac

Plz tell me there is a micro sd slot in there as well..!?

  • David Hvatov

I’Il still keep my Z2. Can’t see big difference.

  • nick

    cool!! let the roll begin!!!

  • Billy de Fretes

    people here like …wut ? 3GB RAM?why snapdragon 810?

even my Old Xperia Z still as smooth as new …

i guess this Z5 will be perfect phone to replace my old Z

  • spade

Duh! as i state, they put their logo on top of product, why not putting it without touching the product that is supposed to be leaks?…smh

  • pingotta

I hope you’re right because then we would have a portable 4K TV! (Netflix, BT Sport Ultra HD, Vudu, etc…)

  • Svnjay

Mediatek GPUs are inferior to Qualcomm, don’t provide sources for development and don’t follow the GPL.

  • Svnjay

    Tsunayoshi :D

  • mawhob22222

Xperia z5 plus or premium is coming with 4K display and with snapdragon 810
    Z5 premium = 4GB
    Z5 = 3GB
    Z5 compact = 3GB

  • mawhob22222

    Xperia z5 5.2 inch

  • Cod3rror

3GB RAM is an instant no-buy. It should have 4GB.

  • Dil2abu

It’s because of the fingerprint sensor..

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

But, Z5 Compact is 3GB RAM possiby, then instant buy. (720p screen is excellent battery life)

  • KarFar

no sony branding on the front?

  • Pingback: Una nueva fotografía filtrada del Sony Xperia Z5 confirma la presencia del lector de huella dactilar - Teknófilo()

  • hmmm

you are blind…even z3 is step forward thand z2 with that stupid plastic bezel.I had that phone for only one month.the worst experia phone is z2.every drop comes with a bump on z2…just cheap plastic around metal bezel!

  • hmmm

sony is not apple.of course there is a card slot

  • kido

    why?

  • Cod3rror

You know what would make Z5 Compact better? 4GB RAM.

  • Cod3rror

More multitasking. Plus these phones will be expensive, and all premium phones now come with 4GB RAM.

  • Mac

Well only a matter of time since this is the first time with built in 32gb.
When Samsung did that they removed SD slot.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    810 baby bring it on

  • h2oflyer

I love my Z3. For me it’s the best phone out there…switched up from Z2 because I wanted a brighter screen and sleeker looking phone.

Waterproof USB and fingerprint sensor along with bigger battery are what interest me, but will have to see if the upswitch is worth it

  • ludimilojko

You know what would make it even more better? 16 GB RAM.

  • a.mubher

Xperia Z3+ also comes with built in 32gb and micro SD card slot. No need to worry, it is the standard for Sony. Samsung removed it because of the “premium and new” design of glass and metal. Sony has both.

  • Just 3 days

  • Mac

Oh, okay hope u right man. Need more space than 32gb.
Hate lollipop on my Z1C cuz somehow it needs redraw the home screen every freaking second.. Slow as fu** as well.

  • h2oflyer

I had the Z2 for 10 months and switched to Z3 on day 1 because it it is way better!!!

  • PRASHANTH A

    Teal looks beautiful :D

  • “Unfortunately”. Yeah…right.

  • MoYeung

    Worldwide release or not?

  • azzido

Hope for 4K version with 4GB of RAM :)
we will see how overheating will impact camera ehh…

    Not joying 810…

  • azzido

Why the hell volume button is so low?
Before it was in perfect place! Sony WTF? :/

  • Bennder

Which premium phones, Iphone? And please don’t say Samsung phones because they can’t keep anything in ram memory more than 2-3min. Tell me have you ever use Sony phone with 3gb of ram that was bad at multitasking?

  • Andre Lemard

It’s used to zoom in the camera and it’s probably so low because of the fingerprint sensor.

  • pingotta

Because then they could crop it?

  • Juang Bo

i really don’t like the button placement of the xperia devices, when you hold the phone, it touches those buttons to your palm .. annoying. and i like one color phone, not silver green at the back and black at the front … bad color combination

  • Simon Setyadarma

At least my curiousity will be answered. I wanted to know how 810 will run on Z5 compact, is it gonna be hot or not since it is only 4.6 720p and I guess the same amount of RAM.
Btw, someone on Google+ has Z3+ and posted about the update whose he got, he said the device become faster and not overheating anymore, only warm. But gonna wait for review of it.

  • Simon Setyadarma

The button placement is good enough for me. It gives you easy access to them. :| But kinda agree with the color, love the Z3c colors option tho.

  • Simon Setyadarma

Hope so.. MKHD said his OnePlus Two doesn’t overheat and a guy from G+ said the latest update for Z3+ makes the device faster and not overheat.

  • Simon Setyadarma

    No…. Lol

  • Simon Setyadarma

I think the battery life will be better than Z3+ since that thick could store more bigger battery (?)

  • May Czos

Mediateks have rubbish GPUs, single core scores and they mean no updates because Mediatek doesn’t want to share with the source codes.

  • May Czos

What? Black panel looks great, it’s very elegant and stylish.

  • May Czos

SD810 because right now there’s no other option on the market.

  • May Czos

Premium phones with HD display have 4GB of RAM? I don’t think so. More RAM is needed with QHD resolution because everything have to be rendered into more pixels and weighs more.

  • May Czos

HD display in a flagship? Are you kidding Sony? I won’t pay premium money for such rubbish display. The difference between HD and FullHD is massive even at 4,6″.

  • Cod3rror

    Now we’re talking!

  • omar

Don’t forget the Z3 Compact battery life with the “HD” display.

  • XperiaJunkie85

    Thats a dummy model.

  • Cod3rror

It’s a brand new phone, going into 2016. 3GB is an early 2015 spec. 4GB min for flagship in 2015 H2 and onward…

  • May Czos

Z3C’s has great battery life thanks to small display, not resolution. Resolution itself has almost nothing to do with battery life. Z3 Compact would have equally excellent battery life with FullHD display as well.

  • Pingback: Yet another photo of the Sony Xperia Z5 leaks out, suggests three devices to be announced this week()

  • Amir

Compact advantage outweighs the no fhd feature by far. hd is more then enough for 4.6″ size. sony compact is the best compact phone on the market. no comparison. look at the big picture.

  • skyzo97

    yeah, helio x10 GPU just a mid-range. I check it : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Imagination-PowerVR-G6200.129146.0.html

  • May Czos

Thing it – it’s not more than enough. Image quality is much worse than in 2013 HTC One M7. FullHD really makes a difference and if I need to pay premium money, I want a premium device, without the display from $150 handsets. Sony’s Compact are the best on the market simply because they’re the only ones on the market. But it doesn’t mean they can cut corners.
I looked at the big picture – it’s terrible.

  • nise

Please explain why the resolution has nothing tot do with batterie life while you need a more powerful gpu because you got more Pixels which need to be controled AND the need of a brighter illuminating display because of the smaller pixels in comparison to a Display with lower resolution.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

All those extra power needed to light several hundred thousands more pixels means you need more juice to keep them lit..Besides you can have a 4 ” display but at HD it will stillsuck the same amount if not more because the gpu still needs to move all those pixels.
If not explain to me how a 4 ” iPhone fails remarkably at battery life if it has a lower resolution?

  • dty13

button placement is okay.. but i agree about the color.. i really want the aqua blue color back and front!! i always go to black or white for xperia because the other color have two color.

  • dty13

    how thick is this phone??

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

    And you have one?
I have seen zenfone 2, note 4, s6 and many more device from my friends..And they don’t seem particularly amazing or natural for my eyes. Whereas my sisters Z3 looks natural and the FHD is very sharp for a ‘mere’ FHD. Get your facts straight about technology and implementation before tooting your horns

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

My younger sisters Z1C is running smoothly.. Nothing out of the ordinary..

  • Amir

People will buy the compact regardless if it has fhd or hd because it is the best compact on the market not because it does not have rivals but because it is truly quality device. and fyi, brightness, color temperature, good blacks is more important then fhd especially on 4.6″ size.

  • Geese Howard

Ok, the Z5 all looks very nice and Sony has pulled it off… unlike what they did with the Z3+ (Z4). The question is will they be using the SD810.1 or simply the SD810? There were rumors that Sony was going to use the slightly adjusted 810 for their Z3+, don’t know if that ever happened? If they do stick with the 810, what will Sony do with the heating issue? This time the outcome is on Sony and the Z5 is a monster so I hope they did something to tackle that problem (if it will be one).

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Right, even the Dual sim Z3+ that was on display at the Sony store didn’t quite overheat after 2 minutes of playing around with the camera app..not even the temperature rising symbol appearing. Round the back a slight heat spot can be felt but nothing out of the ordinary in an octa core phone… It was running out of the box firmware and was running through the demo way before that..so…

  • vigneshprince

    this looks cool too!

  • vigneshprince

    me too exactly!

  • vigneshprince

yeah i feel the same! way thinking of Z5 or Z5 premium! once they are out lets decide

  • Mac

Then I need to ask you if she is using the phone heavily? The battery doesn’t live much longer than a day, or not even that, in my use. It was great the first couple of months but I guess it’s time for a factory reset and start over to get back the performance it once had.
Playback Spotify thu BT kinda much each day, fb, messenger, chrome, camera, Runkeeper and it doesn’t give me the performance I need any more.
No lack of memory since I got most of my stuff on a 64gb SD card.

  • vigneshprince

    looks awesome!

  • vigneshprince

    yeah true!

  • vigneshprince

I am lefthanded and this perfectly fits for me!

  • vigneshprince

I think 3GB ram is more than enough!

  • vigneshprince

    hahaha

  • vigneshprince

4K in a mobile? will it be really that much different in a small screen?! it will take more battery too! 1080p is perfect fit!

  • Rafa?

Human can do mistakes, but only stupid repeats them. Sony are you going to repeat stupidly Snapdragon 810 overheat problems? Really?

  • vigneshprince

I am a left hander , so it is perfect

  • Niels d. G.

3 GB of RAM on a phone is already enough for more multi-tasking than most humans can actually keep up with

  • May Czos

You don’t need more power to keep them lit because it’s a LCD display with single backlight panel. It’s size, brightness and efficiency are the keys. 4,6″ HD display needs more power than 4″ HD panel because it’s bigger. Higher resolution means slightly more worh for GPU but not as often as you may think, the difference in power consumption is neigligible.
4″ iPhone has bad battery life because of rubbish battery.

  • is that an OLED display? the black levels in the picture make it seem like it is

  • May Czos

GPU works less often than you think and it needs much less energy than CPU. It needs a little bit more power but actual difference is really small, +/- 5-7 minutes of screen-on-time.
More pixels also mean that they’re smaller, their transistors are smaller and more power efficient. Backlight panel doesn’t have to be brighter because of more pixels. It needs to be brighter if you want brighter display. It needs more energy if the screen is bigger. That’s what matters. Bigger and brighter display = higher power consumption.

  • Sadman Khan

I believe it’s for easy zooming while using the camera

  • Sadman Khan

Z3 compact with 2gb RAM can multitask excellently. So 3 GB RAM is actually enough.

  • Nathan

    It’s… it’s beautiful.

  • Shubham Mutreja

IPS NEO can give same black levels like amoled

  • May Czos

We’re talking about a flagship, it should have them all, resolution/sharpness as well.

PS. Sony have problems with color temperature and blacks, Z3 and Z3+ are both rubbish in those department.

  • May Czos

Zenfone has pretty rubbish display. Note 4 and S6 have excellent displays, Z3 is not even close. Colors are bright which some people may not like but you can use Basic mode to make them dimmer (the ones you saw probably were in Advanced or Cinema mode). Z3 has dimmer colors which some people may like but they’re also way off, color temperature is outrageously high, blacks are mediocre. Z3 has really poor calibration and poor display.

But it has nothing to do with my point. I’m not talking about display calibration, but resolution/sharpness.

I agree that Z3’s FHD display is very sharp. 424 ppi is quite a lot. Z3 Compact has just 319ppi and it’s noticeable. Z3’s display is much sharper than the one in Z3 Compact. That’s why I think that Compact should also have FullHD display because it really makes a difference.

  • May Czos

    Exactly.

  • May Czos

There’s no alternative on the market right now.

  • Ahhhh…. Gold…..Finally…. So long after Xperia Ray. Gold I smell…

  • May Czos

    1. Badass except poor sharpness and image quality. In a $600-$700 flagship…
    2. No they can’t, Samsung won’t sell them 7420.

  • May Czos

No. It’s going to have sensor-shift stabilization.

  • May Czos

Badass gaminf performance, shitty image quality.

  • ryq24

Wow! These phones are going to be very expensive!

  • DanielGearSolid

    Where is the chrome dammit?!?!

  • Mario Junior

    Qualcomm Snapdragon 810

    No, thanks!

  • Amir

I agree that the compact should have fhd but it is FAR from a deal breaker. yes, z3 could have more accurate colors but it can be adjusted with white balance. anyway, again, not a deal breaker. z series of devices are great devices one of the best if not the best on the market. i choose a phone for many features, not for one or two. for me, z3 has it all but i’m looking forward to z5+. z3 still has a great display and fantastic brightness and display of low power consumption.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

I have calibrated the display of the Z3 slightly to make it warmer..Blacks are good for an LCD..
Zenfone 2 has a mediocre display??? I have seen one..really doesn’t really impress so I might have to agree..
All the modes..yet none impresses me..
My friends who have the phones aren’t buying for the tech but rather to show off..So the phones were running default settings for sure..Don’t know what that is tbh.. But if default settings aren’t impressive, then I don’t know what is..
Seriously though, how close are you putting the phone to your eyes?? I don’t get how people can see pixels when I’m not even seeing any pixelation on my 48′ TV…. With only a 150 or so ppi… It’s cray what people can claim..

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

So..comparing Z1C screen size to the Z1 at a difference of 0.4″, how much more battery power would it take to power it..not even taking into account the screen resolution

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Sorry for getting back to you late, lack of Internet connectivity in my area..

To answer your question yes she does, also she doesn’t clear apps after use and watches videos heavily as well as listening to a lot of music and Web browsing intensively for her favourite idols.. She did mentioned a slightly lower battery life but still get a full day of use..

  • xAntifreeZe

    MKBHD*
but ya hopefully overheating for SD810 will be fix

  • May Czos

Why 4,7″ instead of 4,6″? There’s basically no difference. Z3C has 4,6″ Z5C is going to be the same.

They already pretty much fixed the software in the Z3+, I think Z5 is going to be even better.

  • xAntifreeZe

    hopefully a massive 4500mah battery ><

  • May Czos

The difference between Z1 and Z1C is 0,9″, not 0,4″. I don’t know exact numbers for particular phones.

  • Simon Setyadarma

Hope Sony knows how to deal with fire

  • May Czos

You can slightly adjust the white balance but accuracy is still far from perfect, contract is very mediocre etc. Z3’s display is bright and that’s it. Well, they’re not exactly the best on the market, there are some heating/throttling issues not only with Z3+ but also Z3, audio quality is ok but not on HTC/Samsung level, cameras are very bad for flagships. Lack of FHD in the Z5C may not be huge dealbreaker but it’s another thing to fix that is not going to be fixed.

  • Eddy Edd

808 would have been a far better choice, no throttling or overheating and great battery life too.. G4 is the prime example.

  • daniel kudo

With that black wallpaper, it’s there any hope that Sony will use OLED display?

  • daniel kudo

G4 has terrible battery life btw

  • Eddy Edd

that’s not to blame on 808.

  • EPGuest

It reminds me of the Ray

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Okay that was my mistake.. It’s 4.3″ to 5.0 “..Z1 was still a 5.0″ screen dude.
Exactly my point, you don’t know how much difference there is for the screen sizes even not taking into account screen resolution.. Now think a 0.7 ” size difference and a 700 mAh battery capacity difference, yet the Z1C performs similarly if not better in battery test.. And better in out and out GPU performance and it all boils down to the screen responded and not screen sizes..
You can have a 720p 5.0″ display and it will still have better performance results due to pushing lesser pixels..

  • Amir

Nah, display is still great, contrast is fine. for each is own. you can only speak for yourself. no heating issues in z3. audio quality is not the best on market because of ip68 but it is still respectable. as you wrote, hd for z5c is not a deal breaker. no one will care about this once it is in the store for sale because i’m sure sony will outdo z3c. end of story.

  • daniel kudo

But 4.7 or 4.8″ will be perfect especially if it comes with Xperia Z3 compact-like bezels

  • daniel kudo

I hope so, Imagine Sony device with TRIMASTER EL OLED!!

  • Svnjay

The Z3+ has better battery life than the G4.

  • May Czos

Blacks were good for LCD in 2013. In 2015 blacks ar emuch worse than most LCDs on the market (iPhone, LG G4 or Huawei P8 all have much deeper blacks).

Samsungs have Advanced mode set as a default, the one which bumps the colors. You need to turn basic mode separately.

You’re watching TV for quite a distance, 2x less ppi and 10x the distance. But it’s not fair comparison. Comparing between two phones is more fair. $150 phones have similar or even bettwer ppi these days and we’re talking about a flagship. And it’s not about numbers because the difference is really noticeable. That’s the problem. 2013 flagship (HTC M7) with 4,7″ had FHD display and it still has sharper display than 2015 4,6″ Sony’s flagship. That’s not right.

  • Rafa?

Better to use 808, much cooler, little bit slower. If for Sony more important are numbers than users, I haven’t got any questions more.

  • daniel kudo

    It will come with JDI

  • daniel kudo

Source?? If its true, SteadyShot INSIDE-like alpha camera would be awesome

  • May Czos

    It’s not fine:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkTPRaJVHqA

    http://oi58.tinypic.com/28hzqt2.jpg

Good red and that’s it. Other colors, white, contast are bad (for flagships). About audio quality – speakers are fine, I was talking about headphones. Low resolution is not a deal breaker for many but it is for me. It would sell better with properly calibrated FullHD display.

  • daniel kudo

    That will great!!

  • daniel kudo

So the bezels will be much smaller then?

  • the truth
  • May Czos

Better performance results – yes, better battery – not really. Rooted LG G3 that scales everything to 1080p (instead of 1440p) scores much better in GPU benchmarks but lasts just 7 minutes longer on one charge.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Much worse.. And yet the device isn’t released and someone has come to us from the future to tell us the Sony flagship has terrible blacks..

Oh I’m sorry, I thought we were pixel peeping.. So I thought of sitting as close to the TV as possible while still being able to see the whole screen..which was 2 feet away,no pixelation, and I’m reading my Z now at 5 inches away from my face….

Right..Let’s then compare a FHD screen to a HD Screen and disregard the extra pixels cramp into an almost similar size..

  • zymo

    4K screen confirmed for Z5+

    New pics

  • Eddy Edd

are you arguing that Z3+ has better battery life cause it packs far less pixels / resolution than G4 or that Z3+ doesn’t get hot? like hella hot?

    Z3+ Performance & Throttling lel http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z3plus-review-1261p5.php

re-read “808 would have been a far better choice, no throttling or overheating and great battery life too”

    here’s what G4 example proves ‘808 vs 810’ http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/04/qualcomms-snapdragon-808-doesnt-get-so-hot-under-the-collar/

anyways the point is 810 had issues let’s how SONY tackles it with their second try Z5. I’m really counting on this one.

  • Amir

I’ve already seen that video. generally z3 display it is great. good enough. anyway, i don’t only look at the display. it does not matter how you look at it. you will never find a prefect phone. there is no such thing. as far as i’m concerned z3 is the best flag on the market for many reasons. if you don’t think the same then it is your own thought. so what you say does not really matter. a phone is chosen for many features. if you have such constant criticism against sony then go buy a non sony flag and be happy with yourself. end of story. i am sure looking forward for z5+ announcement. most likely my next phone.

  • Svnjay

The 808 throttles too, just not as much.
    http://www.androidauthority.com/snapdragon-808-vs-810-overheating-test-605273/

The G4’s battery is just disappointing.

  • May Czos

Display is good but not competetive with other flagships.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

And everything else was kept the same as before?? If it isn’t I wouldn’t have tried to use that result as a point as it’s not entirely valid. Also, how do you calculate your battery time?? 1 hour of everything in one day?or just based on a rough estimate.
Using an LG G3, now I know you are just another Timel and have successfully wasted my data and time..I’m sorry, you’re just talking about a phone that isn’t released yet and comparing it to something else that is meant for a totally different crowd.. Also, don’t try that ‘but what I say is for the sake of Sony’ bit, I have been using an Xperia for 3 years now and all I found needing was a better performance.. And other brands are either way too gimmicky or just a totally different taste than what is meant for me. Anyway, for the sake of this argument, my Z to my 2nd sister Zr, easily last for a day on normal to light use but my Z even on the lightest of screen on time, and just checking on group chats once every half hour, for 5 minutes got me racing for a charger before evening.. Same battery capacity, same chipset.. Just 0.7″ size difference and 720p v 1080p.

  • Paul M

The quality of code from Mediatek is awful. I bought a USB WiFi adaptor which I only discovered too late was based on a Mediatek chip. The driver, comes as source. The number of compiler warnings is scary, I had to disable warnings just to get it to halfway build.
And only after invoking support through their reseller did I discover that they hadn’t released a driver update since kernel 2.6, so their code years out of date. So basically I wasted my money buying the damn thing.

I have a friend who designs things with Arm and other CPUs, and he says that Mediatek’s system-on-chip devices would be great, except that their ability to supply useful code to smaller customers is terrible, so he won’t touch them.
Mediatek also are well known as GPL violators, so they are a leach on all the people who put their hard work into the Linux kernel.

Therefore I will never buy knowingly buy a device with a Mediatek chip.

  • May Czos

No pixelation? Of course, you can’t see pixels on your phone from ~300 ppi. Z3 Compact has 319 ppi. You can’t see separate pixels but human eyes can see the difference in sharpness even up to 600 ppi. The difference between 300 ppi and 450 ppi is noticeable, small textures or fonts are sharper.

  • spade

Or they could make their logo smaller without messing with the product shown..
Btw, check this XB watermark, they put it nicely without distracting the product’s view.

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/We-changed-the-LG-G3s-display-resolution-to-1080p—we-got-superb-performance-and-negligible-battery-life-increases_id65982

Z5 Compact haven’t been released yet but you can’t trich physics. 4,6″ HD display with 319ppi is going to lack sharpness compared to other flagships.

Just 0,7″ difference? That’s massive difference! Besides, your Z is also a pretty old phone, your battery probably lost some of its capacity. Screen resolution doesn’t really matter here.

  • May Czos

There is no such thing like source, we only have rumors.

  • Amir

It is competitive enough. a device is not chosen only for one feature.

  • May Czos

Much cooler? It heats up basically as much as 810 and it’s quite a bit slower, especially in GPU department. It’s better to deactivate two A57 ores in the 810 and have Adreno 430 on board.

  • May Czos

It’s not competetive and it’s not chosen by clients because Xperias don’t sell well.

  • May Czos

I don’t care what Apple says. It’s all marketing.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Generally, I would agree with you, but from what I’ve seen,it sort of works to some extent..Not entirely good but the display does makes up for the lack of pixels..

  • Ben Ling

@XperiaBlog, PhoneArena updated with a new picture

  • May Czos

Iphone 6 has lower esolution display but they have a trick – menus, text etc. ares rendered in higher resolution and then scaled down to HD to slightly improve overall sharpness.

  • Utsav Shah

Xperiablog’s mobile site is stupidly annoying. It lags so much, when you try to scroll vertical and it takes you to next article. Oh and I have a z3.

  • Amir

Xperia doesn’t sell as much as samsung and lg for example, because lack of marketing and carrier support and lack of presence in usa. z3 and z3 compact are the best selling sony mobile devices since they took over ericsson. educate yourself before commenting. don’t comment for the sake of commenting.

  • LuvMusic

I too have some concern about the SD810, but, it has been out for awhile now and I’m guessing Sony has the issue under control….they can’t afford to mess this up.

I’m even less concerned with a heating issue with the Z5 Premium, the bigger size should make it easier to control the heating issues and include a bigger battery. I wish Sony had bumped the RAM up to 4gb, especially with the larger screened Premium.

Any word on the SD card slot…..still there?

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

And that is how they get their 750p resolution.. Which is the end result is it not? And yet the ppi is at 326 ppi

  • Yasir Fawad

    Xperiablog Z5 premium = 4gb ram + 4k screen.

  • spade

The problem with MediaTek chipset that won’t have this goodies..

  • Birkir R Gudjonsson

PhoneArena: Our source tells us that the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium will feature a 4K resolution screen, not the QHD screen we previously posted. Pixel density will be between 801 and 808ppi!

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

I did the comparison myself and strictly told my sister what to do for one whole day when our phones were new,so there was almost none battery degradation if not any.
Hah..massive difference, yet when I ask you to tell me how much difference it would take on that difference in size, you refuse to give me an answer, that shows you yourself isn’t sure what you are saying but merely putting it out to try and win an argument that is pointless for a phone of this size. Unless you have brought a Z1C side by side to an iPhone 6 or anything else in its class size and resolution you have no say in what it looks like side by side. I have and I can tell there isn’t any difference if not just minimal.
Also I have read that the LCD pixels are like colour filters and they uses backlight to light then up as they filter the backlight into the desired color, the physical pixel count cannot be changed thus the test of the you posted isn’t realistic in my point of view as the backlight still have to pass the light through 3.7 million fixed pixel filters..a
Thus the draw would be the same..only reason I can think of that it took less battery by a little was the same reason the 1080p apps took less battery draw than 1440p apps.

  • Rafa?

Really i used G4 for few test weeks, works perfect, despite 4k and it’s much cooler than Z3+, of course if you look at benchmarks – Z3+ looks better, but you can’t feel it in everyday use comparing this two models. Although you maybe right – better is deactivate two A57, but I think the clue of this problem is glass which is not passing heat so good in Xperia.

  • jamie evans

phonearena has updated the post. The new post claims that Z5 Premium will come with a striking 4K display. I’m looking forward to Z5P!!

  • Gitarooman

3GB ram better be false, they might as well just shut down their mobile division now, how are they even planning on competing with S6+ and Note 5. So sick of this dumb s**t company cheaping out on everything.

  • (C):stem

    Use another browser.

  • jamie evans

Note 5 has a critical design defect with the Stylus Pen. No one is going to buy Note 5. Good bye

  • (C):stem

Beautiful phones and great specs, just hope that this is the last generation featuring that same design (they only changed the iconic power button but this new one looks ugly, in my opinion). We need visual changes, and Sony knows to deliver.

  • Lucas Blanco

the mobile version of this page is very laggy!!

  • Raphaiel

Phonearena updated z5 premium will have 4k screen as the leak xperia blog posted before

  • Nayib

That makes no sense xP I agree with you, but why did you comment that here? Haha.

  • May Czos

Internals in the G4 are heating up quite a lot, LG’s just isolating them from the user. Z3+ is much thinner and made of glass – they can’t do the same thing.

  • Shubham Mutreja

each and every sammy’s amoled device will be fucked if they use trimaster el oled or sony’s super top emission oled tech

  • May Czos

The test I posted shows that GPU doesn’t need more juice with higher resolution. Display’s power consumption is also pretty much the same:

    http://android.com.pl/images/user-images/xshopper/2015/08/4K-display-power-consumption.jpg

Resolution almost doesn’t matter. In terms of power consumption there are three important factors:
    – display’s size
    – brightness
    – efficiency of the backlight panel

  • May Czos

But Sony don’t scale anything down. That’s why their ppi looks worse that iP6’s ppi.

  • May Czos

Z3 and Z3 Compact are selling well in Japan, in the rest of the world – not so much. They’re still probably the worst selling flagships on the market.

Z5 premium won’t be less than 900 dollars with that 4k screen.

  • H-R-K

    Display doesn’t look so impressive…

  • H-R-K

    More than 1000$ for sure.

  • CELTICJRB

It is (maybe) the Z5 premium : the guy talked about the 4K screen.

  • H-R-K

    What he say about 4k?

  • Amir

It is quite funny how to choose to ignore what i wrote or you only hearing yourself. z3 and z3c are the best selling sonymobile devices in the world from all sonymobile devices. i wrote why sony does not sell as much as samsung and lg for example, and you choose to ignore it. btw, why do you keep writing here if you constantly criticizing sony? go buy some other brand phone and be happy with yourself. relieve yourself from your misery! you can do it. constant negative criticism is not good for your health. life is good. ask lg, for example.

  • CELTICJRB

He merely said it is the firt cellphone with a 4K sreen

  • H-R-K

Did he telling something about display technology?

  • Sadman Khan

But then it has 5.1.1 which is great for multitasking

  • Vjekoslav Andric

What a dumb reply….z5 premium with 4k screen and 4 gb ram is to compete with those phablets…what part of the news did you not understand?

  • CELTICJRB

But he said at the beginning : it is the premium.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

    Btw, it looks…whoa!

  • CELTICJRB

    Yes, premium = Z5 premium

  • Rafa?

Truth is handling and using G4 doesn’t burn your hand and works really fine. If Z3+ burns and it’s not isolated or throttled or whatever – problem remains and it’s uncomfortable for user. Sony stubbornly is applying 810 instead of wisely wait for 820, probably just because to out new S6 killer, which is killing sony itself. The most important is user experience, not benchmarks, and this lesson Sony needs to learn. Sadly this will be very painfull lesson.

  • Lancelotos

The 810 chipset, is the same as Z4 that had heating problems? If yes….why Sony?????

  • CELTICJRB

    Maybe a cellphone for winter?

  • Lancelotos

    Haha, yes maybe :)

  • CELTICJRB

So, shall purchase it in a few weeks…

  • CELTICJRB

More seriously, maybe Sony solved the problem of too high temperature?

  • Utsav Shah

Hoping the team would fix it.

  • Utsav Shah

    oh I know son!

  • May Czos

    There’s no hope for that.

  • May Czos

    MicroSD is still there.

  • May Czos

It would take too long to wait for SD820. You’ll see it in Z6 in march.

  • May Czos

All SD810 processors right now are revised v2.1 versions.

  • May Czos

Not really fixed, just slightly improved.

  • May Czos

It would be too close to regular Z5.

  • Paul Gillen

It’ll have a 25 megapixel camera, as on the back it saids “24.7mp” well I think it does anyway!

  • Paul Gillen

    I agree with ya totally!

  • May Czos

Z3+ doesn’t burn your hand, it’s one of the coolest phones while gaming, it can also record 4K video the longest among current flagships. There’s nothing wrong with the user experience in the Z3+, it’s the internet bragging about 810 all the time. They couldn’t wait for SD820, it would just erase their release schedule. More – around the same time they’re going to show the Z6 – your solution would mean skipping the Z5 completely. They can’t afford to do that.

  • May Czos

Sony is in deep shit and the fact they they’re selling well compared to other models doesn’t mean anything – it’s still not enough to make money.

  • gamer324

The lag is the problem with this ‘powered by Marfeel’ crap. Xperiablog had such a great phone UI before with simple big thumbnails with headlines right below. Also long-press doesn’t work in the Marfeel version. I wish that Xperiablog just goes back to its old phone and tablet UI (maybe with a nrw paintjob) as many of us have pretty lousy internet connections and a simpler webpage is far more attractive than an annoying, laggy, pseudo-webapp that actually provides less usability than the true (older) web UI.

  • gamer324

To be honest, the z3+ performance is pretty respectable except for the camera overheating, with this new sensor let’s hope Sony at least fixed that up. Plus this device looks a bit thicker so maybe Sony used the extra space for more conductive dissipation? Only one way to know, and that’s post-launch opinions. :/

  • Prateek Bhanushali

It seems that the devices are Demo units. !!!

  • mike

lol the volume buttons, just copy iphone 6 button layout, is that hard?

  • the truth

yeah sensor is 24,8 mp , 4:3 cam mode you can take pics are 23 mp.you can take auto mode 23mp and 20mp 16:9 pics….

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Unless you are talking from seeing them side by sideike I have, you cannot convince me of anything. And as far as I’m concern, this is over.
Also comparing a phone that isn’t out to one on the market isn’t exactly fair either because screen technology also plays a roll. But then, let’s kust save our time and keep our opinion, since you’re adamant that Sony compact comes with a pixelated screen.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Unfortunately, you don’t seem to understand that concept, the backlight was still pushing it’s light through those pixels, and since they are compacted together,a strong backlighting is still needed, the only place where the battery was saved was by the gpu having to render a lower resolution screen that’s stretch across the pixels..
If not tell me,are you getting a brighter screen?
Also a better comparison for battery test would be between FHD and qhd and not QHD and 4k since where are debating on the first and not the latter.
Find me a comparison between two same spec phone, same size screens and different screen resolution only, then tell me. Also the screen must not be amoled as amoled is power efficient when there is blacks

  • May Czos

Backlight panel is the same, it has nothing to do with resolution! Yes, previous post (link to Phonearena’s test) was meant to show that GPU doesn’t consume much more energy because you’re claiming otherwise.

No, we’re not getting brighter screen.

We’re debating about HD vs. FHD so FHD vs. QHD wouldn’t be perfect either. But there’s no such test (at least I haven’t found one) but it doesn’t change one thing – we’re talking about how resolution affects battery life. If one depends on another there should be significant difference wether it’s HD vs. FHD, FHD vs. QHD or QHD vs. 4K.

I gave you two sources, both of them are clear that there is some difference but it’s very small. And yet you’re nitpicking even though you have no argument whatsoever to back your claims up.

  • May Czos

Screen technology may give you deeper blacks or better viewing angles. It won’t give you better sharpness from the same resolution.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

We’re talking about fixed resolution, not software reduced resolution.. Which is also different

  • Simon Setyadarma

808 on G4 does overheating but the performance still better.

  • Sony is making a compact phone for everyone, not just you. 3 years ago, 4.6″ was considered huge and our hands and pockets haven’t grown since then. 4.7″ or 4.8″ would have made an already questionably compact phone even less compact.

  • Simon Setyadarma

Idk but Z3+ is better than Z3v about overheating when using the camera and shooting 4K

  • Paul Gillen

How do u know? Where and who’s ur source

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Having read the latest newsletter Z5c with be a 1080p device will that make you happy??
BTW, it’s obvious you don’t know what a Compact is because a compact was never sold for more than 400$.. Just ask anyone…

  • Amir

Sony is on the right track to sell more. they just need to work on marketing, carrier support and presence in usa and keep making and outdoing previous devices.

  • redX

I always wanted a Glance Screen like Lumia on my xperia phones, where only clock is white, everything else pure black (same as screen off), which I think not possible due to NON-Oled display, but the first photo in this post made me very curious.

  • Yah I like it too, but on black phones only. I love Sony but I hope they have phones with no black panels if the phone is not black.

  • gamer324

Well to be honest for all the flak that Sony gets it has time and time again gotten the most out of Qualcomm SoCs. The z3+ performance has improved considerably for people on the latest firmware and they say that the phone gets less hot aswell.
Maybe just maybe, the s810 will finally shine in the z5. But I am scared to even think how bad it would be in the 4k z5 premium.
As for the camera, let’s hope this new sensor was purposely designed to stay cooler.

  • Simon Setyadarma

Idk.. Let’s see… But why Z4 tablet doesn’t heat up?

  • Mac

    Interesting.
So she doesn’t need to restart it like 5 times a week.
How long has she been using it?

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

In all honesty, she doesn’t..the last time it lag on kit kat,I ask her to restart her phone and she scolded me like crazy..
Just a little over 8 months

  • Mac

Hmm. But she’s on 270 lollipop now right?

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Yes,she is on the latest..I personally updated it for her..Since they’re afraid of updates..Lol..
    But yeah.. She is..

Yeah.. I believe mine needs a clean install then.
I’m like the other way around. Can’t wait for a new update to hit my region so maybe it is just that. I got a fw not made for my phone. Did an update thu pcc after that but still on the other region somehow. Hopefully a clean install make it right again. It’s just that it take so long to get it back ad it was before clean install. All apps n shit. Backup doesn’t work all that good.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

    I agree…Most of the backups are terrible..lol..
I feel you the same way..
Hope the clean install helps..It’s still and amazing phone.

  • Mac

Uhum, yea let’s hope for it. I love this phone. Just want a bit larger screen so I think the z5 compact would be perfect. But if a fresh install make ma phone as new Imma wait for z6 compact.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

    Hahaha..Yeah..good choice..Hope for the best.. :D
Either ways wouldn’t be too bad of a choice at all.

Yea I’m all about Sony when speaking about phones. I loved my first Sony smartphone the Xperia Neo. Sadly it became kinda useless pretty quick because of RAM.
Then I got the Acro S. But after a while same here. Still have both though. My dad uses the neo haha.
Anyway which Xperia do u have?

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Been with Sony since it was Sony Ericsson.
First Xperia was a neo l, then the same year upgraded to a Z.still using one but looking to upgrade to a Z5 when it reaches my shore, hopefully before December.
Family uses a ZR, Z1C,Z3 and mom with a C looking to upgrade to a M5 when it’s available. Lol..
Dad pays the phone but uses a zenfone 5 since he isn’t a heavy user..But he wholeheartedly loves Sony and is thoroughly impressed by its durability and stunning daily features..with no gimmick..XD

That plastic bezel is not a problem for me. I never drop my phones + I have SCR10 cover.

Wow, nice. I’m the only one in my family 2 use Sony except dad and yea he is definitely not a heavy user.
I’ve been a fan since my first SE phone. The w810i, still my favorite. It had all everything back then.
Coming from a shitty Samsung flipphone and then it was all about SE/Sony phones :-).
Oh nice 2 see you haven’t suffered the heating issue the Z had. Making it taking in water.

  • Alvin

I am your only saviour, mate.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Heating issue. Sometimes under heavy use with 4g and all..But water intrusion.. Still none..
Lol, never had a Samsung. Probably never will if Sony keeps making good phones. Don’t want a gimmicky phone but a phone that’ll work for 2 years minimum.. Lol

This website was my favourite but now after the new layout design it has turned into a nightmare.
The owner really turned a perfect simple layout into an ultra rubbish one.
People usually enhance the browsing experience not the other way around.
This site has become unusable on phones, every time you try reading something it just switches to another article! Huge fail and big disappointment.

  • Bashar

I really like the fact that they used the word premium instead of this plus bull shit thing that Apple started.

  • Bashar

Or you can’t afford the new Z hehe

It’s new UI, It’s a real mess and really laggy. Miss the old UI the new one is crap :(

  • roeshak

Only an idiot reckons the z3 is a step up from z2 because of plastic corners lol

  • hmmm

Plastic bezels, not plastic corners…even the screen is better, and even the feeling and the z3 bezel is better.z2 is the last z phone with plastic

  • May Czos

    It’s your personal preference.

  • olinet

Which web browser are you using? I have no problems whatsoever in my z2 with Chrome

  • May Czos

1080p is the rumor in the comments. I hope it’s true though.
Previous Compact as $100 cheaper than full size Z3. But now Sony wants more money for their flagship, even Z3+ costs as much as S6 and Z5 won’t be cheaper. Z5 Compact is probably going to start at at least $550.

  • May Czos

We were talking about how it affects GPU power consumption. Not much at all.

  • Rafa?

Don’t say it’s not burning, because it’s completely not truth. Sony Z3+ is painfully hot, the hottest phone I’ve ever used (although I didn’t tested M9 what could change the leader). Don’t know how about 5.1 or further updates, because I tested Z3+ while 5.0.2 on board. I’m really heavy user and know what I say, simple tasks are making Z3+ very uncomfortable to use, you can do just only few pictures while outside is about 30 C degrees. Never couldn’t finish Antutu over 45 k points, because of throttling; some games shut down – I’m not gamer, just curious what will happen (if I was a gamer and bought Z3+ I would probably give it back to shop), and real hand burn while downloading files with LTE. Sony was my favourite brand, I’m still Z and Z3 user, and I can’t understand why they can’t afford to wait and release really good phone instead of decreasing worth of their brand with strange configurations. If people would like to buy a heater, they just buy heater, not Xperia. It’s blind running for highest numbers – nothing else.

  • gamer324

Heat dissipation benefits greatly from increased surface area, the SoC in the z4 tablet is the same size as the one in the z3+ phone, but obviously the tablet has a lot bigger surface area over which the heat can be spread out.
Still we don’t know what revision of s810 is used in the z5, Qualcomm has had plenty of time to work out the kinks in these months, and I’m sure they’d have made some improvement in terms of the thermal design.

  • h2oflyer

Have you had both Z2 and Z3…. I have and only an idiot can’t tell the difference.

If you’re going to post an opinion about phones you know very little about………

    Z5C you are mine

Likewise, no problems using latest build of Firefox on my D6503 Z2.

Which you still don’t understand.. The actual resolution is still 2160×1440, thus the backlight still have to force the lighting through all those pixels.. The only reason it’s performing better was because the software was forcing it to render in 1080p. Thus there was less stress on the GPU and since the 330 is optimised for 1080p,it will definitely perform better.
Come back to the argument once you understand how the software works.. It works brilliantly on a pc because that has a fixed power supply. But the actual resolution will never change.

  • May Czos

You don’t understand. It was about GPU, period! Not about backlight, pixels etc.
One of the arguments against higher resolution is that it means more work for GPU and therefore higher power consumption. Phonearena’s article clearly showed that it’s not the case. The article is just about graphics.

But you’re also wrong about backlight panel. It doesn’t really matter about how many pixels it has to push through. Pixels are smaller but there are more of them so overall “transparency” isn’t worse.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

‘If we force the LG G3 to work in 1080×1920 resolution, the display’s fixed resolution will stay the same, but much less pixels – 2,073,600, to be precise – will be fed to it’- from the article you so love. You see resolution is still the same, only the gpu is just rendering at a lower quality, thus explains that the gpu will work less. However seeing as still the while screen is still lit, the backlight still have to work overtime and that,as you have mentioned, is another criteria for the battery consumption and why it is only just slightly better..The backlight still has to light up the whole 3.7 million pixels, only it has been stretch to 1080p. The test would be more accurate had the screen been actually used only 2.07 million pixels and the rest left as black bars. Only then you can tell if the display truly affects the battery consumption. It is o.ly slightly better because the gpu has less workload rendering the graphics. Which is pretty common sense.

Read about liquid crystal, they do block light to change their colours. As such, having more of them in a dense area results in more blockage of light. Resulting in, again, more battery consumed by the backlight to push through..
Imagine soil, now imagine you pack them densely, would the water still be able to flow through it as fluidly as the less densely packed soil?
    Same concept.

  • May Czos

    1. Yes, it explains why GPU works less. Therefore we also know how it affects the battery life. Almost not at all. So I think we estabilished that additional GPU load at higher resolution doesn’t play significant role in battery life, right?
    2. Backlight panel doesn’t have to work overtime to light up more pixels because it doesn’t light them up separately. It’s a uniform panel. And it simply doesn’t have to work harder to achieve the same brightness becaue smaller pixels have the same transparency.
    3. Overall it’s another story because power consumption by the backlight panel varies a lot. It depends on panel’s size, brightness and efficiency. As I posted before, the whole display needs just 5% more power going from QHD to 4K resolution. It means that the resoluton itself also plays very little role.

    4. Now we have two separate sources, one shows that GPU doesn’t ruin the battery at higher resolution. Second one (not the phonearena’s link!) shows that doubling the resolution you get just 5% increase in power consumption. Combine the two together – overall higher resolution increases power consumption but the difference is smaller than people think. It’s not killing the battery.
    5. Interesting fact – 5,7″ QHD display in Samsung Note 5 needs 37% less power than 5,5″ FHD panel from iPhone 6+ to display mixed content (text, pictures, movies etc).
