Sony’s Concept for Android: Marshmallow available to try for 10,000 users [Be quick!]

by XB on 7th October 2015

in Android, Firmware, Xperia Z3 series

MarshmallowSony Mobile will give 10,000 users the chance to try Android 6.0 Marshmallow through its “Concept for Android” programme. If you want to participate, you will have to be quick as it is on a first come, first serve basis. Simply download the “Sony´s Concept for Android” application to register your details.

The programme is only open to Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact users in the following countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and United Kingdom. If you are successful, Sony says you will be notified in the coming weeks. The confirmation from the app points to activity expected to start in mid-October.

Even if you are not within one of these countries, you shouldn’t fret too much as the previous concept ended up being available for those outside the programme. There is a good chance the same could happen for this beta Marshmallow concept firmware. Sony Mobile’s Android Concept trial was initially aimed at 500 users in Sweden, so this is a big expansion from that initial beta.

If you are successful, you will be able to install a Sony Xperia Android 6.0 Marshmallow concept firmware to your device. The software will take into account all of the feedback from the first “Concept for Android” beta. Sony says that “Concept for Android” has been built on “prolonged battery life, smooth and fast performance, sleek user interface, Sony apps and experiences and frequent, timely updates.” The concept firmware will receive regular updates based on user feedback.

I hope people who intend to join the beta programme are actually those who would like to contribute to the project, give inputs to make the firmware better and not just for the sake of trying out Sony’s marshmallow firmware and end up talking bad things about it.. Have fun guys..

  • Tanel Aavistu

Can’t get it on Z3C in Estonia. “Sorry this item is not aviliable in your country.”

  • Matt

The most material ui yet :) love it

  • Matt

I do not like to beta test software since I only have the z3 to depend on.

Kudos to people who do and make the os better for us all. Would love to hear the progress

  • mrninko

dont understant country restrictions. i´m from Slovakia but I´m user too and really wanna test and make better sony´s software.

  • Sadman Khan

Don’t forget to post screenshots! And upload the full firmware you guys!

  • Ailan Hidaz

I hope this concept includes that new camera UI we were seeing at the unveiling of the Z5 family of phones!

  • Ailan Hidaz

If it’s any of the users on Xperia blog, you can be sure they will be the complainers and the whiners. Blah blah samsung this iphone that

  • Lukáš Pávl

You mean stockiest than stock UI? If i would ever want stock UI i would go for Nexus. I want something unique, fresh and eye candy like the UI was since 4.0.4 to 4.4.4. I really don’t want something that is trying to look like stock Android.

  • Tsakane

Stock Android PLEASE Sony! Do the right thing.

  • Lukáš Pávl

If you want stock Android go buy Nexus device…

  • Haziq Hasnol Zam Zam

Yeah, that will probably be the case.. Judging by the written post on Sony mobile blog, they did stated that they got positive feedback from the previous beta programme.. I hope that is indeed the case and it will be the same for this one, given the fact that they allow for more participants this time around..

  • Sadman Khan

    Or flash CM or something

  • Adrian M

I hope we have at least a camera :D

  • Lukáš Pávl

I hope that they will be the same people that are in BETA testing of SONY apps (Music, What’s New etc…) because when you look at G+ app Beta testing page you can see people giving feedbacks and actually contributing with ideas (even though devs are doing what they want to do anyway)

  • Adrian M

Also bei mir ging es. Z3 23.4.A.1.200 Deutschland ftf

  • Matt

always the same argument, no it doesnt matter what UI sony makes it cannot please everyone.

vague description of the UI also doesnt help at all , its like saying i want an intriguing and yet wild dinner.

and no 4.4.4 does not have an eye candy its sony apps that does have an eye candy on them . and we still got it on lollipop.

But the good thing is , there is a solution for your UI problem. just disable all updates :) and youll be happy on kitkat UI

  • Lukáš Pávl

  • MixoMaxoViper

Germany with no branding: Not supported
    CE1,5:Not supported
    Why? CE not supported?
Ok, I will wait for FTF

  • sebastianer

Unfortunately, there is no “Compact” phone with 100% stock android. So the Z3C/Z5C are the only nearly options.
That could be one reason because many people want stock android and stay in Sony at the same time.

  • Arch9

    Can you share the apk?

  • Lukáš Pávl

Sure it can’t please everyone. But when you want stock Android you have choices (Nexus or CM, FXP etc…). But if you want something characteristic for SONY well then you are basically fucked. Nobody ever will do the same thing as SONY did with previous Android versions.

4.4.4? yes i think that 4.4.4 was eye candy, maybe not that much like 4.0-4.3 but still it has got something to it. Actually Lollipop on Z3,Z2,Z1 and Z series doesn’t look that bad at all. But Z5 UI and that Concept UI is step backwards into the times of old Gingerbread. I mean text under apps on home screen and half transparent UI? No thanks.

I said i like how KitKat looks not how it works. In terms of functions i love Lollipop. But in terms of design i can imagine a KitKat UI with Material Design overhaul.

  • Ailan Hidaz

    lol good point!

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

actually there are 2 type of people, 1st complainers. 2nd whiners. better go 1st then 2nd. whiners mostly fanboy, complainer is average joe

  • Svnjay

    Stock Android is overrated.

Share the apk please! Upload it to somewhere. I can’t download it from the play store.

Forget about the UI design. I’ll be happy if Sony stops bundling its crapware in Xperia phones.

For starters, don’t bundle the free version of File Commander. There are much better file exploring/managing apps out there.

Then there’s the special breed of silly apps from Sony Mobile Communications: Lifelog, Socialife, Lounge, Sony Select, Sketch and What’s New.

The ‘holy trinity’ of Album, Video and Musiic (formerly Walkman), while more useful, should be made optional and not embedded deep into Android which you cannot uninstall without rooting.

Track ID needs improvement if it needs to compete with Shazam.

The Sony-developed Audio Recorder app can be improved.

And develop something useful, such as an app to scan barcodes, QR codes and performs OCR on scanned text which can then be exported or shared.

  • daniel kudo

Stock is boring and doesn’t have character

  • Lukáš Pávl

File Commander – Agree. There are better alternatives.

Lifelog, Socialife, Lounge etc… – Lifelog and What’s new are actually very needed apps. Lifelog is good for people with SmartBands and through What’s new are updated apps. But I agree that apps like Sketch, Select, Lounge etc.. should not be installed as system apps.

The “holy trinity” – I think those apps are something like a characteristic symbol of Xperia Devices. I think they should stay that way they are. I mean Music app and Album app are one of the best apps. For Video there are better alternatives.

Track ID – Well i think it’s pretty decent app. Shazam is lately acting more like social network than music recognition app. And in terms of music recognition is Shazam only slightly better.

Recorder app – Good concept but it looks like devs abondoned this app. and there are better alternatives than this one.

QR/Barcode reader – There are literally tons of QR/Barcode scanners in the Play store so why waste recources on developing new app? And i actually never met somebody who use apps like this often.

To sum this up i’d say that i agree with you that pre-installed apps should not be deeply imbeded within system and all of them should have the option to uninstall them. But i don’t think that SONY will even consider this option.

Am a Windows insider user & using Windows 10 since oct 2014 & involved in windows development process but still no luck for sony.

  • Cristiano de Oliveira

something near of it. But with functionalities of sony. There are some elements that sony doesn’t need to change.

  • Wolf0491

Damn says my z3 dual is incompatible

  • Agree – to much I disable and uninstall… It’s okay they have the apps, but I wish that I at least could choose which programs there should be installed then I start the phone from scratch.

I doesn’t use any of the Sony apps… and QR – well.. have my favorite, so no problem for me…

FYI, there is a camera extension called Info-Eye that can scan text, barcodes and images.

  • Malih

maybe it’s a language thing, not every user are fluent in technical software english in all countries.

  • mrninko

Would be fine if they write: english firmware, feedback and support only! I just resolved the problem! :D

  • GregLu

So basically it seems to be a AOSP like rom … Sorry but if I bought a Sony it wasn’t for having an AOSP like experience since the UI in the my Z3c is already very nice and smooth !

An update has been added to the blog post:
“Due to overwhelming demand during the first 24 hours, we experienced some slight technical issues with the “Sony’s Concept for Android” application on Google Play – these have now been resolved, so we’d encourage those of you who had a problem to download the app again. We’ve also seen a few questions & queries re: why a certain device is appearing as incompatible; the initiative is open to variants: Xperia Z3 (D6603) and Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803) in the specified markets below. Thanks for all the interest so far!”

  • Iucidium

Give me a close to stock device with Sony’s design and brilliant battery life over a nexus any day.

  • Iucidium

Ui skins are overrated and also add to delays
    See: Samsung, htc

  • Iucidium

We what phones that work, not bootlooping pocket warmers.

  • Iucidium

You want a unique ui? Get a launcher/icon pack.

  • Sadman Khan

Then flash some version of AOSP that works

  • Iucidium

There are always kinks/something that doesn’t exactly works with AOSP ROMs. Been there, done that in the past.

  • Svnjay

Stock android is missing features that have been in skins for years.
