Android 6 Marshmallow Concept_1Sony Mobile has confirmed that it has today started to roll the Concept for Android: Marshmallow firmware builds for the Xperia Z3 series. A few lucky people have already begun to receive invites, however Sony says the Android 6.0 Marshmallow concept firmware will be roll gradually “over the coming weeks.” Sony also says that it has released some more spaces for the program, so if you’re quick you may still get a place on the beta.

Nothing to lose for older Xperia Z series… Phew!!!

  • ramuk

I would love to have a even more stock android look than what we have now. It should speed up the update process.

  • asgaro
  • I just received my invite. It’s nice to see them supporting Macs with the installation software for a change! I can’t update yet though as I have some work apps I need to get codes for to reinstall on a spare phone as this says it will wipe everything on it.

  • David Hvatov

Looks boring and ugly for me.

  • jlmcr87x

Sony Marshmallow return to stock android concept. I like it!

  • Dexter Moregan

Sony’s Marshmallow Concept, Really? It’s Google’s Marshmallow obviously! I hate it.

  • MixoMaxoViper

Everyone who got the link/installator gave it to us!

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

Same here, still hoping for some features to balance ugliness

  • dragonsneeze

Doesn’t the Z5 UI look like this?

  • SM

too much flat UI…almost same like lolipop

  • Shaif Ayon

Great selection of UI.It really makes the premium feel of Sony even more premium…
    #Cleaner #LightWeight #Speedy

  • The xperia ui has lost its identity

  • No it doesn’t. But it’s easy to see how people can get confused, since Sony utilises a stock-like approach to skinning their tweaked Android Xperia devices.

  • That’s the whole point of the Concept program… To provide a stock Android experience (in this case Marshmallow) with full hardware support from Sony (drivers etc) to those who want to try it out and provide feedback to Sony so the final skinned release can be the most pleasing and bug free.

At least Sony do this, whereas other OEMs simply release their update, then people complain of bugs, issues and so on.

  • MarkLastiwka

Looks like the Z5 series launcher

  • dragonsneeze

I’m not saying it’s exactly the same. It’s just very similar looking already. UX and apps maybe different but that’s another story.

  • MarkLastiwka

The icons are different, but the UI looks the same

  • Kevin Pang

It looks like stock Android which is not Sony’s style at all. I mean, it depends whether Sony’s features will be added or not. If not, then there would be no difference between this and a Nexus device. And Nexus devices are far more cheaper.

  • Lukáš Pávl

    No, thank you SONY.

  • SkyS1gn

They should completely move over to this OS as default, like motorola exc. bringing updates and stuff faster.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Use Helium backup tool to backup the data of your apps :) then you can place the backup on any Android devices you like ;)

  • sebastianer

Damm I’d love to have this in my Z5 Compact.

Please Z3 users share some screenshots with the RAM Usage (under Apps menu).
In 5.1.1 my Z5 Compact is having poor free RAM.

  • Zarko Dragojevic

Thank you for the good comment, mate. I don’t get it, why People are complaining. You get the full Vanilla-Experience on your Xperia-Device with official Support from Sony. It won’t void warranty and you can try something new on your Xperia.
I’m using since 2010 Sony Smartphones and the user experience and UI hasn’t changed quite a lot. That’s not a bad Thing, because Sony’s Software is great, but it’s still nice to have to possibility of Change.
When they first released the Concept for Sweden, I thought, well…i’d still stay with Sony’s Android, because of some Extra-Features as the double tap to wake up an especially the Stamina-Mode.
But since something very similar to the Stamina-Mode is implemented in Android 6.0, I’d love to try the Marshmallow-Concept.
Unfortunately, I live in Switzerland and there’s not the possibility to sign up for the upgrade program.

  • Try the XDA posted installer mate, I never got the Sony email (yet) as it’s a staggered rollout, but the installer works! I’m now on Marshmallow ahead of the email notification :)

  • GregLu

Does someone has a screenshot of the status bar with the quick toggle to see if they use the google one instead of the old Sony one ? I do like the one in my Z3c on 4.4.4 … And i’d rather prefer to wait over 6.0 instead of 5.x which isn’t good IMO.

  • Cristiano de Oliveira

I like it a lot! I Hope faster updates come with it. :3

  • Abhi

Looks nice and hopefully means faster updates, due to reliance on stock Google apps.

  • akzidenz

    rip sony home button ;_;

very ugly. i like sony because of its design, if i want this shit i would install cyanogen.

  • inb4: Nexus Z

  • ymytbb .

    I like those icons.

  • CyanogenMod User detected :-D

  • Cakefish

So much better. Now it just needs the stock settings icon too and it would be perfect. Marshmallow update can’t come soon enough if this is what we’re getting! :D

  • Kausshal Srivastava

Please give android 6 Marshmallow for Xperia Z also!

  • Iucidium

But they don’t have the design and battery life of an xperia.

  • Iucidium

Use the Google now launcher ;)

  • Iucidium

  • Iucidium

    I don’t want a skin.

  • Aiden Pearce

atleast they are not thinking of completly f*** it up with Vertical app drawer which imo looks chilldish and old age like Symbian OS.

  • jamie evans

Today I saw a “Made for Bond Z5” TV commercial on TV in the US and was very happy and surprised lol. Still, no US carriers are going to pick up Z5 Prmeium??

  • mrninko

Guys, it’s just concept!!! They wanna fix bugs, graphic and design go at the beginning! So please call down:D

  • Matt

    its exactly like nexus PLUS!

vanilla android , faster update , not as bare bone as nexus on feature front.

its a win win win for me

  • As long as it is fast and responsive and open/close apps in no time. Im in for it.

  • hansip

I do wonder, why don’t Sony implement the swipe up to open drawer just like the first gen Xperia? It was cool back then, compared to pres icon to open app drawer now.

  • mrninko

that´s because it´s just concept. final version will get sony´s style. so if you wanna stock buy nexus:D:D

  • Chan Kin Cheung

    that’s why they are cheaper

  • Peter Ward

I only recently got 5.1 on my Z Ultra so I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for this to hit my phone, I’ll probably have replaced it before it happens.

  • Andrea

  • I tried that once before but it didn’t work as they have encrypted containers and it breaks the apps.

  • It’s the stock Android 6.0 toggles screen. But tbh the Sony 5.x one isn’t that different to 4.4.4 anyway.

    Here is my screenshot.

  • GregLu

Thanks for the screenshot but it’s not the same on the 4.4.4 where there is the toggle on the right, I’d prefer that actually…

    The clock is hideous.

  • Michael

Definition of Insanity (Sony): Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result every time

  • iia3ezu

I’ll gladly buy a Sony Nexus, if that’s the only way to get rid of the pre-installed Sony crapware without rooting or tweaks.

For example, get rid of Album and install Google Photos.

And I don’t know what deal Sony had made with Mobisoft but I don’t want File Commander pre-installed in my Xperia phone.

Music (formerly known as Walkman): make it optional. There are far better music playing apps out there.

  • Zarko Dragojevic

If you go the official way to get the concept for android, by signing up for their program, you won’t loose warranty for sure.
I’m not 100% sure if you’d still have warranty, when you flash it yourself. In most forums, people are saying, as long as you don’t unlock the bootloader or root the phone and flash .ftf-Files using Sony’s own flashtool, it won’t void warranty.

Maybe this is a question XB can help us with. I will contact them and post the reply afterwords.

  • Lorenzo

Thank you vero much, you re so kind!

  • Zarko Dragojevic

Great. Is it working stable? If so, i think i will try it. Can you recommend an app to backup all my apps? Or could you tell me, if you can use the Xperia Transfer app on the marshmallow concept? Because this app works only with Xperia devices.

  • Matt

Jesus, just one swipe Down instead right :p

  • Matt

    Well not that far :p

  • GregLu

Why are you bringing Jesus here ? Did I spoke about religion ? I don’t think so and I’m offended.

Ps : just kidding, don’t care, it’s just that I think that it kinda waste space on the notification area ;-)

  • Matt

Poor free ram means you’re using your phone ;).

If there is lag then it is a problem if not that means your phone uses it’s hardware efficiently

  • Matt

Everybody confused at anything these days.

Im not surprised if one think this is the final software

  • Matt

People do not like change at all.

But the strange thing is when it comes to exterior of the phone they want change on every iteration.

The point is people do not know what they want and this material look on 5.1.1 and hopefully 6.0 is Sonys guess to win people’s heart.

Personally I think it is great :)
Sony apps and Google apps looks like eachother in one phone, fully integrated on the design front with Sony twist on Sony apps side.

  • HAWX

Sony don’t design much anymore. They just look what Google is doing and make their ones similar to them. It’s simple, safe, and cheaper to integrate. I reversed mine to 4.2.2 and I don’t think UI is eye hurting with material icons.. Old Sony design’s philosophy was “Details makes the diffrence.”. I still agree with them :)

  • Zarko Dragojevic

I agree. As for now, it is great, that you can choose if you want to stick with the Sony UI or the Stock Android.
Sony isn’t forcing anyone to use this new concept. So why should anyone complain?

All the comments like: ‘eew…it’s ugly…i don’t like it’ and so on, are inappropriate. I mean, first of all, if someone doesn’t like the Stock-UI, it’s certainly not Sony’s fault. Second…if you don’t like it, then don’t use it. It is that simple.

I’d understand people be unhappy if Sony would release a regular update and the Sony-UI would be gone, suddenly. But as long as that’s not the case…there is no reason to complain.

  • mrninko

My mistake, not call down, but calm down:D

  • Armands Lazdins

I got in, if anyone has any questions I’ll be glad to answer. The UI is indeed very similiar to stock android but that’s not a bad thing by any means. Everything has been working so far with the exception of speaker volume being a bit lower (might be placebo). I’m running Z3 by the way.

  • Le Kawaii Potatoe

I want something like Samsung’s, where you can horizontally scroll through the quick settings. Just because it’s bothersome to swipe down twice :D

  • Kunal Shukla

if sony won’t offer any good software features why anyone would buy a sony device. They will skip to motorola.

  • Kunal Shukla

all of their decisions and i really mean all lead to one conclusion. Sony will have to sell off their mobile division soon. Z5 is again plagued with back glass breaking problem, Z5 compact devices have issues with touch and screen which was their in my xperia SP as well. Moto X play with sony sensor outperformed Z5 cam in daily usage scenarios. Those artefacts still present even in bright light and blurry images on corner.

  • Kunal Shukla

sony unveiling its flagship devices in India tomorrow and their pricing would be another such decision. It would be on par with iPhone and much expensive than the S6.

  • Snorky112

  • Snorky112

aw yea, maybe make a review of what’s changing ?

  • Deckard_Cain

They should enter an agreement with the Nova Launcher devs and use that launcher instead. :P

  • Iucidium

    Google now launcher

  • Iucidium

It’s not the fact they don’t like change. They wish to be ‘unique’ not a nexus/Touchwiz/iOS user.

  • Iucidium

Or, you can install it yourself.
    Everyone wins!

  • Nasos Vasileiadis

Can this be ported to XPERIA Z2?

  • LeNegro

no one buys a phone for having preinstalled bloatware

  • Emil Oskarsson

Haven’t experienced anything like that on my end :) maybe it was a really old version of the app you tried??

  • Cristiano de Oliveira

    haha nope :P

  • Kunal Shukla

em not saying pre install it with software just simple feature and customization that will make smartphone experience better

  • Igorbass

    Oh, No )=
    Not like the pure Android

  • sebastianer

Yes but in Lollipop with the 5.0.X memory leak bug in a Nexus 5, If the ram descended from 1200MB (Regular) to 800MB (memory leaked) or less RAM, the phone used to lose performance.

Anyway…after more research (in the Nexus 5X topic) I think the cause is Android x64.
Apparently, Nexus 5X consumes a lot of RAM too compared to the Nexus 5.

  • Matt

Oh nonononono im more offended, this is Internet and I’m always more right than you, random person

Hahah :p and now for the comment.
I do think the implementation is a bit better but I got the vibe that the right swipe on kit kat was a bit faster and more accurate. :)

  • Matt

Hmm I wasn’t aware of the memory leak bug that is present in 5. 0. X

Did Google fixed it on 5.X. Release?

That is why I asked whether the phone lose performance. If not that you have nothing to worry about ;)

  • Matt

It is simply impossible to please everyone :)

  • Matt

    Yep you can’t please everyone.

For example the white ui on music app. It took me awhile to get used to it. But the look is quite pleasing indeed.

Then again I do like material. If anyone do not like it and wants to put black on absolutely everything
Google xperia z black transformation pack for Existenz Rom. And have your lollipop be ugly in no time.

  • Matt

4.2.2? What phone do you have HAWX? Z1? Or did z2 launched with 4.2.2?

Yea different stokes for different blokes. I’m digging the more borderless launcher on kitkat though. Quite interested on what Sony will do for.6.0

  • sebastianer

Yes It was fixed (or almost 95% mitigated) in 5.1.1

Well, the Z5 compact has excellent battery life…42% left and 3 hours of SoT and my day it’s almost done (all the day in LTE with 1/4 bars).

But on the contrary, the performance is not good (compared to my previous nexus 5 phone). And the camera, the macro photos aren’t good (they have no definition).
Now some landscape photos are fantastic and some others are average.

So I think I’m returning it and I’ll wait more time to upgrade my N5 (2013 ). And of course, I’ll have to stand a maximum of 2 hours and a half of SoT. (Yes N5 battery sucks).

  • Matt

nexus 5 battery sucks ? no surprise there :P

i would also suggest you wait for the next iteration with literally anything else other than 810. yes heat issue has been fixed, but my sony implementation of heatsink. sony haven’t updated the camera with new firmware that reminds to be seen :)

i really hope 820 be brilliant . so that sony can build a big battery in there :)

  • Kristo

    aka insanity

  • Armands Lazdins

Well, it doesn’t really differ much from stock android. There are no small aps, themes. Stock theme is that of z5 series. UI feels very snappy and battery life has been alright so far (only had it running for 2 days so take it with a grain of salt). I also got 2 surveys about future of sony and how sattisfied I am with the 6.0 so far.

Overall it can be used as daily phone for sure.

  • No difference except for design (not that I care), battery life, microSD slot, PS4 connectivity, Small Apps etc.

  • HAWX

I have Z right at the moment :) I had Z2 and Z3 of mt friends and used them but I gave them back after using them about 1 week. And maybe I would buy Z5 Compact for one of my relatives in the future, mainly because of it’s compact size, battery life and front camera. Yeah I’m curious about if Sony will do something new for 6.0 :) But I think they won’t be bad as Samsung or LG :D! When I see LG icons icons they remind me kindergarten children for some reason xD

  • sebastianer

I think that Sony has not issues with the battery.
But the camera and the performance (in Z5 Compact) needs to be optimized! (Videos are fine btw).
And they need to give better options to people who prefer stock android. For instance, an option to disable “Smart Apps” (that ADB “hide” option is just a workaround..not a real solution).

I’ve been using nexus for over 3 years, and I gave this chance to Sony.

I hope they update the Z5 Compact as soon as possible to see how is that camera firmware.

  • Ashwini Singh

Guys don’t you think camera quality of Xperia Z2 and Z3 series was much better on kitkat compared to lollipop. So we should complain about the quality that they provide and not the UI.

  • Ashwini Singh

Although they have provided improvements in 5.1.1 but it’s not up to the mark.

  • Vinny Conforto

I love the way it looks

  • Timel

I want Sony to add some nice TSF Shell’s smooth animations to Xperia UI

Xperia UI feels laggy so most parts of the UI need smooth animation effects

  • Timel

    Sony will lose their uniqueness

Sony can’t make their own RAM and chipset, now can’t even make their own UI

If Xperia smartphones come up with the Android stock UI then it means Sony is nothing but just a hardware company which is under Google.

  • Timel

Still waiting for the useful multitasking feature like split screens feature from Sony

  • Timel

    It looks too cheap

This cheap interface don’t deserve the classy hardware at all

  • Cant agree more on that. I was just talking in the manner of its responsiveness which shouldn’t lag whatever they are presenting. Plus, like u, i feel the same now that yes Sony has its own distinguished, light and lag-free identity throughout all OEMs’ UIs and in Android, Sony’s UI clearly stands out and they were constantly refining it at each major software update. but now yes, they are being lazy and doing things the Google way which would result in Sony losing its identity among its customers.

  • Matt

What stick me up the most is the notification centre on LG UI. Or should I say toggle centre. Half of it are eaten by toggles, app launcher, and brightness slider. God it’s awful.

Oh xperia z :) the Genesis

  • Matt

Yea OTA can’t cone soon enough ;)
    It will come eventually.

No I do not think it should be an option at all. It’s hard enough to push software update. If you add the toggles and everything the complications are greater thus chance of it breaking. And it will cost money and time to fix millions and millions of unit with yet another update. Money that Sony mobile currently don’t have.

Suggestion for people who wants Sony to update Z1 to 6.0. Intead of useless petition. Why try to kick-start the update? I mean you literally pay Sony for extended software support in this case 6.0.

If enough people are throwing money at Sony, I bet it will work a lot better than relentlessly shouting in online forum

  • Adhi Suryana

    Nobody mention about less bloatware??

  • Timel

SORRY! but Xperia is not Nexus.

  • Tommy He

A bit surprised to see someone could read so much about Sony just with a concept firmware.
