TrackID music recognition service closing down

by XB on 3rd July 2017

in Applications

In an unexpected move, Sony Mobile will be closing its TrackID music discovery app on 15 September 2017. The reason for the closure hasn’t been given, with Sony simply saying that “all businesses move forwards, and sometimes this means that apps are discontinued”.

Unfortunately, this means that your TrackID history will also be lost after this date, so if this important to you, then you should find a means of recreating the list elsewhere. Sony is recommending users to try Shazam as its top pick in recognising music.

Did you use TrackID? Are you sad that Sony is shuttering another app service? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Thanks difwwh!

  • Thank God, I never used that thing.
In fact, I never used any service account that came with the Sony.

  • Dexter Moregan

WTF! I use this app frequently.

  • foxy

    What the hell Sony!

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

Using it since 2007 on my SE P1i, sad.
So, maybe Sony Mobile Division closing too

  • Ming William Lee

Seems all those interesting stuff during SEMC time is gone. Tbh I think there are way many things should be on the list before TrackID (use it quite a lot since my LT18i) , such as What’s new.

  • Squirtle 1

@xperiablog. On the app when I read the comments a new site appear. Looks like a fake add.

  • Ostap Koloda

what a foolish choice you made

  • Jerry Berglund

In a sense I can understand because the TrackID only worked for popularmusic. It was really bad to find soundtracks, classical or contemporary music like non-mainstream music. So I did install Shazam and it did take quite a lot classical. Still not good, but much better. It could even understand me singing a classical tune… TrackID was though the best for some years ago.

  • Liam Burke

its a shame, i used trackId on old Sony Ericsson Phones like W980

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

Something going away means something better is coming to replace it.

Small apps multitasking was removed and was replaced by Nougat’s split screen, which is way better, and same is through here.
Idk what will it be, but I feel like it’s gonna break another ground again.

  • Akand

How Sony is closing its services, it seems Xperia will also be closed. Though it’s high time to find alternative, but I am struggling to find it. This is the first time I am feeling insecure about Sony. They’re closing everything turn by turn. Xperia Keyboard and Xperia Launcher will be missed greatly. If they can team up with Jolla and make it perfect OS, only then I’ll be able to compromise Xperia Launcher. Who knows what’s going there in Sony!! Are they giving up???

  • Román Rodríguez

I’ve always used Shazam is so much better than TrackID so it’s not surprise that Sony is shuting down this service. Besides it didn’t find every song, Shazam does.

  • razorg

So sad, also a fitting decision. It was never as good as Shazam, in terms of song recognition, it wants you to be glued to the speaker which plays the song you’re trying to identify etc… Apart from that, UI and Xperia integration-wise, I liked it quite a lot. Wish they had improved the recognition abilities….

  • jokensy

Shazam and soundhound are better anyway. So, no regrets.

  • Борис Михаилов

Oh wow. I use this since my k550… I hope they will make a deal with Shazam or some other service where we could transfer our search history.

  • mUSICA

Man I Loved Track ID Even Shazam Couldnt Find Songs Wich I Wanted :(

  • Okazuma

    I’m really sad :-(

  • Gutt Grinder

So when is Sony’s Xperia going to shutdown? For me they haven’t provided something new. The only flagship that I still consider until this day is the Z2 (still using it until now).

  • Vitali

And there are still no explanations on why did they abandon their Xperia Keyboard.. Does anyone know??

  • Aleksey Pereshein

    No No No!!!

  • HAWX

Sad to hear. I am using Shazam Track ID Soundhound combo. But Its really bothersome that they don’t provide any proper transfering of the history of your findings. Track ID is has been most useful Sony spesific App to me. I find this desicion wrong.

  • Alessandro Romano

It is so useful to track the list of songs :( sad

  • V.

Just saw this. Never had problems with trackid it always found whatever I was searching. I’m heartbroken

  • Night Guy

It is a popular app since sony ericsson era and u just simply shut it down? LOL.

  • Szabó Béla

LT18i aka the Ray of light. I started there as well. Have my history going back till very long time. I’am sad….

  • Night Guy

Xperia z5 still has “small apps multitasking”

  • Ming William Lee

Just remembered my T707 with UIQ actually got Track ID and can track the music in FM Radio… Seems a huge step backwards…

  • Alex

What possible reasons can there be for shutting this service down? How much can it possibly cost to run?

I’m disappointed, I like to use TrackID quite often should I need to and I have actually been using it since my Xperia X10, the first Sony Android phone! In fact, it was even on my Sony Ericsson C510 (although my history didn’t transfer across for obvious reasons) – my TrackID history still shows songs I picked up back in 2010 on my X10!

Just another needless app closure IMO and their reason given on the screenshot above is such a cop out!

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

maybe sony want to reduce cost to maintain those app.

  • SopNaw

Completely agree. One time, I really thinking to use only TrackID instead of Shazam but it recognized only popular music. So, I moved to Shazam.

  • Moisés

That sucks … Keyboard, calendar, sms.. Video& TV Sideview no longer shows the schedule of the channels.
    And now this…
I wonder how long Smart Connect and Music will be around.

It seems easier to cut costs than earning by selling phones. Plastic frame, small bateries, hybrid slot ..

Btw, XZP arrives here in middle july… About 1200,00 american dollars. Same price G6 and S8 were released.

  • Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use this app very much!!!

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

Oh no…that’s quite sad. It’s one of the first app that I actually found useful.

  • Akiraigo5

  • fried_egg

Pity as it was very useful… But I understand why they might think it’s a crowded marketplace and they weren’t winning growth

  • fried_egg

If a z2 is all you need perhaps you arn’t really into phones hence your reluctance to change a 3 year old model

  • Objectif

This news make me sad. I use this app since it start with Sony Ericsson. Bad news.

  • sonya_y

You shouldn’t get used to Sony Apps. They don’t last.

  • NinJy

Same here, good old time before shazam and all those ad craps

  • DanielGearSolid

Pretty good app, sad to see it’s going. Do the other music recognition apps also have the option to add songs to your Spotify Playlist?? That’s was my favorite part of this app

  • Moisés

When I open it here, there is no warning…

  • Keshav Burtony

This was one of my most used Sony apps..Sad to hear this..Was so useful..

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

Damn I use it a lot, well I guess not anymore

  • Mahesh

    Nooooooo….. Sony….
Another unique beautiful app going away from our lives…
    SEMC days the best days…
Thank you Sony for those memories..
But when shutting down lots of services, please start something new…

  • Gahead

So Sad, although there’s Shazam, I’m still used on Track ID since my first Xperia, the Xperia P.
    -Social life
    -“Walkman” name music app
    – Movies app

    I can’t take this.

  • dquilon

Ever since Google baked the functionality into Google Now, I only use the Music Search widget and take a screenshot of the result. No extra apps.

You already have that on your widgets, look it up

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

I stopped using it and moved on to SoundHound long time back. Really good. Shazam should be good too.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

So Xperia division is next? If they don’t listen to consumers.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Their cameras, PS, are doing fine. Don’t know about TVs.

  • Akshay Persad

No it doesn’t mean he isn’t into phones…it just means he is reluctant to part with a large sum if money in exchange for another Sony phone with no notable or worthy upgrade in features or performance…because arguably, there is none.

  • Raj Singh

Vexed. I use this application almost everyday. I prefer it over all others. Love the interface, love the global charts and the live feature too. Very disappointing.

  • Madis

Only app from Sony I actually liked and used. It even had active development and it has good rating it Google Play (4.4 out of 5 today, 3th of July, 2017). I assume the service maintenance is too costly and they don’t get enough money out of it.

  • Talos the Robot

This app was very usefull for me every time i wanted to find the Artist of a song i was hearing on the radio. I have tried Shazam but it was wasting a lot of battery power and i uninstalled it.

  • Gutt Grinder

Finally someone with intelligence! I really love Sony products, I do have their TV and PS4 (spent a lot of money buying games). It just happens that nothing changed since the Z2 arrived. I’m waiting for Sony to give out a new phone that will surely worth the upgrade, but sadly none.

My Z2 is still working fine as is but until then, if Sony isn’t going to make a new phone that will surely catch peoples interest. Then they might as well as close down their mobile dept.

  • iia3ezu

Another one of Sony’s crapware bites the dust.

Used TrackID for about half a year, I rate it 4/10. Many songs and instrumental soundtracks couldn’t be detected. Detection is poor when there is ambient sound e.g. in a mall.

And even when the song is detected, the album art almost always gets messed up. For example, TrackID randomly selects a re-release compilation album instead of the original release.

There were a few pleasant surprises e.g. obscure oldies from Japan (1970s – 1980s). Seems like if the singer/band wasn’t famous enough or belonged to one of the ‘big name’ recording companies, TrackID doesn’t recognize the music. Not good enough.

This is the era of the Cloud and AI assistant, there’s really no excuse.

I have about 30 songs in my TrackID history… so I’m not missing much. I’ll take some screenshots as mementos.

P.S: Let’s see which next Sony app/service gets axed… Audio Recorder? Weather?

  • dpc4321

Holy smoke! XZP is an awesome phone and I absolutely love mine but that’s some price!

  • Felipe Loyola Martínez

I use Track ID frequently. Track ID comes by default on my XA Ultra. When it stops working, it will be dead space as it can not be uninstalled. Sony will remove an update that eliminates Track ID? And why does Sony recommend Shazam? A while ago they switched Xperia Keyboard by SwiftKey. Is there a negotiated in these changes?

  • Tochi Nwodu

My beloved track id :( using you since my w850i
    I think i hand it on k750i
Then it got so popular on shake control w910i
    Good old days

  • Matt

nah, its fine. xperia software are leaner now :D

keep trowing all google apps clone away sony, make the closest stock android possible.

  • fried_egg

which by your own logic equation means the Z2 (like my Z1 which I replaced with a Z5) got a design that was ahead of the pack and changes since have seen to the user as only a slight improvement even though they have stayed compettitive to the competition… my Z5 now has 7.1.1 which is better than a lot of 6 month old phones let alone brand new ones… so either he doesnt like Sony or he does.. he slagged sony off for making a great phone. What does he want, a pineapple core knife in it? Yeah exactly.

  • fried_egg

the XZ premium has had very very good reviews yet all that is different is it has HDR 4K on a very similar package to older phones design… what is it you want ? other than the screen what has the Galaxy S8 got that the Sony doesnt? and they are top of the tree.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Now when they are finally making money on their phones why would they close their mobile division? :p

  • Andrew

The last time I bought Xperia Z5 the key reasons (among a few other) were the integration of the Track ID with FM radio. I love the Track Id and FM radio (I have practically unlimited data on my plan so streaming is not a reason).
It seems that Sony with every new smartphone model is continuously and deliberately reducing the features I love and expected from Sony.
So my search for a new phone is now on, and sadly I cannot see that this time it will by Sony!

  • shenoy

Sony is royally screwing SEMC trademark apps. It’s sad but Let’s us see where it ends. Biggest mistake was sony ditched SE MOB DESIGN LANGUAGE. Now others.

  • Stephen

Nooooooooooo. I loved this. I even went to find it and installed it on my Asus phone when I had that. And f**k Shazaam I am not using that. I didn’t even know what it was until I read here about Sony recommending it. It’s such an innocuous little app in their set – it is baffling why they are ditching it. What they NEED to do is not force me to have pointless Facebook on my phone with no way to uninstall the app – I don’t have a Facebook account!!

  • Moisés

Yeah… It is 700 dollars on ebay. I saw yesterday.

  • Oh my… I also had an X10, and also gonna miss this app! :(

  • Biancoceleste

Bummer, I use it a lot.

  • iia3ezu

Never used Timescape, so no comment about that.

Social life and Movie apps? Good riddance.

Also, the era of the Walkman has died long ago since the 1990s, when Discman took over. Discman has since died too, killed by iPod.

Sony could have still paid tribute to the Walkman by keeping the FM radio, which is a very useful feature for a phone. Xperia XZ Premium doesn’t have FM radio… that’s all you need to know.

  • iia3ezu

Sony will continue for a long time: it’s doing well in its Playstation, camera and movie licensing (some flop movies though e.g. Ghostbusters 2016).

It’s the Xperia mobile division which will be eliminated. That means this site is reduced to a nostalgia fansite.

  • iia3ezu

Maybe Sony got paid to do so? You can’t just randomly recommend another company’s products without its approval.

A while ago they switched Xperia Keyboard by SwiftKey.

Microsoft now owns Swiftkey. In this case, Sony would have to pay Microsoft.

  • Utsav Shah

Dude I used it since my K550i. Fuck this!

  • Sultan Albatati

playmemories apps, walkman become music, xperia keyboard, calendar, messaging apps, and now track id apps. i know track id just worked with popular song, but i love this apps as sony identity. sony give me a deep memory with their apps lol

  • Alvin

Yup! Not a nice move there. Great apps those are exclusive to Sony are slowly fading away.

  • Mutlu Ertuğuş

eeee, come oooon. it’s a freaking awesome service and i don’t want to lose it…

  • A foolish choice, by your standards, however a very wise choice, considering Sony’s next move. Use Shazam or something similar.

  • ShinOrochiX

One by one they’re getting rid of all their unique apps, seems as if it is more than just moving forwards (which is a poor reason in itself).

  • ShinOrochiX

Me too, ex X8 user here…

  • KKTK

Finally – nobady was using it. Can I uninstall it?

  • AllanKafka

“All businesses move forwards, and sometimes this means that apps are discontinued” sounds Japanese in an almost stereotypical way ;)

  • Gahead

I know, I possess a Z5 Compact and an XZ, since the XZ , fm radio doesn’t exist on flagships, I use timescape that time for the sole purpose of posting on facebook and twitter(not viewing) because I like how it shows “Via Xperia smartphone by Sony”

Walkman meanwhile well there’s still walkman, if you’re too familiar with Sony today, Walkman still exist for audiophiles , tried one of them and it’s superb! the Walkman ZX2, the Walkman ZX2 is the reason I don’t use spotify and became obsessed with Hi resolution music plus the Sony headsets (MDR Z1R)

  • MyLive

SAD.. TrackID is like SONY exclusive default app like walkman/music.. Why not TrackID upgrading its capabilities like the one on Shazam? TBH I never install any music apps and stuff other than SONY pre-installed.. And thats why I choose SONY xperia for that!

  • Preben Stub

I just did, without any problems! :)

  • ArtemBunas

It is just a shame on Sony, that it was the first ever app of recognising music such an easy way, and now it just fading away in such a manner.

  • Abhi

You can use SoundHound, you can even hum into it and will detect a song. Even Google voice search can detect songs now. I only tried TrackID once, it was nowhere near as accurate as SoundHound.

  • Abhi

Tried TrackID once, not very accurate in comparison to SounHound, which even lets you hum songs. SoundHound is probably the best I’ve used. Even Google search has a similar function.

  • Cong Luo

Sony should open source it, instead of just throw it away.

  • Luis Anc

i always have errors with this app. i never find a song…never.

  • azzido

I was uaing this app frequently and only with FM Radio. Since Sony banned radio I stopped using Track ID.

FM radio is such a simple thing :(

  • azzido

I completely do not understand why they continue to remove features and functions. Over and over again…

    When Sony explain this?

  • MrWalker1000

shazam is superior pretty much. the software just couldnt keep up with shazam i stopped using track id because of that.

  • MrWalker1000

shazam is smply better. track id is behind in software recognition.

  • owl

oh gosh… now how do i track music from the fm radio?!

  • Nexalion NS

Hi, someone know how to exit Xperia music beta?? I exit the google plus comunitty and unistall and all updates but in my new Xperia i have the beta, and i don’t wanna it, what i have to do to exit the beta?

  • hamboy

I wonder if this also means it will stop working on Bravia TVs which have TrackID built in

  • Kissinger Githinji

I am very sad and disappointed by Sony Mobile. I tried using Shazam on a non-Sony device and didn’t like it. It was such a flawless app and I don’t think I will love Shazam the way I did TrackID.

  • Lukas kristensen

Shazam can pack their stuff up and get out of here. TrackID, were there long before, and they know what they are doing, not nice, not nice at all Sony

  • sam hadman

Wtf Sony why you are removing the good things I used this app since 90’s

  • Fern

I’m gutted! Please don’t close it down! It’s way better than shazam, and other similar apps, recognises so much more. You best change your mind!

  • Jethrow

Where I come from, we say “If noone knows what it’s all about, it’s surely about money”. I guess Sony no longer earned money in any way (directly or indireclty) with this service and didn’t see a chance to change this situation.

  • Marko Zajc

The fuck is wrong with Sony. This is like their only useful app (everything else is garbage)

  • khairul USacc

I use this App all the time. It can even detect foreign languages like malay and chinese song.

  • Jonathan

I feel like sony is just pushing me away little by little. I know it’s just an app but I used this with my Spotify subscription. Even tho I love my xz premium, and have owned nothing but Sony phones. Next phone just might not be Sony. And I understand I’m just one person but I’ve been a Sony fan for 20 years, and if there getting me to move away, I can imagine how others are feeling.

  • lembrg

TrackID uses the Gracenote daabases / APIs. Sony bought Gracenote in 2008.
In 2014 Tribune Media Company bought Gracenote from Sony Corporation of America. In December 2016, Tribune announced that it had reached an agreement to sell Gracenote to Nielsen Holdings, PLC. for $560 million. The purchase was completed on February 1, 2017.
So I assume, that this future closure is caused by some licensing changes made by the new Gracenote owners.
    Simple like that.

  • Artur Kask

Holy shit this is one of the best app ever made ! Why close? Its practically like closing google of music!!!

  • Hüendli

Shame really! After I got my first Xperia (arc in 2011), I’d let it compete against Shazam and Soundhound and found out that it was much quicker and had better recognition than those two (just back then maybe but whatever). So I went on using it on my Z and even installed it when I replaced that one by an S6 edge (and even stuck to it when the colour changed from blue to purple). I’ve always liked its sleek, simple UI and its widget for quick accessibility, so I hate reading those news. As others already pointed out, Sony Mobile is more and more giving away its brand identity!

  • larstr

I’ve been trying to uninstall this app from my Xperia, but since it’s a system app it’s not possible to remove it without rooting it. Now I hope it’ll finally be gone!

  • Violet

Today’s the sad day. I don’t understand why they are only telling people to install Shazam instead – did they buy up Shazam perhaps? Regardless, I’ve installed SoundHound in protest.

Sony keep doing this. They are always way ahead of the pack in so many things with their phones, then they just pull features for no reason.

TrackID was far superior to Shazam. Disappointed doesn’t come close to describing how I feel about Sony closing it.

  • Jamie

I have used track I’d since it first started appearing on mobile devices a brilliant app quick to load easy to use ideal for catching the last 30 seconds of that song you been trying to find out the name of I used it often an original and genius idea for those times when you hear a new track you haven’t heard before or one you heard but never knew what it was called Sony could have developed this into a Deezer or Spotify type app opportunity missed in my opinion

  • Armands Padrevics

I am really Sad about this. It was the only app that would work on Phones FM Radio.
