Xperia XA2 Dual has hybrid SIM tray; XA2 Ultra Dual has dedicated SD card slot

Sony Mobile’s upcoming Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra look like fantastic mid-range all-rounders. Sony has recently released the manuals for both devices, which confirms the status of the dual SIM versions of both devices. For those looking at the Xperia XA2 Dual, it will have a hybrid SIM tray which means you can only use either two Nano SIM cards, or one SIM card and the microSD memory card.

It’s a better story for the larger Xperia XA2 Ultra Dual, which includes a dedicated microSD memory card slot, as well as the use of two SIM cards. Incidentally, the same is the case for the entry level Xperia L2. You can find links for all user guides below.

    Good work Sony!

  • Mike

Hmmm wondering if I should wait for the XA2 or get an XZ1 compact instead as they’re pretty cheap online.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

As a Sony fan, I feel like they’re doing what Apple is doing: keeping the high end and nice features exclusive to the larger and more expensive model

  • Chitti- The Robot

Get an XZ1 C. You’ll have flagship experience.

  • Night Guy

Get xz1c then, all xa2 specs are boring, with xz1 compact u’ll get fast update and unique features.

  • Shaf Sadiyan

I got myself a XZ1 last week and I love it. What I’m actually surprised is that battery life. It easily gets past a day and a half at least before being plugged in. Something which I didn’t expect from a 2700 mah battery.

  • Khillo81

They’re really two different species of phones; XZ1 Compact is a high-end device while XA2 is not. Given the choice, I’ll always go for the XZ1 Compact as it is guaranteed to be better specced and get more updates (actually I do have the XZ1 Compact and it is a great phone). That is if you don’t mind the small screen.

  • shenoy

    I wish XZ1 had this….

  • Barricade

There’s a simple reason that the dedicated microSD card slot is only available in the XA2 Ultra. You said it yourself, the larger model, it all comes down to available space for the compononts to include this feature, space of which there is plenty in the Ultra.

  • Night Guy

Nice! Glad you happy with that :)

Imagine a triple hybrid SIM: one SIM and two SD cards or two SIM and one SD card.

Sony should make the baseline storage capacity 64Gb, 32Gb isn’t really a lot even for a midrange phone these days, considering that 10 to 12Gb is used up by Android and pre-installed apps.

The XA2 Ultra is a huge phone, it has almost the same dimensions as the C5 Ultra, but weighs almost 40g heavier!

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

Dedicated secondary SIM slot ain’t that large to be out of the internal, is it?

  • hansip

Yea but all the internal wiring isnt as small as you thought it would be.

  • hansip

Xz1 line is still 100 dollar more than any xA line so it’s not 1 to 1. But If you can stand 720 4.6 inch, xz1c is the best there is. I want bigger screen though, so if not xa2, i would go with xa1 plus. Xa1 plus is better in RAM spec, but the xa2 with slim bezels is tempting though.

  • It was changed. Checked sonymobile for user guide for XA2 and it clearly stated that it has nonHybrid DualSIM. Wish to know what happen? Human error I suppose.

  • Any nonHybrid DualSIM is Your “Hybrid” Triple SIM (2xSIM+SD). And 2 cards wouldn’t be useful in phones. Tablets? Maybe. Gaming devices (Xperia Play 2, NVIDIA Shield)? Yes! But not in the phones.

As for the weight: C5 was made prom some kind of plastic, XA2 Ultra is made of some aluminium/metal alloy.

  • Beterry takes a lot of place. If You could compare board of 2011 Xperias and one of the newer (Z1+), You would see it’s a lot smaller than before – that’s the problem with it’s thickness.
That’s why there is no XZ1 Compact (or any other Compact) with DualSIM capability. Not sure why no Hybrid one.

  • Sony really optimized it’s software. That’s why their devices last longer than others.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

Then perhaps they could make the phone even thicker for that. Sorry I just wouldn’t accept any simple feature that can be had at any size.

I have an Alcatel Pop C7 in 2014 and it has both Dual SIM Slots and Dedicated microSD Card slot AT THE SAME TIME.
It has smaller battery sure, but the thickness of the XA2 series should give no excuse to them not to include it.

  • Barricade

It is if you want to have a dual SIM tray as well. A micro SD measures 15 by 11 MM, that’s quite big for extra space in a device that measures 70 x 142mm.

  • Mike

The only thing that puts me off from the XZ1 Compact is that there is no fingerprint sensor for those in the US.

  • usersparadise

Wondering why there are still no reviews about XA2 ;-(

Geeze Sony! Why such long names? It’s like you’re just adding random words to the end of existing models.

  • Justin

If you can’t use your dual sims and your SD card at the same time then it can’t be considered to be a dual sim phone, and shouldn’t be advertised as such.

  • Ananth Rajpurohith

Little confused if to buy for xperia xa2 ultra or l2 while from long time i waited for xa2 but announcet of xa2 ultra shifted my Focus. I compatred these devices xa2 ultra and l2 at Bestpriceon

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

All units have the fingerprint sensor, they’re just disabled through software if you buy in the US. You can easily flash the firmware of a different region, without unlocking the bootloader nor voiding warranty to enable the fingerprint sensor if you want…

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

I agree, but sadly all OEMs do this hybrid bullshit nowadays…

  • Mike

Not sure how that would effect WiFi calling or updates as it thinks I live in a different region.
