Sony’s EC270 cable allows Xperia XZ2 users to listen and charge simultaneously

by XB on 9th March 2018

in Accessories, Xperia XZ series

For those looking to pick up either the Sony Xperia XZ2 or XZ2 Compact, you’ll be well aware that neither handset has a 3.5mm headphone jack. For those that don’t want to get rid of their current wired setup, then Sony is including a USB Type-C to 3.5mm Audio Jack Adapter in the box.

Of course, we all know that a big limitation of this is that you cannot charge your device whilst also listening to music at the same time. This is likely to be a limitation for all mobiles that leave out the jack, unless you go wireless, or who knows, we might see phones with dual USB Type-C ports at some point.

Anyway, Sony is trying to do its bit to help to ease the pain by launching a USB Type-C 2-in-1 Cable EC270, that will allow users to both listen to their wired headphones, and charge their device via USB Type-C at the same time. The cable will also work with a headsets in-line mic and remote control.

There are some restrictions though, quick charging is not supported. Also, if you happen to own some of the older noise-cancelling headsets such as the MDR-NC31EM and MDR-NC750, then you’re out of luck as they’re not supported. If you have a non-Xperia mobile, then we understand this cable will not work with your phone due to the specific pin configuration that is compatible with the Xperia models only.

An easier solution to all of this, would have been if Sony kept the 3.5mm jack. That would have been the consumer friendly option, rather than dealing with dongles. We’re not sure why Sony put us in this mess, but this is the future (we guess).

  • This is a stupid and ugly contraption designed to solve a problem that did not exist before.

  • Bulitz

Just put the jack back. Samsung did.

  • Zayed Kotayba

Ok everybody will hate my comment but I’ll say it anyway (I don’t care lol).
Currently when I use my Z5P while laying on bed I usually have the micro usb port on the bottom connected to charger and the top part of the phone which have the 3.5mm jack to the headset and it’s annoying to deal with the two cables and they get tangled all the time which is annoying so what I want to say is if they supply this cable with the phone out of the box or even better if they supply us with this cable plus a cable with only 3.5mm at the end that would be perfect and I’ll be happy for the removal of the 3.5mm jack.

  • Rammstone

they should have included this one in the box. its probably going to be $30 extra

  • RockStar2005

Yeah that would’ve made more sense. lol

  • theskig

Yeah this is the future! Ugly adapters and less functions! (btw I currently use a NC headset MDR-NC31EM…)

  • phil g

I’m so disappointed in Sony. I will always be a fan of Sony Mobile but this and they’re somewhat foggy update policy is making me consider other brands for my next device.

  • The smoke

Why try fix what wasn’t broken to begin with! Quite happy with my xz1 for now..

  • TracerBullitt

This is bad and they should feel bad..

  • Moisés

I think in the box they should send an usb C earphones, then sell the adapter.

  • 3_nity

    WTF option!

  • Moisés
  • rakuen

So, whats the point of usb c earphone if it doesnot support noise cancelling??

Where will we trash out our hoise cancelling earphone we bought before??

    Stupid ideas

  • Moisés

If you want a new device, yes….

That is why I’ll wait next Premium. If it does not have jack, I have to buy a flagship from 2017

  • Nuno

Really surprised with the XZ2, a lot of new features that i know soon others will copy, just like i saw Samsung brag about new features on the S9 that my Xperia XZ Premium has since last year (slow motion recording, embedded ram on the camera sensor, etc). I can definitely see Sony improving and innovating, but strongly disagree with the lack of the 3.5mm jack, they were well known for the noise cancelling technology, and high resolution audio which another manufacturer LG showed off on the latest V30, and now they just gave up on it. Lets hope they reconsider and put it back on the Premium or Pro soon to be announced.

  • Khairul Shafiq

    stupid sony

  • Aiden M.

Like pretty much everyone else, I’m thoroughly disappointed in this. Although, I guess I can’t really complain TOO much, since I use an amp with my really big headphones. This meaning that even with my XZP, I have to use the USB-C port for audio. But understandably, I would much rather have the jack for my car or regular headphones etc. Waiting for the next Premium or Pro, or whatever it’s called. Don’t disappoint us Sony!

  • Rene Pedroso

Sony is well known for ditching/abandoning/supporting their technology rather quickly.

  • Rene Pedroso

Sony is really moving forward with their wireless tech, I guess they are hoping to recover sales loses in their mobile by having those who do purchase their phones with no 3.5mm jack to eventually purchase the line of wireless Xperia Ear for $300USD

  • Aiden Pearce

Android police article says, quick charge is not possible with this extendable bat ears.
So it might be completely useless while actively using it.

  • Iki

With this, you will still need two cables. And they are closer together, making it easier to tangle.
And with an 3.5mm only cable, you won’t be able to charge the phone.

    Your comment doesn’t make sense…

  • skrug

  • Sridu

Thumbs Down. Poor decision. I’m getting a thought if Sony is taking decisions Purely from one market perspective.

  • skrug
  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

    Just use wireless charging.

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

So nobody is going to comment that it only supports 5V /0.5A? With this current can the phone even charge if you use it?

  • Zayed Kotayba

At least both of them will be at the bottom so it will be less annoying.
I know everyone is hating their decision to remove the jack which I was in the beginning but the future is wireless and even if some says that Samsung still keeping the 3.5mm jack I would reply to that, yes but do you think S10 will have it (No, I don’t think so).

  • Daemon

    Couldn’t say it better.

  • Tomislav Matić

Who need this on XZ2 when it has wireless charging.

  • Iki

And why would it be less anoying having them closer? This will make them tangle more.

The future is 4,4 mm, not wireless. Unless they can make headphones with swapable DAC, amp modules. And make bluetooth lossless.

  • Talos the Robot

The Bureaucracies tend to create a problem and then trying to solve it with another bigger problem. Sony mobile and Apple in general are the best examples of Bureaucratic Organizations.

  • stpr

    Good luck with that LOL

  • Great Dude

The camera of XZ2 looks much better than I was expecting,
I am glad Sony did this amazing job.

  • Great Dude

I had to say that Sony is the only company who removed the headphone jack and give a Y shape dongle for music and charging, so not bad as HTC or Apple.
Although, I prefer and think that Sony should never had removed the headphone jack, but should bring back the FM radio.

  • hardik jadeja

Only one question though, how did you manage to get this?

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I would say “Thank you” to SONY and Qualcomm for camera improvement this time. But in the same time I would say “Curse you” for this stupid audio adapter.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    Curse you SONY… Curse you.

  • dragonsneeze

Go to gsmarena’s compare tool and select xz2

  • SheilaScotto

I see this is a stupid thing, cause trouble.

  • dragonsneeze

1/8s in auto is pretty courageous I’d say. (without ois ) Would be nice to see xz1’s output with the same settings.

  • dragonsneeze

Gsmarena said they will include this everywhere but idk for sure.

  • I think its okay cause I dont use it anyway, with SBH50, music always be my side.

  • iia3ezu

If you have a non-Xperia mobile, then we understand this cable will not work with your phone due to the specific pin configuration that is compatible with the Xperia models only.

Oh look, proprietary crap from Sony that does not work with other brands! Even for a 2-in-1 cable.

Good luck, Sony Mobile. You’ll need plenty of it.

  • Jerrysofresh

Yep XZP by example with the perfect combination of jack 3.5 mm and Bluetooth 5.0

  • a.mubher

“big limitation of this is that you cannot charge your device whilst also listening to musi.”

Is that really a “big” limitation? It is a limitation, but in my case I never did that anyways.

  • Moisés

Charger has a cooler inside to keep temperature low.
    Very interesting..

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

sony is like WB upon DCEU. try to appeal to mainstream and they still won’t beating the top winner

  • Moisés

Yes… I dont know how it was possible without tripod.
XZ1 shoots ISO 800 in same test.

  • H-R-K

Nice but still far behind than s9.

  • Insane014

    Beyond stupid

  • Khalid Abdi

True…. Though, I’m hoping Sony buys DC comics and their film rights.

  • Vuyo Ncube

XZ2 isn’t just matching the big players. It’s winning!

Sony’s teased dual cam module might be godlike!

  • SonyXZP_user

I was about to say that. I checked first if someone already posted it here. And I found your comment. Sigh… It should have been a fast charge cable, not this one.

  • dragonsneeze

I believe you and my own eyes. Good light wasn’t an issue imo, and I’ve said before that 1/8 for low light is managable handheld. And look how much it improved. It would be nice if they could share a 1/8s sample from XZ1 to compare and see if it’s the shutter speed or a new algorithm to thank.

  • P9

Did they use to remove it before?
Well maybe like waterproofing and sdcard slot of their flagship

Sony also did, Xperia X no waterproof that time (probably)

    Hoping for XZ2 Premium
Hopefully big battery, less bazel, dual camera, headphone jack..
    LOL keep dreaming xD

  • JC

They finally go the camera right! Still not buying that mess, though.

  • JC

    Spotted the Sony intern

  • pt020

Make 2 USB C or bring the headphones jack back.

  • The phone is a great one. However, I still think having the 3.5 without a adapter is the best option. I always went for Sony’s phone due to their sound and then this happens. I don’t see this as a new trend. An explanation would put us at ease. Anyways, this is no biggie. There are a lot of earphones/headphones that use USB ports nowadays. Still… great phone but this is a weird choice.

  • Roberval Silva

    too ugly !

  • TimmY

    Sony can fuck right off!

  • skrug

    I hope that’s a typo.

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

No it’s not (unless Sony made a typo cause I copied it from the spec list on the official site)

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

It should but that’s Sony for you

  • skrug

    I mean typo by Sony

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

I see, but it doesn’t seem to be the case, cause other sites reported it also and there was no response from Sony …

  • skrug

There was reports with the 6gb for XZ2 on the us/can/UK website and it took them a few days to fix it.

  • SergioPerigoso

since when does a cable limit the energy? that is the standard for usb ports and that is why they use that…

  • Bulitz

Clear and sharp images from XZ2. Bravo! But still not enough reason to get one. 16:9 is still a better option and of course the jack.

  • Bulitz

Most probably bcoz they belong to old school? Or is it just “a closed mind?”

  • This is called Innovation these kinda disgusting splitter isn’t. For new technology, avoiding old technology isn’t good idea. If you want avoid old technology new technology must be user-friendly / better than before.

  • anewprofile

    Such innovation.

  • 私たちの

and get electrocuted if something goes wrong.

  • 私たちの

So what happened to Samsung’s new camera tech that supposedly takes multiple photos to be joined together to create a sharper photo? Those photos clearly show that XZ2’s camera is superior and that it’s just a matter of adjusting the ISO.

Funny how Sony excels now when they don’t have new camera tech except for the 1080p super slomo.

  • washinma2424

    Agreed! Lol

  • Vuyo Ncube

Maybe Sony does what Samsung does but better because they’re more experienced in using on-sensor RAM to sharpen images.

AND Sony has already teased a new image signal processor while Samsung may struggle to innovate for the Note 9. XZ2 Premium could be the most interesting smartphone of 2018 if the battery’s big enough.

  • Dark Terror

the point of removing headphone jack is to force people move on to wireless tech. and i don’t mind ditching old tech/tangled wires!

  • Chitti- The Robot

Right on point. But I was amazed to see Sony doing Apple thing. It never did that before!

  • AllanKafka

Totally spot on. Moreover, the phone isn’t really thinner than before – just on the edge.

  • rakuen

This phone is useless while wirelessly charging, due to its FPS on back
    You cant unlock

    See who is stupid here

  • rakuen

    With its FPS on back?
    How do you unlock it??
    What about XZ2 compact?

  • Talos the Robot

Yes this but mostly because these type of manifacturers don’t want to offer choices to customers but rather force them to do what they purposely want in order to maximize their profits. This behaviur has already made

  • Robban2k

Honestly, I’ve been using wireless headphones for at least 5 years. I think there is no reason not to go wireless.
If you think wireless headphones are expensive then you can buy sony SBH50 to connect your headphones to.

  • Moisés
  • Moisés

Sony is selling more wireless stuff than ever.
    That is the reason.

  • Moisés

    I guess Moto Z 2016 has too.

  • Moisés

    Pixel 2 overlap 10 pics, S9 just 4..
Samsung tried same trick but is not on pair..

SD845 helps the processing.. Sony helped Qualcomm to develop. So Sony knows how to take all potential of it, more than other OEMs.

  • Great Dude

No it doesn’t have a Y dongle, the dongle of Moto Z can’t charge the phone while listening with a 3.5 mm headphone at the same time.

  • ZoubIWah

    fuck charging

  • hansip

at first i’m convinced that dongle way of life is minor adaptation to daily life.. but when i read that Noise Cancelling is dropped off for older NC headphones, i’m getting dissapointed again..

  • azzido

XZ2 to start “shitting” with ps4 slim for preorders…

Still not buying it as it is ugly as HELL, has weurd speaker holes, no jack, bad fps on the back, downgrade in front camera, F.2.0 back camera from 2011, no dual cameras, no OIS, no FM Radio, battery smaller than mid rangers, last year specs in terms of RAM and internal storage + ugliest belly design ever which looks like chinese toy and is overpriced (costs 50 euros more than XZ Premium…)

Where is XZ Premium 2 with Arc design or at least old omni balance design?
Better it comes with great and bright IPS display instead of faulty oled. We all know oled degrade in time as had overburning issues.

  • azzido

I will not be using crappy additional cables… since I still have device with mini jack and when I will be changing it there are still devices from other brands that offers it.

  • hansip

all i care from bluetooth headset is replaceable mini battery, or heck, let us install 2 AAA batteries.

  • 私たちの

I guess Sony had to tease that new sensor because Samsung is trying to develop their own and would want to break away from Sony’s sensors.

  • Warren Chang

get the MDR-NC750, it’s really good and better grade than MDR-NC31EM, overall it sounds much better

  • Iki

So, no sound, not possible to fit over your head, battery life of 1 second, crumbles If lifted. Can’t connect to your phone. But as long as you can change batteries it’s ok?

  • synz izynz

    yeah. stupid move from Sony.
They just need to reduce the bezel actually.
If they really need to enable fingerprint scanner in US market.
Just put somewhere else. Not with the power button.
Or only move the power button to the right. And just keep the original fingerprint position at right middle.

  • hansip

Didn’t understand what’s your problem of misunderstanding my statement..

  • monoke

So this is what headphone jack ditchers are claiming as a brave and moving the industry forward?.. Having a cumbersome dongle performing the same function phones from 5-10 years ago could always do out of the box? LOL. .. Why Sony?! Why?

  • Iki

You stated the ONLY important part was the abillity to change batteries.
So everything else could be horrible.

  • Ziggy

One of the very core reasons why Sony lost a sale. Not buying any of their phones until they sort out this horrible new design and return back to basics in autumn or latest next spring.

Headphone jack and power button fp sensor must return. I’ll even let them have the ugly curved glass back design if they return those two mentioned features.

  • Ziggy

Yes, like Betamax, Minidisc, PSP and PS Vita. Propably also many others.

  • Warren Chang

minidisc, i don’t think so, sony still was supporting minidisc until 2011, last model was MZ-RH1
PS vita, there is few sony games, but 2018 still (7 years of release) new games such catherine full body, 13th aegis, persona 5 dancing, yes, there are niche games, look at nintendo wii u (less than 4 years support 2012 -2016)
PSP was supported until 2012, released in 2004
Betamax (the profession version) Betacam was only discontinued a few years ago, yes, the consumer market was supported, but the professional market was supported for 25 years

  • Ziggy

Vita was only “alive” because of jrpg in Japanese market and some random indie ports in western market, but Sony officially cut it out from everything except PS+ many years ago already. Next year it will be laid to rest when Vita is removed from PS+. Sony stopped doing advertising regarding Vita years ago at the moment when they realized 3DS beat them completely.

Wii U actually got support until 2017, the best video game of last year came out on it in last March. That’s still not enough, less than five years of support was really bad.

In the general public’s eye Minidisc and Betamax were dead and buried a short while after those were released.

  • Ana Helušić

Lol Samsung never removed 3.5mm jack, only SD card and waterproof on S6/S6 Edge

  • hansip

Because i know any good bluetooth headset will cost money, so that should be taken care of easily. any of the top brand will do good on the audio so i don’t care too much; add some equalizer if needed. But the value of replacable battery is the deal breaker, the end all be all of my requirement.

  • AllanKafka

Yeah, and AFAIAC they will be selling fewer smartphones than ever until they come back to their senses.

  • mountain

Am I the only one here who doesn’t care? I have my headphones currently attached from a balanced to 3.5mm adapter 90% of the time, and all I have to do is just add one more 3.5mm to USB-C adapter.

  • Iki

None have good audio, nor replaceable batteries.

  • Tadija Djurovic

Xperia XZ2 4K HDR video example show true difference between video recorded with HDR and without HDR.

  • Yuki Fuyui

Looks like I will be skipping this gen, XZ1 looks like it will be with me for a couple of more years.
Removing the headphone jack is idiotic and counterproductive. Sony may not have the best DAC’s in their phones, far from actually but at least they have a headphone jack, the same cannot be said for 60% of the premium devices out there.

  • hansip

Nah, you’re just in state of denial.. Plenty of good Bluetooth headset like Sony wh1000x or bose. Sure overpriced, but there’s one. The only thing true is none have replacable battery.

  • Iki

Overpriced? They are cheap in the headphone world.
Sound wise they aren’t even close to equally priced non bluetooth headphones, like the sennheiser hd600.

  • hansip

Hah looks like I’m the fool here. But okay.. If you do want such high standard then it’s your call. For many non audiophile like me a 100 us$ is just too expensive though.. Heck even a 10 us$ is too much sometimes when the included earphones comes free.

  • washinma2424

^LOL I was wondering when somebody else was going to notice this. :)

  • theskig

Yes I know them but they were quite expensive at that time. And most of the time I listen to radio podcasts in mp3 so Hi-Fi quality is not my first need in the list.
Maybe with the next phone (after more than two years with my Z5P) I will also upgrade my headphones ;)

  • finnewar

i will only buy sony xperia xz1.
