Japanese mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, released a statement earlier today confirming that eighteen devices across its network will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting from July 2012. This includes two Xperia devices – the Xperia acro HD and the Xperia NX (Japanese equivalent of the Xperia S).

This could indicate that the timeline for the Xperia S ICS update will also be towards the end of Q2 2012 i.e. closer to June than April. However, no firm timeline has been given by Sony Mobile so we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it comes earlier.

The translation is a bit sketchy but other handsets including the Xperia PLAY, Xperia ray, Xperia acro and Xperia arc are currently being considered for an Android 4.0 update by NTT DoCoMo, although details on these handsets will be announced separately. In western markets, Sony Mobile previously confirmed that all 2011 Xperia handsets will be updated to ICS.
